Product Description
The third edition of Theory of Simple Liquids is an updated, advanced, but self-contained introduction to the principles of liquid-state theory. It presents the modern, molecular theory of the structural, thermodynamic interfacial and dynamical properties of the liquid phase of materials constituted of atoms, small molecules or ions. This book leans on concepts and methods form classical Statistical Mechanics in which theoretical predictions are systematically compared with experimental data and results from numerical simulations.

The overall layout of the book is similar to that of the previous two editions however, there are considerable changes in emphasis and several key additions including:

.up-to-date presentation of modern theories of liquid-vapour coexistence and criticality
.areas of considerable present and future interest such as super-cooled liquids and the glass transition
.the area of liquid metals, which has grown into a mature subject area, now presented as part of the chapter ionic liquids

.Provides cutting-edge research in the principles of liquid-state theory
.Includes frequent comparisons of theoretical predictions with experimental and simulation data
.Suitable for researchers and post-graduates in the field of condensed matter science (Physics, Chemistry, Material Science), biophysics as well as those in the oil industry ... Read more

Product Description
Many applications today require the Fourier-transform (FT) spectrometer to perform close to its limitations, such as taking many quantitative measurements in the visible and in the near infrared wavelength regions. In such cases, the instrument should not be considered as a perfect 'black box.' Knowing where the limitations of performance arise and which components must be improved are crucial to obtaining repeatable and accurate results. One of the objectives of this book is to help the user identify the instrument's bottleneck.

Product Description

To push MOSFETs to their scaling limits and to explore devices that may complement or even replace them at molecular scale, a clear understanding of device physics at nanometer scale is necessary. Nanoscale Transistors provides a description on the recent development of theory, modeling, and simulation of nanotransistors for electrical engineers, physicists, and chemists working on nanoscale devices. Simple physical pictures and semi-analytical models, which were validated by detailed numerical simulations, are provided for both evolutionary and revolutionary nanotransistors. After basic concepts are reviewed, the text summarizes the essentials of traditional semiconductor devices, digital circuits, and systems to supply a baseline against which new devices can be assessed. A nontraditional view of the MOSFET using concepts that are valid at nanoscale is developed and then applied to nanotube FET as an example of how to extend the concepts to revolutionary nanotransistors. This practical guide then explore the limits of devices by discussing conduction in single molecules

2-0 out of 5 stars Limited Audience
This book gets two stars because I estimate 2 out of 5 readers attracted to this title will find what they want. The authors deliberately limit the target audience to those that have mastered S. Datta's two books: "Electronic Conduction in Mesoscopic Systems" and "Quantum Transport: Atom to Transistor". In addition, the readers should have assembled a small library of journal articles for "details", particularly those up to 2003 with author Lundstrom as participating author. However, the authors do relent briefly in Chapter 2, which is an undergraduate lecture on MOSFETs and bipolar devices.
The audience is further limited to those that expect band theory to apply to these devices, and an effective mass approximation to band theory at that. Devices tend to be "thermal reservoirs" connected by geometrically ideal bars that confine the electrons. A third "gate" electrode shifts the density of states up or down with the gate voltage. An idealized transmission coefficient treats scattering.
If you are in the target audience you'll be happy with this book. If you want a book that presents theoretical and numerical detail, doesn't require an ancillary library of journal papers, and deals with real boundary dependencies, this book is not it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for background and laboratory set-up
This book gave good background on the technique and fundamentals of SERS.It really is a practical approach for how to add SERS into a lab to use in different experimental set-ups.However, there is no discussion on TERS, which is a large part of modern Raman.

3-0 out of 5 stars Up to date, but weak
The big strength of this book is that it's a good single-volume coverage of the current technology involved in the method, including ultrafast laser systems for CARS etc.The chapter that surveys applications is also fairly well-done.The coverage does not provide enough information to make useful conclusions on choice of specific equipment, or even questions such as "would I be better served with visible-light excitation and a good CCD, or a FT instrument?"

