The starting point is a village study by Rana P B Singh from Banaras Hindu University in 1977. These villages used to be typical agricultural villages but have now become suburbs in terms of economic activities. Extractions: The central hill country rises a little south of the centre of the island and is surrounded by a coastal plain. The flat north central and northern plain extends from the hill country all the way to the northern tip of the island; this region is much drier than the rest of the island. The best beaches are on the southwest, south and east coasts. The highest point in the island is in the spectacularly beautiful hill country region, named Piduratalagala it rises (2524m) above sea level and tops Nuwara Eliya. Adams Peak, at 2224m, is far better known and much more spectacular. The Mahaweli Ganga, Sri Lankas longest river has its source close to Adams Peak and runs into the sea at Trincomalee. In the northwest of the country Mannar Island, joined to the mainland by a bridge, is almost connected to Rameswaram in southern India by the long chain of sandbanks and islets called Adams Bridge. Sri Lanka is a typically tropical country in the sense that there are distinct dry and wet seasons, but the picture is somewhat complicated by the fact that it is subject to two monsoons. From May to August the southwest monsoon brings rain to the southern and western coastal regions and the central hill country.

Extractions: Peter Smithson started his career at Liverpool as an undergraduate, then a postgraduate. His first lecturing post was at Birkbeck College, University of London. In 1973 he was appointed as a lecturer in Geography at Sheffield. He has also spent three months at the University of Natal in Durban lecturing on climatology in the Geography Department there. Precipitation climatology (applications in UK, Sri Lanka and Brazil), cave climatology, climate change especially in semi-arid environments. Current research continues the theme of precipitation investigations in different parts of the world with the present emphasis being on tropical environments. Peter Smithson is working on trends within Sri Lankan rainfall in particular differentiating between the patterns in the different rainfall regimes of Sri Lanka. Secondly he is also working with researchers in Brazil on rainfall patterns in Sao Paulo state and particularly their relationship with ENSO controls from the south-east Pacific. The other main theme involves climate change in the Middle East prior to instrumental records working with Huddersfield University.

Extractions: Sri Lanka - The Pearl of the Indian Ocean Overview Sri Lanka, the Pearl of the Indian Ocean was known as Ceylon before it became a republic. This tropical island, described by many to be shaped in the form of a teardrop, is located at the southern most tip of India and measures 432 km in length along the north-south axis and 224 km in width at its widest point. The total land area of the country is 66,000 km Presently, Sri Lanka is home to approximately 20 million people, and over 74% of the population is of Sinhalese descent. Of the minority, about 18% are Sri Lankan and Indian Tamils , and the remaining 8% constitute the Burghers who are of European descent, the Moores who arrived from Malaysia and India, and the Veddas who are the forest people of Sri Lanka. Initially, when this island nation was first discovered, close to 99% of the island was covered with forests. Over time however, natural forest cover has dwindled rapidly from an estimated 84% in 1881 to 46.5% in 1956 and to 24% in 1992. Today, a total area of approximately 800,000 ha of land has been set aside and recognized as national parks, sanctuaries, reserves or protected areas. In 1995, the total forest cover in Sri Lanka was 1,796,000 ha, of which natural forests occupied 1,657,000 ha and plantations occupied 138,000 ha. The map below shows Sri Lankas major national parks, sanctuaries and reserves. However, some of the smaller protected areas are not shown on this map.
