Product Description
Sandwich structures represent a special form of a laminated composite material or structural elements, where a relatively thick, lightweight and compliant core material separates thin stiff and strong face sheets. The faces are usually made of laminated polymeric based composite materials, and typically, the core can be a honeycomb type material, a polymeric foam or balsa wood. The faces and the core are joined by adhesive bonding, which ensures the load transfer between the sandwich constituent parts. The result is a special laminate with very high bending stiffness and strength to weight ratios. Sandwich structures are being used successfully for a variety of applications such as spacecraft, aircraft, train and car structures, wind turbine blades, boat/ship superstructures, boat/ship hulls and many others. The overall objective of the 7th International Conference on Sandwich Structures (ICSS-7) is to provide a forum for the presentation and discussion of the latest research and technology on all aspects of sandwich structures and materials, spanning the entire spectrum of research to applications in all the fields listed above. ... Product Description

Mangia is known throughout the New York area for its uncommonly fresh, tasty, and imaginative food. Its innovative menu of market-fresh salads, overflowing sandwiches, warming soups, hearty entrees, and home-baked treats has kept happy New Yorkers coming back for more, day after day.

With this book, Mangia's delicious yet surprisingly simple specialties can at last be made at home. Based on the traditional eating styles of the Mediterranean and that area's reverence for simplicity these recipes epitomize the best of casual eating: a satisfying sandwich of goat cheese, grilled radicchio, and roasted red peppers; a comforting cup of scallop and tomato bisque; or a warm-from-the-oven slice of chocolate bread for breakfast. All two hundred recipes in the book are simple to prepare and adapted for the home kitchen, making them perfect choices for a family supper, an effortless dinner party, or an indulgent Sunday brunch. So whether you are looking for party platters, a make-ahead room-temperature dinner, or inspiration for your picnic hamper, Mangia can elevate your everyday cooking and special entertaining to its highest level.

Manhattan's Mangia restaurant provides busy yet discerning diners withdelicious daytime food. The Mangia Cookbook offers readers more than 200recipes for freshly made fare--sandwiches, unusual salads, heartysoups, and home-baked treats paramount among them. The dishes, which areeasy to make and fit into a range of menu slots, work equally well withfamily or guests. Readers searching for a collection of relaxed yet stylishdishes drawn from diverse ethnic sources--what might be termed Americanlight fare--should welcome the book.

Beginning with "The Bakery Table," a section devoted to Mangia'smuch-admired breakfast and dessert specialties, the book then provideschapters on soups and entrees in addition to the foods mentioned above.Winners among these include Fresh Corn Soup with Smoked Chicken, ChickenSalad with Hazelnut Sauce on Ciabatta Bread, Grilled Orange-MarinatedSalmon, and Apricot Almond Triangles. Included also is a chapter on sidesand condiments, such as Pickled Vegetable Relish, designed to complementmany of the Mangia dishes but good with a wide range of cooking. Withsuggestions for preparing dishes ahead and other useful tips, the bookshould encourage good simple cooking and superior everyday eating.--Arthur Boehm ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Afavorite cookbook!
"Mangia" was a whim purchase, but now an indispensible tool in my kitchen. I particularly love the soup recipes--black bean, with homemade salsa and white bean and proscuitto are my favorites. The combination of flavors always hit the spot!

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice-looking book, but don't look for any great recipes from
This book is very nice-looking.However, I was disappointed to find that it doesn't contain any of the recipes I've enjoyed at Mangia's over the years.I used to work in Rockefeller Center, an easy walk from the first Mangia's (and even easier to have them deliver). When I changed jobs, I thought I'd died and gone to heaven when I discovered the new Mangia's right across the street. So I have eaten there many, many times -- both takeout and in the upstairs restaurant with friends.I was therefore very disappointed not to find any of the recipes I was seeking, which I have enjoyed so much at Mangia's.I also hate the index; it is a royal pain to have to look at the sandwich chapter (or whatever) rather than being able to skim that heading in the index.

