Extractions: Created in 1988 by the Golden Apple Foundation, the Golden Apple Scholars of Illinois program recruits and prepares talented high school graduates who represent a rich ethnic diversity for successful teaching careers in high-need schools throughout Illinois. Juniors at any Illinois high school are eligible for the program. To apply, students must first be nominated for the program by a teacher, counselor, principal, or other non-family adult. A limited number of supplemental positions in the program are also open to college sophomores in attendance at one of the 35 Illinois colleges and universities that are partners in the program. Latino and Language Minority Teacher Project The overriding goal of the University of Southern California Latino and Language Minority Teacher Project is to increase the number of Latinos(as) and language minorities in the teaching profession by creating a career track for practicing language minority para-educators. Participants in the program are employed bilingual para-educators who work daily in classrooms of eligible schools throughout the Los Angeles area while attending classes full time at participating universities. To maintain eligibility in the project and meet California certification requirements, participants must have a GPA that places them in the top half of their college cohort and make steady progress toward program completion.

Extractions: COE Home Professional Development Schools : Policies and Procedures: College of Education Message from the Dean. . . Since 1993, the USC PDS Network has worked with 11 schools that were committed to becoming fully functioning PDSs based on a set of principles and assumptions developed collaboratively by the partnership. These principles and assumptions reflect the Holmes Partnership guidelines as well as those of John Goodlad's National Network for Educational Renewal, and those of the National Education Association-Teacher Education Initiative. In 1997, six additional sites were added to the Network after a year of self-study and peer evaluation. The 17 PDSs that now form the USC PDS Network include two high schools, two middle schools, one child development center, one magnet school, and 11 PK-elementary schools in six school districts in the Greater Columbia area, including the Fort Jackson School District (Department of Defense). According to the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE), there are more than 300 PDSs nationwide, many of which are connected to institutions accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). NCATE subsequently developed standards for PDSs which the organization published in October 2001. Two schools in the USC PDS Network were involved in the development of these standards: Pontiac Elementary School was one of five sites selected to design the draft standards, and Rice Creek Elementary School was one of 20 sites selected nationally to actually pilot the draft standards over a three year period of time.
