New reading series brings foreign language acquisition into the 21st century

While the world produces more and more reading material each year, from magazines to newspapers to websites, why are most language learners still relying on contrived texts and classic literature for language acquisition? Providing entertaining contemporary texts in the original language, the Better Reading Language series is for those who want to brush up on a foreign language.

With the authentic materials provided in this series, readers will be able to peruse a Latin Grammys write-up in Spanish, a feature on Alain Ducasse's favorite recipes in French, or a review of a Milan fashion show in Italian. Readings on everything from music and sports to cinema and contemporary family life are arranged in increasing difficulty within chapters. Along the way, learners will find instruction and exercises to help develop improved reading speed, comprehension, and vocabulary. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars fabulous book
I've been at an intermediate level for years but have recently been motivated to improve.I began to meet with tutors for conversational skills, but realized I needed to refresh my tenses and improve my vocabulary a bit first.

Reading individual sentences in various forms and adding new language skills every few pages has proven to be a very effective method in learning Spanish sentence structure.I like to test my ability by reading news in Spanish or my personal favorite, People en Espanol!

My only complaint would be that this book is someone geared for someone learning Spanish from Spain. Some of the words and the inclusion of the vosotros tense are a bit irrelevant to my needs, but overall this book is amazing.

Tip:I find it helpful to read aloud. This forces me to practice my pronunciation which is important because I plan on being able to speak it!

2-0 out of 5 stars The Reading Material Is Just Not Interesting
I suppose some people will enjoy reading recipes and menus in Spanish, but I found them a chore. Much of the reading material in this book simply doesn't interest me. I do think the reading reviews and workbook-like sections of the book have good information, particularly if you enjoy the readings. However, I didn't find the reading material any more interesting than what you'd find in a beginning or intermediate Spanish textbook. After spending a little bit of time with this book, I decided that it just wasn't my cup of tea. I went down to the library and checked out some Curious George books and I find them far more entertaining and useful in terms of applying my Spanish. Full disclosure: I am a beginning Spanish student.

4-0 out of 5 stars good review
Very good review materials for upper level high school or intermediate level university Spanish courses.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb instruction on a much-neglected topic
Jean Yates can now count me as a member of her fan club. Her book "Correct Your Spanish Blunders" is one of my most trusted Spanish learning aides, so I was already familiar with her scholarship when I stumbled across "Better Reading Spanish". I bought the book after only a cursory glance, and my initial hunch about its value has proved correct.

A book like this is long overdue. The syllabus of any high-school or college Spanish course is almost guaranteed to state that the goals are to help the student achieve proficiency in speaking, writing AND reading. Yet reading always seems to get the short end of the stick. How is an instructor to know whether students are tracking with the reading material, or pinpoint the source of their reading comprehension deficiencies? Errors in speaking and writing, on the other hand, are obvious, and those two areas usually dominate the coursework and in-class activities. For reading practice, the teacher generally assigns a primary source -- in my experience, either short stories or books -- assuming students will have minimal difficulty reading in a foreign language. But even with the guidance of patient and dedicated instructors, I still agonized over many long reading assignments. If only "Better Reading Spanish" (and its French counterpart) had been around when I was in college!

The most obvious feature of this book is the reading material, all of which was well chosen, IMO. I also found the selections highly engaging. But besides that, the book has a set of detailed and comprehensive self-test exercises after each selection, as well as sidebars on the various Spanish phrasing introduced in the reading. In particular, I liked the infobox describing Spanish's use of the gerund to express continuing action (e.g., va recogiendo, anda silbando, and the "seguir + gerund" I learned long ago).

For me, this book has taken the mystery out of unfamiliar words, idioms and grammatical constructions. It has also helped me discover the pleasure of reading original works without having to consult a dictionary, or worse yet, a translation. So once again I say bravo to Jean Yates, this time for her guidance on reading foreign-language text. A previously overlooked area of instruction now has the definitive self-help guide for mastering this important skill.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is a great book for an advanced student
As the editor suggests, this is not a text for beginning Spanish students. However, as a supplement to a class, it's excellent. Use this when you need a refresher during the summer, or before you delve back in to an intense course.

The great thing is that the readings are so diverse! If you don't like one chapter, the next will surely give you another take on vocabulary, grammar, etc. It is not a textbook - it's a reading book.