In short, this would undoubtedly be a phenomenal book if you don't have any expectations -- but was a disappointment for someone seeking favoite recipes, and unable to find them.

5-0 out of 5 stars UNIQUE RECIPES - TERRIFIC COOKBOOK!
I could not wait for this cookbook to be published. It has some really super-delicious and unique recipes.Who wants to slave over a hot stove in the middle of summer?Personally, I seldom have time to cook meals that take considerable time to prepare. For this reason, I could not wait to try these salads and was not disappointed; the chicken salad with hazelnut sauce is devine. The soups are just as unique and especially tempting for those cool, rainy days when you just want light, warming fare to take away the chill. The breakfast dishes are also intriguing and for those who just want a casual morning breakfast/brunch or for those times when guests arrive for a visit, you are bound to find something special that would please almost anyone in this fabulous cookbook. There are all sorts of wonderful goodies here, and I cannot wait to try the pickled relish; it looks so yummy. The book is well laid out and organized in a manner that makes everything easy to find - also a plus. ... Product Description
Hey, Friend–

Do you know what it’s like give to 100 percent and still feel like it’s not–and you’re not–enough for anybody? To be caught between caring for an aging parent and raising young children? I lived in that place for four years.

Ivy Schneider lives in this place, too, and she isn’t at all happy about it. Her husband Rusty spends ten months a year on the road singing in a gospel quartet, and her mom gets sicker every day, requiring increasingly more care and time. Ivy’s dad took off years ago but still comes around–for free meals. Her brother and sister are more than happy to let responsibility rest on Ivy’s shoulders. Maybe she could handle it all if only her darling three-year old terror, Trixie, would just “go” on the potty. Who will take care of Ivy while she takes care of the world?

No one, it seems. Then Ivy runs an ad in the paper to find folks like herself: women of the “sandwich generation,” squeezed between the demands of raising young children and caring for an aging parent. Soon she and the other women of Club Sandwich are building uncommonly deep friendships, witnessing the reality that in fact no woman can be everything to everybody, and discovering firsthand that they can do more than they imagined possible with the help of each another and with a strong dose of faith.

If your life is about caring for others, I dedicate this book to you. Welcome to the club. You are most definitely not alone.

Grace,

4-0 out of 5 stars Flawed Characters Make an Interesting Story
Women everywhere are feeling overwhelmed, overworked, and under-appreciated. Many of these women are caught in the sandwich generation. They are caring both for their young children and their aging parents. This book is written for women everywhere but especially for the women of this generation.

Ivy doesn't know if she can give anymore. She's the only responsible child in her family and takes care of her mom, dad, father-in-law, three kids, helps run a business and writes novels. Her husband is in a traveling barbershop quartet and only comes home a few weeks out of the year. Her brother and sister are not willing to take on any added responsibilities when their mom gets sick and they are constantly guilting Ivy into being the family savior. As Ivy reaches her breaking point she finds that she is not alone and begins finding other women in her situation. As they become friends she realizes that it's okay to say no occasionally and that she can't be superwoman all the time.

The beginning of the book is an introduction of Ivy and the strange world she grew up in. It's very brash and not very relatable. I was tempted to stop reading after the first few pages as I didn't think I would like the book. I was glad that I did stick with it in the end. Once we get the opening introductions out of the way the writing gets much better and the book doesn't jump around quite as much as it did in the beginning. Ivy is very whiney throughout the majority of the book and she could be very annoying. She also seemed pretty real even in her whiney state. We all complain in our head at times. I wished she had gotten over her whining as it detracted from the story. Also, the book didn't really develop the club sandwich women very much which is surprising since the book's title is based around that group. They were a minor part of the storyline and I think it would have made the book much better if they had been a greater part of the story.

Despite these minor flaws I really got pulled into the book and found myself caring for the characters. I wanted everything to work out for Ivy and her family and wanted to know the outcome of each story lines. It's a good book for anyone who feels stretched by their families.

5-0 out of 5 stars enjoyable book

This book is the best and funniest christian book that I've read in

humor besides. I would recommend this to all women young and older.

