Extractions: The stretch of coastline which lies between the two townships of Fortrose and Waikawa, on the south eastern coast, was used by the Maori for food gathering is evident by the number of artefacts later found in the area. At Fortrose the Ruapuke Maori knew the bar well and at Waikawa also, Maori was known to have frequented the harbour. A whaling station was later developed at each place during the 1830-40 period but was of short duration. The sea and coastline were very important to the early European settlers, who gradually developed small townships along the coast. Because the hinterland was heavily timbered, access was by sea and so coastal traders played an important part in the lives of these people. However, the coastline was not always kind, gales blew up from the south-west, the sea became wild and wicked and many mishaps occurred. The major shipwreck was the SS Tararua, which occurred in 1881 with the loss of 131 lives making it the worst sea disaster in New Zealand's history. The Tararua struck the reef at Waipapa Point and although a passenger did manage to swim ashore help was still a long way off, with a young workman from a nearby station having to ride to Wyndham, many miles away with the message, but it was already too late.

Extractions: For such a small island group, Tristan da Cunha has had a surprising number of shipwrecks: however, the amount of shipping rounding the Cape of Good Hope in the 19th Century meant that islands such as Inaccessible were often used as navigational aids, and were also used as a source of water and fresh meat. Islands such as Inaccessible are still poorly charted, and old sailing ships were often at the mercy of the elements. The Tristan da Cunha Group has claimed at least 22 ships, and in the past their wreckage was used to furnish islander's homes. The three confirmed wrecks on Inaccessible are as follows: Of these wrecks, by far the most dramatic was that of the Blenden Hall in 1821. The Blenden Hall The Blenden Hall was a ship of 450 tonnes, built in Southampton (UK) in 1811: she was owned by Captain Alexander Greig and was chartered to the East India Company. Though she sailed frequently between the UK and India, she was not a purpose-built Indiaman. As voyages in these times were often dangerous, she was armed and had a large far beyond that required to work the ship. Blenden Hall sailed from Gravesnd (Kent) on May 6 th , 1821, with a large number of passengers aboard. The ship made good progress through the Bay of Biscay, but was becalmed as they reached the Equator. After crossing the Equator, the ship was carried by currents towards South America: she had to set a South-Westerly course past

Extractions: Over the course of the last decade, research interest in the history of ships and the maritime shipping industry in Canada has increased dramatically. A major component of this renewed interest has been Canada's underwater heritage - the shipwreck. Discovery of the War of 1812 wrecks Hamilton and Scourge in Lake Ontario, and the widely publicized finding of the Titanic served to heighten general public awareness of underwater archaeology and history. Activities of groups such as Save Ontario Shipwrecks (SOS), especially with its emphasis on historical research using archival records, have also contributed to increased demands for information stored in various records repositories across the country. The following notes have been compiled to assist the researcher who wishes to consult federal government records for information relating to shipping losses in Canada. Before describing the major sources of documentation available on shipwrecks in the custody of the Government Archives Division (GAD) of the National Archives of Canada, a few preliminary observations are in order. First, the singlemost important thing to bear in mind is that an archives is not a library. For example, there exists no master list or index to all the records pertaining to shipping losses in Canadian waters at the National Archives. Our federal archival holdings, consisting of subject files and other unpublished documents, are principally arranged according to the name of the department of government that created and/or transferred the records to GAD. Thus, federal records relating to marine casualties are generally located in the documents of the Marine Branch (Record Group 42), Transport Canada (Record Group 12) and National Defence (Record Group 24).

NEW - NEW - NEW Loss of the schooner barney This was the first Preserve created in Michigan to help protect underwater resources. It extends due east from South Point and from Middle Island to the 150 foot contour, and follows that depth roughly north and south between the extension points. Only the Pewabic, Viator, Monrovia and Scott above are outside the Preserve boundaries. All ship traffic between the lower lakes and the lakes Michigan and Superior had to pass Thunder Bay. It was a very busy place, often fog bound and subject to large storms and unpredictable squalls. Upbound and downbound traffic are only separated by a few miles, and even that was impossible in the days of sail. The coast is very unforgiving with numerous shoals and islands of nearly solid rock. The overall result of over 150 years of shipping has left a vast collection of ships resting on the bottom, which today has become a mecca for divers, maritime historians and educators. Charter diving and air service is available in Alpena at the harbor. Many of the divable wrecks have mooring buoys attached.

Ships and crews over the years have found themselves to be casualties of hurricanes, coral reefs, shoals, and even pirates. Many entered Florida waters and have never been heard from again. Quite a number of Florida shipwrecks have been discovered however, and many of those are in waters shallow enough to be excavated.