Definitely, it's geared toward older students, avid readers. For younger students who want to be able to write out activities or draw in their text-workbooks, try Flip Flop Spanish. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best children's immersion Spanish CD thus far...
After our local elementary school canceled Spanish class due to budget cuts I began looking for a CD that my three kids ages 3 - 7 could listen to in the car while we commute.I checked out many different ones from the local library and while they were okay, they all had annoying voices or music, way too much English, or were just boring. But more importantly, my kids disliked them.So based on the other reviews I purchased Play and Learn Spanish and have been extremely happy. My kids love the CD and will actually ask me to play it.We have listened to it 4 or 5 times already in the last month and can now sing many of the songs and enjoy the dialog. The CD is entirely in Spanish except for the introduction, but the book translates every dialog and song, has pictures for some of the vocabulary, and gives interesting facts about the language and culture.I have been so impressed that I am now buying another Ana Lomba Spanish book and CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great resource
I homeschool my kids and I'm always looking for great language resources for Spanish and French for them. This is a winner! I use this book and Spanish for Little Boystogether for my 2 sons. Both of them keep them interested and focused on learning a new language! And that is saying a lot!

3-0 out of 5 stars I don't like the voice of speakers...
I really like the words, and songs in this book.
But I don't like the voice of speakers... sounds like they are not professional voice actors. They are pretending a mother and a kid, but their voice are not. I wish they use real kid's voice.
To me, their voice are awful...

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource.......BUT not for Beginners
As a native Spanish speaking mother to two non-native speaking children, I frequently find myself looking for tools that will help me incorporate Spanish into our daily life. The Play and Learn Spanish book and companion CD are a great resource to have on hand for said purpose. However, I do use it as a teaching tool in that I am the one who listens to the CD (for familiarization of implementation and immersion) and then present the information to my children (in the appropriate setting), at a slower pace.I do agree that Ana Lomba and Marcela Summerville speak at a speed that non-native speakers will find very rapid. I also agree with previous reviewers' comments that this program is teacher intensive and will require previous background andknowledge of the language.I recommend it to people in my situation who are fluent and desire different angles of exposure for their children.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too complex
Not good as a primary text for teaching Spanish at home.Songs are very complicated with lots of difficult vocabulary, while children may learn to sing a song they certainly are not going to know what it means. I am going to be looking for something else to use - very disappointed since some of the other reviewers suggested this would be a good tool to use at home. ... Read more

Product Description
[SERIES COPY:] This informative, colorful, and fun-to-use series of guides is perfect for anyone who wants to learn a second language quickly and easily. Each volume employs the amusing and always true-to-life cartoon strips of Claire Bretecher--an artist renowned in Europe for her witty and controversial cartoons--to not simply explain but illustrate the words and wording of a given foreign language in its common, everyday use.

While there are other cartoon dictionaries on the market, most of them provide only single cartoons. This attractive series, on the other hand, provides whole strips which tell a story and effectively bring context and other memorable features to one's learning. And only this series offers cartoons done in full color, and written by a popular cartoonist. These vocabulary-builders are the perfect starting place for people who want to begin, or else strengthen, their acquisition of French, German, or Spanish. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn Spanish words with comic strips
The Oxford Spanish Cartoon-strip is an excellent resource for those who desire to speak the Spanish language as it is truly spoken in everyday, informal social situations. If you're looking for the standard language that is spoken on the radio, television or in formal settings, then this book is not for you. This book contains an introduction, a how to use the book breakdown, a list of abbreviations, a pronunciation guide, thirty stories, a glossary and a list of verbs. Designed to teach students the "spoken language" of Spanish, The Oxford Cartoon-strip is centered on thirty cartoon strips and themes which appear on a double-page spread.

Each comic strip is accompanied by three sections namely understanding the text, key structures and vocabulary. In the understanding the text section there's a list of the key words used in the adjacent comic strip along with grammatical notes and contextual translations. Under the key structures sections there's a list of phrases which are difficult to comprehend along with explanations. In addition, information is provided on those phrases which are commonly used in the spoken language. The vocabulary section, on the other hand, combines the fundamental words and phrases used in each comic strip. There's also grammatical information on gender for nouns and feminine forms for adjectives and nouns. There are also notes that distinguish the different words and expressions that are used in Spain and Latin America. Words and expressions used in Spain are denoted by an asterisk, and the Latin American version is noted alongside with a label [LAm]. Furthermore, text bubbles provide notes about culture-specific situations that appear in the text.

