An excellent book for both the beginner and professional sewers. The sewing techniques/instructions are clear and concise. Mrs. Crawford included lots of details on sewing machines, required notions, etc. I only wish that the book came in hard cover form, instead of soft cover.. Highly recommend.

It's OK
My problem with this book is that I always need to remember whether the dark color means right side or wrong side. Of course it is obvious in some figures, but definitely not for most of them. Why not draw flowers to illustrate the right sides on the figures?
It is confusing.

No Photos!All Black and White
I recently returned to sewing after years of being away from it.I was looking for some books to look at as a refresher as well as learn some more advanced techniques.I checked out 7 books from the library including this one and this was my least favorite.It's pretty basic, offered nothing that several of the other books didn't but primarily, because there were no photos.All the images were illustrations in gray tones.It seemed more like a text book and intimidating.Not fun and inspiring.The information was good but the lack of photos and color made it intimidating and I didn't want to read it.

Skip this one
This book is called a "classic" but I don't see why. It is a very mediocre book that skims over or altogether skips some very important sewing basics. This book is published by Fairchild, a leading publisher of professional books on fashion. So I was expecting a comprehensive, in-depth textbook on fashion sewing--I was very disappointed! There is absolutely zero info about altering store-bought patterns, so go elsewhere if you are looking for help with pattern fitting. As an example, there are just a few pages on how to hem garments. It shows a picture of a faced hem, but it gives no instructions on how to do one! Yet there are multiple pages on how to do obscure pocket flaps--it makes no sense! A much better choice would be the Reader's Digest sewing book. Even the Simplicity Simply the Best sewing book is better than this! If the book weren't so large and hefty I would send it back, but I don't want to pay the postage. The book has black and white line drawings that are no better than other books. I would only get this if I could find a really cheap copy, because otherwise you are wasting your money.

This book is expensive, inaccurate, and underwhelming.
Claire Shaeffer writes informative books about sewing and fabrics for the home sewer.Claire Shaeffer should have either stayed in the sewing industry or gained real experience in the garment industry before she dare charge $71 for a vacuous outsider's perspective of this so-called "apparel industry".The book has a generic text book tome and the corny needle and thread clip art screams "home sewer".There is nothing wrong with home sewing.I've been sewing since I was 10.Making clothes has been my quiet hobby and a source of unending fascination.The truth is: the garment industry doesn't want to deal with home sewers."Fashion" designers and home sewers both share ignorance and arrogance as annoying, unappealing traits.Anyone can doodle on a napkin, but who can construct it from a sketch, fit it right, and sew it up professionally, within your cost structure?Not a "fashion" designer or a home sewer can do that, yet they think that they are greater than the process for they are completely unaware of the process.The goal is to work well with the fashion and garment industries.If you are looking for this kind of information in this book, you won't find it.

This book is expensive, inaccurate, and underwhelming.The "sewing on paper project" (page 50) is laughable.How will sewing on a piece of paper get me any closer to dealing with "the apparel industry"?Claire Shaeffer's terms are off.Apparel is nebulous - it's either the fashion or garment industry.The fashion industry sells the clothes while the garment industry makes the clothes.It's "block" rather than "sloper".Good blocks are everything, so learn how to make them and alter them yourself - for everything revolves around your blocks!It is your block that you take to garment manufactures from which they sew a sample.They don't need your pretty little sample.It is good to sew your "first sample" for your benefit, for you will know, in general, how to construct it and the number of steps for costing benefit.What are those 101 steps of garment production?You won't find the answer in this book.It is quite a leap going from home sewer to design entrepreneur and those of us taking that leap need accurate and relative information about the ways of the garment industry.Without accurate information, that leap means you'll never know how to contact garment manufactures; you can't define what you want and they don't know what to deliver; your clothes will never fit and you will have committed tons of money on a "dog"; you won't ever know the language of the garmento and you will sound like an a buffoon; you will sew the long, circuitous route rather than the expedient way like the professionals using industrial machines and practices.For those of you looking for information to facilitate crossing the chasm from home sewer to design entrepreneur, you won't find it here.

