Product Description
Brie and apricot jam on a baguette; spinach and goat cheese on a croissant; blue cheese and fresh figs on crusty Italian bread: this is not your mother's grilled cheese sandwich. In Great Grilled Cheese, cheese expert and award-winning cookbook author Laura Werlin presents 50 scrumptious grilled cheese and panini recipes that range from the traditional to the contemporary. In addition to the more inventive combinations, including grilled cheese for dessert, there's always room at the table for the classics: grilled American on white, or apple, ham, and cheddar on sourdough.

Werlin discusses techniques-nonstick versus cast-iron pan, whether to cover during cooking, how to use the ultrapopular panini machine. Maren Caruso's tantalizing photographs perfectly convey the appeal of creamy melted cheese pressed between two slices of crisp, buttery bread. For cheese aficionados, parents whose kids insist on grilled cheese at every meal, and the kid in all of us who craves comfort food, Great Grilled Cheese will satisfy everyone's cheese dreams.AUTHOR BIO: LAURA WERLIN, who won a 2004 James Beard Award for her book The All American Cheese and Wine Book, is a food journalist and cheese expert whose articles have appeared in Saveur, Cooking Light, and Country Living. In addition to having written two books on cheese, The New American Cheese (2000) and The All American Cheese and Wine Book (2003), Werlin writes a biweekly syndicated column on cheese.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nothing too fancy, but...
I bought this book for my husband who is a very picky eater, and who will turn anything into a sandwich.I thought that this book would help make some interesting and fun recipes that I could enjoy as well as he could.A lot of the recipes are very basic, but there are also a lot of good ideas.I would recommend this item, but not at full asking price...I would definitely buy it from a private seller!!

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT SANDWICHES!
I HAVE NEVER BEEN A BIG SANDWHICH FAN OF ANY KIND OF SANDWHICH BUT THIS SANDWICH MAKER IS TOPS! IT HAS CHANGED MY MIND! GREAT FOR USING LEFTOVERS BY MAKING A POCKET SANDWICH! I GAVE ONE TO A RELATIVE FOR HIS BIRTHDAY! GREAT FOR A BUSY BACHELOR ON THE GO! I AM PLANNING ON GIVING ONE TO A FRIEND SOON.

3-0 out of 5 stars A great Recipe Book
Haven't had the book long enough to do many of the recipes, and in the process of moving out of state. This book will go with me, there are many in there I want to try.

1-0 out of 5 stars Yawn
You already know or have these recipes unless you are 9 years old and in which case you shouldn't be allowed near a stove or hot pan.

4-0 out of 5 stars Scrumptious recipes, numerically challenged
The recipes look wonderful. We haven't tried any yet since we only got the book yesterday. But I can't help but notice, p. 18, that Ms. Werlin really does believe "regular sandwich bread" is only 1/4" thick. Our current loaf of ordinary sliced bread has slices almost exactly 1/2" thick. Maybe her "regular" bread is diet fodder. That would help to explain her trim appearance commented on by an earlier reviewer. At any rate, we look forward to many happy grilled cheese sandwiches, most with (for us) exotic ingredients.

Product Description
Got a hankering for a Kentucky Hot Brown? A serious need for a Navajo Taco? Craving an authentic Florida Cuban? Then this is the cookbook for you! You can thank John Montagu, the Fourth Earl of Sandwich, for its invention, though he probably wasn't the first guy to put stuff between two pieces of bread. No matter who created it, the sandwich is still the king of food in America. We eat more than 45 billion sandwiches per year, with the average person consuming 193 sandwiches annually! That's a lot of mustard!

From Po'Boys to Lobster Rolls, Buffalo Burgers to Muffalettas, Becky Mercuri has a recipe for every sandwich imaginable, and a location in each region where you can find the real thing. Or, fix up a mess of your favorite regional sammies without ever leaving the comfort of your own kitchen!

Learn about the history of the sandwich, the birth of Wonder Bread, the influence of immigrant flavors and foods, and the origins of each unique regional specialty sandwich in this affordable little American culinary road trip.

