From the supplier: The poor management of fraud prevention programs in corporations is one of the reasons why the problem is still rampant. Many companies have not developed antifraud strategies and have not created a team that will focus on overseeing countermeasures to prevent theft of information, money and even goods. Another factor that hampers the success of fraud prevention is the lack of knowledge of the people involved in the development of countermeasures to determine ways of making fraud difficult to practice.

From the supplier: A study from the Institute of Financial Crime Prevention indicates that about 1/2 to 2% of corporate sales are lost to employee fraud. The proliferation of employee fraud is believed to be connected with the absence of an individual who is tasked with its prevention. Employees are often the best source of information on fraud but they are often too scared to do so. The three factors in committing employee fraud are situational pressure, detection of opportunity to commit and conceal the act and a way to rationalize the crime.

From the supplier: Financial institutions can implement several measures to prevent check frauds. For instance, job applicants' fingerprints should be sent to law enforcement agencies to check out prior felonies. Banks should balance security concerns with the customer service needs of their check cashing policies. Bank tellers should be adequately trained in detecting signs of check fraud. Bank public spaces such as lobbies and check-cashing lines should be monitored by CCTV cameras.

From the supplier: Prompt recognition of the signs of fraud and the formulation of good preventive policies are the key to successfully fighting corporate fraud. Security professionals, however, must ensure that internal controls and procedures that make up proactive policies are properly enforced. These should also be cost-effective and must not interfere with operations. Among these controls are an audit trail, independent checks and balances, segregation of duties, and physical security. Common fraudulent practices, meanwhile, include phony invoicing and shipments to fictitious customers.
