D-Day, the largest amphibious invasion in history, took place on 6 June 1944. The subsequent battle of Normandy involved over a million men, and helped seal the fate of The Third Reich. This is a graphic account of the planning and execution of Operation Overlord, as well as the campaign which effectively destroyed the German forces in France, opening the way for the Allied advance. Including a wealth of superb photographs and maps, the book also contains 30 facsimile items of rare memorabilia, including diaries, letters and memos, as well as an audio CD containing 72 minutes of veteran interviews, bringing this 'Day of Days' dramatically to life. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars excellent visuals

This very fine collection of reproductions of articles related to the Allied invasion of Europe on June 6, 1944 and the slog to Paris is topped off by an item I didn't even find until I'd worked through the whole book: a superb cd containing first-person accounts by D-Day veterans from Britain, America, and Germany.

This product complements rather than substituting for a history of that great day. It will be enjoyed and appreciated most by users who are already familiar with the shape of the battle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Almost like being there

Put 'D-Day' into Amazon's book search and you'll come up with over two hundred titles and I expect most will be about the momentous events in June 1944. This book covers them as an 'experience' and I think it does it rather well. Don't be put off when you see it only has sixty-four pages because it includes a lot of other things as well. There are fifty plus printed items which are facsimiles of maps (one is a German map thirty by twenty-two inches) military reports, logbooks, posters, soldiers diaries, a newspaper page, letters and more, they are either stuck on the pages or in envelopes to be removed and examined. One of the nice things is that the reproduction of these extras is particularly good and they do really help to create the experience.

Each spread covers one event with a mix of text, photos (with good captions) a map and other graphics all beautifully presented in a scrapbook format. If I have a criticism it is that the maps, which have a lot of information, are rather small so I had to use John Mann's Atlas of the D-Day and Normandy Landings to fully understand the flow of events. While looking at this treasure of printed material you can also hear on the included CD (seventy minutes) the voices of men who were there and made it happen.

This is almost a unique publication but while looking through the Amazon list I came across 'Our finest day: D-Day: June 1944' (ISBN 0811830500) which also presents historical documents as reproductions to be handled but I'll stick with this D-Day experience, I don't think it can be beat.

Published to mark the 50th anniversary of the invasion ofNormandy, Stephen E. Ambrose's D-Day: June 6, 1944 relies onover 1,400 interviews with veterans, as well as prodigious research inmilitary archives on both sides of the Atlantic. He provides acomprehensive history of the invasion which also eloquently testifiesas to how common soldiers performed extraordinary feats. A major themeof the book, upon which Ambrose would later expand in Citizen Soldiers,is how the soldiers from the democratic Allied nations rose to theoccasion and outperformed German troops thought to be invincible. Themany small stories that Ambrose collected from paratroopers, sailors, infantrymen, and civilians make the excitement, confusion, and sheerterror of D-day come alive on the page. --Robert McNamara ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Typical Ambrose Contribution
I'm not sure what people expect when they delve into an Ambrose work. He's not Hemingway and he never pretended to be.What he is is a darned good interviewer and recorder of history.

He has spoken to thousands of World War II veterans who were at one time in their lives reluctant to speak to anyone about their experiences.Ambrose has chronicled those memories in a series of books that represent an irreplacable history of that most crucial conflict in our history!"D-Day June 6, 1944 The Climactic Battle of World War II" takes it righful place among his other efforts.

It is inconsequential that he uses primary sources in more than one of his books. If the book's organization stalls or suffers a bit from time to time is also less important than the plethora of maps and pictures provided to give the reader a better sense of the landscape and battles. The book is fully indexed with a huge bibliography and copious notes and attributions along with a military glossary.

This book is a must-read for anyone interested in learning more about our greatest generation.Thank you, Stephen Ambrose for gathering these accounts and recollections before these stories were lost to history forever as these aging warriors passed on!

Author of The Last Jump: A Novel of World War II

4-0 out of 5 stars Star - Spangled D-Day!
This is a very patriotic account of D-Day.If one were to believe Ambrose the US forces could have done D-Day on their own.No Problem! The issue this presents is that the contributions of other allied forces tends to be marginalized. In a sense Ambrose represents the tendency for the US to take over the history and call it our own.No wonder others can get annoyed with this approach at times.