Unusal recipes that will satisfy the finicky child or your hard to please dinner guest. There are variety of sandwiches to choose from; egg, butter, mushroom, sausage, pork, beef, and danish to name a few. There is even a sandwich for those of you with a sweet tooth. Following is a recipe for Banana-Walnut Bread.

"Make social occasion sandwiches of thin slices of this delicious bread, spread with butter or cream cheese, with honey butter or - marvelous surprise - lime marmalade".

2 1/2 cups sifted flour
3 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup soft butter
1 egg, beaten
1 cup mashed ripe bananas
2 tbs grated orange rind
1/2 cup milk
1 cup chopped walnuts

Sift flour with baking powder and salt. In a bowl, beat sugar, butter, and egg together until smooth. Add bananas, orange rind, milk; mix well. Add flour mixture. Beat until just smooth. Stir in nuts. Bake in greased loaf pan, in 350 degree oven, about 1 hour, or until cake tester inserted in center of loaf comes out clean. Cool 10 min. in pan. Remove to rack and cool completely before serving. Cuts better if you restrain your impatience until the following day; when cooled, wrap in foil to keep the loaf fresh. ... Read more

Product Description
This charming story presents a new way for young children to understand how to creatively embrace who they are, no matter what others think. Carla’s lunch box is filled with odd delights like the Olive, Pickle and Green Bean Sandwich, the Banana-Cottage-Cheese Delight, and the unforgettable Chopped Liver, Potato Chips, and Cucumber Combo. To Carla, they are delicious and creative lunches, but her teasing classmates are unconvinced and abandon her at the lunch table to eat her bizarre sandwiches alone. One day, however, tables turn when Buster—the worst tease of all—forgets his lunch on the day of the picnic and Carla thoughtfully offers him her extra sandwich. Her own spirited nature helps Carla teach her classmates that "unusual" can actually be good. Lively illustrations help showcase the book's messages of acceptance, tolerance, individuality, and creativity, and the funny plot and authentic dialogue are sure to make this tale a favorite among elementary school children.Carla's creative sandwich solutions provide young chefs-to-be with the inspiration to create sandwich masterpieces of their own. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Celebrate the joys of being different!A delicious reading adventure!
Here I go again: reviewing a book by one of my favorite kids publishers, FLASHLIGHT PRESS.Carla's Sandwich is the fourth one I've read and reviewed, and it's as delightful as their other choices. You can't go wrong with any of their books.

Author Debbie Herman certainly had a great idea when she created the irrepressible Carla, a little girl with a unique talent for creating delectable, mouth-watering, healthy sandwiches. Captivating illustrations by Sheila Bailey complement the story to perfection, and will enchant adults and children alike.

Carla's sandwiches are creative and unique, to be sure, but "weird" to her classmates. They're creatures of habit--stuck in a rut with their usual hot dogs, peanut-butter-and-jelly and bologna sandwiches--so they ridicule her for being different.

But that doesn't stop Carla, and she soon has them "eating out of her hand" ... literally. How does she accomplish this? And what happens when her worst adversary--a boy, naturally--forgets his lunch one day?Does Carla share with him, or ignore him?How does this girl who dares to be different change her entire school?Well, you'll have to RFY (read for yourself); it will be a delicious reading adventure as you and your kids nibble your way through, page after tasty page.

This book--with its subtle message about the joys of being different--is a great choice for kids from 4 to 8 and will make a delightful addition to any picture-book collection. It will also be an excellent tool for teaching children to think for themselves and to be kind and sensitive to others.

I highly recommend this book, but it's lunchtime, so I'm off to create a yummy sandwich of my own design.Does sliced bananas with mustard and lettuce on rye bread sound good?Help, Carla!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great moral
Carla has a great imagination. She enjoys creating unique sandwiches for her school lunches. When trouble rises and her lunches turn into a source of teasing, Carla keeps her chin up and continues to eat her fascinating sandwiches all the while maintaining her kindness to her friends.Coupled with adorable illustrations, this is a wonderful story for all children to enjoy.Even adults will identify with Carla."Carla's Sandwich" shows children how they do not need to be like others by showing the heroine being strong as an individual. With so many food allergies, people with different incomes, and others who eat with religious or ethical restrictions, "Carla's Sandwich" is a winner!

