High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Smith Street is a small street running through the heart of the Chinatown district in Singapore. The only road in the area to be named after an European, it commemorates the hugely popular Sir Cecil Clementi Smith, then Governor of the Straits Settlements and High Commissioner in 1887 to 1893, who was a Chinese scholar and responsible for most of the work to combat the problems of secret societies. As is common for roads with English names, it has an informal Chinese name, hei yuen kai, meaning Theatre Street in reference to the Lai Chun Yuen Theatre then located at unit 36 and the centre of entertainment in the Kreta Ayer area. The theatre existed sometime in the 1880s and staged Cantonese operas until 1927. With the advent of cinemas, the theatre was converted into a cinema theatre, Sun Seng Cinema, just before World War II, when it was damaged in a bomb attack in 1942. ... Read more

The area around Middle Road was the original settlement of the Hainanese immigrant community, a community noted for its active role in the food and beverage history of Singapore. From the late 19th century until the Second World War, the area around Middle Road, Hylam Street and Malay Street was also a bustling Japanese enclave known for its brothels of Karayuki-san and traditional shops run by the Japanese immigrants. ... Product Description

From Preface:

"In writing these pages I have had before me a double purpose. First, to present to the general reader an account of what seemed to me to be a singularly interesting country, and one which, while being comparatively little known, has yet certain direct claims upon the attention of Englishmen. Secondly, to provide a book which, without being a guide book, would at the same time give information practically useful to the English and Australian traveller.

In sending this book to the press I have to acknowledge the courtesy of the editors of the Field and of Land and Water. To the former I am indebted for permission to make use of an unusually interesting quotation from Mr. Charles Ledger's letter to the Field on the subject [iv]of cinchona introduction, and also to include a short article of my own on "Horse-racing in Java" in Chapter XII. The latter has kindly allowed me to reproduce an account of my visit to the Buitenzorg Gardens, published in Land and Water.

My general indebtedness to standard works, such as Raffles' "Java," and Mr. Wallace's "Malay Archipelago," and also to those gentlemen who, like Dr. Treub, most kindly placed their information at my disposal in Java, is, I hope, sufficiently expressed in the text.

Professor Rhys Davids has very kindly read over the proof sheets of the chapter on the Hindu Temples; and I take this opportunity of acknowledging my sense of his courtesy in so doing, and my indebtedness to him for several valuable suggestions.

The spelling of the Javanese names and words has been a matter of some difficulty. The principle I have finally adopted is this. While adopting [v]the Dutch spelling for the names of places and in descriptions of the natives, and thus preserving the forms which the traveller will find in railway time tables and in the Dutch accounts of the island, I have returned to the English spelling in narrative passages, and in those chapters where the reader is brought into contact with previous English works. But I have found it impossible to avoid occasional inconsistencies. In my account of the literature of the island I have kept to the Dutch titles of Javanese works as closely as possible; but I have modified the transliteration in accordance with the usages of English oriental scholars."

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Sentosa, which translates to peace and tranquility in Malay, is a popular island resort in Singapore, visited by some five million people a year. Attractions include a two-kilometre long sheltered beach, Fort Siloso, two golf courses and two five-star hotels, and the upcoming Resort Worlds at Sentosa, featuring the new theme park Universal Studios Singapore. The name Blakang Mati is rather old but may not have been founded in the nineteenth century as generally believed. In fact, there exists an island that was identified as Blacan Mati in Manuel Gomes de Erédia's 1604 map of Singapore. Other early references to the island of Blakang Mati include Burne Beard Island in Wilde's 1780 MS map, Pulau Niry, Nirifa from 1690 to 1700, and the nineteenth century reference as Pulau Panjang (J.H. Moor). However, early maps did not separate Blakang Mati from the adjacent island of Pulau Brani, so it is uncertain to which island the sixteenth century place names referred. ... Read more

From the author: Analysis of proposed moves towards a more "open" Singaporean society must have as foundation detailed, qualitative explorations of ongoing socio-political practices and relations. This paper details such research undertaken with Singaporean environmental non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to examine their actions, motives, and impacts on the political landscape. It argues that NGO volunteers' practices create distinct political spaces that embody desires to reconnect with, and imagine "another" Singapore into the future. At the same time, NGO interactions with the state and government are replete with double-edged ambiguities--a state of affairs that could potentially undermine their contributions to effective Singapore governance if moves towards greater "openness" simply mean more of the same.