While I would call this a good read on D-Day I wouldn't venture to say its a definitive work on the subject.A far more readable and enjoyable classic is Cornelius Ryan's LONGEST DAY which far surpasses Ambrose in literary style.Ambrose attempts to be more technical, and folksy at the same time.He also plays down certain famous events in Ryan's book in order to emphasize others in his own.

Ambrose is unabashedly pro-American.The Germans were past their prime and no match for those magnificent GIs who stormed ashore. The British and Canadians had better outward appearance but were slackards.Always wanting to brew a tea before moving on to the next position! This is petty, and certainly not accurate.Again, the author reveals his own prejudice by making such remarks.

Since Ambrose credits the US with virtually winning D-Day, it comes as no surprise that most of the book centers on the Actions of US forces.About six chapters alone are dedicated to the events on Omaha. While this certainly was the crisis beach, the amount of detail related seems redundant after a while. This could have been reduced to two large chapters and been no loss to the overall work.In contrast the British and Canadians each get a slim chapter for their respective beaches. One gets the impression that Ambrose would have preferred just combining them all into one moderate sized chapter in order to get on with the American side of the story. The Germans get a few mentions here and there almost as an after-thought.

Coming out on the 50th anniversary of the D-Day events this book no doubt was considered an important contribution to the general history of the topic at that time.Ambrose was a popular historian and he was catering to a general reading public and to many US veterans who were still around. The book has merit, but falls far short of being comprehensive. For American readers this will have far more appeal than for other nationalities who may feel somewhat slighted! A better title for this work might have been D-DAY: THE US EXPERIENCE.To balance this work read Keegan's SIX ARMIES IN NORMANDY and of course Ryan's classic LONGEST DAY.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stephen Ambrose "D-Day: June 6, 1944"
This is the best account of the Normandy landing and battle for Europe that I've read.Ambrose is a great historian. His research is thorough and his writing is excellent. He makes the events leading up to the Normandy landing and the invasion of occupied Europe come alive through the use of oral histories and historical documentaries. This is a must read for anyone interested in World War II and the military history of the western world.

1-0 out of 5 stars Putting the Record Straight
Ambrose described an alleged incident on Omaha Beach in which a Captain Zappacosta threatened the British coxswain of his landing craft with a pistol in order to make him move closer inshore. Private Robert Sales, the only survivor of that landing craft has since stated that this was a complete invention. It never happened. Sales, who was angered by the allegation, challenged Ambrose in person and asked him to correct it but the writer just brushed it off. There is much more in this vein - Ambrose rarely missed an opportunity to disparage America's Allies. If this is representative of the standard of his research, then this book should be treated with extreme caution. His sections on the Anglo-Canadian contribution to D-Day are in any case lamentably brief. This is just bad history. There are many excellent works about D-Day, but this isn't one of them.

4-0 out of 5 stars An interesting book
Stephen E. Ambrose is an acclaimed author of numerous books. The book is written to inform people of what went into the battle of Normandy, France during World War II. The book is very helpful to someone that wants to know all about the battle and how the battle turned out. Ambrose goes into detail about how the different beaches were taken. The book includes accounts of different men that took part in the invasion. The book's copyright was in 1994 and the information is accurate mainly because it has first hand accounts of the men that were there. The author covers the subject matter by starting it off with talking about some of the people that he wants to thank for taking part in his book and some of the people that helped him. Ambrose lets the readers understand some of the terms that the military uses so that the reader will be able to understand what is going on. The book is very interesting and it is a read that most people will enjoy although it is not meant for children because of some of the language of the men that were there. ... Read more

Neff remains objective in his telling of the six day war.He is a slave to the facts sometimes to a fault (an enjoyable fault, usually, as when he finds it necessary to tell us what President Johnson ate for breakfast andwhat funny quip he uttered to an aide). He takes the reader into theIsraeli war room, the Jordanian palace, the White House and the Egyptianpresident's office as if the reader was an invited guest. You understandthe mindset of all the power players. The story itself is outrageous. There is so much about this war and the time that I did not know, yet, Ifind it hard to believe, isn't common knowledge.Did you know the Israelismay have painted American insignias on the wings of some of their planes tomake the Egyptians feel totally isolated from the West? This book isfilled with amazing discoveries. ... Our Finest Day: D-Day, June 6, 1944

A friend lent me a copy of this rather short book before I decided to order two copies, one for another friend and one for myself. It's unique, as it includes reproductions of letters, a map, The New York Times front page announcing the invasion, directions for arming (or disarming!) a hand grenade, etc. I'm pleased I have it.The seller packaging was very good, as was the condition of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brief but Revealing
Despite its brevity, this book is both informative and revealing. Bowden gives a good overview of what preceded and led up to D-Day. He describes Operation Overlord and the German defenses on the French coast, as well as the air and land assault plans.

