Product Description
The Saskatchewan cultural and historical mosaic is reflected in homes, workplaces, schools, universities and religious buildings.

Produced in cooperation with The Saskatchewan Architectural Heritage Society (SAHS), Building Our Future is an historical account that researches not just monuments, but also the history of individuals to provide a unique glimpse into the tightly-woven fabric of prairie society, not just the bricks and mortar of the buildings. It accurately reflects Saskatchewan's unique growth over 100 years in confederation, providing snapshots of history in rural and urban environments, in business, faith and farming. Building Our Future is the perfect 100th anniversary present for the province of Saskatchewan.

The SAHS, a nonprofit organization, is dedicated to promotion, protection and preservation of Saskatchewan's built heritage. The five affiliated societies in North Battleford, Moose Jaw, Regina, Saskatoon and Yorkton assisted with the technical research on the buildings nominated by individuals and communities. ... Product Description

The Keynesian economist Mabel Timlin, the first woman to be elected President of the Canadian Political Science Association, and first woman to be elected to Section II of the Royal Society of Canada, went from secretary to student to Professor during her years at the University of Saskatchewan (1921 to 1959). In "No Ordinary Academics" Shirley Spafford describes the circumstances and people that turned a department in an isolated prairie university into a thriving intellectual community that would nurture some of Canada's best minds.

Politics, Economics, Economic History, and other fundamental determinants of Canadian life arose from the research of liberal thinkers such as Timlin, Frank Underhill, MacGregor Dawson, and Norman Ward, who saw the necessity of the government's role in economic development.

These were academics who knew how not to be dull - and this institutional biography is the same. As Spafford narrates the academics' daily lives, their struggles to gain recognition, the transfer of power from the president's office to the peer group of faculty members, and the cross-pollination of ideas with the University of Toronto, the drama of an intellectual community of the University of Saskatchewan is brought forth with an inspired originality, engendered, by the excitement of the place itself. ... Product Description
The stories in Coming Home are as surprising as the landscape of Saskatchewan itself and as varied as its weather. Through the author's reminiscences, we experience prairie life as it was more than sixty years ago, and as it is today. A rich cast of characters appears - neighbours, drunks, misfits - all with a place in the story. These are the tales of a father who lived hard, failed often, and was loved much, of a mother who was an artist at heart but became a teacher and farmer's wife through circumstance. We visit a prairie dance hall with a floor that rests on horsehair, encounter death, baptize a child, participate in a nude massage. We view sex from a farm boy's perspective, learn of home brew and cabbage rolls, eat breakfast with friends, and meet the author's favourite waitress. A sense of awe and wonder emerges through encounters with the land and the unfolding of the changing seasons. ... Read more

Product Description
This book of historical geography provides the first detailed examination of the initiation, development and decline of the unique cultural landscape created by the Community Doukhobors in Saskatchewan between 18l99 and 1918. The book considers the factors influencing the location of the original village sites, and describes the form and pattern of the villages and fields; traces inter-village, inter-reserve, and inter-provincial movement and village consolidation as it became clear that direct conflict with the government was unavoidable; and identifies and analyzes the values which prevented some compromise between the Doukhobors and the government which would have eased this conflict. Illustrated. ... Read more

Product Description

To describe the spirit of a place is an elusive matter.Dennis Gruending believes that the essence of Saskatchewan can be retrieved from its library shelves, if one is patient and digs deeply enough.Readers will be delighted to know he has done the heavy spadework for us, and uncovered a rich selection of writing from more than fifty sources that reflects the province's people and varied history over more than three centuries.

Collected here, as recorded by those who have lived in the landscape and by observant visitors who have passed through it, are the vivid recollections of aboriginal people, excerpts from fur-trade diaries, accounts of Mounties, explorers, and settlers, stories of protest politics, booze, dust, the Depression, war, and the environment.Included are fascinating chronicles of the land before European settlement, eyewitness accounts of major events in Saskatchewan's history, poignant tales of homesteaders and refugees, ruminations on the joys of rural life and portraits of the province's cities, humourous stories about some of Saskatchewan's favourite pastimes, including baseball, football, curling, and hockey, and - of course - stories from the often raucous political life of the province.

With brief, evocative selections, The Middle of Nowhere captures the heart and soul, the people and places of Saskatchewan, revealing a province rich in history, with a diverse and multi-ethnic society, and many attractions for both the curious explorer and the devoted resident.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent read!!
As an Eastern Canadian, I knew very little about Saskatchewan's rich history. I thought Sakatchewan was limited to wheat and football. After reading this book, I anticipate travelling to this underrated province in order to discover its historic jewels firsthand. This book was very well-written.It touches upon the subtle flavours and treasures that form Saskatchewan's unique character.Meika Lalonde shows an extraordinary ability to present historical facts and stories with relevance and dynamism; no stagnant images of dusty relics here. This book now sits on my shelf alongside Crime and Punishment and Great Expectations. ...