Product Description
Spatial database management has become an important subarea of current database research. Research in this area is often characterized by interdisciplinary cooperation: computer scientists work with geographers and environmental scientists to provide better access to spatial databases of steadily increasing size. After the First Symposium on Large Spatial Databases (SSD '89) was held in Santa Barbara, California, in 1989 (and its proceedings published as Volume 409 of this series), a second symposium (SSD'91) was held in Zurich, Switzerland. This proceedings volume contains the papers presented at SSD '91. Topics include spatial data models and access methods, performance studies, geometric algorithms, spatial query languages and user interfaces, geographic information systems, and object-oriented techniques. ... "Questions about the identity of Southeast Asia are implicitly questions about whether Southeast Asia is or can be a nation writ large. For people who live in the region, the answer is 'no.' The concept of Southeast Asia evolved from the need of Europe, America and Japan to deal collectively with a set of territories and peoples that felt no particular identification with one another."---Locating Southeast Asia

Description:
Central to the Singapore's land transportation strategy is to develop an extensive rapid transit network to provide quality public transport services and maximize accessibility for commuters to key nodes of employment, housing, leisure and other social activities. This paper presents a study on the impact of the mass rapid transit (MRT) network on accessibility in Singapore using an integrated GIS tool. Four types of accessibility are assessed, including the accessibility to the central business district, to working population, and to industrial and commercial opportunities. It also analyzes the changes in accessibility brought about by the new MRT lines. The accessibility analyses conducted in this study show that the closer to the central area of Singapore and the East-West MRT line a location is, the higher accessibility it attains, and the new North-East MRT line has greatly improved accessibility of the northeastern areas, but has insignificant impact on accessibility of the northern, northwestern and eastern part of the country. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Asia on Internet Time
I love the Rough Guides, Moon Guides, and Lonely Planet. The only problemis, they often assume you're going for 3 weeks or 6 months. I can seldomget away for more than 8-10 days at a time. Fodor's doesn't just dump a lotof destination info on you. They help you prioritize by listing"must-see" sights and presenting multiple alternative itinerariesfor trips of different lengths, etc.

Last December, Fodor's SE Asia guidehelped me figure out that the Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore odyssey we wantedjust wouldn't fit comfortably into 10 days. So we postponed that trip untilsomeday when we have at least 2 or 3 weeks. Instead, we simply flew intoBangkok and immediately booked a 3-day Phnom Penh/Angkor tour. In all, wedid 3 days each in Cambodia and Bangkok and 4 days in Tokyo. It was afabulous trip.

This time I'm using Fodor's Japan, together with the Moonand Rough Guides (and of course the Internet), to plan a 10-day solo tripto Hokkaido. From Fodor's I get the highlights, along with a good idea ofwhat I can expect to fit into 10 days. From the other two I get obscure(but equally important!) details, such as the fact that the little farmingtown of Furano (not mentioned in Fodor's) gets a lot of Japanese touristsbecause it was the setting for the long-running TV drama Kita no Kuni Kara(From the North Country). I've only seen a few early episodes of that show, but it's enough that now I want to see Furano too.

To sum up, I useFodor's as my starting point, then read other guides to get extra details.I've done 2 Asia trips this way, and I'll be doing the 3rd one very soon.

4-0 out of 5 stars A concise and easy-to-use guide
As Fodors does like no one else, this pleasing digestible guidebook gives practical information to the traveller for an incredibly large and diverse region.A great starting point for trip planning in southeast Asia. ... Read more
