    Extractions: Victory in the Spanish American War made the U.S. a nation with global interests. In one brief clash of arms the U.S. acquired Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippine Islands from Spain. In addition, Cuba was granted independence, with Spain assuming its national debt. Many Americans were appalled by the new U.S. foreign policy, which they equated with imperialism. Andrew Carnegie, the steel magnate and philanthropist, offered to buy the Philippines for $20,000,000 and give the country its freedom. Many other Americans, however, talked of manifest destiny and the duty of the U.S. to spread its form of civilization far and wide. April 24 - The Spanish American War officially began when Spain declared war on the U.S. The following day Congress passed a declaration of war, effective April 21. Battle of Manila Bay At the Battle of Manila Bay, the six-ship Asiatic squadron of Commodore George Dewey decisively defeated a larger but outgunned and underprepared Spanish fleet. The U.S. flotilla emerged virtually unscathed, with only eight wounded. The Spanish fleet was destroyed, with heavy casualties. The action cleared the way for U.S. occupation of Manila in August.

    Extractions: At the end of the nineteeth century, some Americans sensed a restlessness in the air. The western frontier was rapidly becoming settled. Many people agreed with historian Frederick Jackson Turner when he predicted that "American energy will continually demand a wider field for its exercise." Turner believed that for the American spirit to thrive, it needed a frontier. Influential leaders like Senator Henry Cabot Lodge from Massachusetts, Assistant Secretary of the Navy Theodore Roosevelt, and newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst took Turner's ideas one step further. They believed that America was in fact destined to expand beyond its borders. Expansion, as Roosevelt later explained, meant "not only the extension of liberty and order, and the bringing nearer by gigantic strides of the day when peace shall come to the whole earth." An Opportunity for Expansion Cuba, only ninety miles off the coast of the United States, presented American espansionists with an opportune chance to end their country's isolation and assert its power in world affairs. Spanish control over the island had weakened considerably since the late 1860s, when Cuban rebels first began to agitate for their independence. In the 1870s a prolonged uprising took place against the Spanish; and in 1895, a revolution began.

World War II Recent History Stewart Woman's Army Corps 1980's Today ... 1-1 IN Home Page The outbreak of the war with Spain in April 1898 found the Regular Army concentrating in Southern ports, with the First Infantry ordered to New Orleans. Companies E and G made an amphibious landing under fire at Point Arbolitas, Cuba to deliver supplies to Cuban insurgents and to go down in history as having conducted the first engagement of the war. The Regiment as a whole served in the campaign that ended in the surrender of Santiago. Following the war the First Infantry Regiment was stationed in Puerto Rico, with the exception of the First Battalion, which was on duty at Fort Leavenworth as a Depot Battalion. In 1900 the entire Regiment was alerted for services in China This assignment did not materialize, however, and the Regiment was instead sent to the Philippines. Here the Regiment fought the Philippine Insurrection, which lead to the pacification of Marinduque Island. The Regiment then deployed to Samar Island and experienced a difficult two-year struggle in pacifying that island. In 1902 the Regiment returned to the United States.

    Extractions: Back to KSGenWeb Main Page These rosters were taken with permission from the book "Fighting Twentieth: An Account of the Kansas Volunteers in the Spanish American War. 1898-1899" by John A. Ostertag. He in turn took much of his information from a small booklet printed in the Fall of 1899 upon the return of the men who were called the Fighting Twentieth of Kansas. It is a documentation of Kansas youth who answered President McKinley's call for 120,000 volunteers to wage war against Spain. John's book also contains additional historical accounts, photographs and other information not included in this web page. The book is still in print and may be ordered from John by writing to him at 3005 Charles, St. Joseph, MO 64501-3342. Cost is $15. The men arrived at Camp Leedy in Topeka, Kansas and after six rain sodden weeks, were entrained to San Francisco - only to cool their heels for much longer than any of them expected or desired. They were placed in undesirable quarters and no uniforms were issued for several weeks due to snarled red tape in the War Department. They were the first to arrive at San Francisco and about the last to leave for Manila instead of Cuba, as first believed.

There appears to have been an impelling something quite akin to elective force and the laws which govern everything in nature. For thousands of years the light of progress and civilization has been traveling westward, growing brighter and brighter at every step of its steady and measured advance. Persia, Egypt, Greece and Rome successively felt the light and blessing of civilization, perhaps not precisely, but nearly so in their order of western longitude, and finally the Mediterranean became the field of the world's commerce, and the countries washed by its waters became the seat of progress, arts and civilization, England, then barbaric, soon felt the dawn of a new life, and the Atlantic, up to that time unexplored, except near European shores, was crossed and the American continent made known to the world. Settlements upon the Atlantic coast of this new country, and the gradual but steady expansion westward did not result from a matured plan, emanating from a human mind, but it was rather the logical course of events, impelled forward by an unseen hand.

    Extractions: Roadside Georgia Established in 1853. Named after Catoosa, American Indian Chief, the area was created from portions of Whitfield and Walker Counties and was originally part of Cherokee County. Early Native Americans of the Woodlands period, predating the Moundbuilders built a stone wall on Sand Mountain in Catoosa County similar in many aspects to the one constructed at Fort Mountain Around 1000 A.D. a Moundbuilder culture known as the Mississippeans lived in the area. The Creek then controlled this area until the westward advance of the Cherokee forced them furthur west and south. One of the earliest encroached areas of the North Georgia Mountains, the city of Dogwood or Dogwood Campground, (Catoosa's future county seat, Ringgold) lay at the intersection of 3 major trading routes in the territory. The old Federal Highway from Savannah met the roads to Knoxville and Nashville here. The land in the area around Ringgold was highly prized in the 1832 Georgia Land Lottery, in part because of the proximity to the Federal Highway. By the time the Cherokee lost control of the land in 1835 the city of Dogwood was the largest town from Knoxville to Savannah. It would hold this title until bypassed in the 1840's by Cassville, a town in Bartow County and Chattanooga . About the time that Ringgold was losing that title the Western and Atlantic Railroad built a depot to serve the large number of warehouses that had developed. The town expanded during this time to handle the increased number of workers in the area to build the tunnel at

She was coaling at Guantanamo Bay and missed the Battle of Santiago on July 3. The USS MASSACHUSETTS was one of the new fleet of battleships promoted a special board created in 1890 to recommend the manner in which to update the U.S. Navy so that it could defend adequately against the imperial world powers, as well as by the nations of South America (several of which had larger vessels than any in the U.S. Navy). The board realized the need for battleships with a long-range cruising capability. However, many members of the United States Congress were in favor of Isolationism, and opposed long-range battleships as they were obviously not intended strictly for coastal defense. To assuage fears of the Isolationists, the new class of vessels were called "Sea-going coast-line Battleships". The name, an all- covering oxymoron, was thought to be particularly brilliant and useful by Theodore Roosevelt after he became Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Navy.