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspires Originality
Carla smiled and handed Buster a Combo Deluxe.
Buster examined the lettuce, tomato, raisin, bean sprout,
pretzel and mayonnaise sandwich carefully.
He looked at Leslie, then Natie, then Carla.
And then he took a very small bite.

Carla loves to invent unique sandwiches and so she creates the Olive-Pickle-and-Green Bean Sandwich. When the other children tease Carla, she offers Buster one of her extra sandwiches. He takes one bit and loves the taste. As the teasers turn into tasters, Carla's classmates start to make their own original sandwiches.

The humorous part of the story occurs at the end of the book when Carla surprises everyone by bringing a very different (than her normal sandwiches) sandwich to school. I do have to wonder if she has tried soy butter or chocolate soy butter.

5-0 out of 5 stars A delightful read
Carla's Sandwich is a great book that children will surely love!

With its imaginative text by Debbie Herman, and its vivid and bright illustrations by Sheila Bailey, no child will be disappointed as they turn each page to discover which weird and wonderful concoctions Carla will be eating that day for her school lunch.

This book contains a story of being different - and you feel a little sorry for Carla as the other children isolate her because she brings in such unusual combinations of sandwiches to eat, like sardine and mustard with sunflower seeds. But one day, another boy forgets his lunch, and when his hunger gets the better of him, he reluctantly turns to Carla to beg a spare from her.

He does, of course, find the offering delicious, and the other children change their minds about constitutes an `acceptable' sandwich.

Fantastic, colourful and detailed pictures, with an inspiring storyline for children aged four to eight years old, this book was a delight to read and is thoroughly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommendedfor young readers ages 4 to 8
Imaginatively written by Debbie Herman and nicely illustrated by Sheila Bailey for young readers ages 4 to 8, Carla's Sandwich has a subtle message about the joy of being different woven into an original story of a little girl who brings weird sandwiches to her school and how her classmates respond to her oddly original sandwiches. After considerable ridicule Carla is able to turn her teasers into tasters and then everyone is into creative sandwich making too! Carla's Sandwich would make a popular and "kid friendly" addition to any school or community library picture book collection!

5-0 out of 5 stars Yesterday's sandwich - fresh take on an old techinque
This is not a conventional photo-book, both in the sense of its content and its physical appearance. The book consists of 55 full-bleed, unbound plates, printed on a relatively thick board. Plates are stacked together in the gray cardboard folder and accompanied by a relatively short but fascinating pamphlet by the author, printed on a separate piece of paper.

Boris Mikhailov creates his unusual and striking surrealistic prints by making transparency "sandwiches" of multiple 35mm color slides. Of course, this technique of creating composites has been used before, but recently almost forgotten with the advance of digital darkroom techniques. However, obvious limitations of the simple slide sandwich technique appear to be its strength, in the hands of the master. Paradoxically enough, almost infinite possibilities of image compositing with Photoshop lead to flood of works of limited integrity and limited imagination. But, the fact that in this case artist's only tool was shooting slides on film and subsequent selection and pairing of slides in a sandwich, led to some amazing images, which in the true surrealistic spirit appear to be spontaneous discoveries rather than premeditated constructs.

You may be disappointed at first by how unassuming and humble this book looks and feels. Color plates are matte and have this yellowish cast reminiscent of old color transparency films. But, this look is true to the spirit and content of this work. Although this is definitely not a documentary work, images bring the visual flavor and color of life in a past era in USSR, behind the Iron Curtain (1960-1970). To be an avant-garde artist in these times and circumstances required huge sacrifices and the love for art easily assumed the drama of epic proportions, as described in the accompanying pamphlet in the story of artist's friend who literally died from his passion for photography.

This idiosyncratic and highly original piece of photographic work may not impress each and everyone. But its artistic integrity, humbleness and honesty make it comfortably deserve the highest mark. Unusually fresh "yesterday's sandwich" indeed.