Some other products that I recommend for Spanish language learners are Rosetta Stone Spanish. Rosetta StoneSpanish (Latin America) Level 1,2,3,4 & 5 Set with Audio Companion is pretty good if you are a visual learner like me. My only complaints are that inRosetta Stone Spanish the Spanish is rather basic and the course is also very expensive. In order to speak Spanish fluently, you must also learn lots of new words. For increasing Spanish vocabulary, I recommend Quick Study-Spanish Vocabulary Flash Cards-1000 cards You get 1,000 of these cards at an excellent price.

To speak Spanish fluently besides having a stand alone course as your base and a method to learn new Spanish words, you will also need to master conjugating Spanish verbs. The best product for that is the Verbarrator Version 1.1 (Windows Version) software. The Verbarrator software does a great job of replacing the boring Spanish verb conjugation books and makes learning Spanish verbs enough fun that you will want to use the software every day. And the more you use the tool the quicker that you will learn how to conjugate Spanish verbs and reach fluency. The Verbarrator is probably the best investment that I have made in my journey to learn Spanish because it is a product that I will use daily until I reach fluency. Unlike some learning-Spanish products such as books that you will only read one time or some Spanish courses that you will at the most review 2 or 3 times from start to finish.

The last product that I recommend for anyone who is really serious about learning Spanish is The Ultimate Spanish Review and Practice w/CD-ROM (UItimate Review & Reference Series). This Spanish grammar book covers every aspect of Spanish grammar imaginable. To get the equivalent learning-Spanish value of this one book you would have to buy 3 or 4 books in the Practice Makes Perfect series.,

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing book!
This is a bathroom book, it's easy to digest in small doses. I love this book!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Oxford Spanish Cartoon-strip Vocabulary Builder Review
This is James from James Spanish (the learning Spanish blog). If you are bored by the tedious, dull and boring text books that just lay out tables of verb conjugations and lists of vocabulary, then the Oxford Spanish Cartoon-strip Vocabulary Builder will bring a breathe of fresh air into your learning experience. The book contains a series of beautifully illustrated comic strips which use Spanish vocabulary in interesting situations that are both memorable and enjoyable to read. The cartoons provide a way to visualize how the words are used, and are a more effective way to understand the language than written examples or exercises.

The cartoons are drawn by artist Claire Bretecher, whose popular cartoons are humorous and fun, and give the book a feeling of genuine entertainment. While some other books use one or two crudely drawn and low standard illustrations, this book is full of beautiful cartoons that can be appreciated in their own right.

The comic strip format means that "lessons" are short and simple, allowing you to spend as much or as little time studying as you wish. The book features one full page of a comic strip, with vocabulary listed on the opposite page. This is one Spanish learning book that can easily be picked up and put down regardless of where you are, or how much time you have to devote to study. Whether you read one cartoon a day, or several pages at once you are bound to pick up vocabulary and ideas of general usage. The comics are organized by topic, so if you are looking to brush up on a particular area you can focus on the cartoons dealing with that subject.

While there are still word lists in the book, these are almost secondary to the cartoons and act like a dictionary to help you translate the comic strip stories.Because of this, learning the words does not seem like a chore, and because you are then seeing the words in pictures and context you are more likely to remember them.

One nice feature of this book is that is clearly marks which words or phrases are unique to Latin America or Castillian Spanish, letting you see the differences between regional variations in the Spanish language.

The level of the book is placed at upper beginner to intermediate, as it assumes a basic knowledge of key verbs and grammatical rules, and does not explain these. However, the language is not so advanced as to put off newer learners, and most students who have mastered the basics of Spanish should be able to expand on their understanding through this book.It is ideal for teenage or adult learners looking for an interesting way to build their vocabulary.

In closing my review of this product, I'd like to share with you the three Amazon products that I have found most helpful in my pursuit to learn Spanish. If you are truly serious about achieving fluency, I'd recommend getting all 3 of them if you can afford it.

1.Lights, Camera, Spanish (Book + DVD): Learn Conversational Spanish by Watching a Romantic Adventure This isactually a 90 minute movie for Spanish-language learners. It gives the option to watch the movie with subtitles but I'd recommend not using them to improve your Spanish. This "movie" also includes a workbook so that you can reinforce the Spanish vocabulary words and phrases from the film. The workbook also has lots of exercises to keep you engaged in the film. But be prepared to hear Chilean accents. Although pleasant to the ear, the accents from Chile are very different from most Latin American accents.

