5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive overview of the fabless S/C industry
In this well written book the author, Rakesh Kumar, shares his 35 years of experience in the semiconductor industry. The book presents a comprehensive overview of the fabless semiconductor technology in an easy to read fashion. The book includes an overall picture of the dynamics of the semiconductor industry as well as a detailed, step-by-step discussion of what is involved in launching a new product as a fabless company. It takes the reader through the lifecycle of a fabless company and points out the challenges and pitfalls of developing a new IC. The book covers the various implementation options and technology choices. It emphasizes the importance of dealing with customers and suppliers and sharing a long term roadmap with them. There is also extensive coverage of unit and development cost, quality and other operational issues.
Although the book focuses on starting a successful fabless company, many of the issues discussed apply to IDMs and fab-lite companies as well. The book also includes illuminating testimonials of leaders in the semiconductor industry to illustrate the points the author makes in the book.

I have been using this book in a class I am teaching at the University of Pennsylvania on the "Dynamics of the Semiconductor Industry".The course is part of our Executive Masters of Technology Management program which offers an MSE in Engineering, and is co-sponsored by our Wharton Business School. The comprehensive nature of this book makes it an ideal reading for the class, and provides a context against which to teach. It brings together business and technology considerations in a well explained fashion. The book is a must-read for semiconductor design engineers, non-engineering personnel associated with the industry as well as aspiring entrepreneurs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive silicon primer
Dr. Kumar's "Fabless Semiconductor Implementation" is a well written, up to date reference guide for modern custom silicon. The layout is excellent, and the book reads & flows well. Also, I couldn't find a single area that Dr. Kumar fails to address. The book is applicable for a wide range of people from the "smart but inexperienced in silicon" engineer, to the silicon expert seeking a comprehensive reference manual.Lastly, I believe this book is perfect for executives who have silicon groups under them, but have not grown up through the silicon ranks.Highly recommended fabless silicon primer.

4-0 out of 5 stars NOT "real men have fabs"
Kumar explains much about the problems of starting up and running a fabless company. He addresses a reader who might or should already have an idea about a niche in chip or system design currently unaddressed by the marketplace. He explains the ecosystem of the semiconductor industry, and where fabless companies fit in. By now [2008], there are several fabs throughout the world that can take your design tapeouts and instantiate them in silicon.

The text goes through ways to attract funding. Starting with the proverbial friends and family. Then angel investors. Followed by Series A, B etc. All the way to an IPO or perhaps being bought out by a larger, established chip firm. For an American startup, another source of funding is the US government. Through its Small Business Innovative Research grants. Or by contracts with various other federal agencies or departments. Kumar does warn of one danger. You might get success in attracting contracts. But you need to later avoid a sole dependence on these. Otherwise you will never get big; always remaining essentially a research arm of the government.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
Dr. Kumar's recently released book presents a marvelous compendium of current information gleaned from years of experience and success in the fabless arena.Whether this is your first or your fiftieth fabless company; whether you are an executive managing an existing fabless operation, a technical professional designing the next great semiconductor product, or an entrepreneur compiling a business plan for a new fabless company; the information in this book will prove invaluable to your success.

Comprehensive coverage of memory test problems at chip, array and board level is provided in this book. For each of these test levels a class of fault models is introduced along with tests for these models. The author also presents algorithms of relevant fault models, together with proofs of their correctness. Special attention is given to why a fault model belongs to a particular class and why it is of interest. A software package, suitable for use on IBM PCs and compatibles,is also available which consists of a set of memory test programs and a simulation package demonstrating how the algorithms are executed and the relationship of the algorithm with the memory. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The bibel of memory test
Over 30% of today's designs implements embedded memories and continuously consumes more and more die area. While embedded memory presents significant system performance and cost reduction advantages, it brings its own testing issues. Test vector style tests are not suitable for verifying embedded memory arrays because it is too costly. This is because the time spent in the manufacturing tester grows exponentially as the embedded memory die area increases. Sometimes it is impossible to create a set of vectors that can detect all possible types of memory defect.

Implementing embedded memory built in self-test (BIST) can alleviate these problems. In simplistic terms, memory BIST is an on-chip utility that enables the execution of a proven set of algorithmic style verification tests directly on the memory array. These tests can be executed at the design's full operating frequency to prove the memory array operations and identify errors caused by silicon defects.

Embedded memories are the most dense components within a system-on-chip (SOC), accounting for up to 90% of its real estate.1 Memories also are the most sensitive to process defects, making it essential to thoroughly test them in the SOCs.

Because memories are used as test vehicles for monitoring the silicon process and improving its yield, extracting additional diagnostic data to determine the causes of failures now is required in the testing strategy. In addition to diagnosis, many embedded memories are designed with built-in redundancy, which provides spare rows and columns that can replace failing locations. Redundancy enables the manufacturer to repair a number of otherwise defective devices to ensure maximum production yield.
Characteristics of today's SOC designs include the following:

    1. Typically more than 30 embedded memories on a chip.
    2. Memories scattered around the device rather than concentrated in one location.
    3. Different types and sizes of memories.
    4. Memories doubly embedded inside embedded cores.
    5. Test access to these memories from only a few chip I/O pins.

