Product Description
“A marvelous celestial playhouse . . . offering visitors a virtual journey through time, space and the mysteries of the cosmos.” —New York Times

The Rose Center for Earth and Space of the American Museum of Natural History—the dazzling $210-million museum within a museum that opened in New York City in early 2000—has won exuberant praise from critics and the public. Its awe-inspiring form, a huge sphere inside a glass cube, reminds people of how enthralling great architecture can be. And the sophisticated and imaginative exhibits with which it tells the story of the universe have already earned the Rose Center acclaim as the world’s foremost museum of astronomy, astrophysics, and Earth science.

This official introduction and guide to the Rose Center takes the reader on a tour of its two spectacular main exhibition spaces—the Hall of the Universe and the Hall of Planet Earth—and explores its architectural and technological wonders. Here is ample evidence of why U.S. News & World Report has proclaimed the Rose Center “spectacular . . . a stunning new destination for star-gazing earthlings.” ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Look Inside a Planetarium for the 21st Century
In the late 1990s, New York's beloved (but aged and failing) Hayden Planetarium was torn down to make way for what designers promised would be a state-of-the-art showcase of Earth & space science. At first, skeptical New Yorkers weren't sure if the controversial design would fit in with the surrounding residential neighborhood... but when the construction was complete, they gazed in awe at the marvelous steel and glass cube of the new Rose Center for Earth and Space, which featured a multi-story Planetarium that seemed to hover in midair within the structure.
Pick up this book if you'd like to see how New York's spectacular new planetarium came into being. Inside, you'll find beautiful full-color photos of the Rose Center as it appeared during construction and as it stands today, and you'll learn about the new technologies used to create its many hi-tech exhibits.
As an added bonus, the book provides an overview of some of the recent discoveries and hot topics in modern earth and space science... as you'll see, when it comes to learning about our planet and our universe, we've come a long way!
I highly recommend this book to space science fans, as well as architecture buffs. It's a great look inside an exciting new facility that's sure to delight visitors for decades to come! ... Read more

Product Description
Space, time, love, violence, and the human body: these are but some of the themes explored in this provocative book of state-of-the-art video installations. Each a separate and carefully delineated environment created through multimedia technologies, the eight installations described and illustrated here were produced by an accomplished international group of artists: Judith Barry and Brad Miskell, New York; Stan Douglas, Vancouver; Teiji Furuhashi, Kyoto; Gary Hill, Seattle; Chris Marker, Paris; Marcel Odenbach, Cologne; Tony Oursler, New York; and Bill Viola, Long Beach, California. In the related exhibition, which ran at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1995, the viewer entered the space and became part of what he or she observed. Vivid, complex, and endlessly inventive, these works demonstrate the range and sophistication of an art form born in the last decades of the 20th century.

Artists Include:Judith Barry, Brad Miskell, Stan Douglas, Teiji Furuhashi, Gary Hill, Chris Marker, Marcel Odenbach, Tony Oursler, andBill Viola.