Becky Mercuri, has been a contributing editor for Cookbook Collectors Exchange, a nationally distributed newsletter, for seven years. She was the editor of a popular food and travel column for the Wellsville Daily Reporter in western New York. An accomplished cook who has gathered recipes throughout the world, Becky is a contributing member to several organizations and their national newsletters, an avid student of culinary history, a member of the Southern Foodways Alliance, and a well-respected food and travel writer based in New York State. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Part cookbook, part Americana
This cookbook has a story for every recipe. Since the recipes are organized by state, there are lots of regional specialties (i.e. lobster roll, hot browns). The recipes are very much along the lines of Road Food Sanwiches, and if you own that cookbook, then you will find a lot of overlap with this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Eats from All the States
If you've ever watched PBS at pledge time, there's a good chance you've had the pleasure of seeing Rick Sebak's incredible gustatory extravaganza called "Sandwiches That You Will Like." This available-on-DVD program "toasts" many delicious, mouth-watering, tastebud-tempting, bread-and-filling creations from local eateries around the country, such as lobster rolls at Red's Eats in Wiscasset, Maine, chipped-ham "slammers" at Isaly's in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and hot browns at the Camberley Brown Hotel in Louisville, Kentucky. Watching Mr. Sebak's nationwide odyssey to find America's best sandwiches is guaranteed to rev up your appetite.

"American Sandwich" is kind of a companion volume to Mr. Sebak's masterpiece--it includes some of the same memorable, droolworthy sandwiches--but it is actually much more. While Mr. Sebak took a "shotgun" approach in his travels around the country, "American Sandwich" goes it one better by featuring recipes for one hallmark sandwich each from all 50 states.

After a short introduction to the mystique of sandwiches, and a brief timeline tracing the rising popularity of sandwiches in American culinary culture, author Becky Mercuri gets to the "meat" of the matter. Alphabetized by state, she covers each signature sandwich in two to four readable, well-laid-out pages that, in addition to the recipe, contain other interesting, useful tidbits. Each sandwich gets a sidebar that describes its origin and history--the story of the muffaletta, for example, takes up a whole page of the Louisiana section. There's a "Where to Go" entry (sometimes more than one) with the address of the best place to sample the sandwich when you're on the road. You'll know to get your Iowa loosemeat sandwich at Taylor's Maid-Rite in Marshalltown, for example. Many sections also have a "Need a Quick Fix?" entry that lists mail-order or Internet sources for ingredients or for complete sandwiches. Vintage sepia-toned photos illustrate each section, many of them old postcards that touch on each state's history and provide glimpses of life in much simpler times. The only thing missing is pictures of the actual sandwiches themselves, which may seem like a strange omission for a cookbook, but in no way detracts from its value and usefulness--the "word pictures" alone are enough to put your salivary glands on overtime.

As a bona fide "foodie," adventurous cook and inveterate road-tripper, I can't praise "American Sandwich" enough, and I can't recommend it too highly. These sandwiches are classic road food in the best sense of the term, and Ms. Mercuri's work includes the best of both possible worlds--she tells you where to find them and also how to make them yourself--a winning combination. Now you'll have to excuse me while I go put together a Cuban (the recipe from Miami, Florida, is on page 28) and pop it into the sandwich press...

5-0 out of 5 stars A fun & interesting read.
As a foodie I find this very interesting. It's an easy read, historical & educational. You'll want to look up what sandwich is " your state".Then you might actually go to the kitchen and make it. Excuse me, I've got to go make a pork tenderloin sandwich.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Americana
If you are looking for a book with recipes for those classic American staple sandwiches this is it. Not only will you find the better known Reuben, French dip, Philly cheesesteak etc, there are other recipes from around the country that you probably have never heard of. If you are interested in the actual history of each recipe, you will find that here as well. Great buy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Just Another Pretty Sandwich Book
Becki Mercuri has assembled an exciting, usable, creative offering of favorite sandwiches from across the U.S. that anyone in search of flavor diversity should grab immediately. Both old favorites and new discoveries await for anyone who likes the idea of more than the everyday "same old sandwich" you can get anywhere. With names like "Navajo Taco" or "Hot Brown," the names themselves can clue you in to the experiences you can taste with this book. ... Product Description

The humble peanut butter and jelly or bologna and cheese or corned beef on rye—no matter your cooking expertise, chances are you’ve made and eaten countless sandwiches in your lifetime. It’s quick, it’s simple, and it’s open to infinite variety and inventiveness. If there’s something bread- or bun-like in your cupboard, there is a sandwich waiting to happen.