A deep-submicron test strategy will have to handle all of these memory issues.
These issues are being addressed by the use of built-in self-test (BIST). BIST is the methodology of choice for testing embedded memories within SOCs. It offers a simple and low-cost means to test for failures of embedded memories without significantly impacting device performance.

While it has been used primarily for production pass/fail testing, BIST can be extended to provide the diagnostic data required for process monitoring and repair. Although the area overhead required by the BIST circuitry is increased, designing the diagnostic circuitry into the BIST provides many advantages in terms of time for both setup and test.

This book will take you intensively through all the memory BIST algorithms and ways to test them.I consider this as the bible for mbist testing. ... Read more

    Product Description

The Practical, Start-to-Finish Guide to Modern Digital Design Verification

As digital logic designs grow larger and more complex, functional verification has become the number onebottleneck in the design process. Reducing verification time is crucial to project success, yet many practicing engineers have had little formal training in verification, and little exposure to the newest solutions. Hardware Design Verification systematically presents today's most valuable simulation-based and formal verification techniques, helping test and design engineers choose the best approach for each project, quickly gain confidence in their designs, and move into fabrication far more rapidly. College students will find that coverage of verification principles and common industry practices will help them prepare for jobs as future verification engineers.

Author William K. Lam, one of the world's leading experts in design verification, is a recent winner of the Chairman's Award for Innovation, Sun Microsystems' most prestigious technical achievement award. Drawing on his wide-ranging experience, he introduces the foundational principles of verification, presents traditional techniques that have survived the test of time, and introduces emerging techniques for today's most challenging designs. Throughout, Lam emphasizes practical examples rather than mathematical proofs; wherever advanced math is essential, he explains it clearly and accessibly.

    Coverage includes

    • Simulation-based versus formal verification: advantages, disadvantages, and tradeoffs
    • Coding for verification: functional and timing correctness, syntactical and structure checks, simulation performance, and more
    • Simulator architectures and operations, including event-driven, cycle-based, hybrid, and hardware-based simulators
    • Testbench organization, design, and tools: creating a fast, efficient test environment
    • Test scenarios and assertion: planning, test cases, test generators, commercial and Verilog assertions, and more
    • Ensuring complete coverage, including code, parameters, functions, items, and cross-coverage
    • The verification cycle: failure capture, scope reduction, bug tracking, simulation data dumping, isolation of underlying causes, revision control, regression, release mechanisms, and tape-out criteria
    • An accessible introduction to the mathematics and algorithms of formal verification, from Boolean functions to state-machine equivalence and graph algorithms
    • Decision diagrams, equivalence checking, and symbolic simulation
    • Model checking and symbolic computation

Simply put, Hardware Design Verification will help you improve and accelerate your entire verification process--from planning through tape-out--so you can get to market faster with higher quality designs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and Comprehensive Book
I have read many books on hardware verification covering simulation, emulation, and formal verification. Lam's book is the most comprehensive and the best explained. The book covers simulation, test plans, coverage metrics, and formal verification. It covers the theory and the practical issues. HDL examples of test benches for various kinds of hardware properties and behaviors are provided in the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars good graduate level text
Lam addresses an increasingly troubling problem in semiconductor design. As the transistor count keeps climbing, how to adequately simulate and test a chip?

Well, simulation comes first. The book describes design verification, where by this Lam restricts himself to functional verification. This is itself a large field, as can be appreciated by what the book presents of it. The text gives a good account of key ideas like equivalence checking and property checking. Where the basic idea is to have a redundant check that will hopefully point out any errors.

Then simulations are considered. These take up a large portion of the text. One approach is to build a comprehensive set of input test vectors. Of course, usually the number of possible combinations is too large to test all of these. But Lam points out that often groupings of the input are possible, with you only needing to test a few values from each group.

Another approach is to start from a formal set of specifications. It may be fair to say that both involve different types of complexity.

Lam also helps the reader by furnishing an extended problem set at the end of each chapter. The problems are nontrivial enough to give the reader a good workout. Very suitable as a graduate text, as well as at the professional level.

5-0 out of 5 stars good depth and breadth on both simulation and formal stuff
Finally a book on both simulation and formal verification with good depth. My company uses both tools on a daily basis.

I always wanted to learn about formal verification. Many books I have are too mathematical to follow. This book gives an easy intro. to formal verification and leads to the inner working of algorithms in formal verification. The sections on equivalence checking and symbolic simulation are very enlightening. Now I am more confident working with formal tools, after I know the principles behind them.

The book is great on simulation-based verification. it has a lot of practical advices and its presentation is very well organized. The chapters on coding for verification is especially practical --- I put them into use right away. The testbench chapter gives not only examples but also provides an insightful overview of testbench architecture. I skimmed through the chapter on simulators and caught a couple of good insights on the architectures of various kinds of simulators. I haven't finished the book yet but it is so far so good.

The only problem is that the book is too big, 600 pages! Some of the stuff probably should belong to another book.

In summary, I think every verification and design engineer should read it to get a running start. ... Read more