Especially interesting are the authentic photos and artifacts from the collection of the D-Day Museum in New Orleans, founded by the late Stephen Ambrose. These artifacts include a soldiers' diary, the front page of the New York Times, a letter from Roosevelt, and an inspirational message from Eisenhower. All are able to be pulled out and looked at by the reader.

One of the artifacts, "A Pocket Guide to France" was given to the military and is included in this book as a pull out. It was simple and patriotic as it explained the military mission in France, the history of the conflict, and told the soldiers how to behave while in France.

Bowden also writes of the possible pitfalls in the plan, including dropping soldiers at night and the unpredictability of the weather. He concisely relates the events of D-Day, the airborne efforts, the invasion of Utah Beach, and the action of the armada, all interspersed with the words of those who were there.

Following this is a section about the Allied advance through France and into Germany...and less than a year later, the Reich was in ruins and Hitler was dead.

I liked this book most of all for its simplicity and authenticity.

4-0 out of 5 stars D-Day Militaria Book
This short 30 page account of the D-Day invasion with first hand
narrative is unique in that it contains reproductions of various items associated with the invasion. There are personal items such as notebooks and Bibles and operational items such as orders

4-0 out of 5 stars A day when the actions of a few made an enormous difference
By May of 1944, it was clear that Germany could no longer win the war in Europe. However, it was also possible that the Nazi armies could fight the Allies to a stalemate. While the Soviet armies were making progress in their eastward advancement, the Atlantic coast of Europe seemed impenetrable. Only by attacking and overcoming this obstacle could the Allies hope to send Germany to a total defeat.
That invasion took place on June 6, 1944 and as everyone who has studied it knows it was the greatest amphibious invasion ever carried out. The Allied leaders spent years creating their meticulous plans and it was time to carry them out. However, it is also the case that it came very close to being a catastrophic failure.
This book presents all the facts, all of the statistics, the broad strategies as well as several stories of individual heroism. For the invasion succeeded, but only because a relatively few men found the courage to rise above their fear. In a battle that involved so many men, it is amazing to read how few men made the difference. By leading from the front and moving forward in the face of fire, these men were the spears that pierced the impenetrable.
Written at the appropriate level for the middle school student, this is a history that all students should read. There are times in the life of a nation when the actions of a small number of men make a very large difference. D-Day was such a time and we should all honor their memory by learning what they accomplished.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mostly about the facts.
This book contains plenty of facts. It is engrossing because of its details. It could have been a little longer.I recommend it for kids who are new to D-Day.

4-0 out of 5 stars a good book
How much do you know about what really happened on June 6th 1944? This book has many tales of heroism and great leaders who fought to the finish for our country. This book is about how the allies launched a massive amphibious invasion on the beaches of Normandy, France. It tells stories of all of the parts of the attack, American, British, and Canadian. I liked this book very much and am happy with my choice.

One thing in this book that pleased me was the description of what it must have been like to be a soldier during those times. It told of many hardships, and what is was like being on the battlefield surrounded by death. An example of this is when the author tells the story of a captain who had to remind a group of soldiers how to fire a rifle because they were in shock from all of the dead bodies lying around them.

This book would not have been nearly as interesting if the author hadn't used such vivid vocabulary and wonderful written expression throughout the book. A wonderful example of vivid vocabulary is when the author is explaining the naval bombardment of the beaches. "There were shells flying through the air in every direction. The ear shattering sounds of 50 pound shells hitting the sand were abundant like rain."

The only thing about this book that I didn't particularly find interesting was how random the book was. The author would switch from an intense battle scene straight over to a standstill nothingness on another beach. This is perhaps the only thing that was wrong with this book.