2. Verbarrator Version 1.1 (Windows Version) This software replaces the traditional verb conjugation books and makes learning how to conjugate Spanish verbs an interactive and fun activity. This should be a required resource for anyone who wants to improve their ability to conjugate Spanish verbs.
Especially anyone who is challenged by the drudgery of learning how to conjugate Spanish verbs and who is looking for a new way to make learning how to conjugate Spanish verbs an easy and fun activity

3. Diccionario esencial de la lengua espanola de la Real Academia Espanola (Spanish Edition) If you are really serious about speaking the language fluently, then at some point you will need to replace your Spanish-English dictionary and get a pure Spanish dictionary with both the vocabulary words and the definitionsentirely in Spanish. I use this one mainly because it was highly-recommended by a friend from Spain who teaches Spanish. According to him, this is the "standard" among university level Spanish professors.

3-0 out of 5 stars It doesn't build basic vocabulary
The vocabulary it builds is more casual vocabulary.I did not know that when I bought it.But the reason for the 3 star rating is the pictures. On many strips the pictures are the same from one scene to the next, not giving many contectual cues.It is interesting because in the preface to the book, it states that as an important feature of the book. Then it doesn't follow the features. There is at least one sequence that is almost the same from the top of the bottom all the way to the bottom of the page with just different mouths moving. What can of contetual cues are supposed to be gathered from that?

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Learning Tool
I love comic strips and I couldn't think of a better way to build my vocabulary than with cartoon strips.I spend a little time each day practicing and translating.¡Es muy fabuloso! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for developing bilingual students!
I am a first grade teacher, working with students who speak Spanish at home, but are learning English, and learning in English at school. My students are just beginning to develop their English vocabulary, so it is difficult to teach them letter sounds. If I show them a picture of cat, and say "C is for Cat," they get confused and think "C is for Gato".As a result, we have been talking a lot about "magic words," words that begin with similar sounds in English and Spanish.I can tell them "C is for Car," and even if they think "C is for Carro," they are still able to learn the correct letter/sound correspondence. This book is useful because it includes these "magic words" for each letter of the alphabet. As another reviewer commented, some of the words are sort of strange, ("W is for Washington"?).But, for the most part, this book is very useful for children who are just beginning to develop a vocabulary in English or Spanish, yet need to develop an understanding of the letter/sound correspondence in either language.I would recommend this book for any students (pre-school through 3rd grade) who need to develop literacy skills in English, but have a stronger Spanish vocabulary (or vice versa).

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This is a great book for teaching both English and Spanish alphabet. The did a good job at selecting matching pictures to the letters in both languages. There are a couple that just could have been better.Like the letter "w" the image is of a quarter and the word is "washington".A bit confusing. So I just tell my son that its a president George Washington on the quarter. Also, it omitted the "rr".Otherwise the book is great. I would definitely buy it again.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you want to teach your child Spanish...
I have purchased several Spanish books on Amazon and as always make many of my purchases based on the reviews of those who have gone before me. My daughter is trying to teach my granddaughter how to speak Spanish and she loved this book. Of course she loved sucking on the corners too but it was colorful, well planned out and joyful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Attractive Book
This is a colorful book, and my 4-year-old daughter likes it a lot.She carefully repeats the Spanish words after me.The only draw-back is that there is no pronounciation guide, so the grown-up needs to know their Spanish alphabet already.

1-0 out of 5 stars W is for Washington?
Before I begin my critique, I must say that my three kids have all enjoyed hearing this book at the appropriate age. The illustrations, by Michele Noiset, are bright, clear, fun, and functional. Most of the items depicted in this ABC book are interesting and/or familiar to young children (train, ocean, juice).

BUT there are inherent difficulties in portraying ABC-linked items in English and Spanish. What do I mean? Well, Spanish has very few, if any, words that begin with "W". So, in this book, the "W" page has a 1978 George Washington quarter for its illustration. What USEFUL word do our aspiring bilinguists learn from this page? "Washington". Similarly, "Y" is for "yo-yo" in both languages, and 'R' is for "robot". As far as I'm concerned, this is "lame/lamé".

