5-0 out of 5 stars Really helped me get into the world of SQL
If your green to MSSQL, then buy this book. The Sams series are pretty decent and price point is even better used. :)Helped me immensely with SQL edicate, maintenance, common admin steps that you don't get when installing, performance help, etc. Very well written.

5-0 out of 5 stars No peer.
I use(d) this book as the basis towards my WIN2K MCDBA...It is superior to anything out there including Microsoft's Official MCSE [Exam 70-228] SQL Server 2000 SA Training Kit... includes everything one needs assuming one immerses oneself in the book from Day 1 through Day 21 in addition to Day 22 (SQL Server Analysis Services (OLAP)) and Day 23 (English Query). It is both a superior reference book and programmer's guide. After purchasing Microsoft's official references I found myself repeatedly (frustrated by their shortcomings and referring back to this particular SAMS text). Enough cannot be said about this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars I liked the book
The book was ok. It has taught me a lot. However, it is not without its easily seen errors.

1) Some concepts are not expounded on to make sure a newcomer or complete idiot thoroughly understands what is said. Some sentences can be so concise that it can cause you to take a word for granted (if you aren't paying extra attention) which could lead to complete confusion. thus, if there are no supporting sentences you can be completely lost. It also uses terms without explaining them or maybe expects you to know terms that a newcomer would not know. Some concepts are just not explained clearly period.

2) Some of the exercises use obsolete code. It is as if the person who wrote the chapter didn't write the exercise.

So if you need a book. Yes, buy this book. Hearing the negative comments can distract but at the same time only good comments can cause a person to wonder if something is wrong with him. The book DOES have errors! Point Blank! Some are very noticeable. Few are frustrating. My most frustrating experience so far has been chapter 5. I had to read ch 6 to understand 5 better. But you will learn a lot and the book's exercises do a good job in making sure you understand what was covered. My point is only that if something seems strange like the exercises on chapter 5 (also the exact same, word for word as exercises for ch 6, probably a mistake) it is probably the book and not you. The answers for chap 5 exercises are indeed obsolete (question 1 anyway).

Overall, the book makes learning this stuff very easy.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT Book
I have a LOT of access experience and wanted to move to SQL Server.
This is a great beginner book for those with a little knowledge of SQL and a lot of knowledge of relational databases.
Great chapters on SQL usage.
GET THIS BOOK!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent exam prep
I found this book excellent prep for the MCP exam (70-229). The discussions on deadlocks, indexing, transactions, and security (specifically, application roles and ownership chains) were definitely the difference in my passing the exam.

The authors do a very good job of explaining WHY you would want to do something, not just HOW.

The only negative thing for me was the frequent references to how things used to work in SQL 7.0, 6.5 and earlier.

5-0 out of 5 stars Need to learn SQL quick?
I had an urgent need to learn PL/SQL while I was interviewing for new positions after losing mine when the company I work for shut down. A lot of companies had PL/SQL positions and I had some experience but needed to brush up my skills and this book did great things to strengthen my understanding of PL/SQL without being overly complex and confusing. This is a great book for anyone just getting into PL/SQL or those that want a refresher. Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book For Beginners
This is a great book for beginners. I give it only 4 stars because it does not have examples to practice.

In my opinion you definitely have to know SQL better prior to using this book. For hard-heads like me :) it was helpful to understand the concepts and the programming Syntax in a easier way without losing in several lines of text.

However I used this book along with the free online material and had practicing on Oracle installed in my PC and trying out the examples/scenarios that I created myself.

I am glad I used this book and would recommend any one to start with this for beginners and move on to books with more advanced concepts.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate PL/SQL book
Easily one of the best programming books I've ever bought, in my life. I can't tell you how many strange programming assignments I have been able to pull off because of this book. From cursors to clobs and whatnot. Everyone in the office thinks I'm a wizard because of this book. It is also a very good reference book with great examples anyone can pick up easily. I agree, with one of the reviewers, not really really a beginners book, but if you write PL/SQL for about 3 months this should be an indispensable resource.

1-0 out of 5 stars Absolute junk
This is absolutely, hands-down, the worst computer-related book I've ever had the misfortune to read. It's also the first "For Dummies" book I've read, so it may be the fault of the series rather than the book.

The book is poorly written and poorly edited. There are errors in the code examples and numerous inconsistencies in the text. The book doesn't really say anything except, to paraphrase, "There are many things that you should know, but they're beyond the scope of this book.Check somewhere else."

I bought this book based on the recommendations on this page-- my mistake.I'll never buy a "For Dummies" book again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Text For PL/SQL Beginners
Fantastic text for beginners in PL/SQL.Clearly laid out concepts and samples, and hints at naming conventions and other standards to be used.A very solid introduction to the language. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars sloppy, amateurish, and impractical
problem 1 is that the authors obviously aren't developers. they're a couple of guys who like sql puzzles. much of the code in this book has little or no practical value. you should not use it in production systems because it will not perform well and will be difficult to maintain. it's like they're trying to show off some way of getting a complex result set with a single select and not even thinking about the performance impact of the code or its maintainability. that kind of stuff is cool to newbies, but real engineers know better.

problem 2 is the astoundingly bad advice throughout. the complex numbers discussion doesn't belong in the book and you should not try to implement complex number handling in t-sql unless you want to be out of a job. much of the advice in the book revolves around cool coding tricks that aren't applicable to any real world problem. who cares if you can do something with a single select that most people would take two statements to do? does the code perform better? have you considered what it will be like to tune and maintain? how readable is it?

bottom line here is that the authors are amateurs who really shouldn't be writing a book to instruct others in t-sql. they need to learn some other languages and get beyond the "cool coding tricks" stage to true engineering.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not only not advanced-not beginner either
If advanced means more than I know with only 2-1/2 years with Sql then this is not an advanced book. It is mostly puzzles and things like that-not anything really useful in the real world. The worst part of it is all the errors in the code. There must be dozens of these-but where is the errata?

