Product Description
The much-discussed spread of AIDS has increased awareness of sexually transmitted diseases. But awareness of AIDS is sometimes at the expense of less well-known but increasingly important conditions. This book gives practical information and advice to general readers. The first section answers common questions about sexually transmitted diseases and there are chapters on each of the major conditions including gonorrhea, syphilis, AIDS, hepatitis, chlamydia, herpes and genital warts. There is also a section on minor conditions. The book aims to de-stigmatize sexually transmitted diseases and the author argues that social responsibility is a necessary adjunct to sexual liberation. This is a sequel to the author's "Herpes, Aids and Other Sexually Transmitted Diseases". It is a useful book for all sexually active people. ... Read more

From the supplier: Many Canadians are at risk for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Factors affecting individual STD risk include number of sexual partners, age of the first intercourse, condom availability and use, and availability of STD diagnostic and treatment centers. Research shows the most significant factors reducing STDs are increased condom use and access to treatment facilities.

From the supplier: Genital herpes, as of 1997, can be treated but not cured, and is usually contracted through genital-genital contact. Herpes simplex virus type 1 is usually transmitted through oral-genital contact. Genital herpes is not reported in Canada as a sexually transmitted disease, but clinical reports suggest it is widespread. Transmission risk is affected by lack of condom use. The spread of this disease can be controlled by public education, cost/benefit analysis of therapy, improved screening tests, and planning for the eventual use of a vaccine.

From the supplier: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) can be sexually transmitted and produces significant effects after infection, including cirrhosis of the liver and hepatocellular cancer. Factors affecting the risk of HBV include women and men who have had sexual contact with infected men, years of sexual activity, anal sex, and exposure to other sexually transmitted diseases. HBV infection can be prevented by immunization, consistent condom use, and educational programs identifying high risk behavior.
