5-0 out of 5 stars Cats of Kittyville
Loved this book!Talks about rescuedcats that are sent to a rescue group in Utah. They do GREAT work there and should write a lot more books. It contains many heartwarming pictures, tells histories of their animals and concludes each story with the happy outcomes! It's a good one for cat lovers!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read book for anyone who cares about cats
Beat Friends Sanctuary is known, through the National Geographic TV show "Dogtown", for their rescue and care of dogs considered by most shelters to be "hopeless." Among other dogs, they took in many of Michael Vick's fighting dogs and rehabilitated them to become loving pets.

So I was very happy to see this book about Best Friend's rescues and care of cats. "Kittyville" is a section of the sanctuary devoted to our feline friends. Maybe some day, there will be "Kittyville" TV shows.

Especially striking was the description of "The Great Kitty Rescue," where 600 cats were rescued from a hoarder (who supposedly was working for a cat rescue organization). One of my own adopted cats was rescued by a local animal control agency from a hoarder. Animal hoarders seem to believe that they are "taking care of" and "loving" their animals -- even though they force their animals to live in torture chambers where they are crowded into cages, wracked with diseases and rarely if even given any sort of human love. Most cats rescued from hoarders have to be euthanized because of poor health and lack of socialization. My own cat was one of the fortunate ones; though he suffered from a terrible case of fleas, he was reasonably healthy. Though he was terribly frightened, he had now blossomed into a wonderful, loving kitty.

The cats rescued in The Great Kitty Rescue were scared, neglected, diseased; many were unsocialized. The devoted staff at Best Friends took over their care and rehabilitated most of them. There are individual accounts of rescued cats who may very well have been put to sleep as "hopeless" in most shelters. However, the Best Friends people never gave up on them.

This book is coffee-table size, with many photographs as well as descriptions. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Touching and Beautiful

I came across the worderful gem of a book at the library recently. It was just wonderful.

Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in southern Utah is home to some two thousand abused and abandoned animals: cats, dogs, birds, horses rabbits and more. The take animals from other shelters and rescue groups, and even have a rapid response team in place that conducts rescues after natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina.

Featured in this beautifully illustrated book are spotlight cats on nearly everypage, and a story about them as well. Cat lovers will melt when they see these beautiful furballs, and many who read this book will surely shed a tear or two in the process.

The caring never stops at Kittyville, where even cats with special needs are give a new opportunity at life. Even the unadoptable: the sick, the older or those cats that have suffered trauma will enjoy a good life, for the rest of their life at this wonderful sanctuary.

If you love cats, and love reading about happy endings for all of God's creatures, then check out this book. I really loved it, and hope you will too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book

Product Description
This inspiring new book gives readers an inside look at the dogs who are rescued and rehabilitated by Best Friends Animal Society at Dogtown, part of the largest no-kill animal haven in the United States. This sanctuary hosts hundreds of dogs from around the world (including 22 pit bulls who were rescued from their painful lives with Michael Vick), as well as cats, horses, guinea pigs, rabbits, goats, and various other animals - between 1,500-2,000 animals in all. Dogtown is the subject of a television series on the National Geographic Channel; new episodes will begin September 5, 2008. Like the TV show, Dogtown depicts the engrossing stories of the dogs that are rescued and rehabilitated at the facility by its top-notch staff of veterinarians and trainers. Readers will learn about the relationships that flourish between the dogs and the trainers, and see how happy endings are possible for these dogs. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dogtown is a Happy Place
The stories about the dogs are very uplifting. The photos are simply beautiful. I really liked how the author included the blueprints for the kennels. Bob Summerville's work here is really well thought out. I know this book is an inspiration to dog owners & people who want to adopt dogs.

4-0 out of 5 stars Happy Book with Lovely Photographs
I am not sure who this book was directed at but it almost seems it would be a nice book for an animal loving, older child or an adult who just wants to relax and flip through with a light read. It contained lovely images and stories of dogs that were helped at Dogtown. It was not jammed full with text but was pleasant and enjoyable. It did not take very long to read but I did appreciate the upbeat tone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dogtown: A Sanctuary for Rescued Dogs
I watch the TV show "Dogtown", so thoroughly enjoyed reading stories about the rescued animals.I love the work they do at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful story of a great place
This was the first Dogtown book that I read and I found it so uplifting and engaging. Great stories and photos. I had been watching the show for quite a while when I found this book --- a wonderful companion to the show. The book is a beautiful testament to the great people who live and work there and take care of these animals every day. Dogtown is a sanctuary in the truest sense of the word - it is a place of refuge or safety.

