Extractions: The Canyon Space Team has defined its goal as developing a team with the right skills, financing, and organization to pursue low cost, private, human access to space (sub-orbital, semi-ballistic flight). We have decided upon a ladder like path to achieving this goal. This ladder consists of advancing our level of technology, and understanding and experience with that level of technology, in small increments. An easy way to accomplish this is by setting up projects within the team that have fairly narrow and specific goals. We have set up different teams that are given charge over various projects, with each team having a team lead that mainly serves as a point of contact for that team. Each of the teams is generally referred to by an acronym, the purpose of this is to make differentiating between team somewhat easier. Here is a list, with links to the brief explanation of that team, for the uninitiated of the acronyms and what the actual program name is:.

Extractions: The Virtual Space project has studied new methods of computer control. The aim has been to create intuitive user interfaces that blend in with the surroundings of the user. The starting point of the project to research and develop bodily and spatial user interfaces has been the natural way in which people move and act. Applications include new kinds of computer games. Nautilus The project has produced a prototype of a game called Nautilus based on interaction between 3 to 6 players. Nautilus is an underwater adventure where players collect points, cope with dangerous situations and finally save a dolphin trapped in a wrecked ship by steering a diving bell. The diving bell is steered by the movements and positions of the group of players on the floor area. Results from the planning stages have been assessed together with users, which has provided new information on bodily and spatial user interfaces and their usability. Nautilus is a unique game that allows the playing team to experience both adventure and a winning feeling. Unlike other games, Nautilus is controlled by movement rather than by traditional controls. Results of the interdisciplinary research and development project can be applied to designing new attractions for amusement and science parks and other similar environments and they can also be used to develop new ways to control electronic devices at home, for example.

Micromachined 2D Nozzle Micro propulsion is a true key element for high performance micro- and nano satellites. The complete system will be accommodated on small circular silicon wafers inside a pressure-tight housing in the shape of a 42-mm sphere. Each sphere contains four individual thrusters that is located in one plane, 90 degrees radially apart. The proportional thrusters can have a maximum thrust between 0.1 mN and 10 mN depending on the nozzle dimensions.

Nevertheless, a number of countries still lack the human, technical and financial resources required to conduct even the most basic space-related activities, such as meteorology, communications and natural-resource management. The need to make the benefits of space technology available to all countries has thus grown more urgent with each passing year. The Programme on Space Applications (PSA) , since its creation in 1971, has made substantial progress in furthering knowledge and experience of space applications around the world. Provision of country capacity-building, education, research and development support and technical advisory services by the Programme have all helped to reduce the gap between the industrialized and developing countries. Much more, however, remains to be accomplished. The support of Member States and their participation in the Programme on Space Applications are vital. It is only through the commitment of all nations that the Programme can achieve its primary objective of putting space technology to work for sustainable economic and social development, not just in individual countries but on a global basis.

John Steinbruner (University of Maryland) and Carl Kaysen (MIT) serve as CISS cochairs. Profound social, economic, environmental, and technological transformations now underway will affect the prospects for peace and human well-being in the coming decades. Accommodating these changes will be the primary challenge of states, nongovernmental organizations, corporations, and multilateral institutions. A concern for this process of transformation and international accommodation is at the core of CISS-sponsored research. CISS has sustained an innovative program of public policy studies for nearly 20 years. In the 1980s, CISS sponsored path-breaking analyses of the implications of the Strategic Defense Initiative and the militarization of space. In the 1990s, CISS projects helped to redefine the field of international security studies by focusing on such issues as the relationship between environmental scarcity and violent conflict, the proliferation of small arms and light weapons, the problem of humanitarian intervention, and the challenge of strengthening institutions of international justice. Current CISS projects focus on the importance of military-to-military information exchanges as a means of reassurance, the international stakes of regional conflicts, and the rules governing the use of outer space.
