Product Description
This book explores the unique Singapore experience: its internal landscape, how the landscape came about, was conceived of and conceptualised, and how the imagination played and continues to play an important role in such conceptions. The collected essays, written by a multidisciplinary group of writers -- historians, economists, geographers, political scientists, psychologists, philosophers, and literary specialists -- cover a wide range of topics relating to Singapore society, including historiography, to resource and recreational planning, bilingualism and population management, religion and politics, and gender. A common thread tying together these essays is the mental construction of reality from which thinking proceeds. This new edition features two new essays ('Imagining Freedom' and 'Imagining the Singapore Economy in the Next Lap'), revisions and updates of the original essays and a new preface. READERSHIP: University lecturers, researchers, academics, practitioners, governmental administrators and those interested in sociology. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Insightful
The essays are very readable, though some can be very academic (like the one on Singapore leaders). One the whole, I found the collection insightful, especially from a Singaporean's perspective.

For instance, Singapore's policy on Bilingualism in the education policy: Having gone through the Singapore education system, it's a weird but pleasant feeling reading it now and going "So that's why I had to study those subjects in school"). It was also a minor relevation of sorts when reading the essays on the Singapore population policy, the planning of recreational facilities (something I wasn't aware until I read the article), and the issue of a National Identity.

I thought it was interesting to have the article on "Religious Truth and the meaning of life" in this collection. Contrary to my expectation, it's not about politics or the workings of the government (as I thought it would, since the collection of essays are somewhat quite academic in nature). But it's really about philosophy, and increasingly as the Singapore society gets more sophisticated, more and more people would start articulating thoughts of such a nature. Now I bet our forefathers thought about the meaning of life too, but just not presented in this way.

This book would appeal to those who want a deeper insight into the workings of Singapore, and what makes Singapore and Singaporeans tick. ... Read more

Product Description
Singapore is the dominant world city of Southeast Asia, the worlds fastest growing region. Singapore is the lynchpin between the global economic system and the regional economy. Providing a review of the citys social, physical and political characteristics, this is a unique insight into the countrys phenomenal development. The preliminary chapters examine the historical development of the city, the sources of economic growth and the political management and planning of economic and urban development. The second section concentrates on key components of the city environment: land patterns and communications, demographic trends, family and community structures, the living environment, culture, conservation and tourism. Current development dilemmas including the means of accommodating the aspirations of an increasingly affluent population and overcoming the physical constraints of a small island state are examined. The book is designed for all readers with an interest in the economics, politics, geography and urban history of Singapore as well as those interested in Asia itself. ... Read more

Product Description
The Tamils can be defined in terms of the people who speak Tamil as their mother tongue. The Tamil language is a member of the Dravidian/South Indian family of languages. The four southernmost states of India - Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Andra Pradesh - are predominantly linguistically Dravidian, each state is carved out on the basis of predominance of the four major Dravidian languages. South India and Sri Lanka have been homelands of the Tamils from the beginning of recorded history. The region roughly covered by the modern states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala is identified as ancient "tamizakam" up to about 10th century AD. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Tamils migrated to some British colonies in search of employment and thus there are substantial Tamil populations in Malaysia, Singapore, Mauritius, Fiji and South Africa. These volumes provide an extended introduction to the Tamils by discussing all the important facets that make them so vibrant a society. They are arranged thematically and provide a glimpse into Tamil history, culture, politics, language, literature and social progress. ... Read more

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Tree Conservation Areas are large urban areas in Singapore in which no tree with a girth above 1 metre when measured 50 centimetres from the ground may be felled without permission from the National Parks Board. On 20 November 2002, a large tree was chopped down by a property management company, DTZ Debenham Tie Leung. The tree in question was a Hopea sangal, or Chengal pasir tree, a rare tree reputed to have given Changi its name. In addition, the tree was standing in a tree conservation area, which forbids any unauthorised felling of a tree with a girth above 1 metre. The tree in question had a girth of 3.4 metres. Public sentiment against the felling was high, and the courts imposed a S$8,000 fine on the company for the offence, which has a maximum fine of S$10,000. The company was also ordered to pay S$76,035 to the state in compensation for the felling. ... Read more

Product Description
The Singapore Stone is a fragment of a large sandstone slab which originally stood at the mouth of the Singapore River. The slab, which is believed to date back to at least the 13th century and possibly as early as the 10th or 11th century, bore an undeciphered inscription. Recent theories suggest that the inscription is either in Old Javanese or Sanskrit. It is likely that the person who commissioned the inscription was Sumatran. The slab was blown up in 1843 to clear and widen the passageway at the river mouth to make space for a fort and the quarters of its commander. The slab may be linked to the legendary story of the 14th-century strongman Badang, who is said to have thrown a massive stone to the mouth of the Singapore River. On Badang's death, the Rajah sent two stone pillars to be raised over his grave "at the point of the straits of Singhapura". ... Read more
