Extractions: May 11, 2000 The little word, "would," can be used in a number of interesting ways. Most of us know that it can be used in a polite request: " Would you please close the door?" Its other uses are also interesting. Are you willing: " Would you help me with my homework?" "Yes, I would be happy to help." A past habit: "When I was a boy, I would climb every tree in the neighbourhood." Past of will (indirect speech): "I'll see you tomorrow." "He said he would see us tomorrow." A past preference: "I would rather have gone to the movies." (But, actually, I went to the band concert) Assignment: When we were young, we all had preferred activities. Write, using would at least three times, about something you preferred to do as a young person. Use at least one "would rather + past participle." If you like, write some dialogue, so you can include indirect speech as well. View Teacher Writing Sample When I was a boy, I

Extractions: Course Description: Writing can be difficult and sometimes intimidating, but it is also something that you already do. This course focuses heavily on writing as a process, rather than as a final product. As writers write, they need a set of strategies to help them move from thinking about a paper to polishing a final draftstrategies that can only be learned by writing consistently and often. The primary goal of this course is to create a community of writers who will help each other to define individual voice, while working together to draft, revise, and edit each others literary work.

Chinese Story to indicate the case that a person can make his speech or composition smartly lively http://chineseculture.about.com/library/extra/story/blyrh11121999.htm
Extractions: During the Northern and Southern Dynasties (420-589 AC), once lived a famous painter named Zhang Seng-Zuong. He was highly praised for his fine art by Emperor Liang Wu. One year, Zhang Seng-Zuong was asked to paint on the wall of the temple of Andong. He almost finished the painting of four dragons, in which they were breaking into a gallop in clouds. Everybody appreciated the vivid dragons on the wall. "But," asked one man," why didn't you put in the pupils of their eyes?" "Well, they will fly away if the pupils are put in." answered Zhang Seng-Zuong. But nobody believed him. They took what he said for jokes, so they still appealed to him to paint the pupils in the eyes. At their request, Zhang Seng-Zuong had to take up his paintbrush to begin his troublesome work. After a moment of hesitation, Zhang dotted the key part of the dragons resolutely. Two of the dragons suddenly precipitated into a cloud of rolls of thunder and lightning before he could drop the paintbrush. The crowd was disordered into a mess; some lay themselves on the stomach, and some hid themselves behind pillars. A loud crash was heard and the wall toppled into pieces in the middle. The dragons writhed for a while and flew away high in the sky. Fortunately the two without pupils still remained there on the wall peacefully.
