5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book
I stumbled on this in local library.Went straight home and ordered one while I used the library copy for a month.I am a tertiary educated scientist but this really spelt out how to approach science for young children. If you have ever told your enquiring child that "thats just the way it is" orput it down to a divine inspiration - then this is for you. There is no surer way of ruining your child's future enquiring scientific mind than these sorts of pseudo explanations for things that you are uneducated about! And there is plenty that I feel uneducated about despite having the most expensive and classical education that the UK could offer!

So many great moments. One is the author's memory of his father reading to him about dinosaurs and stopping to draw a picture in his mind of how big the stats really are (imagine his head coming into the top floor window of the house except his head is too big to get into the window).Another is that a vast no. of Harvard grads have wrong concept of seasonal climate cause.Fantastic 3D demos of earth/moon/sun experiments. My 4 year old was very taken with Gallileo which I would never have thought of discussing with her until I read this book.

This book single handedly changed the way I deal with questions from young children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and useful
"Teach Your Child Science" is a useful and well written book.

Children are naturally curious about the world. With this book, you will help your child discover and understand aspects of astronomy, biology, chemistry, earth science, physics, and phychology.

And there is much more here than many good, simple experiments. Science is more than an area of interest; a basic understanding of science and the scientific method helps us in all sorts of ways. Shermer helps you get your child on the path to rational thinking.

Shermer, like James Randi and Carl Sagan, is a strong voice against pseudoscience and the occult. He has written a book that is a building block to make your child a clear-thinking adult. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not One of the Better Books on Philosophy of Science
At first perusal, this seems like a straightforward and unpretentious book on philosophy of science, and therefore a good overview of the subject, so I plunged into it with the hope of a good return on my time investment. However, as I read the book, it didn't take me long to discover that, while the book contains its share of useful ideas and information, somehow one can continue reading without the sense of actually learning much.

I eventually diagnosed the problem as being that the book is rambling and disorganized, and the author is unable to clearly spell out his key points. It's as though he knows what he wants to say, but just can't concentrate and focus enough to come out and clearly say it.

These deficiencies are enough that I can't recommend the book.Philosophy of science is inherently a difficult subject, so it's hard to be clear about it without also making things complicated, and one might be tempted to sympathize with the author. But the fact is that there are still a number of books on this topic which are considerably clearer than this one; just do an Amazon search for "philosophy of science" and sort by customer rating to find them.Good luck! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Astronomy Starter Book
If you're starting off with astronomy (learning the basics) this is a great guide. I first discovered this book at my local library, and fell in love with its detailed information about our solar system and the universe.

This brief overview contains constellation charts, tips on buying a good telescope, as well as concise, easy-to-understand information about the sun and her satellite planets, as well as Kuiper Belt dwarf planets, the Oort Cloud and other features of the universe. He also includes a little theory/laws for beginners (including Bode's Law and Kepler's Three Laws of Motion). Historical information about astronomers are also included.

Unfortunately, although this book is the perfect brief guide for beginniners, it does not contain a lot of color photographs. People looking to planetary "eye candy" should turn to a book like "Universe," for color photographs. There are also some persnickety remarks (by this British astronomer) about the American space program. (But all things aside, this still is a great manual.)

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Beginning Book on Astronomy

Patrick Moore outlines basic principles of Astronomy
in this edition of the 'Teach Yourself' series.

Moore, an English astronomer effectively teaches the beginner how to look at the stars.
While astronomy is often associated with complex mathematics,
Moore almost completely avoids the mathematical aspects
of astronomy and simply teaches the reader how to look at the stars,
identify constellations; buy, make and use a telescope.

A great book for the beginner, Moore's bias towards accomplishments of English
Astronomers and a hint of animosity towards American accomplishments
seems to indicate that his target reading audience is of British nationality
and does take a little something away from this otherwise great book.

Understand Marx inside and out

Groundbreaking and far-reaching as they are, the theories and ideas of Karl Marx are often confusing. You will be up to speed on the father of communism's ideas and influence in no time at all.

3-0 out of 5 stars Shabby.
When I picked up the book I was already well versed in Marxism and the opposing views having just read Das Kapital, and majoring in political economy. I picked up this work not so much to "teach myself" but to get some good biographical information that is usually omitted by many who solely focus on the influential thinker's ideals. As a brief bio. the book functions well, as an overview of Marxist econ. and ideology it leaves much to desire.

It moves along at a frantic pace, which is to be expected of a book that is attempting to summarize a massive system of political economy, but it moves so quickly that it leaves many good points of information in the dust. That could be partially excused for the sake of keeping the book short and readable but the work consistently repeats information, nearly verbatim, leading me to believe length wasn't a primary concern.
As for the info that is provided, it's certainly valuable at times. Mainly the description of the philosophers who came before and influenced Marx. You will also get a good insight into the life of Marx as a husband and father, interactions with the workers, and the constant attempts to silent him.

The grammar is awful: "Idealology" and the time line is even worse with it's yo-yoing but, there's some good insights offered and also good recommendations of Marx's work for further study. I would recommend "The Meaning Of Marxism" over this work if you wanted a more detailed description of his work in a more coherent fashion. ... Read more

Product Description
This well-researched book provides a valuable instructional framework for high school biology teachers as they tackle five particularly challenging concepts in their classrooms meiosis, photosynthesis, natural selection, proteins and genes, and environmental systems and human impact. The author counsels educators first to identify students prior conceptions, especially misconceptions, related to the concept being taught, then to select teaching strategies that best dispel the misunderstandings and promote the greatest student learning. The book is not a prescribed set of lessons plans. Rather it presents a framework for lesson planning, shares appropriate approaches for developing student understanding, and provides opportunities to reflect and apply those approaches to the five hard-to-teach topics. More than 300 teacher resources are listed. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent content for elementary level science teaching
This book has been around quite a few years, but the authors have updated each edition for new trends, especially in space exploration, technology, and the constructivist orientation to science teaching. I am using it foran Integrated Physical and Biological science content class for elementaryteachers. I can supplement with web searches for jazzy pictures, or lowinformation density lessons, but for a good all round knowledge reference, with the extra of alternating chapters to emphasize methods of teachingelementary science, I haven't found a better physical/biological sciencetext.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money!
This is one of my textbooks for my classes this year. For $73, one wouldexpect to find color pictures, well written text, and current information, however, this book lacks all of these.Published in 1990, the info is atleast ten years old.I can't believe they charge this much for a book.Itis not Amazon's fault, it is the publisher. ...