Though sandwiches are a near-universal food, their origin can be traced to a very precise historical figure: John Montagu, the Fourth Earl of Sandwich, who, sometime before 1762 being too busy to stop for dinner, asked for some cold beef to be brought to him between two slices of bread. In Sandwich, award-winning food writer Bee Wilson unravels the mystery of how the Earl invented this most elementary but delicious way of eating. Wilson explores what sandwiches might have been like before the eighteenth century, why the name sandwich stuck, and how the Earl’s invention took off so quickly around the globe.

Wilson brings together a wealth of material to trace how the sandwich has evolved, looking at sandwiches around the world, from the decadent meatball hoagie to the dainty cucumber tea sandwich. Loved the world over, this popular food has surprisingly never before been the subject of a book-length history until now.

3-0 out of 5 stars Remembering Hawaii
After hiking in Kauai I just wanted to slip into a book to relive the colors and smell of the landscape. This book did it for me. She takes you back to the island, introduces you to some of her native friends, and reveals some local knowlege. I loved her descriptions of the landscape. I hope to get back to Hawaii sooner than later. Mahalo!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but a hard read.
I like the biography on Isabella Bird, "Amazing Traveler, by Evelyn Kaye" much better. Anything by Isabella is amazing, but the detailed way in which she writes her sister can be a bit hard to read at times.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must
The 5 star reviews are correct. This book is interesting from severalperspectives:

Women's History; she was quite a gal. Single, traveling alone, great adventures on every page. "Rollicking good time!" is the cliche. She is quickly bored by Honolulu "society" and itches to get moving.

Mores of 19th Century Western (European, British, American) culture in respect to women. The changes Isabella makes as she adapts to new lifestyles.

Personal accounts and insight of historical figures, White and Hawai'ian, and her instincts and frustrations with self-serving individuals of all races. She meets history-altering people mentioned in Shoal of Time.

Detailed account of sugar production.

Detailed accounts of the landscape, especially of the Island of Hawai'i, before nearly everything valuable was obliterated. Sense of place.

Detailed accounts of flora and fauna.

Horse riding styles, quality and treatment of horses. Discussion of a variety of methods of post contact Hawaiian transportation. Foot, horse, ship.

Details of a variety of Hawaiian life styles.

Accounts of mission schools and second generation missionaries.

Enjoy and learn!

5-0 out of 5 stars Six Months in the Sandwich Islands
Isabella Lucy Bird won fame in her own time as th most remarkable woman traveler of the nineteenth century, and Six Months in the Sandwich Islands, in which she describes her sojourn in Hawaii in 1873, is one of the gems of Pacific literature. It is safe to say that no other book about Hawaii surpasses it in fascination. Much of the charm of Isabella Bird's writing is due to her use of personal letters for conveying her experiences and her impressions. The thirty-one letters that compose the book were written to her beloved sister Henrietta, who dutifully stayed at home in Edinburgh to take care of the household while Isabella was away on her travels.