The next difficulty (closely related to the first) is that español has three more "letters" than English has: "ch" ("chay), "ll" ("el-yay"), and "ñ" ("en-nyay"). Fact is, NO English-only words begin with these "letters". That means that this book gives us "chimpanzee" (spelled identically in both languages), "llama" (fine, but there's no pronunciation guide to distinguish between the two), and "ñandu", which the authors and editors had to acquiesce, has no English equivalent. (It's a an emu-sort-of thing.)

I wouldn't bother with this book unless you get it practically free. There are many better ABC books and there are many better (i.e. more educational) English-Spanish/español/inglés books on the market. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Learning Spanish By Reading, Excellent Way to Learn Spanish
Easy Spanish Reader, authored by William Tardy, is an exceptional language learning tool containing simple Spanish stories, a pertinent glossary of words and meanings, and artistic illustrations which capture the eye, thereby allowing readers to deduct the subject matter of the text. The prompting review questions located at each passage's conclusion evaluate and refresh the student's mind on the content and context of the passage, while deepening the reader's knowledge in verb conjugation, tenses, and Spanish culture.

Touching on familiar themes such as work, school, religion, family, and leisure, Easy Spanish Reader furnishes the student with pertinent information applicable to each sector, so that language learning and development become all-rounded and holistic. The crossword puzzle is another effective method where this Easy Spanish Reader book makes learning more enjoyable. Students can take advantage of the lessons taught and have fun with words. The miniature dictionary annexed at the end of the book readily assists the student in understanding the Spanish subject. Easy Spanish Reader's uncomplicated beginning progresses into more challenging passages and concepts as the student advances and gains more confidence.

An artillery of exercises and prompting questions exert and compel the student to diligently use the reading resources to come up with the correct solutions. A helpful answer key is also available as an aid in deciphering the answers to taxing questions. Subsectioned into three parts, this book treats separately modern Spanish, elements of Spanish history, and social life. This book achieves its goal of simplifying and transferring basic Spanish proficiency skills by the chief avenues of language learning: writing, reading, speaking, and visuals.

Some other products that I recommend for Spanish language learners are Rosetta Stone Spanish. Rosetta StoneSpanish (Latin America) Level 1,2,3,4 & 5 Set with Audio Companion. Rather expensive but excellent for the visual learner like myself and great for a person who has never studied any Spanish before. In order to speak Spanish fluently, you must also learn lots of new words.

A resource that highly recommend for adding new words to your Spanish vocabulary isQuick Study-Spanish Vocabulary Flash Cards-1000 cards It is a tremendous bargain for the price since you get 1,000 of these cards.

For learning how to conjugate Spanish verbs, the best product is the Verbarrator Version 1.1 (Windows Version) software. This Verbarrator actually replaces the boring Spanish verb conjugation books and makes learning how to conjugate Spanish verbs one of the most fun parts of learning Spanish. And, of course, the more you use the tool the quicker that you will learn how to conjugate Spanish verbs and reach fluency. It is one of the best investments you can make in your learning-Spanish studies. Another feature that I like about this interactive software is that it really helped improve my pronunciation.

The last product that I recommend for anyone who is really serious about learning Spanish is The Ultimate Spanish Review and Practice w/CD-ROM (UItimate Review & Reference Series). This Spanish grammar book covers every aspect of Spanish grammar imaginable. To get the equivalent learning-Spanish value of this one book you would have to buy 3 or 4 books in the Practice Makes Perfect series.

5-0 out of 5 stars I recommend this seller
I received a product that I was not satisfied. When I contacted this seller,I got a quick response. He was very polite and he refunded my full money. I recommend this seller because he is so serious and very responsible. Thank you. I give 5 stars this seller.

5-0 out of 5 stars really good and very interesting topics.
I would say this book is best suited for people leaving beginner and becoming intermediate level of experience, i would say its great for advanced users as well. This book has interesting subjects, and easy level of reading while giving definitions of some words. At the end of each short chapter there are questions on the content that you just read.Im very happy and very impressed with this book.Unlike much of spanish learning guides, where after a short time you find yourself becoming bored and your mind drifts off to think of other things besides what your trying to learn, i found this book to be very interesting and hard to put down.

