In fact the adjunct professor at the National University of Singapore sees the nation showing strong commitment to nurturing its next generation of entrepreneurs. The Entrepreneurship and Internationalisation Sub-Committee in Singapore, which is a public review body, recently proposed a broad range of measures to induce more citizens to become their own bosses. If approved, some of its proposals will be included in the main Economic Review Committee report in January 2003. For a start, International Enterprise Singapore plans to pump S$5 million into a programme to give as many as 150 local executives exposure to and experience in overseas markets over the next year. Extractions: A Journal of the Southeast Asian Studies Student Association Vol 2, No. 2 Fall 1998 Show Table of Contents David Kenley David Kenley is a Ph.D. candidate in the History Department at the Uhiversity of Hawaii at Manoa. He is currently engaged in dissertation researh on the New Culture Movement in Singapore. For Chinese intellectuals, the years immediately before and after 1919 represented an exciting period of change. The most influential individuals of this era called for a new literature, a new system of thought, and a new orientation toward modern life. Commonly known as the New Culture Movement, this intellectual momentum spilled beyond China into the overseas Chinese communities. The Chinese residents of Singapore, in particular, became increasingly caught up in intellectual currents coming from the mainland. China historians have provided many definitions of the New Culture Movement. Most scholars believe the movement is inextricably tied to the May Fourth Incident of 1919.[1] On that day approximately 5,000 students descended on Peking to demonstrate against the Versailles Peace Conference. The day's events included marching, the shouting of slogans, and eventually the ransacking and burning of the house of foreign minister Ts'ao Ju-lin. Demonstrators participated in similar protests throughout the nation, and the "May Fourth Incident" quickly assumed increased significance. Since these protests were prompted by many of the ideas that would later be manifest in the New Culture Movement, namely anti-imperialism, cultural rejuvenation, and independence, the May Fourth Incident and the New Culture Movement are difficult to separate.

Lesser known are the unique ethnic cultures that form the major ingredients of what the entire Singaporean experience is all about. The Malays, Chinese and Indians collectively make up the social and cultural pillars of Singapore. These are by no means cultures of anonymity and so much is already known that it does not warrant saying more. I intend to introduce to you the Peranakan culture, a truly unique and colorful culture that has never ceased to fascinate but is sadly fast losing foothold in the country to modernization and assimilation with other mainstream cultures. The Peranakan culture is essentially a cultural blend of mainly Chinese, Malay and some European descent, very often bearing the best of each. The Peranakan community evolved some two to three hundred years ago when Chinese traders established trade ties with the locals from the Malay Peninsula, including Singapore. Cross-cultural relationships and marriages were natural by-products when these traders married local Malay women. Peranakan, which means, "locally born" in the Malay language, was to be the name of subsequent generations of Chinese-Malays. To Westerners, they are commonly known as "Straits-born Chinese".