1-0 out of 5 stars never recieved
such a good book. so good i didn't even recieve it. paid the money. confirmed the order. recieved a mail box full of air. f these people.they said it would take a month to send it. which didn't sit well with me, it's a book! not ammo or something that is regulated. regardless that was over two months ago.i give these peps two middle fingers up! way up!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Good Springboard for Creating Your Own Recipes, (but not great on its own)
I bought this book used, but I'm still annoyed that I spent that much on it.I ilke that the recipes inspire the cook to make sandwich combinations that they might otherwise not dream up.But, as other reviewers have stated, the portion sizes are way off.In addition, everything is way too sweet.I made the "O" sandwich, thinking that somehow the insane amount of honey inside would end up being okay.Luckily I didn't stir everything in before just trying it with just a little bit.The curry sauce is 3 cups of honey and 1 1/2 cups of mustard, plus spices. So, two sandwiches are supposed to have 2 cups of this sauce, which means that one sandwich has 3/4 cups of honey (plus what is in the bread) which is just crazy. Can you imagine eating 2 cups of chicken and 3/4 cups of honey just on one sandwich?Anyway, I will be getting rid of this book- I like that the recipes are fresh and original, but I feel that an average or better-than-average cook can come up with better stuff on their own.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst sandwich book ever
No. No. No. I thought the recipes in this book would be good because Oprah is fat and can afford the good stuff. I was wrong the recipes are gross. Nancy Silverton's sandwich book is way better.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not really for beginners
As I see it this book is a great tool for the more experienced cook, not for beginners. It has some wonderful and tasty recipes and ideas, but the sheer amounts she suggests you make are a little ridiculous (18 cups of flour??). Now I say its for a more experienced cook because basically if you know your way around a kitchen and have done a lot of recipes you can pretty much figure out how to properly cut the amounts in half and "tweak" some of ingredients so it works for you (I like to omit the Lawry's Lemon Pepper that is in almost every recipe)and I know how to store breads properly even though she does not go into detail about that. So I would say it is lacking in proper instruction and the amounts are far too great for the average home cook, but if you can work around those things, it is a handy little book.

1-0 out of 5 stars What could possibly contain this dough?
I got this book for Christmas because I wanted to start baking my own bread, tried a batch, and then put it on the shelf.I pulled it out again today and was reminded why it has absolutely no use for me.The author clearly did not make any effort to make these recipes relevant for a home cook. The bread recipes call for 16 cups of flour!I have a Kitchenaid, but it can't deal with that. When I made the initial batch I dove in blindly and when all that dough started to rise it was unbelievable!I actually had to get out a large size turkey roasting pan to let the dough rise because nothing else could contain it.It was like a monster.I think the bread was good-don't really remember-I was too distracted by the every growing masses of dough all over my kitchen. I think I am going to send this book to Goodwill because unless I cannot envision a time that I will ever have access to the kinds of tools needed to deal with the quantities of bread made by this book. ... The ideas weren't any better than what you typically find in science books as "end of the chapter" labs. They're very basic and don't do a good job ofexplaining the science in depth enough to handle questions kids may have properly. If you just want ideas, go for it, but its not really worth the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Ideas
As a teacher of three children at home and a former middle school teacher I bought this book. It has been a great addition to our learning. It is a series of hands on activities that are simple, cheap and use a sandwhich bag.

The one problem with this book was that it does not have enough ideas. It is very thin. The other problem and directly related to the first is that there might only be one experiment for the rock cycle, one experiment for human body etc. It would be nice to see more lessons.

If I had to pick two, I'd pick the other two in the series- soda bottle science and coffee can science.

Well worth the money.
Enjoy. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Judge (or Buy) this Book by its Cover
There is little to NO information in this manual specific to a Sandwich Shop/Deli Business. These authors seem to have simply taken a "how to start a small business" pamphlet and replaced the term "small business" with "sandwich shop" throughout.Amazon.com should really investigate this. If customers want to read about starting a small business, there are a million manuals out there, all better than this one. What set this apart was the industry-specific title -- a good marketing ploy, but not an honest one. The only sandwich shop/deli-specific information it contains are a few statistics at the end that may not even be current.

2-0 out of 5 stars A lot of strange, unfamiliar & unappetizing recipes.
I went through this entire cookbook 2-3 times before finding a recipe that sounded worthwhile: Corndogs! And the recipe was awful. I'm a good cook, so I don't think it was me. I followed the recipe right. Ended up donating the book to the library after that one attempt.

The instructional portion at the front of the book (all in the Good Cook series have this) was somewhat interesting--this cookbook really covers a lot of things you might not think of as snacks (mayo-less deviled eggs, tongue sandwich, choux, etc.), or even at all--about a 2.5 on a 5-point scale where 5 is Great! ... Product Description

The delightful sisters and owners of Alice's Tea Cup share nearly one hundred recipes from their charming and wildly popular Manhattan restaurants

For almost ten years, Alice's Tea Cup has been a destination in New York City for locals and tourists alike who crave a scrumptious afternoon tea without airs or pretension. Haley and Lauren Fox learned at an early age that tea was more than just a beverage—it was an event to be shared and protected—and they divulge their tea-making philosophy and dozens of delectable recipes in this beautiful cookbook.