The rest of it... well. It's simply not very well written - organization is poor, even within a given paragraph.Information is repeated multiple times; I saw the same sentence (about the need to pick a good baseline when doing quantitative work) on three consecutive pages - and in no case do they provide a good example of a well-chosen baseline. They mention apodization of FT spectra, but they do not explain or define it.They talk about work on standardizing instruments (esp. for quantitative/intensity purposes), but they wander back and forth between "it's very seldom done" and "it's not been studied much" and "it's been satisfactorily addressed" and "it's very nearly a solved problem".(As another example, there's a figure showing FT-Raman spectra of indene at several different excitation powers; the text claims that there's a non-linear power dependence for the relative peak intensities, but the figure suggests the opposite.)

Sentence fragments are common, and at least two figures have typos. Was there a proof-reader?

Paragraphs also contradict each other:They say that "the SMOOTH function" (yes, apparently there's only the one) is a useful tool for bringing out weak features; that it's extremely dangerous because it obscures detail; that it's an excellent way to remove noise. On the basis of those paragraphs, the reader is left with very little indication of whether "the SMOOTH function" should be used or not. They (attempt to) cover the relevant theory, but again, it's poorly arranged and winds up obscuring more than it explains.

As a review of Raman since 2000 (McCreery's book), it's somewhat useful. They do provide extensive references, so it's perhaps an effective set of pointers on where to start reading.

It is not "the perfect book on Raman spectroscopy"; it is not even a very good one.In particular, I cannot see it useful as an introduction to Raman.(I'd hoped to suggest it as a supplement to a class I'm teaching in the fall; I'm glad I read it before giving it to students!)Their idea for the book was good; perhaps a second edition will be more useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Proabably The Most Concise and Basic Information Needed By Everyone
I have searched for the perfect book on Raman spectroscopy which would be short and complete. After looking high and low, I must recommend this text to everyone who want an explanation detail by detail. The concepts are handled quite nicely so that anyone with basic physics and chemistry understanding will comprehend. Also, there are plenty of examples of compounds which makes analysis easier to identify different bonds and vibration modes.Keep this handy with you and treasure it forever. This one is a keeper. ... KEY FEATURES:
-Latest research on molecular spectroscopy
-Solved problems included in every chapter
-Author has 40 years teaching experience.

ABOUT THE BOOK:
Spectroscopy in this book has been made easier and attractive by adopting a non-mathematical pictorial path. The essential feature of this approach involves use of visual images at the molecular level. Further, to keep the reader involved, every chapter has a large number of solved problems. This approach brings molecular spectroscopy within the comprehension of the average reader. Application of molecular spectroscopy in determining molecular structure and the study of intermolecular interactions have also been discussed.

A chapter on the applications of molecular spectroscopy has been prepared from the latest research work where molecular spectroscopy has been used as a tool to the research problems. This will give an idea as to how wide and divergent spectroscopy has its applications. Again, the approach intends to develop reasoning ability to the maximum.

4-0 out of 5 stars Many Useful and Authoritative Chapters
This is a multiauthored volume, which generally creates the expectation that it will be more disjointed and uneven in depth than most single-author books. However, the advantage of multi-author books, when done well, is that the authors usually make fewer errors and present their material as experienced practitioners. This book is done well - and I found several chapters useful in preparing a set of lecture notes in a "Physical Methods" course for inorganic chemists. The depth of the chapters is, as I've indicated, uneven.Chapter 1 (Ligand Field Theory...), for example, is beyond the level of most first-year chemistry graduate students, but will be a useful reference for more advanced students and seasoned investigators. Most of chapters 2, 3 and 4 (EPR, Mössbauer, and polarized electronic spectroscopies) and more accessible and very appropriate for graduate student beginners.I've not had occasion to study the remaining chapters (luminescence, laser, IR, Raman, resonance-Raman, photoelectron, X-ray absorption & EXAFS spectroscopies & Electronic Structure calculations) as closely, but most seem to be very well done.

