Product Description

When Congress passed Title IX of the Civil Rights Act in 1972, they seemed to be doing something laudable and also long overdue-prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sex in America's schools. But thirty years later, a law designed to guarantee equal opportunity has become the most explicit, government-enforced quota regime in America, putting boys and men on the losing side of a battle for athletic and educational opportunity. A former athlete herself, Jessica Gavora interviewed dozens of leading college athletes, educators and legal experts for this provocative, yet carefully researched book. She argues that the 1999 World Cup victory of the U.S. Women's Soccer team, for instance, widely seen as a Title IX triumph, was actually the result of a far more profound social revolution that has changed America's mind about sexual roles and female destiny. If anything, Title IX has had a destructive overall effect on all college athletes by killing opportunities to compete. Gavora shows how Title IX sports quotas have caused chaos at schools like Brown University and led directly to the cancellation of some of the most prestigious men's programs in the country-among them Providence College's baseball team, Princeton's wrestling team and the men's swimming and diving program that produced several Olympic champions. But if Title IX has tilted the college playing field, Gavora suggests that its greatest impact on American social life may still lie ahead as the federal bureaucrats, activist judges, and radical feminists who have shaped the statute's interpretation now seek to expand its reach into sexual harassment and other areas of education where boys and girls have to conform to their notion of "gender equity." "Tilting the Playing Field" is a trenchant insider's look at how one law-and its unintended consequences--has affected our view of sports, sex, and schools.
Amazon.com Review
In the tradition of Who Stole Feminism? and Christina Hoff Sommers, Jessica Gavora offers a devastating account of feminism gone haywire. For more than a generation, liberal women's groups have used a piece of federal civil rights legislation called Title IX to expand opportunities for women to play sports in college. In a classic case of unintended consequences, however, they've wrought enormous damage on men's sports programs. The cost of complying with Title IX has led to the abolition of hundreds of men's sports programs, including some heralded ones. In 1993, for instance, UCLA dropped its men's swimming and diving teams, which had produced 16 Olympic gold medalists. This is all done in the name of sexual "proportionality"--the supposed iniquity of men playing sports more than women. Gavora is a good writer and a perceptive critic who notes an exquisite irony: "Whereas in every other area of life, from the military to the boardroom to the bedroom, women's rights activists have insisted that women be allowed to compete in the same arena with men, Title IX activists have worked in athletics to protect women's special status.... On this narrow score, difference is accepted." Gavora also points out that Title IX radicalism won't halt at the edge of the sporting field; it's now stepping into new areas, including school harassment policies, student testing, and math and science achievement--anywhere males and females don't conform to feminist expectations of gender equity. Tilting the Playing Field is an excellent book on an important subject, and will appeal to right-leaning readers who dissent from feminist orthodoxy. --John Miller ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Important
Very well researched and presented material.Gavora has done a good job of calling out the critical issues surrounding Title IX.While the impact on athletic programs is very troubling I'm even more concerned with the political correctness going on concerning testing results and the push of the Obama Administration into the sciences.

I hope Jessica will give us an update to this fine book in the near future.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting...but so what?
Full disclosure:I know the author personally and professionally.

Tilting the Playing Field: Schools, Sports, Sex and Title IX by Jessica Gavora is exceptionally well written and researched. One could do worse than read this book to get an overview of what is going on with Title IX and its effect on school funded sports.

In all honesty, I have little interest or background in this subject. However, since I knew the author and had been impressed by some of her writing and verbal arguments on other subjects; decided to invest some time in learning about this hot button issue.

Even if all of Ms Gavora's facts and arguments are spot on, it is difficult for me to see why anyone would care about publicly funded sports in high school and college. When I attended college at the University of Oklahoma, that institution was a hot bed of out of control athletes.Cutting some funding and forcing these folks to compete in student funded and ran intramural activities seems like it would have been an improvement.Indeed, many of the athletes I met or observed in college had no business being in college. When I hear that certain universities have an 80% or 90% graduation rate among athletes, I know that someone is cooking the books. The graduation among ALL students at a typical state university normally hovers around 50% of any incoming freshman class.

Moreover, if one looks at the military academies, it is easy to make the argument that the attempt to develop competitive football and basketball teams has lowered standards academically and professionally. The recent scandals at the Naval Academy have all largely involved those on athletic scholarships.Fundamentally, one must ask if student funded and student led intramural sports are more effective at developing leadership and management skills than the current system.