Embodying the mantra "tea turned on its ear," Alice's Tea Cup serves up unique twists to traditional Victorian tea fare, including:

Savories—Lapsang Souchong Smoked Chicken Salad and Cucumber Watercress Sandwiches with Lemon Chive Butter

Baked goods—Banana Nutella Cake and Mint Black Bottom Cupcakes

Sweet treats—Alice'S'mores and Queen of Tarts

Tea selections—from African Dew to Rooibos Bourbon

Specialty drinks—Alice's Tea-jito and Ginger Mar-tea-ni

And of course Alice's world-famous tender, moist scones—including nineteen versions, from pumpkin to peanut butter and jelly to ham and cheese

Haley and Lauren also show you how to throw a personalized "Curiouser and Curiouser" tea party with household props and offer lots of other ways to celebrate with tea and festive food. From salads to scones, pancakes to cupcakes, afternoon tea to evening mar-tea-nis, this fabulous cookbook lets you enjoy Alice's mouthwatering recipes without leaving home.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this book!
I own over 80 books on tea and I have to say this is one of my favorites. My family ate at Alice's Tea Cup for a celebration, this summer, and everything was scrumptious. I am thrilled with the book because it has all the delicious recipes I enjoyed in their tearoom. So far, I've made the molasses ginger cookies and the curried chicken sandwiches and both recipes turned out great. Their recipe ideas are very creative. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Adorable
Engaging text with a great message for children.Probably every child has, at one time or another, felt that his parents are just not as cool as those of another.Following a "the grass is always greener..." theme the author takes the reader on a journey through the eyes of Rafferty Fox.Fortunately the theme of "there's no place like home" wins in the end.Well illustrated.I recently met the author at a teaching conference. She is an enthusiastic speaker/teacher/writer/parent who has a wonderful ability to incorporate all the elements needed in a good piece of children's fiction.Don't miss this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars You'll want to be a "Moon Sandwich Mom", too!
This is a wonderful children's book that moms will love, too.It brought a tear to my eye and made me realize again how much the small things we do for our children, like cutting a sandwich into a moon shape, really matterto them. This would make a great Mother's Day gift if wrapped in a basketwith a moon-shaped cookie cutter! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Starting & Running a Sandwich-Coffee Bar
I ordered this book thinking it was written by and for use in the United States. However upon receiving it I realized quickly that it was written by and for use in the United Kingdom. Therefore a large portion is related to their terms, currency and their particular health departments. It is probably a great book for their use but not for here in the states. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple, delicious sandwiches!
First, a note:This book came out several years ago, before you could buy anything resembling a panini press! So the title, which was perfectly appropriate when the book was published, now may seem misleading to people who are looking for recipes to go with their newly-purchased home panini press.Folks, this is NOT a book of grilled panini recipes. But what it is, is a book of simple, delicious Italian sandwiches made with easy-to-find ingredients.

I bought this book when it first came out, and several of the recipes have become standards. The Orange Marmalade Fritatta Panino is a delicious, barely-sweet breakfast sandwich I make at least a couple of times a month. It's so simple I don't even need to read the recipe anymore.

The grilled chocolate sandwich shown on the cover is a simple, delicious snack, and always surprises friends or guests.

There are other sandwiches I've loved from this book, made with roasted red peppers, oil-cured olives, tasty tangy goat cheese... But trust me that every sandwich is well planned, beautifully photographed, and every one I've made is worth trying.

1-0 out of 5 stars Pretentious
I was so disappointed in this book because there were very few recipes that called for a panini maker. In addition, most of the recipes consisted of specialty foods that you wouldn't normally have in your pantry or fridge. For example some of the ingredients needed were: Greek oregano, white bread made with unbleached flour, cornichons (aka pickled gherkin cucumbers), imported canned tuna, etc.The author recommended only "high end", imported/gourmet foods that were organic. She even noted that although expensive, it's worth spending the extra money.I personally can't see putting all that effort into finding gourmet ingredients for a sandwich.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'd like to counteract the unfair criteria of some of the other reviews.
Many reviews of this book complain that it was recommended as a companion to a purchases of a panini press or sandwich maker, and I can see why they are disappointed. Amazon has many strengths, but the quality of its recommendations is not one of them. These reviews are helpful in letting purchasers of sandwich makers know that this book doesn't have many of the grilled meat and cheese sandwich recipes that many people are looking for.

