Product Description

In childhood, the occasional bump or scrape comes with the territory. But serious injury is another matter, creating anxiety for even the most experienced parent.

Fortunately, unintentional injury can be prevented. In this essential guide, an eminent child safety specialist explains how to reduce the risk of childhood injury at home -- and beyond. Her tips help protect children from birth to age five -- those who are most vulnerable to serious injury. She describes how to provide a safe environment during the daily activities of sleeping, eating, bathing, dressing, playing, and traveling. The major hazards and potential injuries associated with each activity are identified along with the age when the child is at greatest risk. Illustrations, checklists, and summary charts complement the text and put valuable lessons and critical information at parents' fingertips.

From Crib to Kindergarten is an indispensable "how to" for parents, grandparents, teachers, babysitters, and daycare providers.

5-0 out of 5 stars An absolutely mandatory study text for first-time babysitters.
Author Dorothy A. Drago, MPH shares her decades of experience in the field of safety as a U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and a private safety consultant in From Crib to Kindergarten: The Essential Child Safety Guide. Written for parents and child care providers of all backgrounds, From Crib to Kindergarten covers how to reduce the risk of injury at home and beyond for children from birth to age five, a time when they are at the most vulnerable. Chapters discuss sleep safety, why infants should never sleep in an adult bed (an infant becoming wedged between an adult bed and the wall is the leading cause of infant suffocation death), preventing falls while changing diapers (caregivers should keep one hand on an infant or toddler at all times when changing the child on an elevated surface), hazardous clothing (buttons, snaps and shoelace accessories can come off and be choking hazards; drawstrings, ribbons and hoods can be strangling hazards), basic fire prevention, tips for preventing backyard drownings, and much more. Literally a lifesaver, From Crib to Kindergarten is a must-read not for parents, teachers, and child care professionals, and should be an absolutely mandatory study text for first-time babysitters. ... Product Description

This textbook draws on systems theory and applied psychology and stresses the importance of human agency within systems. It presents a new 'Qualitative Systems Approach' to safety management, offering both greater safety and economic savings. It presents a series of methodological 'tools' whose reliability and validity have been shown through extensive work in the rail and nuclear industries and that allow organizational and systems failures to be analyzed much more effectively in terms of quantity, precision and usefulness. Safety Management is for undergraduate and graduate students in occupational psychology, human factors, ergonomics and HCI, and the sociology of disasters and risk.

Product Description
The malicious contamination of food for terrorist purposes is a real and current threat, and deliberate contamination of food at one location could have global public health implications. This book responds to increasing concern in WHO s Member States that chemical, biological or radionuclear agents might be used deliberately to harm civilian populations and that food might be a vehicle for disseminating such agents.

The two major strategies for countering the threat of food sabotage are prevention and response, including preparedness.

Chapter 1 introduces the problem and places it in the context of other food safety emergencies. Chapter 2 outlines the preventive aspects that can be incorporated into food safety programmes to meet the new threat of food sabotage.

Chapter 3 addresses the surveillance, preparedness and response elements specific to food safety, to facilitate their inclusion in existing national emergency response plans and to achieve balance between threats to food safety and other threats.

In chapter 4, the current activities of WHO in this regard and a proposal for strengthening collaboration to assure more effective alert and response systems for food terrorism are presented.

Establishment and strengthening of food safety programmes will both increase Member Statescapacity to reduce the increasing burden of foodborne illness and help them to address the threat of food terrorism. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great addition to any new parents library!
This book is written by one of the most trusted names in the Pro-Consumer field: Consumer Reports. CR will test everything and give you an honest review, that is why I decided to purchase this book, since I'm a new father and wanted to provide the safest environment to my baby. This book gives you very good tips to protect your child anywhere and everywhere. Some of the details may apply to your home, some might not, but in summary, you will find everything you need to keep your little one away from known dangers, and that is priceless. For the price, this book is a steal. I recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Every Parent of an Infant or Toddler Should Read this Book
This book should be given to every mother of a new-born upon discharge from the hospital. It is broken down into chapters composed of short "tips" on how to improve the safety of your child at home.Even the most busy parent can read a few of the tips at a time and learn useful information.A few tips are common sense, but many reflect real world experience and insight. If you don't have an infant or toddler at home, buy it and give it as a gift to someone who does.It may be the most important gift a parent will ever receive.

5-0 out of 5 stars Baby Book 2
This was a good Amazon seller to deal with-good price and quick delivery. The book will be very helpful to our daughter who is expection her first child.

4-0 out of 5 stars Childprrofing and Safety
This book is well organized and clear, though I recommend that the nervous among us approach it with care.It is good to be vigilant, and the book is an excellent guide for the purpose, but a slavish attention to every admonishment would be inadvisable, or you will go nuts.Use it as a reference, not for night-time reading.

3-0 out of 5 stars Wish There Were More How To's As Well...
Great book for first time parents in understanding what to childproof, but I wish there were more how to install instructions. I also wish that they'd give more information on people to "hire" to help you. It just didn't give enough information. It's a good start though. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars In response
I have a copy of this book as well, and I decided to check on the comments of the last reviewer. I didn't find any mention of waiting 1-3 minutes before calling 911 in cases of CPR. In fact, the book makes a point of notputting off calling 911, especially if you haven't practiced CPR before. The book provides natural remedies interspersed in the text. They are notedwith an icon next to the paragraph so the reader will know that these arealternatives to regular medicine. I am not an advocate of natural medicine,so I really didn't pay much attention to those paragraphs.I do suggestthat anyone really serious in first aid should take a class (from RedCross, for example). That is the only way you can safely practice CPRbefore really performing it.