First of all, "Chip" Delaney was not the author of this book, although he did write a nifty introduction relating science fiction to performance art.Barbara London's essay and chapters on the eight artists in the NYMOMA show are outstanding!Anyone curious about performance art AND any serious student of this vital topic would do well to consult this book. Each chapter focuses on an artist in this field, showing beautiful color and black & white photos of performance pieces; also included are extensive chronologies of their past shows and selective bibliographies about their work. This book is a "must" for any serious artist and art library. ... Excerpt:The National Air and Space Museum (NASM) of the Smithsonian Institution holds the largest collection of historic aircraft and spacecraft in the world. Located in Washington, D.C., United States, it is also a center for research into the history, and science of aviation and spaceflight, as well as planetary science and terrestrial geology and geophysics. Almost all space and aircraft on display are originals or backups to the originals. It is the most popular of the Smithsonian museums and operates an annex, the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, at Dulles International Airport. The museum currently conducts restoration of its collection at the Paul E. Garber Preservation, Restoration, and Storage Facility in Suitland, Maryland. Because of the museum's close proximity to the United States Capitol, the Smithsonian wanted a building that would be architecturally impressive but would not stand out too boldly against the Capitol building. St. Louis-based architect Gyo Obata of Hellmuth, Obata and Kassabaum accepted the challenge and designed the museum as four simple marble-encased cubes containing the smaller and more theatrical exhibits, connected by three spacious steel-and-glass atria which house the larger exhibits such as missiles, airplanes and spacecraft. The mass of the museum echoes the National Gallery of Art across the National Mall, and uses the same pink Tennessee marble as the National Gallery. Built by Gilbane Building Company, the museum was completed in 1976. The west glass wall of the building is used for the installation of airplanes, functioning as a giant door. Excerpt: White Sands National Monument -The first exploration was led by a party of US Army officers in 1849. The Mescalero Apache were already living in the area at the time. Hispanic families started farming communities in the area at Tularosa in 1861 and at La Luz in 1863. Sign at the monument entrance. The idea of creating a national park here goes back at least to 1898, when a group in El Paso proposed a Mescalero National Park. Their idea was for a game hunting preserve, which conflicted with the idea of preservation held by the Department of the Interior, and their plan was not successful. In 1921-1922 Albert Bacon Fall, United States Secretary of the Interior and owner of a large ranch in Three Rivers near White Sands, promoted the idea of a national park there an "All-Year National Park" that, unlike more northerly parks, would be usable all year round. This idea ran into a number of difficulties and did not succeed. Tom Charles, an Alamogordo insurance agent and civic booster, was influenced by Fall's ideas. By emphasizing the economic benefits Charles was able to mobilize enough support to have the park created. On January 18, 1933, President Herbert Hoover created the White Sands National Monument, acting under the authority of the Antiquities Act of 1906. The dedication and grand opening was on April 29, 1934. Tom Charles became the first custodian of the monument, and upon his retirement in 1939 became the first concessionaire, operating as White Sands Service Company. The Headquarters building (also called the Visitor Center Complex) was construc...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=330027 ... Read more

Product Description
The Brooklyn Museumis the second largest art museum in New York City and among the largest in the United States. It is housed in a 560,000 square foot landmark Beaux-Arts building, set amid 19th century parks and gardens. The architects (McKim, Mead and White) envisioned it as the largest museum building in the world, but only one-sixth of their design was completed. This book traces its building in the years 1893-1927, and subsequent redevelopment and features many fascinating archival images and detailed views of the building's lively decorative program, including the new entrance pavilion that makes this historic edifice a true building for the future. ... Chapters: The Journey Museum and Gardens, Chapel in the Hills, South Dakota Air and Space Museum, Lincoln Borglum Museum. Not illustrated. Excerpt:The Journey Museum and Gardens is a museum in Rapid City, South Dakota, USA with 7 acres of gardens. It is set up as a journey through the history of the Black Hills, starting with the Native American creation stories, moving into the 2.5 billion years of history in the rock record with the geology exhibit, paleontology, archaeology, Native American inhabitants, and concluding with the pioneers that traveled west. The Geology Gallery contains a wall that shows a 2.5 billion year rock record of the Black Hills area. The Museum of Geology at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology provides artifacts and information for patrons to better understand the timeline. Along with the geology section is the paleontology section with fossils, much of which is on loan from the Black Hills Institute of Geological Resarch in Hill City, South Dakota. A model of an on-site dig with a tent provides patrons with a sense of field work, sometimes with an retired paleontologist working in it who can answer questions. A model of a T-Rex and a Stegosaurus accompanied by a roaring sound track are also included in the exhibit. After the Geology and Paleontology exhibits is the Archaeology Gallery. This gallery is split into five sections, according to time period. It is divided into five sections listed in the chart below. The Archaeology Gallery contains artefacts and information from The South Dakota Archaeological Research Center. In front of the museum The Sioux Indian Museum, the next gallery after Archaeology, contains 5,500 pieces regulated by the United States Department of the Interior's Indian Arts and Crafts Bo...