Since I feel that the current system is so inherently flawed, the fact that Title IX is badly "tilting" it in an unnatural state is not an issue, in my humble opinion, for concern.

Regardless, this book is extremely well researched and written. While I disagree with the thesis of this book, I would gladly read another book by the same author just to enjoy her academic rigor and beautiful writing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spreading the Truth!!!!
This book is fantastic!A real page turner.Other books on Title IX are very dense and technical.Gavora provides all the history of Title IX in an entertaining and fascinating manner, along with great case studies of what the legistlation has done.Anyone interested in Title IX should read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
This is the best analysis you'll find on this important topic. It's a great place to start for anyone who wants to learn more about Title IX.

1-0 out of 5 stars Way off base...Gavora misses facts
In this book, Gavora continues to perpetuate the myth that Title IX is responsible for the elimination of men's sports.Nevermind the fact that nowhere in Title IX does it say cut men's teams and create women's teams. However, that is what Gavora insinuates which is just wrong. It is administrators (mostly men) who make the decision to eliminate sports, a small fact which Gavora overlooks.Overall, this book was filled with inacuracies and I would not recommend it. ... Product Description

n the tradition of Friday Night Lights, an extraordinary journey into the basketball-crazed culture of remote Arctic Alaska.

The village of Fort Yukon sits eight miles above the Arctic Circle, deep in Alaska's Â"bushÂ" country. The six hundred men, women and children who live thereÂ--almost all of them Athabascan Gwich'in NativesÂ--have little to cheer for. Their traditional Indian ways of life are rapidly vanishing in the face of a modern culture that is closing in on all sides, threatening to destroy their community and their identity. The one source of pride they can count on is their boys' high school basketball teamÂ--the Fort Yukon Eagles.

Eagle Blue follows the Eagles, winners of six regional championships in a row, through the course of an entire 28-game season, from their first day of practice in late November to the Alaska State Championship Tournament in March. With insight, frankness, and compassion, Michael D'Orso climbs into the lives of these fourteen boys, their families, and their coach, shadowing them through an Arctic winter of fifty-below-zero temperatures and near-round-the-clock darkness as the Eagles criss-cross Alaska by air, van, and snow machine in pursuit of theirÂ--and their village'sÂ--dream.

4-0 out of 5 stars Kayla
Eagle Blue was outstanding. The ways in which Michael D'Orso portrays the life of high school basketball players from Fort Yukon Alaska, and the affect of the basketball team on the community, seems like he actually lived the story. From traveling by plane to away games, to living in a 'bush city' where drug abuse, alcoholism, and fighting is all too common among the players, D'Orso makes the reader feel as if they are living in the town with this amazing team. Coach Dave is a popular man in town who helps the boys learn to play basketball, and stay on a good, healthy, life path. He is not only the coach for a team which everyone in town looks to for spirit, but he demonstrates to the reader the way of life that people live by in a town like Fort Yukon, Alaska. The end of the book is very surprising. I couldn't put it down. If you're a sports fan who's looking for a page-turning book, I highly recommend Eagle Blue.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Compelling Sports Novel by D'Orso
Eagle Blue is a compelling and suspenseful novel by Michael D'Orso, as he follows the season of fourteen high school athletes in artic Alaska. The author uses many excellent sensory details to describe the journey, from the first practice, to the last play-off game. He gives the reader the ability to travel with the team as they compete in gyms around the ice-capped state.
D'Orso keeps the reader very informed regarding the emotions and intentions of each character through his brief, yet in depth, interview process. I, as a reader enjoyed this technique, because it provided me with evidence regarding the reality of the plot line, and allowed me to better understand each character. However, I did not care for the way he notes all the character's family connections and relatives' thoughts. I found them extremely uneventful and bland.
The author does an excellent job in building the suspense of each game. He analyzes each moment, play by play through the triumphs and setbacks of the Eagles' many competitive encounters. He brings out the true feeling of the game with his writing, particularly when talking about the loss and evindent disapointment in the final play off game. These analyzations are his greatest skill as an author, and I found that the games were often my favorite parts of the novel.
The end of the novel was very disapointing because of the outcome of the last game, but it did wrap up all the odd ends, so to speak, and left me with no lingering questions. The ending, however, was my least favorite part because of the intense sadness and regret the whole team feels. I, as a basketball player, was able to relate to these feelings, and I had hoped that Fort Yukon would not have to face them.
Overall, Eagle Blue was an amazing and eventful read, and I would reccomend it to all sports fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best basketball books I've read...and then some
Any sports fan who picks up "Eagle Blue" will not be disappointed, although you should like this one even if you could care less about hoops...Basketball is the stage for the story, but not the story in and of itself. This isn't your typical book depicting some world-weary NBA star or jaded coach.D'Orso makes you care about the players and coaches at a tiny school literally in the middle of nowhere, thus their wins (and losses) somehow become your own.If that were as far as this book took you, it would be satisfying just on that basis. But it doesn't end there.

