Product Description
Bridging the gap between child development and strategies for inclusion, this volume is designed to help early childhood practitioners and pre-service teachers feel better equipped to meet the needs of all the children in their early childhood setting. Each chapter introduces a child (ages from birth to eight years of age) with one or more special need, including autism, cerebral palsy, Turner Syndrome, ADHD, emotional/behavioural disorders, IDEA, apraxia, Down Syndrome, giftedness, and juvenile diabetes. Advocating a holistic view of working with children, each profile includes: a description of the child; an interview with a family member or early childhood professional describing essential facts and historical incidents in the child's life; an epilogue updating the status of the child; information for educators about the special need covered in the profile; hints for success - teaching strategies for working with children in inclusive classrooms; discussion questions for the classroom; resources for parents and teachers; and an appendix with guidelines for an IEP (Individualized Education Program). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Children with Special Needs; Lessons for Early Childhood Pro
I found this book to be excellant. It follows the early childhood experience of a number of children with different special needs. It covers interviews from parents, educators, and family members.I felt the book really emphasizes the idea that these are, first and foremost, children. They need the same experiences as many "typical" developing children. It also hits hard on the subject of the parental involvement and how important it is in the "BIG PICTURE".I would recommend this book for anyone working with children, preschool teachers, elementary teachers, and childcare providers alike. It is an "Easy Read" full of great and useful information> ... This new bookis all about creating that collaboration, maintaining it, and usingit to help children who have disabilities reach their personal educationalpotential. The authors take a developmental approach to their subject, focusing on the uniqueness of each family and each child from infancy, through the primary grades, to middle school, high school, and adulthood.Throughout the book, the “voices” of real parents lend authenticity to the material; and the essential role of the family in the education of its children is seen as of paramount importance. 4-0 out of 5 stars More for teachers than parents
This is a great book, but I would like to see more specific solutions for children with special needs in the home as part of love and logic program. As a mom to a child on the autistic spectrum I would like some more advice about applying the ideas to my son.

I did loan the book to my sons teacher who really found it useful

3-0 out of 5 stars With Teachers in Mind
I am a new foster mom with a 5 year old special needs boy.I have used the Love and Logic way of parenting for years on my bio kids with WONDERFUL success!!I purchase this book in hope of some different words of wisdom for parenting our special little guy.I found that this book does have lots of pearls of wisdom, but it is primarily directed to teachers/school staff with disturbed kids. As with every L&L books, it was not a waste of time reading, just not what I expected. There is wonderful ideas and tactics to deal with kids that are "frequent flyers" to the principals office, can't seem to control their behaviors, middle finger problems, behavior IEP's that actually provide results. The book covers the inportance of not being the "I'm the adult, therefore you will respect me" attitudes and the futility of it, and teaches you further how to have the kids buy into the importance of THEM controlling their own behavior.
I feel that this book would best serve our wonderful teachers and administrators (especially administrators) after reading "Teaching with Love and Logic".It sure wouldn't hurt to send to a friend who has the belief that THEIR kid is wonderful, its the whole school is the problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love and Logic is good for "special" kids, too.
Mr. Funk uses the principles of Love and Logic and applies them to working with special needs kids.Lots of stories illustrate his points. This book answered many of my questions about how Love and Logic works with students who are cognitive and behavior impaired.

This book has a great philosophy behind it and is very helpful for both parents and educators.