This is the type of book that should be used in schools for Merchandising OR Fashion Design. I cannot get over it's usefullness. Everything I wanted (and needed) to hear about about clothing manufacture is in this book! Fairchild Pubs could never publish such a USEFUL and INTELLIGENTLY WRITTEN book. Those bastards always make textbooks difficult to understand and fill them with meaningless JABBERWOCKY!! Half the time, they don't even have a decent glossary or INDEX (if there is one at all) whereas Claire it seems, has given us the full tour. Peripheral data you could care less about is not here!! Nothing to waste your time, only a step-by-step layout of what happens when a person or people manufacture clothing for retail purposes. From the design concepts (who and how they're created) to what type of people you would need (including full job descriptions) to what the considerations are for contracting, shipping etc.. There are also tons of other little things including pictures that are laid out in a very intelligible way. The beauty of her writing is that the data is always concious that you may not be a huge entreprenuer, and applies methods for the little guy as well. Just an amazing book. Full of Inspiration
I was looking for a resource book on many kinds of African textiles; their cultural significance, history, countries of origin, and methods of production.This book covered all these areas, and more. Although my primary interest is in creating surface designs on my own fabric and paper for mixed-media art, I was tempted to pull my sewing machine out of retirement and try my hand at some "ethnic" inspired garments or gifts.A great book!

Greatpics, great information
This is a wonderful book for the garment sewer who wants to work with African fabrics. You learn about the characteristics of a variety of African fabrics, how to recognize true mudcloth, fancy prints vs. wax prints etc. and how and where to buy them in and outside Africa. -Plus you learn technical tips on how to sew these fabrics, and the book is full of pictures of clothing that incorporates them. The book has staying power. It even includes patterns in the back.

A unique and excellent introduction to African fabrics

Novice sewer
For a novice sewer, this book is a definate must.This book has helped me identify fabrics, what to use them for and how to care for them.

great reference
This is a great reference for the serious sewer. It is very detailed to each fabric type.From understanding the hand of the fabric your looking for to how to sew the seams, hems, buttons, zippers..etc. This book also a dresses the hard to find fabrics, and puts all fabrics into the exact family classifcation.It also has a very important chapter about sewing with knits, strecth fabric, working with feathers and leather.I would recomand this book to anyone who really wants to know the in and out of working with all types of fabric.

Very Nice but Too Much Redundancy
My only wish is that this book were organized such that the same chucks of information won't be repeated several times here and there. This has more information than "More Fabric Savvy", but "More Fabric Savvy" looks better organized.

Claire Shaeffer's Fabric Guide
I was hoping to order an earlier and shorter version of this, which I had borrowed from my library..but this book has everything you need to know to tackle any kind of fabric for machine sewing.In addition, there is a section which gives techniques and specific stitches which you won't find anywhere else.
Highly recommended for the serious seamstress (or tailor).

Encyclopedic tome
The first thing the struck me about this book is how big it is. It's bout the size of three regular books stacked together and it's heavy! Inside is a veritable encyclopedia of fabric... 525 pages of densely packed information. Despite it's size this isn't a "coffee table" picture book. It's serious stuff.

Claire Shaeffer starts her book with the words: "I know I am obsessed..." and proceeds to prove her point. Bless her, this is an amazing effort! It's well-organized and consistent. Color-marked sections are easily seen from the side of the closed book and there is a comprehensive index. For example, in the Fabric Types section, each general category is introduced with a general description, a bullet box of Fabric Characteristics, and a Sewing Checklist. Then she continues on to Garment planning and Sewing Notes. Under Sewing Notes she breaks out Layout, Cutting and Marking, Stitching Tips, and Pressing. Sidebars with hints and color photos are interspersed throughout. Under the general categories and sub topics with even more detailed information and tips including garment care and so on. In a word, it's very comprehensive and incredibly useful!

I didn't find the clothes in the photos to be distractingly out of fashion. Most are classic styles that you still see. There are a couple that hark back to big hair and shoulder pads but generally speaking she did a remarkable job of picking timeless styles that age well and never really go "out." However, that isn't what this book is about. It's about how to deal with that hateful fabric you just had to buy and then couldn't figure out. Just what I wanted!
"Patterns of Fashion 1..." is exactly what I expected it to be.I love the details in the drawings.I find it much easier to research historical fashions with line drawings than with the paintings, etc. that you see in museums and on web sites.I will have this book in my collection for a long, long time.

wonderful and resourceful
I have a fascination for period clothing and construction with this being one of my favorites. It provides all sorts of info and patterns on the garments for the periods provided. I have built a couple items using her patterns as guides to create my own. I wouldn't recommend it to beginners because it is a little more challenging unless you have some patterning background.

A classic
For the theatrical costumer, I think this is one of the all-time essentials.Not only are pattern sketches included for fashions of the major periods, so are construction details and some good drawings of garment details.However, be warned--this is not for the novice pattern drafter/seamstress.Not interested in making a replica of these fabulous fashions?Just enjoy the drawings and descriptions.

