Sophomore students are encouraged to sign up for the pre-ACT or PLAN test, which has a career interest section. The test is adminstered at Avon High School during the school day. 10th graders also have the option of taking the PSAT . This is excellent practice for college admission tests and helps students to begin to compete against college bound students nationally. Counselors will meet with all students to explain scores. Juniors should take the PSAT in the fall. This is the only opportunity to compete for the National Merit Scholars. Students are recommended to take the SAT and ACT twice during the year. Your scores will be postively influenced by taking a challenging course load. Standardized Testing Links Standardized Tests ACT PSAT /SAT

The American College Testing Program (ACT) is a comprehensive, guidance-oriented service that helps colleges, high schools, and students in transition from high school to college. Students participate in the program by completing an educational/biographical questionnaire, an interest inventory, and four tests of educational development in English, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Natural Sciences. After analyzing the information obtained, ACT prepares reports for use by students, high schools, and colleges in career and college planning, admissions, and placement, and academic advising. More than 2700 colleges and universities and other agencies accept ACT scores in lieu of SAT 1 Scores. The ACT is an achievement test. Achievement tests often reward the student who works hard more than an aptitude test like the SAT 1. Juniors achieving less than satisfactory results on a SAT I taken in the Spring may wish to consider taking the ACT during the Fall of the Senior year. The ACT is offered several times during the year at locations throughout the Columbia area to include Spring Valley High School. Who Should take the PSAT, SAT I, ACT or ASSET?

Extractions: Applicants are encouraged to take a third SAT-II subject test in a foreign language because it aids the language departments in determining placement. These tests must be taken by January (SAT-I and SAT-II) or February (ACT) of the senior year at the latest. Please consult with your high school guidance office or the College Board and ACT calendars to insure these tests are completed in a timely fashion. We strongly recommend that students DO NOT "hold" their SAT-II subject test scores under the Score Choice option as this delays the processing of their application. Students who apply for merit scholarships at Richmond should complete all standardized testing by the end of December of their senior year in high school. It is your responsibility to have official score reports sent to the University of Richmond.