The Story of D-Day by Bruce Bilven Jr. is a wonderful book of many tales, and should be read by all.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite book
One of the best book I have ever read in the past year has to be the Story of D-Day June 6,1944 by Bliven. It is a marvelous book about the invasion of Normandy. One of the major reasons I enjoy this book is how they planned, and how they trained and how they put it to good use. At night and in the morning of D-Day the paratroopers jumped by the thousands and their supplies were lost. Their supplies were in the hands of the enemy. Another reason I found the book to be so wonderful is the landing at Pointe de Hoc. The allied troops had to carry the rocket launchers up the cliffs even as the enemy cut their ropes , but they made it . Of course my favorite reason for loving this book is the vehicle called Ducks. This vehicle could move like a boat on water and drive like a vehicle called Ducks. This vehicle could movelike a boat on water and drivelike a vehicle on land . Mostof the Ducks sank except for one and it was trying to stay afloat and a small ship came to the rescue and saved the crew of the Duck . To conclude ,the story of D-Day by Bliven was truly my favorite book. ... Read more

The unparalleled work of history that recreates the battle that changed World War II -- now in a new edition for the 50th anniversary of D-Day.

Newly in print for the first time in years, this is the classic story of the invasion of Normandy, and a book that endures as a masterpiece of living history. A compelling tale of courage and heroism, glow and tragedy, The Longest Day painstakingly recreates the fateful hours that preceded and followed the massive invasion of Normandy to retell the story of an epic battle that would turn the tide against world fascism and free Europe from the grip of Nazi Germany.

For this new edition of The Longest Day, the original photographs used in the first 1959 edition have been reassembled and painstakingly reproduced, and the text has been freshly reset. Here is a book that is a must for any follower of history, as well as for anyone who wants to better understand how free nations prevailed at a time when darkness enshrouded the earth.Amazon.com Review
A true classic of World War II history, The Longest Daytells the story of the massive Allied invasion of Normandy on June 6,1944. Journalist Cornelius Ryan began working on the book in themid-1950s, while the memories of the D-day participants were stillfresh, and he spent three years interviewing D-day survivors in theUnited States and Europe. When his book was first published in 1959,it was tremendously successful, establishing many of the legends ofD-day that endure in the public's mind. Ryan was enormously skillfulat weaving small personal stories into the overall narrative, and hewould later use the same technique to depict the airborne invasion ofHolland in A Bridge TooFar. Not only is The Longest Day a pleasure to read, but subsequent historians, dutifully noting its accuracy, have reliedheavily on Ryan's research for their own accounts. In short, the bookis a "must read" for anyone interested in the D-dayinvasion. --Robert McNamara ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Classic D-Day
This remains the classic account of D-Day.Ryan is masterful in his command of the details.Even better is his ability as a story teller and writer. While perhaps slightly dated; newer info.about Allied counter-intelligence and ULTRA has come to light since this was written, in no way does this detract from the value of the book in any way.Purists may also find fault with the lack of footnotes in the text.

Ryan gives us the human experience of D-Day and what it was like to hit the beaches or to try and defend them.Newer writers like Steven Ambrose have tried to equal this work with more detailed studies of their own, but they often fall far short in comparison.

Ryan gives credit to all the parties involved, not just US forces. He does not accuse commonwealth forces of brewing tea and slacking off! Or heap undo praise on US troops to the exclusion of all others. This is a balanced, beautifully written work which reads like a story.

Ryan proves that to be a good historian one needs also to be a good writer. Many historians tend to fall short in that regard today.THE LONGEST DAY shall remain a classic for all time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding description of the Normandy Invasion
Cornelius Ryan does something unusual in this book. He tries to show the perspective of all the sides involved. And to show he is doing this he does not open with a close look at Ike, but rather one of Rommel. In using this technique he enables us to understand the strategy, the mentality, the values of the sides involved. But the most dramatic and interesting parts of the work are descriptions of the actual heroics of battle, the scenes of combat and confusion. The whole story of the opening night parachute landings and effort to prevent the Germans from being able to send major reenforcements shows just how confusing difficult surprising War can be. Ryan is a humane writer and one with a straightforward factual no- nonsense tone which when the situation is important enough creates for great drama in itself. The description of Eisenhower and his staff making the decision to go with the June 6 date is one of the best things in the book.
I might also note that the ideal reviewers of this book are not people like myself who were not there, but those who actually participated in the Normandy Invasion. I note a very favorable review by at least one of them on this site.