I wish, however, that so many of these reviews didn't give the book one star and lower its rating, because it's a lovely book with ideas for simple, delicious toppings and fillings for grilled bread. These are recipes that would be appropriate for a light lunch or supper, for appetizers, or for cocktail parties. Many of the recipes feature lemon, capers, olives, oregano, hot pepper flakes, and garlic, adding flavor to vegetable fillings or small amounts of fish, chicken, or cheese. The recommendations that ingredients be organic, cage-free, etc., are not nearly as frequent as some disgruntled reviewers would have you believe, and of course you are always free to use ordinary grocery store fruit, vegetables and eggs.

There are also some sweet recipes. I love the recipe for Baked Fresh Fruit Bruschetta: sliced nectarines baked on bread with a little butter and sugar, served for breakfast with caffe latte.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed would be generous
To say I was disappointed in this book would be a generous statement. The author(s) apparently wanted an elitest book geared towards the "natural is good" movement, i.e free range chicken eggs, etc. Also, they seemed to try and hide a crosteni/bruschetta book in the garb of a panni book; very few grilled panini recipes. It is a diservice to recommend this book with a panini press.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome appliance
I love this product and use it several times a week.Whoever suggested getting a paninni machine with flat cooking surfaces was right. You can do so many more things.Imagine french toast done perfectly with no flipping.Reheats pizza, rolls etc perfectally - and makes awesome sandwiches. No fat necessary for use. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good advice from across the pond
First, this book was targeted toward folks in the UK who are looking to open a coffee shop/sandwich shop. However, I still found that much of the advice was generally applicable. I think that there is a lot of common sense advice (i.e. do your research, plan before you open a business), but it is still sound advice nonetheless.

There is quite a bit of the book that is unusable for an American reader. The sections on legal issues, health regulations, employee issues, suppliers, etc., aren't applicable in the US. It just isn't as useful as a book written for an American audience would have been. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Kindle edition more than hardcover
At the time of this review, the kindle edition of this book is $ 2.11 more than the hardcover is going for on Amazon.

1-0 out of 5 stars Fantasy Food for Fantasy Children
This author lives in alternative universe where 1) parents have the time to prepare nearly all of the items in it like "spinach omelet with potatoes, zucchini, and tomato" and 2) children are willing to eat stuff like "orzo salad."Maybe if you don't have a job this might work. And maybe if your child is is an adult it might work too. It's a huge waste of time buying this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great purchase.
There are so many great interesting ideas. Perhaps not all are great for children but we also use the ideas for our lunches as well. Some are very easy while others are a bit more involved. I need to get back to this book so that wehave more interesting lunches instead of doing the mundane cold cuts.

3-0 out of 5 stars Chicken, Mayo and Tortillas
I was really excited to get this book based on the reviews I read about it.I like the size of the book and the fact that it is hardbound. There are pictures for some of the recipes, but not all.I would like to see more pictures for every recipe. The intro to the book is really good because it talks about what kinds of foods should be in a lunch and how to pack the lunch to maintain food safety etc. There is a lot of useful information there.Plus, there are little tips throughout the book. The reason why I gave it 3 stars is because it does have a lot of recipes with chicken, mayo and tortillas. It would have been nice to see more variety. Like the title of the book, not all of these recipes are for a lunch box.In addition to chicken there is a lot of tuna.Once I swap out the tuna for chicken, this will be a chicken cookbook. This book is not what I thought it would be, but maybe once I start making some of the recipes I will like it better?I will most likely keep the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth the money
I figured if I got one more thing to pack in my picky 7 year old's lunch box, this would be worth it. We achieved that goal and he is interested in trying a few other things.Good pictures.Worth it. ... Read more