Product Description
All to whom wild Nature is one of the greatest glories of the Earth, all who know its higher significance for civilized man to-day, and all who consequently prize it as an heirloom for posterity, are asked to help in keeping the animal life of Labrador from being wantonly done to death.

There is nothing to cause disagreement among the three main classes of people most interested in wild life--the men whose business depends in any way on animal products, the sportsmen, and the Nature-lovers of every kind. There are very good reasons why the general public should support the scheme. And there are equally good reasons why it should be induced to do so by simply telling it the truth about the senseless extermination that is now going on.

SUPPLEMENT TO AN ADDRESS ON
Animal Sanctuaries in Labrador
BY
LIEUT.-COLONEL WILLIAM WOOD, F.R.S.C.
The appeal prefixed to the original _Address_ in 1911 announced the
issue of the present supplement in 1912, and asked experts and other
leaders of public opinion to set the subject on firm foundations by
contributing advice and criticism.
The response was most gratifying. The twelve hundred review copies
sent out to the Canadian press, and the hundreds more sent out to
general and specialist periodicals in every part of the
English-speaking world, all met with a sympathetic welcome, and were
often given long and careful notices. Many scientific journals, like
the _Bulletin of the Zoological Society of America_, sporting
magazines, like the Canadian _Rod and Gun_, and zoophil organs, like
the English _Animals' Guardian_, examined the _Address_ thoroughly
from their respective standpoints. The _Empire Review_ has already
reprinted it _verbatim_ in London, and an association of outing men
are now preparing to do the same in New York.
But though the press has been of the greatest service in the matter of
publicity the principal additions to a knowledge of the question have
come from individuals. Naturalists, sportsmen and leaders in public
life have all helped both by advice and encouragement. Quotations from
a number of letters are published at the end of this supplement. The
most remarkable characteristic of all this private correspondence and
public notice, as well as the spoken opinions of many experts, is
their perfect agreement on the cardinal point that we are wantonly
living like spendthrifts on the capital of our wild life, and that the
general argument of the _Address_ is, therefore, incontrovertibly
true. ... Read more

Product Description
I gladly take this opportunity of thanking the many experts whose kind help has given my papers whatever real value they possess. Some of these experts have never been called so in their lives, and will be greatly astonished to find that they are called so now. But when I know they are the thing, why should I hesitate about the name? In any proper meaning of the word there are several first-class "experts" among my friends who go fishing, sealing, whaling, hunting, trapping, "furring" or guiding for their livelihood. And I hereby most gratefully acknowledge all I have learnt during many a pleasant day with them, afloat and ashore. The other kind of experts, those who are called so by the world at large, have been quite as generous with their information and advice. In fact, they have been so very generous that perhaps I should call myself the editor, rather than the author, of the _Supplement_, as more than half of it is occupied by extracts from their letters concerning the _Address_.

It might be as well to restate the argument of this _Address_ in the fewest possible words.

An eagerly exploiting people in an easily exploited country, we are only too apt to live on the capital of all our natural resources. We are also in the habit of developing one thing at the expense of everything else connected with it. The value of these other things often remains unrecognised till too late. For instance, reckless railways burn forests which ensure a constant flow of water for irrigation, navigation, power plant, and fish, besides providing wood for timber and shelter for bird and beast. The presence of a construction gang generally means the needless extermination of every animal in the neighbourhood. The presence of mills means the needless absence of fish. And the presence of ill-governed cities means the needless and deadly pollution of water that never was meant for a sewer. The idea is the same in each disgraceful case. It is, simply, to snatch whatever is most coveted for the moment, with least trouble to one's self, and at no matter what expense to Nature and the future of man. The cant phrase is only too well known--"Lots more where that came from". Exploitation is destroying now what civilisation will long to restore hereafter. This is lamentably true about material things. It is truer still about the higher than material things. And it is truest of all about both the material and higher values of wild life, which we administer as if we were the final spendthrift heirs and not trustees.