Exceptional
Janet Arnold is the preemminent clothing historian of our day. As with all of her books she has provided a concise reference to the garments of the period in question, listing the fabrics, colors and cuts that are appropriate for the given garments. Also typical of Arnold books is the scale patterns for the given garments in the back of each text, so, with an understanding of pattern drafting one can easily reproduce the garments from the book as well as size the garment for a particular wearer. As with many of Ms. Arnold books she draws examples from extant examples taken from trunks and in some cases the casket. This is great if you're looking for how-to on technique and general info on working with fleece, but not if you want help making fleece clothing.From the description & the images it seemed like it would give you the patterns to make kids clothing, but it doesn't.The directions just reference "use a basic pattern", so you have to go out and find one the right size & style (which isn't always easy) and then use this book to make it "fancier". Great book although
The book is great although when I was searching for it I was looking for a used book cheaper book. They were all listed as brand new and when I received mine, it had notes written in it!! Great easy book for draping with easy explanations just wished I got a used book price since it was really used!!!

Great Pattern Book
I agree, this book takes an experienced seamstress, but the samples and explanations of the gowns can get any type of seamstress through.If not, then the seamstress needs to learn how to sew.Even though the book has "patterns from the era", the patterns are no where near what we have as patterns today.If you want a Simplicity (which describes the type of pattern it is) then do not purchase this book.If you are looking for a book to offer suggestions, give great examples that are period correct, then this is the book to buy.Yes, the patterns back in the Civil War period were produced in a way that a seamstress has to use some math to get it to the correct size needed and therefore are not like our patterns today where you take it out of the envelope and lay it on your material and cut.
Excellent book and great to study.

Not for the beginning seamstress
The patterns in 60 Civil-War Era Fashions are all drawn from Peterson's Magazine, one of the ladies' magazines most familiar to Civil War re-enactors and costumers. The pattern dates range from 1860 to 1869. The patterns have been enlarged somewhat to fit the book pages, and the book says they have been redrawn, but otherwise they are just like the ones in the original magazines. Patterns in 1860s ladies' magazines tend to be only roughly scaled (that is, they are not drawn to true scale and cannot simply be enlarged without re-drafting). These patterns are no exception. Each pattern includes a brief description of the garment, but no sewing instructions. No period supplementary information (such as dressmaking instructions or fashion columns) was added to make up for the lack of it. However, a highly experienced pattern-drafter and seamstress, who has no access to original issues of Peterson's, will be able to make use of this book. ... Read more

Comprehensive - if you could only choose one book on the subject, choose this one
This is a great, comprehensive book on the subject of textile arts.I have several books on the subject and this one definetely covers the widest range of techiques, including wet felting, pin weaving, dyeing, embroidery, applique, etc.Instructions and color photos are clear and easy to follow.The galleries in this book scared me a little but only because the works shown are very "artsy" and rather outdated.The galleries have nothing to do with the instructions, though, which are excellent.

Less than Expected
While this book is great for people with absolutly no textile experiance, it was too basic for me. The pictures may spark your creativity but the techniques are simplistic and can be found by searching free on the net. Unless you are a beginer don't bother.

Buyer beware
Be warned:This book is an amalgamation of 'Colour and Design on Fabric' and 'Fabric Artistry' from the Singer Design series.I didn't discover this until it arrived here in New Zealand by which time it was too late and it wasn't worth the postage to send it all the way back to the US for a refund.

Wonderful creative inspiration!
I'm always looking for books to inspire me to creative something unique whether it is utilizing sewing or painting techniques. This book does both and more. I love the galleries provided in each chapter! Few books have inspired me to make notes of my ideas while I am reading, but this one did. On my first "run thru", I noted 8 different ideas and outfits to make. Now I've got to go get started! Great book!

Garment Fitting Book
I bought this book used through Amazon so I did not pay full price. The book is excellent and worth the full price. There is a ton of good and usable information. I have been sewing for years and I learned a lot of new information in this book. If you are seriously interested in garment fitting, this is the book for you.

Fitting & Pattern Alteration
This book has been used as a textbook. It goes into perhaps more detail about fashion than some home sewers are looking for. I appreciate the ability to see the necessary pattern alteration for just about ANY body irregularity. Example - the book shows the pattern alteration for prominent shoulder blades. It really has pretty much every possible fitting problem. I recommend taking this book out of the library first. If your library doesn't have it, they can probably get it through an Inter-Library Loan. You may not really need to own this book unless you are sewing for quite a few people. You might just want to copy a page or 2. It is a great book for sewers learning fitting.