Great book to anyone in the intermediate and above levels.I think you will also be quite pleased.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
I am an intermediate/advanced student in spanish. This book is an excellent review for beginners to advanced. Interesting story keeps your focus and questions after each chapter are terrific for review. I would recommend this book to anyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Reader
This book is well organized and well-thought. The stories don't get too old as time goes by. The book is already 10 years old, but remains updated. Agood choice for novice reader. It would have helped if the book was accompanied by an audio CD. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For My Baby
I purchased this book and others for my baby who is only 15 months. They are hardcover and basic. My child is already associating things. She is also learning spanish very easily.Thank you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Numbers
As a child, the Spanish language was not something that I was familiar with. Even so, I still knew how to count up to 10 and found excitement in my ability to repeat the numbers to my friends. This "Numbers" book is a terrific tool to use to learn Spanish numbers. The pictures of animals increase as the numbers do and is a great way for children to remember the numbers as associated with a specific animal. The board feature of the book has allowed it to last even after my paperback books have fallen apart. I would recommend this book to anyone who desires to learn how to count in both Spanish and English. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It's the best Spanish book ever.
The book is a fantastic and fun book to read. It will help others who are learning Spanish and it helps me too. Spanish is one of my most favorite languages.
My favorite pages are 44-45. Two other of my favorite pages are 36-37.This book is a interesting and easy way to learn Spanish.I love it!
Johnny, age 10.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Pictures, interesting book
I purchased this book for my three year old.She loves the pictures and we play find-it type games with them (ala - Waldo). The only real downfall is that while the Spanish words for many of the items in the picture are around the edges of each page, no pronunciation is included.I'm sure that's no big deal for parents who already speak Spanish, but unfortunately, I cannot read the words to my daughter since I don't know the Spanish rules for pronunciation.Sure, you can go to the internet and after typing in the page number and going through several clicks, hear a single sound clip of the word. That doesn't help me at bedtime, though.I would love to see a phonetic pronunciation under each word. Then, we'd be set!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun, Friendly, and Factual
Tired of boring and bland spanish tools? This book is bursting with vivid, whimsical, illustrations depicting everyday life with humor and clarity that will attract even beginning adult students. The apealing story type pictures not only define spanish words, but they also promote spanish interaction between reader and child or student with student. On "la cocina" page, a father washes dises amidst a swirling pandemonium of dropping dishes, spilt juice, and a todler with a pot on his head. A teacher or parent could easily springboard off of this illustration to begin to form whole sentences based on the action in the picture.

This intriguing book is sure to be a winner with you and children alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learning Spanish for a missions trip
This book really helped me work on my pronunciation and vocabulary for a mission trip I took to Mexico in early January.I plan on passing it on to my daughter as she gets older...

3-0 out of 5 stars Not recommended as one's primary resource to learn Spanish
There are pictures with the corresponding Spanish definition but the literal English translation is not included.I find this to be a bit challenging for some of the items as there can be multiple English words referring to a single object and without the exact English translation you aren't sure. For example, there is a picture of a 3 drawer dresser defined as comoda. In English this could be nightstand, dresser, bureau...Also some of the pictures are difficult to distinguish. One page has a picture of a sheet and of a pillow and they look almost identical. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome program!
I've been struggling to become more fluent in Spanish for several years. It wasn't until I had a patient in nursing school who spoke nothing but Spanish that I knew I needed to try harder! I've fallen in love with this product! Although I'm not very far yet (thanks to still being in nursing school) the first chapter has already improved my pronunciation, as well as taught me basic commands that will be extremely helpful when working with Spanish-speaking patients! This book comes with three CDs that you can play in your car or home stereo along with a test book that allows you to prove what you've learned! 5-0 out of 5 stars Really works
I used these flash cards with my son while he was a baby and didn't know if he'd get anything out of it.I actually learned the signs and spanish and reviewed them with him, he was doing some of the signs at 9 mos. and spanish words before the age of 2.I didn't force him to sit with me to look at them.I eventually left them in a spot that he could get them out himself to look at and he does.

1-0 out of 5 stars Who knew?Caricatures don't tell the sign...
3 weeks to receive this product by regular mail.Once I notified Amazon, however, it was on my doorstep in two days. The package was securely wrapped - opening and was sent to lost and re-mailed from the USPS.Once I opened the box, packaged in a nice easy to store and access box - How disappointing! These flash cards "...are designed to make it quick and easy for you and your family to expand your signing vocabulary."Sorry, the caricatures of the words just don't get it!"Bath" sign - a baby with its hand raised, a duck and three little lines around them is supposed to mean bath time. What is the subject here?kid, duck, bubbles? How about a picture of a bathtub and water running... "Mommy" sign - a woman holding a baby in her arms. What's the subject?the woman or the baby? The "help" sign is a caricature of a mischievous little girl pulling a pants leg and pointing to a bottle on a shelf.Terrible!A waste of money. Now the backs of the cards are very well done, showing you how to illustrate the sign... but only good for the teacher.Sign2Me has got to do better than this to sell this product!

