Mosaics and drawings from Middle Eastern civilizations and Pompeii show man swimming in a dog stroke. Greeks held swimming in a high regard as well, so much so that men of the ancient times often considered others less worthy if they could not run or swim. A man was considered uneducated by Plato if he could not swim. But it was an 1844 race in London, England that displayed swimming close to what we know today. Thanks to England's Swimming Society, several American Indians were brought over for the race and dominated the competition using windmill strokes resembling today's freestyle. Despite the Indians' advanced style, the English still relied on the breaststroke - the stroke mainly used by Captain Matthew Webb when he became the first to swim across the English Channel in 1875.
Extractions: OLYMPIC HISTORY Softball had its Olympic debut in Atlanta, 1996, where, to the surprise of few, the US emerged winners. It is not for nothing that the type of softball played at the Olympics is known as fast-pitch softball. The fastest pitch thrown in Atlanta was clocked at 118kph, though most elite pitchers come in at a little over 100kph. Until 1995, the US had notched up a 109-game winning streak. Before the Games in Atlanta, the US was beaten by China, but Australia was the only team to beat the US during the Games. China then beat Australia for the silver behind the US. In Sydney, Tanya Harding leads a tough Australia squad that could challenge for the title with the US, Japan and China.

AP BLACKTOWN, Australia (AP) It's tough to improve on the 0.00 ERA that Lori Harrigan posted in the Atlanta Games, but she managed to do it in the Olympic softball opener in Sydney. Harrigan pitched the first solo no-hitter in Olympic softball history Sunday (Saturday night EDT) to begin the Americans' gold-medal defense with a 6-0 victory over Canada. "Once 'Vegas' threw that first pitch, it was showtime," said Dot Richardson, who homered along with Crystal Bustos and Jennifer Brundage. "Lori Harrigan did a great job in the first game of the Olympics. There was a lot of pressure on her because of that." Harrigan fumbled a grounder in the first inning, although the error was charged to first baseman Sheila Douty. She then retired 20 consecutive batters. Only four batters hit the ball out of the infield.

Extractions: Ananova: Olympic sport guide - Softball A guide to the Olympic sport of Softball. Technical details Softball is played on a diamond, with a grass surface. There is a pitching mound inside the diamond and four bases at each of the corners - home, first, second and third. There are nine players a side, taking it in turns to bat. Players use a wooden bat which is 86.36cm long and 5.7cm in diameter. The ball is heavier and larger than a baseball, but is hard, not soft (as its name would suggest). Unlike baseball, in softball the pitcher throws underarm and the match is played over seven innings rather than nine. Runs are scored by circuiting the bases. Players can be caught or tagged out. The innings are over when three batters are out. Olympic history A relatively new sport to the Games, softball became an Olympic sport for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. Softball is a women-only event. Story filed: 09:33 Wednesday 23rd August 2000 Check for more on:

It is thought that softball began as an indoor version of baseball in Chicago in the late 1800s. By 1933 the games rules had been standardised, and it spread internationally largely thanks to US servicemen who played it when they were stationed around the world during World War II. The sports history in Australia began in 1939 when it was promoted in schools and colleges in NSW. The first interstate championships was held in 1947 and the Australian Softball Federation was formed two years later. Australia joined the International Softball Federation in 1953 and was instrumental in establishing the first World Championship, held here in 1965 and won by the host country.
