With another breeding pair we're hoping there's more on the way. (Posted August 5, 2002) ith the possible exception of a few South American zoos, the Los Angeles Zoo is the only zoo in the world to exhibit uakari monkeys (pronounced wah-kah-ree ). The New World primates are distinguished by their bright red faces. Though the rest of their bodies are covered with medium-length dusty red hair, the skin of their bare red face becomes even redder when the animals are angry or excited. After a month-long introduction, Cheyenne, FloJo, new female Mama Kilya, and new male Inti are living together in their roundhouse exhibit located in the South American section of the Zoo. And Inti has been observed breeding Cheyenne, a pairing that Zoo staff are cautiously hopeful about. All four uakaris are of breeding age.

Our plants and animals that live in the wild are vital in many ways to man's existence - our food supplies, our health, and the quality of our lives. It is important to conserve habitats and entire ecosystems, as well as single species. Development that seems good for us is not always good for the millions of species of plants and animals that also inhabit the planet. As natural habitats around the world are destroyed, species become homeless and eventually disappear. It does not mean that we must stop logging, farming, or hunting, or using our natural resources. But, it does mean that we must do these things with careful planning. Accredited zoos and aquariums view education as a primary commitment to the future of wildlife conservation. Everyone must learn that each animal has its own spot in the complex web of ecology and that to remove or damage one portion of that web may weaken the entire structure. Each species is unique and by destroying even one plant or animal, many other species may be affected. Because of their commitment to captive propagation of endangered species, zoos and aquariums accredited by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association are the last refuge many animals have against extinction. Collectively, zoos and aquariums are the largest conservation education organization in the world, and professionals feel that preserving ecosystems should be a priority in wildlife conservation.

Extractions: The Giant Amazon River Turtle is one of the largest species of freshwater turtle in the world. Large females can reach over 3" across the shell and weigh over 100 pounds. In the 1600's, Amazon explorers reported nesting aggregations of hundreds of thousands of these turtles. Since then, relentless hunting for turtle meat and eggs have eliminated them from most areas of the river. There are six species of South American river turtles, all of which are still under extreme pressure from human exploitation and habitat destruction. Two species, including the Giant Amazon River turtle, are listed as endangered. Today, although officially protected throughout their range, they continue to be killed for food. The oldest living reptile at our Zoo is Onassis, a 120 pound female Amazon River turtle. She is at least 35 years old. The Zoo assists in the long term management of South American River turtles with the development and maintenance of a breeding registry (studbook) of all Amazon River turtles in North American zoos. At present many of our turtles, including Onassis, are on temporary loan to other zoos while our building is being renovated. When we reopen this spring, our turtles will have updated living spaces, including a new beach and nesting area to enhance breeding. Their exhibit will represent a portion of the Amazon River which floods annually into the surrounding forest.

Ocelot - Felis pardalis Misc.: This cat is probably the best known of the South American cats because of its pelt being the mainstay of the fur trade, and for the fact that it was frequently kept as a pet. Due the fact that Ocelots are high strung, unpredictable, comedic little cat, humans de-fanged, de-clawed, de-scented, and altered these cats in order to make them conform to the "pet" industry. Like all exotic cats, these creatures, male or female, altered or not, spray a foul smelling urine on everything they wish to mark as theirs including their keepers. In the 1980s, Ocelot fur coats sold for $40,000.00 and the live animal as a pet sold for $800.00. At one time, more than 200,000 ocelots per year were killed for their coats. Today, with laws prohibiting hunting for the fur trade, there are no Ocelot coats for sale, and the "pet" Ocelot is a thing of the past. At Easy Street, we have turned down offers of $15,000.00 for just one of ours! Size and Appearance: The Ocelot is much larger than its cousins the Margay and the Oncilla, although they bear a striking resemblance. The Ocelot weighs between 17-24 pounds, stands 16-20 inches tall, and reaches lengths of 48-64 inches. Its coat tends to be more blotched than spotted, and the chain-like blotches and spots are bordered with black, but have a lighter colored center. These markings run the entire length of the cat. The ground color varies from whitish or tawny yellow through reddish gray to gray. The underside is white, and the backs of the ears are black with a central yellow spot.

Extractions: The lowland, Brazilian, or South American tapir ( Tapirus terrestris ) is indigenous to most of the rainforested areas of South America. While there are more of this species left than of the Baird's, mountain and Malayan tapirs, the rainforests are suffering at the hands of humanity, and the tapirs are disappearing along with the rainforest. In addition, tapirs are often hunted, a pressure they cannot withstand for long. Tapirs figure in myths, legends, and religious beliefs of indigenous people. The Piaroas Indians of South America do not kill the tapir ( Tapirus terrestris ) because they believe tapirs to be "a sacred animal in which their ancestors are reincarnated."