5-0 out of 5 stars Favorite product for signing games/ card index
I often use the Sign2Me flash card series for games we play at home and in the baby sign language classes I teach in Boiling Springs, SC.The cards have adorable pictures on the front for your child to see and associate with the sign you show them (which you can clearly view on the back of the card). The word for the sign is also shown in English and Spanish on the front of the card, so you have the 3 most popular languages in the US and Canada all on one card! The back of the card box shows an index of the signs contained in the box.
Here's an example of one of the games we enjoy playing. There are 5 flash card sets within the series. Each set has a different color for the box/cards.I have a soft dice with a different color on each side, and the colors coordinate with the colors on the flash cards.I lay the flash cards out on the floor in piles, all red in one pile, all blue in another, etc.The child (or mom helping the child) rolls the dice then chooses a card according to the color the dice landed on.We make the sign for that color, then we make the sign that's on that card. This color dice would be very easy to make, or just take a stack of index cards and with the different colors represented by the flash cards, use a crayon to make a 'color blob' on each card. Then have your child choose a card from the index card stack, followed by the coordinating flash card.Easy, fun, and great for teaching colors and signs. This is just one of many games you can use to have fun learning and practicing signs!Be creative and enjoy!

I hope it's ok to do this, but one mom expressed in her review that she wished she could have seen a list of cards that comes with each flash card set.So, here you go...

4-0 out of 5 stars Friend loves it
I bought this for a friend from Mexico who is learning English and trying to get a GED. She says this has been very helpful to her.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's a thick book because it has a lot of words, but it's not very durable.
This thick book (about 1360 pages) is full of many Spanish and English words from each language. The first half consists of Spanish words with the English equivalents, and the second half is English words with the Spanish words that mean the same thing. Some basic grammar tools and the alphabets for each language are also included in the book. Now, there are no definitions for the words, just the translations for the other language. However, after using this almost every day for an entire year, the book wore out very quickly. The cover broke and the book fell apart, and even after taping it back together, it fell apart again. The bottom line is that although it is very good for looking up words for either language, it falls apart rather easily and isn't durable at all. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars PC gone overboard
I can't believe they changed the story to make it PC.The wolf doesn't try to eat the grandma or the girl, there is no hunter to come save them. The wolf just runs away ashamed when the girl finds out hes's not the grand ma?So what is the moral of the story supposed to be?

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent beginner's Spanish book
When my wife and I set off to study Spanish in Guatemala several years ago, we decided to to go the "immersion" route (i.e. NO ENGLISH, 5 hours a day of 1-on-1 instruction, live with native families).Since we knew zero (nada!) Spanish, we set off to our local Borders, and luckily found (along with 501 Spanish Verbs), this extremely helpful (and fun) book.I enjoyed this book so much that before we even left for Guatemala, I had read through probably one-third of it, so I wasn't TOTALLY clueless when I arrived in Antigua.Fun dialogues of increasing difficulty, pronunciation guides, grammar and usage, vocabulary lists, quizzes, and cultural notes -- they're all here, laid out in a user-friendly way.If you want to learn Spanish (which is not a bad idea these days, since Spanish is probably the fastest growing language -- of the major spoken languages -- in the world), this is as good a start as any...

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent beginner's Spanish course
I had never spoken a word of Spanish (okay, except 'si') before taking up this course, and two months and 25 lessons later I could speak better than friends who had taken Spanish all three years in H.S.This is anexcellent, practical course that emphasizes conversation skills.I do wishthere were more comprehension drills, as I still have lots of troubleunderstanding anything on Spanish TV here in New York. But without a doubtthis is the best Spanish course I have come across. For example, much, much better than Barron's "foreign service institute" courses. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars works well
This product is MUCH better than Rosetta Stone and much more affordable. I am speaking spanish easily and understand the grammar more than I ever had in the past.

