Product Description
"Designed primarily for teachers and school psychologists, this text reviews the literature on behavioral processes used in school-specific techniques like contracting, self-management, and token economies. Much of the material applies to mainstream classrooms and activities, but there are also chapters dealing with hyperactivity, aggression, withdrawal, depression, and suicide. Studies of such specimen populations as autistic, delinquent, or retarded children are also cited. The authors' stated intent is to provide a balanced mix of theory and methods, so that skills can be developed with confidence in the underlying knowledge base. The heavy emphasis on research, however, makes it a valuable guide to the theoretical study of behavioral science." Readings: A Journal of Mental Health Reviews, Commentary ... Read more

Product Description
Educators, politicians, parents, and even students are consumed with speaking the language of academic achievement. Yet something is missing in the current focus on accountability, standardized testing, and adequate yearly progress. If schools continue to focus the conversation on rigor and accountability and ignore more human elements of education, many students may miss out on opportunities to discover the richness of individual exploration that schools can foster.

In The Best Schools, Armstrong urges educators to leave narrow definitions of learning behind and return to the great thinkers of the past 100 years—Montessori, Piaget, Freud, Steiner, Erikson, Dewey, Elkind, Gardner—and to the language of human development and the whole child.

The Best Schools highlights examples of educational programs that are honoring students’ differences, using developmentally appropriate practices, and promoting a humane approach to education that includes the following elements:
*An emphasis on play for early childhood learning.
*Theme- and project-based learning for elementary school students.
8Active learning that recognizes the social, emotional, and cognitive needs of adolescents in middle schools.
*Mentoring, apprenticeships, and cooperative education for high school students.

Educators in "the best schools" recognize the differences in the physical, emotional, cognitive, and spiritual worlds of students of different ages. This book will help educators reflect on how to help each student reach his or her true potential, how to inspire each child and adolescent to discover an inner passion to learn, and how to honor the unique journey of each individual through life. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Every teacher should take this in mind!
Dr. Armstrong explains in an amazing way the problems we could find on education today, at all levels, and the best is, that he also gives us Examples of Developmentally Appropiate Practice, according to the characteristics of every development stage. I totally recommend it for teachers and parents.

4-0 out of 5 stars Tells What's Wrong With The Schools... Again
This book introduces another educational philosophy, Human Development Research and urges educators to invent a new discourse surrounding the philosophy.I don't disagree with the author's beliefs, but I have trouble with how infatuated education is with "discourse" of any kind. All school reforms have seemed to be child centered at first and I'm not sure they work out that way.The standards movement was actually child centered when it began too.The author makes good points and this book can be very valuable if it stops this NCLB "achievement" oriented reforms.I just fear how it will apply in the future if people jump on board. We always end up with standardized tests and rote learning in the end. ... This book is about the creation and 14-year evolution of a public alternative inner-city high school: New Haven, Connecticut's High School in the Community (HSC).This school lived an idea--empowerment. Students were encouraged to participate in shaping many aspects of their education, teachers were responsible for running the school, and parents invited to help govern. The empowerment ideology pervaded the curriculum, the organizational structures and processes of the school, the relationships among students, teachers, and parents, and, indeed, the relationship between the author and the school. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
I have purchased other books from the "Essential" series and this one is by far the best.It provides information about the history of school neuropsych, as well as information about assessing each area of functioning. There is a nice "sample" report as well and helpul tips throughout. I have already incorporated some of the ideas from the book into my reports. I highly recommend this book. The only negative is that the author lists different types of tests for each area of assessment, but does not interject his opinion in terms of which tests he thinks provides the best information in that particular area.In any event, I would definitely recommend this book to anyone that evaluates children for learning issues, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ap[priasing Fagan & Wise: 'School Psychology ~ Past, Present & Future
Expectations for an entry-level school psychology text are high. Not only must it provide a realistic and unbiased overview of the field and its history, but it also should be written in an accessible manner that does not assume prior coursework in the field. It must not be limited to one interpretation or theoretical construct for the profession. Further, the text must be engaging and avoid overwhelming readers with an unwarranted level of sophisticated detail.

School Psychology: Past, Present and Future (Fagan & Wise, 2007) undeniably meets these standards. This text--in conjunction with other books, articles, and resources--should seriously be considered by instructors of any introductory school psychology course as a means for introducing students to the field and developing a solid foundation from which to further develop skills in more advanced coursework.

A prerequisite for establishing and maintaining one's professional identity is understanding where the field of school psychology has been, where it is, and where it may be headed. Fagan & Wise (2007) provide readers with the tools and information necessary to build this understanding and ultimately impact the development of their own professional identity and that of the field as a whole.

Product Description
Although "School Psychology" first became recognized as a specialty in professional psychology by CRSPPP in 1998, this area of psychology can be traced back to the late 19th century, where it can be thought to have developed alongside "Clinical Psychology" due to the types of cases seen in Lightner Witmer's Psychological Clinic that opened in 1896. Over the years, this psychology specialty has become to encompass the science and practice of psychology with regard to a wide range of "learners," including children, youth, and families, as it impacts the schooling or educational process. In this volume, Drs. Flanagan and Miller provide a comprehensive overview of the foundational and functional competencies related to the specialty of school psychology. As the U.S. attempts to reclaim its stature as a leader in education, school psychologists are likely to play a crucial role across multiple tasks and levels. As such, the reader interested in school psychology will find this volume very "educational."

Series in Specialty Competencies in Professional Psychology

Series Editors
Arthur M. Nezu and Christine Maguth Nezu

As the field of psychology continues to grow and new specialty areas emerge and achieve recognition, it has become increasingly important to define the standards of professional specialty practice.

Developed and conceived in response to this need for practical guidelines, this series presents methods, strategies, and techniques for conducting day-to-day practice in any given psychology specialty. The topical volumes address best practices across the functional and foundational competencies that characterize the various psychology specialties, including clinical psychology, cognitive and behavioral psychology, school psychology, geropsychology, forensic psychology, clinical neuropsychology, couples and family psychology, and more. Functional competencies include common practice activities like assessment and intervention, while foundational competencies represent core knowledge areas such as ethical and legal issues, cultural diversity, and professional identification. In addition to describing these competencies, each volume provides a definition, description, and development timeline of a particular specialty, including its essential and characteristic pattern of activities, as well as its distinctive and unique features.

Written by recognized experts in their respective fields, volumes are comprehensive, up-to-date, and accessible. These volumes offer invaluable guidance to not only practicing mental health professionals, but those training for specialty practice as well. ... Read more