1-0 out of 5 stars First Aid and Safety For Dummies
I have been a big fan of the "For Dummies" series and own many copies of their books. However, my most recent purchase, First Aid and Safety for Dummies, has been extremely disappointing. The purpose ofreading this book was to find a book that my first aid and CPR studentscould reference for more details than the standard class covered. However,I found the book to have incorrect information, and information thatcontradicts the nationally accepted standards. The authors are medicaljournalist with no documented emergency medical experience. The onlysection of the book that had reasonable information was the "SpecialSituations" section. The first aid, and preparation section hasrecommendations that could be harmfull, even deadly if followed. Forexample, the book mentions numerous times that first aid and CPR should beperformed for 1-2 minutes before EMS(911) is activated, the nationalstandard is; as soon as an adult person is found unresponsive to activate911. The reason is that most adults go unconscious or into cardiac arrestis due to an irregular heart rhythm, this rhythm can only be reversed withdefibrillation by a portable defibrillator (like in the show ER). This iswhy most communities have police, fire, and ambulances carrying theseunits, airlines also now carry them. A delay of a "few" minutescan mean the difference between life and death. The book also makes arecommendation for during an asthma attack to use the herbal supplementephedra (it mixes alternative medicine in with traditional medicine, duringthe first aid section;versus having a seperate chapter addressingalternative medicine). Ephedra has been known to cause deaths in healthyyoung people (it is used as an energy boost, simular to caffeine)someonemay misinterpret this and use it alongside with a prescibed asthma inhaler, this could be deadly. These are just a sampling of the mistakes(personally, the two most scariest in my opinion). I have written IDG booksand hope to get a response. My recommendation is if you want a book onFirst Aid or CPR stick with a nationally recognized organization (i.e.American Red Cross, American Heart Association, National SafetyCouncil)many of these publicationsare available online. And mostimportantly, take a class, the books are invaluable, but so isn't the handson experience you will recieve. I am writing this as a First Aid and CPRInstructor with 12 years of emergency medicine experience. Once again, other than this particular book, I have enjoyed and found the "ForDummies" series very informative. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Comprehensive Resource
Holtzman's book is a full soup-to-nuts resource for any parent who has questions about how to keep their children as safe as possible. Her approach is supportive without scare tactics and her style is very readable, full of bullet points, checklists and call out boxes.

Although it's called "The Safe Baby" it really is about safety for all children. The book takes you through each room in the house as well as additional scenarios that can cause concern such as poisons, hiring a baby sitter, gun safety, fire safety, etc.

The appendix is full of additional resources that are so helpful including common poisonous houseplants, recall information, safety products and additional checklists.

This book would make a great shower gift for a new mom or a gift for any mom who needs some reassurance about keeping her kids safe. Holtzman's expertise as well as being a mom makes her a very valuable resource herself.

3-0 out of 5 stars Common sense with few specifics
Common sense may well be the most uncommon sense of all, but I found this book to be full of generic and obvious advice.I was hoping for specifics and checklists and ideas of which types of baby proofing products are best, and instead I got a lot of very general advice that I had already acquired just by reading general baby books, watching the news and having relatively good sense. This book may well be geared towards someone who has never considered baby safety until this point, but even so, specifics would have been appreciated. If the intended reader is starting from absolute scratch this book may well be worth purchasing. It may also be a very good book if you have concerns that a family member's sense of child and infant safety is not up to scratch, and want to educate that family member without sounding preachy. If, however, you are fairly well read or are looking for checklists and specific baby proofing advice for your home, you may well find yourself disappointed in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Safe Baby
Comprehensive and well organized.Very useful guide and refresher about the dangers lurking in the every day world. As in all things, be moderate and reasonable in following this to avoid excessive anxiety.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent baby shower gift
Every parent wants their child to be safe. "The Safe Baby: A Do-It-Yourself Guide to Home Safety and Healthy Living" is an expanded and revised edition of Debra Smiley Holtzman's previous volumes on doing what one can to baby proofing one's home. The home is a dangerous place, and it's impossible to assure complete safety, but there are many things a parent can do to lower the chances of an accident. With plenty of tips on advice on a more safe environment for one's child, "The Safe Baby" is a fine volume for parents to have on hand, and an excellent baby shower gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars Safe and smart
Debra Holtzman's revised edition of her award-winning "The Safe Baby" (2005) contains a myriad of essential advice and resources - both up-to-date and relevant - for all parents and grandparents. This "all-in-one" guidebook encompasses the basics of child safety and the obstacles that parents typically encounter in the hectic and often chaotic world of parenting.Holtzman elaborates on subjects ranging from crib safety to baby food, from buying the healthiest foods to picking the right babysitter, from traveling safely with babies to ensuring a hazard-free environment back at home. These are just a few of the topics that form the backbone to "The Safe Baby," as Holtzman pays close attention to detail in her "how-to" guide of maintaining a sanctuary for all babies.

I personally recommend this revised edition of "The Safe Baby" for its sheer amount of vital information for the uprearing of infants, as well as the countless tips for saving money and being environmentally-friendly in the process. As a highly-esteemed professional in the field of child health and safety, Mrs. Holtzman is the "go-to" expert and her latest book is especially and undeniably a "safe" buy. ...
