My Life As A Dog - Vermont Sunday Mag. Photographer Geoff Hansen's work has been appearing in newspapers like the Boston Globe, New York Times and of Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota and south dakota, in the first lap of http://www.geoffhansen.com/vermont.htm
Extractions: Photographer Geoff Hansen's work has been appearing in newspapers like the Boston Globe, New York Times and Newsday for the last 10 years, but now the West Hartford resident has taken a giant step forward into the sometimes-awkward world of book publishing. About six years ago, Hansen acquired an auburn and white beagle puppy named Lucy. For fun, he took black and white shots of Lucy as she was growing up, made postcard-sized prints and sent them to friends. His friends loved them. "They said, 'It's on our fridge! You've got to do something with this!'" recalled Hansen, following a recent book signing at the Quechee Library. The book-signing scene at the library was an author's dream. The 50 copies of "My Life As a Dog: The Many Moods of Lucy, the Dog of a Thousand Faces," the book Hansen finally wrote, sold out within half an hour. Grownups and children who did not arrive early enough patiently lined up at the librarian's desk and placed orders for the book, even as more customers kept coming into the library. "Cool! The Beagle Has Landed!" crowed a small boy, reading aloud the red bumper sticker that comes with the book.

Coda September/October 1984 John R. Milton (south dakota Review) I read so many submissions that I haven enclosuressuch as reprints of feature stories from local newspapers or listings http://www.pw.org/mag/articles/a8409-2.htm
Extractions: by Gerald Haslam "Not the best writing, but certainly the most interesting writing I have received has been in cover letters," says John R. Milton, editor of South Dakota Review for twenty years, in a recent interview in Western American Literature (Volume XIX, #2). Little wonder, since trying to say just the right thing in those ostensibly simple notes can cause great anxiety for writers, especially novices. Uncertainty about what to say in cover letters can cause writers to be overly verbose, to indulge in self-advertising, to be altogether too brief, or to neglect to send a letter at all. K.R. Mullin, editor of Full Moon, thinks cover letters are nearly extinct: "I'd like to know why so many writers no longer use cover letters and whether I'm alone in mourning the loss of this endangered species?" Following is some advice from eleven editors of literary magazines on what to say in a cover letter.

Extractions: From California's Contra Costa Times to the Portland Oregonian , a handful of daily newspapers have launched book clubs within their pages over the past few years. Some have linked with other media to promote the ideathe Chronicle Book Club, organized by the San Francisco Chronicle and promoted by the company's cable television station, is one notable example. Minneapolis's daily, the Star Tribune , has advanced the trend even further by partnering with the Loft Literary Center and Minnesota Public Radio, as well as over one hundred bookstores across five Midwestern states, to form the book club Talking Volumes. Susie Eaton Hopper and John Habich, staff editors of the Star Tribune , first came up with the idea of launching a book club in 1998. That year the Tribune was bought by the McClatchy Company, a media conglomerate based in Sacramento, which also owned the Sacramento Bee , a daily that had started the Bee Book Club in 1997. When Hopper and Habich learned of their sister paper's new venture, they thought such a project would be perfect for their readership, given the Twin Cities' active arts community. Hopper and Habich approached Linda Myers, the executive director of The Loft, and Katherine Lanpher, a talk-show host at Minnesota Public Radio, both of whom were enthusiastic about the project, and the partnership was formed.

Extractions: by Sid F. Colmenero Instruction given to Captain Meriwether Lewis, by Thomas Jefferson on June 20, 1803. Quite an endeavor by any means for the two Captains and their crew of men. Our mission was to retrace the route of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, over land, in an effort to raise funds for the Off Road Riders Foundation Explorer II , westward, towards the sun. - Thomas Jefferson The site known as Camp Dubois at the mouth of the Wood River, hence the name Camp Wood, sits across from the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi rivers. It would be the official starting point for the expedition. While technically, the expedition started further east, Camp Dubois would be the beginning as Captain Clark began mapping the expedition from this point. From the start, Camp Dubois was sort of a training camp to see if the men the captains would eventually pick were hardy enough for the long voyage ahead. The eleven stone pillars at the site are for the states the expedition went through during their voyage. Walking around Camp Dubois and observing the flora and fauna you get an image what it must have been like for the members of the Lewis and Clark expedition. With a heavy forest outlay around the camp, some of it untouched since the time of Lewis and Clark, it must have felt like walking in a dark tunnel with hopes of seeing light at the end. It wasn't that long ago that Josh Heupel was like any other football-crazed kid, standing in his back yard, mud caked on his pants, team down by a touchdown, needing to march his unit around the bushes and past the flag pole to win the national championship. Josh Heupel led Oklahoma to an undefeated regular season and the Big 12 title. A few slants, an out, and a post pattern or two later, and little Heupel would be the hero, leaping across the burnt South Dakota grass, throwing his arms in the air and screaming in celebration. He was undefeated in those imaginary one-man contests.
