Officials shifted private trust fund money to pay 28 Smithsonian Institution workers. "We are doing this on a minimal basis with just the minimum amount of staff we need," said Smithsonian spokesman David Umansky. The National Air and Space Museum, which generates revenue through its IMAX Theater and the Einstein Planetarium, also will be open through Dec. 31. None of the Smithsonian museums charges admission. The Air and Space Museum charges for its theater and planetarium. That ability to generate income has allowed it to stay open during the shutdown. "Because of the last shutdown and reductions in federal appropriations, we need to generate as much revenue from sources as possible," Umansky said. Other Smithsonian museums will remain closed. About two-thirds of the Smithsonian's 6,600 workers are considered federal workers. Most were sent home last Monday when the Interior Department lost authority to spend money. Meanwhile, cyberspace has come to the rescue of tourists looking for alternatives to closed national monuments and museums.
