Product Description
This volume makes an important contribution to the growing literature on the transition from school to work. It provides a unique perspective on the global changes that have transformed school-to-work transitions since the 1970s; offers an integrative conceptual framework for analysis; and promotes a comparative, cross-national understanding of school-to-work transitions in a changing social context. The articles assembled in this volume compare and assess variations in school-to-work transitions across Europe and North America, providing empirical evidence on how young people negotiate the different options and opportunities available and assessing the costs and returns associated with different transition strategies. Unlike many other volumes on this subject - which are pitched at either the macro or micro level - this volume attempts to integrate both perspectives, capturing the complexity of this critical life course transition. Furthermore, the authors address policies aimed at improving the capacity of individuals to make effective transitions and at enabling societies to better coordinate educational and occupational institutions. ... This volume, the result of a Brookings conference on employer participation in education, focuses on such questions as: What must educators do to work effectively with employers to develop high quality on-the-job educational experiences? And what policies can encourage participation and monitor and improve the education that takes place on the job? How can an adequate number of employers be recruited? 4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent overview
Too many teenagers are graduating today without the business skills that they need to succeed in today's workplace. This is a growing problem for employers who are finding it difficult to find qualified employees for demanding positions. One solution, says Lynn Olsen, a senior editor at Education Week magazine, are School-to-Work programs that offer both a solid academic foundation and on-the-job training.A School-to-Work program starts when businesses become involved in local high-school education at the community level.

Some examples of School-to-Work programs currently in practice around the country include the following:
· Cooperative learning:the student has a part-time job as a component of vocational education.
· Job shadowing and internships:Students visit work sites and follow professionals during the course of their daily routines.Internships provide valuable real-world experience.
· Technical preparation:The last two years of high-school is combined with a community college program earning a technical degree.
· Career academies:Schools within schools that focus on a particular industry, such as health care or finance. These programs may involve job shadowing or internships.
· Career majors:Students are encouraged to explore various careers and then organize their courses around the area that interests them most.
· School-based enterprises and service learning projects:Students identify needs in the community and organize projects to address those needs.

As a businessperson you can play a role by opening your doors to teachers and students for work-based learning experiences.Encourage and facilitate your staff to become involved.Talk with students, educators and parents about the skills and knowledge needed in the workplace. The benefits to business from involvement in these programs include the following:
· Recruitment
· Fulfillment of labor demand during shortages
· Ability to influence education and ensure that high-school graduates in your area have the skills necessary to enter the workforce.
· Ability to teach work ethics
· Forum for companies to give back to their communities

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent summary of current school-to-work initiatives
Funny how the workforce-preparation issue hasn't caught fire in the UnitedStates as it has in so many other industrialized nations. Certainly ournation's prosperity in the years ahead is dependent on the degree to whichwe educate ourselves to take on the challenges of participating in aglobalized economy. As Hedrick Smith's Rethinking America (1995) and nowLynn Olson's The School-to-Work Revolution shows, other countries know thisalready. Yet we in the United States seem to be asleep at the wheel when itcomes to education.

We're not talking about getting into a"good" college here, or about trends in standardized test scoresamong K-12 students. This is about a silo effect that's developed in mostof our communities: educators have their agenda, and business and industryhave theirs. But rarely does anyone bother to compare the two. That's toobad, because there is plenty of evidence that such willful ignorance of theother guy's concerns is going to have calamitous effects on our economicprospects and our social welfare in the years ahead.

Lynn Olson's purposein writing The School to Work Revolution is to point a way out of thesilos. Reporting on pilot projects in the United States and moreestablished programs in Germany and Japan, Olson shows how school-to-workinitiatives are facilitating educator/employer alliances that benefitstudents and their schools, and businesses and theircommunities.

Establishing school-to-work programs takes effort --lotsof curriculum and facilities planning, some serious financial commitments, and a perseverance that may be the scarcest resource of all. But theresults can be astonishing, lifting a bored student in an aimlesscurriculum out of a dead-end career path and motivating him or her tolevels of effort and achievement that amaze parents and teachers alike.Olson's book is full of such success stories.