5-0 out of 5 stars A stunning introduction to the real war
I read this novel as a 13 year old girl, and it has forever shaped my view on the tragedies and triumphs of World War II. It is a novel that must be read by anyone who truly wants to understand what went on at the beaches of Normandy that day, and all the planning and anxiety that went on beforehand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exciting and Balanced Account of D-Day
D-Day is one of the most important days in the last one hundred years. It has been portrayed in countless times in different forms through movies (examples The Longest Day (Two-Disc Collector's Edition), Saving Private Ryan (Special Limited Edition), and Band of Brothers), video games Medal of Honor Allied Assault Deluxe, Close Combat: Invasion Normandy), but written word shouldn't be forgotten. Cornelius Ryan's first book brings it to life. He describes the events leading up to the invasion, the aborted attempt, the airborne landings the night before, and storming the beaches. Ryan provides his colorful history from a range of sources including interviews with generals to soldiers to civilians. He also bases his story on his research of captured German documents and other firsthand historical accounts. There also some nice B/W pictures provided including pictures from Ryan's personal collection.

He lays out the story through the perspective of all sides. He shows the story unfolding from the eyes of all the allies, the defending Germans, as well as the civilians directly involved. His writing style is very dramatic and keeps your enthusiasm throughout. He also doesn't neglect the actions of the non-American allies. You are introduced to Gold, Juno, and Sword beaches as well as the well known Omaha and Utah. Ryan also shows us how disorganized the Germans were on D-day. Key members of the German command were away including Rommel. Armored reinforcements were moved and then halted. You never know what could have been, but the book makes you appreciate how fortunate the allies were on D-Day. The generals were expecting that all the beaches would be as bloody as Omaha.

My only complaints, roughly three-fifths of the book are events leading up to the beach landings. I think more detail especially on the advances from the beaches should have been provided. Another detraction is the lack of maps in the version that I have. I'm familiar with the beaches and airborne landing areas, but maps showing these areas would have been very helpful to readers not familiar with the subject.

Despite those minor detractions, I highly recommend this book. The sacrifices made on June 6th 1944 should never be forgotten. We are fortunate that Cornelius Ryan has captured a little of that for us. See Ryan's other books as well, A Bridge Too Far: The Classic History of the Greatest Battle of World War II and Last Battle: The Classic History of the Battle for Berlin.

5-0 out of 5 stars Experience D-Day For Yourself
"The Longest Day" by Cornelius Ryan, is one of the most readable historical accounts I have been privileged to experience. As a substitute teacher, a high school student asked me last year what I found so interesting about history books. My response was to ask the student if they would like to step into a time machine and visit any period of time in history. The student's response was immediate and positive.I suggested to the student that a well-written history book was exactly like that: stepping into a time machine and walking through history, personally experiencing events.I shared that through reading, I had personally been present at the American Revolution, the Civil War, and various other great events;I had met Abraham Lincoln and George Washington, John Wilkes Booth, and Teddy Roosevelt. The student seemed awed at the thought.

Now, thanks to Cornelius Ryan, I have stood on the beaches at Normandy, on June 6, 1944; I have seen both the carnage and the glory that was D-Day; I have both grieved over the sickening sight of men drowning one step off their transport, or being blown to pieces, and have exulted at seeing the courage of soldiers laying their lives on the line to defeat a great and monstrous evil; I have witnessed the almost devastating weight that was on Dwight Eisenhower's shoulders as he made his decisions, and watched the combined forces of the allies respond to their orders. For the first time, I have a deeper understanding of the maxim "War is Hell!"No historical account, however well written, can truly place one on the scene of a historical event... but Ryan comes as close as any historian I have been privileged to read.If you want to understand the price our gallant soldiers (including all participating allied nations), read "The Longest Day" by Cornelius Ryan. You will never forget it. ... "In Israel and the West, it is called the Six Day War. In the Arab world, it is known as the June War, or simply as the Setback. Never has a conflict so short, unforeseen, and largely unwanted by both sides so transformed the world. The Yom Kippur War, the war in Lebanon, the Camp David accords, the controversy over Jerusalem and Jewish settlements in the West Bank, the intifada, and the rise of Palestinian terror are all part of the outcome of those six days of intense Arab-Israeli fighting in the summer of 1967. Michael B. Oren spotlights all the participantsArab, Israeli, Soviet, and Americanthat were involved in this earth-shaking clash. Drawing on thousands of top-secret documents and exclusive personal interviews, he recreates the regional and international context that, by the late 1960s, virtually assured an Arab-Israeli conflagration." ...
