Extractions: Weather Weather is a primary factor which drives the emergency response activities of the Southern Area Coordination Center. Emergency response teams in the Southern Area are involved in wildfire suppression activities, hurricane recovery efforts, and flood and tornado recovery efforts. Accurate and timely weather information is critical to our mission and the mission of our partners and cooperators. This page has links to a variety of weather related web sites which provide information useful in understanding potential threats and corresponding emergency response needs. FIRE WEATHER Dry conditions can combine with lightning or human actions to ignite wildfires. Weather conditions such as humidity, precipitation, wind and temperature are used to predict fire behavior and determine staffing and equipment needs in order to prevent wildfires from spreading as well as contain them. Much of the weather information used is gathered routinely from the National Weather Service and remote weather stations located throughout the area. The National Weather Service issues fire weather reports including Red Flag Warnings indicating dangerous conditions favoring wildfire growth and erratic behavior. Other information about fire behavior and severity come from a variety of models. The Haines Index was developed specifically for wildfires whereas the the Keech Byrum Drought Index and the Palmer Drought Index, were both adapted for fire. All models provide firefighters information to help predict potential fire severity across the United States.

Extractions: INTRODUCTION TO TITAN TITAN is an acronym for Thunderstorm Identification Tracking and Nowcasting. It was developed by RAP/NCAR (National Center for Atmospheric Research, USA) for the display of radar data. There are no lisense requirements for TITAN. The TITAN system makes use of mdv (meteorological data format) format radar data for display. Forecasters do not really need to know how data gets ingested into TITAN, but some backgound will assist in understanding the system. There are 2 types of data required to run TITAN with all the options. They are: b. storm history and tracking files The large window is the rview display. It shows the radar fields with some background information of roads, towns, international and provincial boundaries and airports for orientation when the images are viewed. The options on the rview display will now be elaborated. Use this button to change the CAPPI layer you want to view. As a default, the composite field is displayed. The composite field is generated by taking the maximum reflectivity in the vertical. This is stored in level 0, as no radar data is availbale at that level. No radar scans below at m altitude. The level option is only applicable with radar reflectivity data.

The learner is a virtual house guest of the Castillo family in Fort Walton Beach, Florida . Over the course of seven days, Hurricane Erin forms in the Atlantic Ocean, crosses the Florida panhandle, and then makes another landfall at Fort Walton Beach. During these days, the learner is introduced to many basic concepts of atmospheric science, climate, and geography, while also learning some important and possibly life-saving safety and preparedness skills. Each day's scene is composed of three main pieces: the forecast update (accessed by clicking the TV), a safety interactive piece (accessed by clicking Hugo, the dog), and science and safety content available from a laptop computer (accessed by clicking the large, red, left arrow to go to the computer room). Pull-down menus on the laptop allow you to access content from previous days and to go to the tracking chart or worksheet. Safety and Preparedness Content The following hurricane safety and preparedness behaviors are modeled in the lessons and are generally accessed by clicking Hugo, the dog:

Extractions: EASTERN NORTH PACIFIC National Hurricane Center advisories contain the latest official analysis, forecast and warning information for Atlantic and eastern North Pacific tropical cyclones. To supplement these bulletins, the NHC generates graphical representations of some of this information. The graphics are based on the contents of the NHC Forecast/Advisory and are updated shortly after the issuance of each Forecast/Advisory (around 0300, 0900, 1500, 2100 UTC, and anytime a Special Forecast/Advisory is issued). The graphics are designed to be used by emergency managers, the media, and the public. These displays are visual representations of a portion of the information contained in the advisories. Some potentially critical information (e.g., forecast storm surge heights, and local considerations identified by emergency managers and individual offices of the National Weather Service, or by international meteorological services) is not shown in these displays. In addition, generation of these graphics is mostly automated, so some unexpected results are possible. Be cautious! Problems?