By the time you're done reading "Eagle Blue", you'll likely become sympathetic with the people populating its pages.Theirs is a culture that has been decimated, and you can see very real defeat among many tribal members. The ultimate story is how a group of teenagers galvanizes a town with nothing else to cheer about despite the efforts of some people, mostly outsiders, to kill what they have, and he thankfully keeps the focus on that. You end up rooting for them.

If you're at all like me (and God help you if you are), you'll fight to stay awake until 3AM because you literally do not want to put this book down and fall aleep.

4-0 out of 5 stars Boldly honest perspective of Native life in modern Arctic Alaska
Boldly honest, "insiders" perspective from an outsider. Interesting insight into modern Native life in Arctic Alaska.

D'Orso's honest, unembellished presentation of everyday life for the characters - team members and townspeople of Fort Yukon - allows the reader to gain an open true look at what everyday life entails in this part of Alaska. It brings out the difficulties of living in the outposts of Arctic Alaska, Native vs. modern culture, politics vs. the land/natural resources/hunting/etc., and of course the tale of a group of young men and women representing their town as members of high school basketball teams. The pressures faced by these young men as individuals, family members, and town members and how each deals with it and grows shows a great view of life as it unfolds for them.Their daily lives are woven around the story of the basketball team and the course of a season sharing the success and adversity over the course of the year.A wonderful mix of human interest and basketball.

Highly enjoyable read.

Product Description

The Carlisle Indian School and the Haskell Institute in Kansas were among the many federally operated boarding schools enacting the U.S. government's education policy toward Native Americans from the late nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century, one designed to remove children from familiar surroundings and impose mainstream American culture on them.To Show What an Indian Can Do explores the history of sports programs at these institutions and, drawing on the recollections of former students, describes the importance of competitive sports in their lives. Author John Bloom focuses on the male and female students who did not typically go on to greater athletic glory but who found in sports something otherwise denied them by the boarding school program: a sense of community, accomplishment, and dignity.

4-0 out of 5 stars Could be improved, but well worth it!
The premise etc behind this book is excellent. However, the many black and white photos tell the likely reader of book very little. This should not take away though from the solid advice, work-out plans, bits and pieces of commonsense training, diet etc, and the seasonal/periodicity themes that make this book very worthwhile.Although I have not the experience nor credentials that Mr. Smith and many of you have, I recommend taking the themes of this book and expanding in more detail, and ditching the numerous b&w still photos that really tell an exerciser little about the movements. If anything, provide photos of important do's and don'ts of the exercises, but don't half-change the movement with a photo to fill the pages.Other than this opinion, I found the book an excellent addition to my fitness literature and plan on incorporating its ideas into my own routines.

2-0 out of 5 stars book
The routines in this book are soo random and lengthy a simpler more effective approach could be used.his navy seal book was better

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Workout!
I wanted to find a workout that I could stick with all year that is challenging and takes my body to new heights in terms of physical strength, endurance, and agility.Though I've only been on the program for a few weeks, I can already see these three aspects changing.

The workout starts normally enough, but gets tough fast.Fortunately Stew has made it flexible enough so that anyone can do it: from the hardcore wanna-be Navy SEAL to the dedicated guy who wants to get in shape.Complete with a full explanation of exercises, the full year-round routine, and even nutritional advice, Stew's book is a great find for those who want to find one good exercise program to stick with for a long time!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Must have for 35yr olds with prior exercise experience who want to get back in shape.

