General William Henry Harrison Beadle was born in the rugged new west, in a forest region where great oaks, walnut and poplars grew, near the Wabash river, the route for nearly all the commerce of the early days; when the houses were mostly of logs and all the life around him was active and vigorous; drank from the cool, clear springs with a limestone element in them to develop bones and stature, and used to labor to the extent of his physical powers; and, observing the ambitious efforts of his enterprising father and mother, his life was shaped for execution and sucess. Such were the environments and stimulating conditions that life in boyhood and manhood gave to Dr. Wm. H. H. Beadle, and prepared him for his great service to the territory of Dakota and the state of South Dakota. The Beadles and Brights became near neighbors, and there General Beadle's parents were married, after the fathers had made two or three trips with flatboats, loaded with produce, to New Orleans. They moved to western Indiana, and the father who was a master hand with the broadaxe, built with his own hands a common but comfortable hewed log house near the northwest corner of Parke county, and in that William was born January 1, 1838, the fourth child and first son of the family. The woods were close about the home, and the deer, wild turkeys, squirrels and pheasants were abundant in them. The life was simple, the food plain but good, and the clothing was spun, woven and made by his mother.

The license will allow the state to use GIS software with every instructional computer in all of South Dakota's public and private K-12 schools. Extractions: General Information Museum Background Mission Statement: ACRE Museum Hours Museum Location - Map The Museum of Geology is a teaching and research facility with collections of more than 250,000 vertebrate fossils and 6,000 minerals. The collections emphasize the fossils and minerals of the Black Hills region. White River Badlands mammalian fossils, marine and non-marine Jurassic and Cretaceous reptiles and mammals, and Black Hills pegmatite minerals are among the important collections. Some of the more outstanding specimens displayed for the general public include a pregnant oreodont , a complete titanothere skeleton, mosasaur and plesiosaur skeletons, and a systematic collection of minerals from all over the world. The Museum of Geology had its start in the late 1800's with the donation of Mr. G. E. Bailey's mineral and fossil collection to the Dakota School of Mines (now called the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology). Over 5,000 specimens were accepted and formed the core of the school's collection for many years. The original collection was later enlarged due to the efforts of numerous people since this time. Many locally derived rocks from the pegmatite mines and fossils from the White River Badlands were collected and added to the collection. Spectacular dinosaurs and fierce-looking sea lizards ( mosasaurs and plesiosaurs ) recovered from terrestrial and marine Cretaceous rocks of South Dakota have also been added to the collection; some of which are currently displayed.While traditional exhibits and research collections continue to grow, the interpretative role of the Museum of Geology is expanding in a new museum for Rapid City called the Journey. Construction of the Journey began March 21, 1996, and opened May 18, 1997. The Journey celebrated its first year anniversary with the donation of a cast of a

He wanted to call the place Gunnville but father and the other Gunns refused their permission..The General swore and said: "We will call it Scotland, then!" and Scotland it was and Scotland it is. *excerpted from The Gunns of Kinlochlaggan: A Scottish Disapora by Kathy Gunn Sullivan. In the spring of 1870, General Charles T. Campbell established a stagecoach stop for the Firesteel Trail. This stop, which included his residence, an inn, a general store and a large horse barn became the original town of Scotland South Dakota. Campbell, along with about 100 families of Scottish and English ancestry, located this stop on a flat area beside Dawson Creek, about a half-mile southeast of the Chalk Rock Museum. In 1879, Campbell encouraged his friend Alexander Mitchell to build a railroad line through Scotland from Marion Junction which was northeast of Scotland. When the railroad arrived in 1880, the town moved "upland" to meet it onto land owned by John Stafford who deeded the land to the railroad and platted 80 acres for the new town. With the railroad spurring new growth, other additions were platted by Phillip Becker, Johanna, Bertha, and Sara Korb, John Lawler and Abel Stafford. By 1884, Scotland's population was up to 1200 with railroad service connecting it to the east and south. By 1891 the population had risen to 1500 but was beginning to feel the effects of new homesteading in Charles Mix County and points west.

Through the years there have been many changes in technology and in teaching approaches, but the basic philosophy has remained essentially unchanged: provide students with an education and the skills to live independently and they will be contributing members of their families, community, and state. Our faculty and staff have years of training and experience in the education of children with vision loss. We use a team approach to providing education that fits the needs of the individual child. A corps spokesman says the plan calls for low flows in the spring that will be gradually increased over the summer. He says that schedule will help conserve water in the big reservoirs. He says the agency hasn't honored a 1991 agreement that said needs of both upstream and downstream states must be considered. (Washington-AP) For the first time in nine years, the Missouri River was absent from a widely publicized list of the nation's most endangered rivers. The conservation group American Rivers which issued the list yesterday is suing the federal government to return the Missouri to a seasonal ebb and flow to improve habitat for birds and fish. American Rivers president Rebecca Wodder says the river dropped off the list not because conditions are better, but because the group expects to win the lawsuit.

Only thirty-five projects were funded in the Pulling Together Initiative nationwide. Furthermore, South Dakota was second only to California for the amount of dollars awarded in grant money this year. Commissioner Curt Johnson said, "Controlling noxious weeds is not an easy task for any one entity to undertake. The projects that have been funded take a common sense approach by including many partners and a teamwork-oriented frame of mind.