Product Description

In 1852 Hannah Rebecca Crowell married sea captain William Burgess and set sail. Within three years, Rebecca Burgess had crossed the equator eleven times and learned to navigate a vessel. In 1856, 22-year-old Rebecca saved the ship Challenger as her husband lay dying from dysentery. The widow returned to her family's home in Sandwich, Massachusetts, where she refused all marriage proposals and died wealthy in 1917.

This is the way Burgess recorded her story in her prodigious journals and registers, which she donated to the local historical society upon her death, but there is no other evidence that this dramatic event occurred exactly this way. In The Captain’s Widow of Sandwich, Megan Taylor Shockley examines how Burgess constructed her own legend and how the town of Sandwich embraced that history as its own. Through careful analysis of myriad primary sources, Shockley also addresses how Burgess dealt with the conflicting gender roles of her life, reconciling her traditionally masculine adventures at sea and her independent lifestyle with the accepted ideals of the period’s “Victorian woman.”

5-0 out of 5 stars Great read and a different perspective on maritime history
This a well-written and engaging study of Hannah Rebecca Burgess, a rare example of a maritime heroine (as opposed to hero) who took command of her husband's ship after he died on a long voyage and sailed it thousands of miles back to port. It is NOT a conventional biography, but rather a study of Burgess in the context of both the maritime history of New England and the history of women in 19th-century America. Shockley focuses on how Burgess crafted her own myth through the presentation of her story in her journal, thereby helping to dispel the notion that 19th-century women had little agency over their own lives. Despite tackling gender and other complex issues, The Captain's Widow is free of jargon and full of fascinating details. Well worth a read.

I had high expectations but this book was a disappointment.
Save your money! Every sentence has, "In Rebecca's journal"...over and over again!! There was no need to include that in every sentence! We've already established that this book in fact is about Rebecca's journal. The author also makes assumptions about what the journal writer meant in every sentence. It is a torturous read!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent accompaniment to the PBS program
I really loved the PBS special, Sandwiches That You Will Like, produced by WQED in Pittsburgh.I was impressed with the number of different sandwiches that were featured and the quality of the interviews.Several of my favorites (St. Louis' "Saint Paul" sandwich, the Italian Beef sandwich from Mr. Beef's in Chicago and many others) were highlighted in this show.I liked watching the DVD so much I decided to buy this book, partly in order to replicate some of the recipes but also as a guide for which restaurants served what local specialty as I travel often.

As a supplement to the documentary, this book is excellent. It lists all of the sandwiches featured on the show plus some; it gives their history, offers a recipe for it and tells you where you can find one. However, as a stand alone cookbook it was just so-so.The lack of photos of the sandwiches, restaurants and the people involved took away from the charm of the project. The twelve pages dedicated to listing the entire shooting and travel schedule of the PBS program seemed unnecessary.Still, I am glad that I bought it and I whole-heartedly recommend it to anyone who has seen the special. If you haven't seen the video (and if you love sandwiches, you should) I think that there are better books out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars What can be easier than a sandwich for a meal?
I was on bed rest with my 3rd child when I watched this show on PBS about 3 times! Boy oh boy do I wish I had this book then! Every sandwich has a wonderful story about it, the actual address of the place you can get the sandwich AND the step by step recipe for it!
I have made several of the sandwiches in this book and they never fail. What a great way to feed a large family for not much money! I have a family of 6 and I can make most of these for less than $15! I can also have the ingredients for several types of sandwiches and make what each person would like... with out much hassle! What can be easier than a sandwich for a meal?
There is a sandwich for every taste in this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great collection of recipes and Americana
This book is a unique concept well executed. It should be of interest to both sandwich lovers and those with hunger to learn more about American culture.(Sorry, that was an awful pun.)The recipes seek to replicate some of the finest regional cooking in the States based on the methods of the local masters. It includes plenty of information about the history and cultural significance of each sandwich that make this much more than a cook book.Check out the DVD documentary of the same name. ...