5-0 out of 5 stars Effective and Flexible
I've had this book since it came out and I am still recommending it to people. The work-outs can be adjusted for different fitness levels but they will take you as far as you want to go. You can't really outgrow this book.
I like the way it is broken up into phases- strength, cardio- this is better than doing the same mix throughout the year. Stretching and flexibility are not forgotten either.
My beginner friends liked the introduction to pyramiding reps (a good trick to increase puul-up/push-up reps)and the fact that you don't need to be in a gym every day. Quite a lot can be done outdoors or at home.

I run across very few other work out schedules that can be used for such a range of fitness levels. It isn't gimicky or sport specific, it's for all around fitness. ... Read more

Product Description
In this collection of essays, leading national sport authorities including journalists, coaches, athletic directors, and varsity and professional players themselves, talk about what is wrong with sports education today and how it can be improved. Each contributor considers whether public expectations - that sport promotes character development, physical fitness and positive educational and social values - are being met in today's reality. By exploring these long unchallenged notions, the writers ask tough questions like: is a coach or parent screaming at a 6-year-old for missing a fly ball a healthy way in which to introduce a youngster to sport?; just how does an athletic scandal or the low graduation rate of student-athletes positively contribute to the image and educational mission of a university?; what does sport really represent in the age of television, corporate sky boxes and "sneaker deals"?; and how has organized sport become more about the egos of those who coach and administer the programmes than about the personal development of those who participate in them? ... Product Description
Over the past century, high school and college athletics have grown into one of America's most beloved--and most controversial--institutions, inspiring great loyalty while sparking fierce disputes.

In this richly detailed book, Pamela Grundy examines the many meanings that school sports took on in North Carolina, linking athletic programs at state universities, public high schools, women's colleges, and African American educational institutions to social and economic shifts that include the expansion of industry, the advent of woman suffrage, and the rise and fall of Jim Crow. Drawing heavily on oral history interviews, Grundy charts the many pleasures of athletics, from the simple joy of backyard basketball to the exhilaration of a state championship run. She also explores conflicts provoked by sports within the state--clashes over the growth of college athletics, the propriety of women's competition, and the connection between sports and racial integration, for example. Within this chronicle, familiar athletic narratives take on new meanings, moving beyond timeless stories of courage, fortitude, or failure to illuminate questions about race, manhood and womanhood, the purpose of education, the meaning of competition, and the structure of American society. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Help Your Athlete Find the Joy in High School Sports
This year our football team set a record ... we were undefeated in our conference for the second consecutive year. Then it came time for our playoff game.As a #3 seed playing a #14 seed, we expected to win our first game. Most of the players and coaches were thinking ahead to the third game, where winning would begin to get difficult. Then the flu made the rounds on our football team. Then the rain ... a total of four inches beginning the day prior to and ending three hours before the game.It was difficult to use our greatest assets of speed and agility in the mud, and some of our key players were still ill but trying to play. This loss ended our dreams for a state championship. After the game we made our way onto the field to say goodbye to the seniors. It broke my heart to see their tears, not knowing whether they were because we lost or because they had played their last game, or perhaps a little of both.We had watched these boys grow up, becoming not just fine athletes but also fine young men.

The fact is that most of these young men will not go on to play football in college, let alone "earn" a college scholarship.According to Jim Thompson, only 5.7 percent of high school football players play in college. For basketball, it's 3 percent for boys and 3.3 percent for girls.Of the young athletes who do play sports in college, only about 2.3 percent receive a scholarship, and most receive a "partial scholarship that may be just a sliver of the entire cost of college."Most parents want to believe their young athlete has the talent to receive a scholarship, but after reading this book will set aside some money for college, realizing the "odds" are against it.

The High School Sports Parent is a comprehensive guide, covering everything from higher goals to sportsmanship to injuries, even helping decide when it's time to quit.Ever hear parents screaming when their kids make a mistake?Know a parent who coaches their child's team? When my son played basketball, at practice one night the coach became very frustrated with his son and threw the basketball into his back, nearly knocking him down. The parents who observed this behavior complained to the principal, who asked him to resign. While these types of parents definitely need to read this book, every sports parent will benefit from Mr. Thompson's advice. Some schools are even handing free copies out to parents in an effort to avoid problems later on.This book isn't just about helping your child learn to compete; it is also a tool to help you help your teen athlete thrive, making himself, his team, and the game better.