One major complaint - with both the hardcover and paperback editions: the binding is GLUE!I borrowed a copy of this book from a colleague and a page fell out while scanning a figure for a class!Embarrassing and Annoying! There is no excuse for Wiley to produce books that aren't cheap so cheaply! ... Product Description
This book provides an introduction to optical activity (circular dichroism, CD) and optical anisotropy (linear dichroism, LD) as techniques for the study of molecular structure and interactions between molecules in solution. It starts by describing the basic principles and practices in a way that does not require an understanding of advanced mathematics or quantum mechanics. The book covers the use of the techniques for molecules of both low and high molecular weight but particular emphasis is placed on proteins and nucleic acids.

The early chapters focus on how to use the techniques to study the structure and function of biomacromolecules. The central chapters cover the various applications of CD and LD including: protein secondary structure elucidation; analysis of the formation and rearrangements of fibrous proteins and membrane proteins; identification of the absolute configuration of small molecules; determination of the orientation of small molecules in anisotropic media and assignment of transition moment directions, and investigation of binding strengths and geometries of ligand-macromolecule complexes. The advantages of combined CD/LD studies are also outlined with examples of DNA/drug complexes and protein insertion into membranes. The level of the subject matter gradually increases as the book proceeds, concluding with quantum mechanical derivations of the CD equations used in the middle chapters.

The use of linearly polarized light is often seen as a rather exotic method intended only for experienced spectroscopists. This book demonstrates that it is an approach that may be used by students and scientists from graduate level onwards. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Technicals, be prepared to be bored
If I could I would give it 3.5 stars.First, it is an absolutely great book for technical aspects of proton NMR, the techniques described are still in full use to day, and has changed little if any from the date this book is written.Anyone who does NMR frequently is likely to own this book.As far as a reference book is a must for anyone serious about NMR.And just like a reference book it is an absolute snooze fest.Good bed time reading, if one wanted to dream about coupling.

This is not a book for beginners, it is highly technical, highly mathematically driven, and full of jargon.

Product Description
This book provides a straightforward introduction to the spectroscopy of diatomic molecules and is written at the level of intermediate undergraduate courses in physical chemistry and chemical physics. Following a general introduction to the subject, the second chapter lays out the essential quantum mechanical tools required to understand spectroscopy. Very little previous knowledge is assumed; mathematics is kept to a minimum, the treatment being only semi-quantitative. The following chapter uses this quantum mechanical framework to establish the selection rules which govern spectroscopic transitions. Chapters 4 - 7 describe the various branches of spectroscopy covered by the book; rotational, rotational - vibrational, Raman, and electronic spectroscopy. Quantum mechanics is used to derive formulae for the various energy levels involved and for the relative intensities of different types of transition. From these, the appearances of the different types of spectra are derived. The molecular parameters on which these spectra depend are defined and the structural information which can be derived from these is discussed. ... Read more

These techniques are based on the principles of the spatial Fourier spectroscopy of the light beam reflected from a prism-coupling device with the tunnel excitation of guided lightmodes in thin-film structures. Measurement techniques of determination of the absorption coefficient, refractive index and thickness of the dielectric, semiconductor or metallic films are considered.
This book is highly recommended for specialists in the fields of integrated and thin film optics and for graduated students in related specialties.

· There are new techniques of measurement of thin-film parameters stated ... Read more

Product Description

With its extreme accuracy and reasonable computational efficiency, the linearized augmented plane wave (LAPW) method has emerged as the standard by which density functional calculations for transition metal and rare-earth containing materials are judged. The second edition of Planewaves, Pseudopotentials and the LAPW Method presents an updated,  thorough and self-contained exposition of the first principles methods for calculating properties of solids, in particular the "LAPW" method and will make connections between this method and planewave pseudopotential approaches.

Theory is discussed, but the emphasis is on how practical implementation proceeds. In addition, the author suggests future directions for adapting the LAPW method to simulations of complex materials requiring large unit cells. He does this by elucidating the connections between the LAPW method and planewave pseudopotential approaches and by showing how Car-Parrinello type algorithms can be adapted to the LAPW method.

The new edition contains  new sections on developments over the last 10 years, including for example the LDA+U method, non-collinear magnetism and the APW+LO method.