The pronounciation is not quite on in parts, but I don't think it's a game changer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great value for money
Its quite effective. The methodology used where the host creates an interactive learning ambience by including two students in the recording is a departure from the normal monotonus way of repeating the same information again and again to the listener as is done in most of the other audio programs available in the market. The tone of the teacher's voice is almost hipnotic and it makes you go in a kind of a trance where you become receptive to every thing taught at a sub councious level.
The only thing mising that I would like to state is that the program is not very extensive and elaborate and learning a new language is like diving into a vast ocean of knowledge and achieving that just with the help of 10 cd set is just not possible. It can have you conected and build a foundation but is in no way a comprehensive approach for an extensive language learning.

5-0 out of 5 stars Michael Thomas--Spanish for Beginners
You should have minimal familiarity with the language. The program teaches pronunciation, present, future and past tenses, allowing time for thinking of the answer before hearing it. Material for converting English words to Spanish is helpful. I can not speak Spanish after the course, but it is a good review and consolidation program.

5-0 out of 5 stars Michel Thomas Method Spanish For Beginners Review by James
This is James from James Spanish (the learning Spanish blog). Michel Thomas is renowned for being one of the most successful and influential language teachers in the world. His method has helped thousands of people master a new language, and his courses are known for their high quality and in depth coverage of a language.

Key to the Michel Thomas method is that learning should be natural and intuitive, and should not rely on artificial exercises such as drills in order for you to remember words. You do, however, have to repeat each word or phrase as it is presented, so while this audio course is excellent for while you are in your own car,you won't want to try to listen to it at work or in a public place where talking to yourself could draw some strange looks!

Designed for beginners, this course covers basic sentence structure and grammar as well as some essential vocabulary. It provides a good foundation of the Spanish language in just a few hours, and best of all the relaxed teaching method means that you will be speaking with confidence and in a relaxed manner, rather than feeling nervous as you fumble for words. This confidence is invaluable when it comes to practicing your Spanish and will help immensely when you move on to more advanced Spanish language learning.

As with most Michel Thomas courses, you are guided through the lesson along with two other students.Often, one student is heard to struggle with a particular word or phrase, while the other completes it easily. In this way you never feel as though you are alone or not keeping up.It also allows you to learn from their mistakes and not feel frustrating by your own.Rather than providing a set phrase and asking you to repeat it,the lessons provide the basic building blocks and you are then challenged to put them together in a sentence. This kind of independent learning encourages your brain to really digest and use the information given rather than just memorize it to be repeated.

Correct pronunciation is also stressed in this course, with a large amount of time dedicated to making sure you are pronouncing the words with just the right emphasis or sound to help you sound more like a native speaker.

All in all, this is one of the best audio courses for beginner Spanish students, and offers a solid platform on which to grow conversational skills.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally! Something Worth My Time and Money!
God bless this author! I have tried so many things to learn Mexican-Spanish...and most were awful. They would teach European Spanish or Castillian or whatever, but NOT conversational Spanish in a way that I could almost immediately pick up and use.
The book and the cd's are easy, sensible and humorous with phrases and words that people need in real life.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Anna Rivera's Review of Spanish for Gringos
This is Anna Rivera, editor of the Learning Spanish Products Reviews site and author of Anna Rivera's 1000 Plus Most Powerful Spanish Words (Spanish Edition) and Anna Rivera's 800 Plus Most Powerful Spanish Phrases (Spanish Edition).

Spanish for Gringos with Compact Disks is published by Barron's Educational Series and comes with a 192 page book and two CDs.Its focus is on teaching beginners to speak conversational Spanish competently rather than on teaching perfect textbook grammar.

The CDs are a new feature from previous editions and add a lot to the learning experience since they reinforce the existing material and allow you to study in your car, but the entire book isn't translated which was a little bit of a disappointment.

Spanish for Gringos moves at a brisk pace and avoids trudging through obscure grammar concepts.Only the most immediate and useful concepts are taught which makes it a great starter program, but less than comprehensive. However, students who want to become fluent in Spanish will still need to use a good Spanish audio course with this product.
One of my personal students has used this products and he enjoyed it very much and said that it was a good value.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!
This is a great way to get the basics to get by in Spanish speaking countries.I had studied an earlier version several years ago and was pleased to find that this is still available, since I badly needed to relearn much of what I had forgotten. Much better now with the added benefit of 3 CDs.I will soon be purchasing Volume 2.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spanish for Gringos
This book is one of the best how-to books on Spanish that I have ever used.
The audio CD's are top-notch. The author speaks slowly so that one can
repeat the lines spoken easily. I give it a 5-star rating! A great help
for beginners. Dave ... Read more
