Nevertheless, competition climbing only started in the 1960s with speed events in the former USSR, continuing in the 1980s with difficulty events in other parts of Europe, and in 1989 with the first ever climbing world cup. Today, climbing competitions include three different disciplines: Bouldering - where athletes conquer the greatest number of obstacles without rope, Difficulty - athletes aim to climb highest on the wall, and finally Speed - the fastest climbers are the winners. 52 countries organize regular climbing competitions on climbing walls specially erected in large arenas with thousands of spectators. The young sport has not only added to the popularity of climbing walls everywhere, it has greatly improved rock climbing standards, too.

The SEA Games originated from the SEAP (South East Asian Peninsular) Games which were held first in Thailand in 1959. When the first SEAP Games was held in Bangkok in 1959, only six countries participated, namely Laos, Malaysia, Burma (Myanmar), Singapore, Vietnam and Thailand. Luang Sukhumnaipradit, the then Vice President of the Thai Olympic Committee, had been trying to begin a SEAP Games since 1957. He believed that a regional sports event, similar to the Asian Games or the Olympic Games, will help promote cooperation, understanding and relations among countries in the region. His efforts were rewarded after two years. The name SEAP Games was used up to 1975. Thailand had by then been the host country three times. Later on Indonesia, the Philippines and Brunei joined the Games which was then renamed SEA Games at its 9th meet in Malaysia in 1977. The name has since been officially adopted and the Games has become the most important sports event of the region. Memberships of SEA Games has now increased to ten with Cambodia being the last member. To download a .pdf copy of the SEA Games Squash Championship Regulations (in zip format)

Extractions: Grapevine's favourite Manchester memories Commonwealth Quotes - the things they said ... Manchester, renowned for its rain, basked in a glorious heatwave on the opening weekend of the Games. Grapevine went walkabout around the Sportcity venue between Saturday's afternoon and evening squash sessions and was amazed to see queues 50-deep at the Mad Ferret bar as perspiring spectators waited patiently to quench their thirst. Organisers had gone to great lengths to play down Manchester's typical Northern flat-cap image. So it came as something of a surprise when the Grapevine checked into the Games media HQ at the G-Mex Centre and opened his goodie bag. Inside the laptop carrier was half a tree's worth of official documents, a pocket calculator, an official Games pencil, and ... an official Manchester 2002 flat cap. Mind you, it came in very handy when the weather changed and the rain started bucketing down on the Tuesday. Later on, when the medal ceremonies began, all the flag carriers were decked out in snazzy light green waistcoats ... and flat caps. It was a beautiful piece of reverse psychology, proving that Mancunians were happy to have a little laugh at their own expense, but it undid months of briefing and spin by the city's PR chiefs who were trying their hardest to conjure up an alternative image of the region's identity.