Despite these happyresults, school administrators don't always jump at the chance to implementschool-to-work programs. For one thing, many discount the idea asold-fashioned vocational education dressed up with a new label. As Olsonmakes clear, this is a misconception. School-to-work is a bridge betweenwhat the student learns in the classroom and what the student will need toknow in the workplace. (Haven't you ever heard yourself ask, "What arethey teaching these kids anyway?" Well, there you have it!).

Practically speaking, school-to-work programs are also extremelylabor-intensive in terms of staffing. They require lots of contact hoursbetween students and teachers and often between employers and teachers aswell. Moreover, school-to-work is also an idiosyncratic business. In mostprograms students are encouraged to develop their educational plans on thebasis of heartfelt career interests, instead of quickly checking off a menuitem on a guidance department form -- not necessarily an attractiveproposition for an already overworked high-school staff.

But I think itcomes down to this: We can come up with the resources to get this done nowor pay a lot more later on. With my car, I've finally learned to fork outthe money before things get out of hand. In the case of workforcepreparation, Olson shows, the time to pay up is now. It will make for amuch smoother ride later on. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars More school and work enviroment interaction needed
This book is a good example of recent national case studies for understanding school to work transition in developed countries and some developing nations. Many of the case studies that are succesful share similarities in the way students in technical schools have close relationwith the work practices and the skills that future workers will need in thework place. However, the rapid technological change in the work place isputting more pressure in the school curriculum and not always theadaptation of school performance to the needs of new industrial trends isthe best answer for getting a job for future workers and employees. Thewide number of national experiences that have been gathering in this bookedited by Daniel Wagner and David Stern are a very useful overview forunderstanding recent government policies for linking more school and workenvironments. All experts and policy makers that presented their papers inthe OECD Center for Education and Research in Paris during a especialseminar are in this book. Most of the authors took into account the Historyand pattern of development of each country as important issues to have inmind when analyzing school to work transition in an internationalperspective as it is discussed in this collective book. ... Product Description
As anxieties about America's economic competitiveness mounted in the 1980s, so too did concerns that the nation's schools were not adequately preparing young people for the modern workplace. Spurred by widespread joblessness and job instability among young adults, the federal government launched ambitious educational reforms in the 1990s to promote career development activities for students. In recent years, however, the federal government has shifted its focus to test-based reforms like No Child Left Behind that emphasize purely academic subjects. At this critical juncture in education reform, Improving School-To-Work Transitions, edited by David Neumark, weighs the successes and failures of the '90s-era school-to-work initiatives, and assesses how high schools, colleges, and government can help youths make a smoother transition into stable, well-paying employment.

Drawing on evidence from national longitudinal studies, surveys, interviews, and case studies, the contributors to Improving School-To-Work Transitions offer thought-provoking perspectives on a variety of aspects of the school-to-work problem. Deborah Reed, Christopher Jepsen, and Laura Hill emphasize the importance of focusing school-to-work programs on the diverse needs of different demographic groups, particularly immigrants, who represent a growing proportion of the youth population. David Neumark and Donna Rothstein investigate the impact of school-to-work programs on the "forgotten half," students at the greatest risk of not attending college. Using data from the 1997 National Longitudinal Study of Youth, they find that participation by these students in programs like job shadowing, mentoring, and summer internships raise employment and college attendance rates among men and earnings among women. In a study of nine high schools with National Academy Foundation career academies, Terry Orr and her fellow researchers find that career academy participants are more engaged in school and are more likely to attend a four-year college than their peers. Nan Maxwell studies the skills demanded in entry-level jobs and finds that many supposedly "low-skilled" jobs actually demand extensive skills in reading, writing, and math, as well as the "new basic skills" of communication and problem-solving. Maxwell recommends that school districts collaborate with researchers to identify which skills are most in demand in their local labor markets.

At a time when test-based educational reforms are making career development programs increasingly vulnerable, it is worth examining the possibilities and challenges of integrating career-related learning into the school environment. Written for educators, policymakers, researchers, and anyone concerned about how schools are shaping the economic opportunities of young people, Improving School-To-Work Transitions provides an authoritative guide to a crucial issue in education reform. ...