I have a lot of comp. books and this one has more beginner mistakes and typoes than any others I have read. Not advanced and not beginner-not sure who is supposed to read it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Lots of good, more not-so-good
On the positive side, there are numerous interesting Transact SQL techniques demonstrated in this book. A couple of them have proved to be very useful to me. I like the exploration of different challenges people face with Transact SQL and the solutions the authors provide.

I also like the catalog nature of the book. APress is getting better at this with their books, and this one is pretty good as a reference.

On the negative side, the language is misued often in this book. As the old saying goes, "When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail." There are several problems attacked in this book that would be better solved with a language other than Transact SQL. It is simply the wrong tool. I could offer several examples, but the most obvious one would be the complex numbers discussion. I see others have mentioned this, too. Not only are complex numbers not best handled by Transact SQL, they cannot even be accurately handled by the language. You will quickly become the victim of rounding errors, performance problems, and other devils if you try something like this in production code.

Another negative is that authors don't write that well. I have come not to expect a lot from technical books, so I don't think this is that big of a deal. But I would have to say that the writing quality in this one is low even for technical books. For one thing, the two write completely differently and you can see the different styles contrasting in different sections of the book. Add to this the fact that neither style is particularly lucid or engaging, and you have a book that is an editor or two short of being cogent and readable.

4-0 out of 5 stars A commentary on Critiques:
A common theme among the negative critiques, is the use of the word "Advanced" in the book's title.Personally, i think the authors should simply have chosen a different title, and half of the negative comments would have been subdued. (Something to signify the apparent intent of the authors, such as "An anthology of T-SQL", or "A Comprehensive Introduction to T-SQL" ...)"Advanced" of course is to some extent a product of one's own thinking, and experience.Another aspect to this subject of "Advanced" has to do with the totally hackneyed, over-worked use of the term "Guru."Someone / something can in fact be "Advanced", and NOT be in the realm of "Guru."This term is COMPLETELY over-used, and over-applied.There are in fact but a very FEW "Guru's" out there in the 'Real World' (Ken Henderson being one.)A Guru is a unique, creative combination of high native intelligence, tireless enthusiasm, and indeterminate hours of true, Hands-On Experience, with the product.A Guru can be identified as someone who ALWAYS seems to know more about the topic, no matter what he/she is asked or challenged with.(As an aside....a "Guru" is NOT always a great, or even good, author ... or, communicator to humans, in general ... although this particular talent definitely is advantageous!)In short, evaluate a product, such as a computer book, on its merits, applicability to the task at hand, and value to YOU.Take with a GIANT grain of salt, any negative critique(s) before choosing .... esp. those propagated from a SINGLE source masquerading as MULTIPLE people!

5-0 out of 5 stars Crisp, clear and very practical...
This is the most reliable and advanced source of information about TSQL for me. I love this book. It's examples are crisp, clear and very practical. Great job! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Author expects you to create the practice database yourself
I'm new to SQL, but not new to databases. The author does a decent job of starting out in Chapter 1 with a discussion explaining databases. At the end of the chapter, he strongly encourages the reader to "create the sample database and run the examples in the book."

The database model is extensive, and it would take considerable time to replicate the database. This is time that I am not learning about SQL, which is why I started the book in the first place. He gives a link to the publishers website to download the SQL code to do his exercises, but the database is not there.

Readers expect that learning SQL requires a a sample database, and that database should be included with the book. That the database is not provided, and is not downloadable, is unacceptable.

There are MANY other choices where the databases are included with the book. I have abandoned "SQL Demystified" and will start over with another book that doesn't expect the database to be re-created.

4-0 out of 5 stars Definitely Demystified
I thought this book was even simpler than SQL for Dummies. For a semi-beginner like myself, the book helped me navigate better with queries and scripts.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good "conversational" choice for your SQL education...
There is obviously no lack of titles on the subject of SQL.The main choice you have to make is whether you want a conversational or traditional style approach to your learning.Personally, I'm more into conversational, and I had the chance to review a book along those lines...SQL DeMystified by Andy Oppel.

Contents: Relational Database Concepts; SQL Concepts; Defining Database Objects Using SQL; Retrieving Data Using Data Query Language (DQL); Combining Data from Multiple Tables; Advanced Query Writing; Maintaining Data Using DML; Applying Security Controls Using DCL; Preserving Database Integrity Using Transactions; Integrating SQL into Applications; SQL Performance and Tuning Considerations; Final Exam; Answers to Quizzes and Final Exam; Index

The DeMystified series takes the approach of cutting through jargon and theoretical prose, and goes straight to the core concepts without all the trappings. As a result, I find it much easier to learn what I need to know, as well as how I can apply it immediately.Oppel uses the example of a film library database to take the reader through database concepts, normalization processes, and how the data can be manipulated within a relational database environment using SQL.Once you finish with the book, you will know everything in the way of base concepts.Your learning is also reinforced with a series of quizzes at the end.A nice way to measure your progress.Another positive is that the material is vendor-neutral, so you don't need to worry about whether you have the right software or not.Any relational database system will use these same concepts and processes. The author does point out areas in which certain vendor packages have differed in their implementation, so any large landmines you might encounter can be avoided.

It would be hard *not* to learn what you need to know from this book.As a result, you wouldn't go wrong with this choice for your SQL education. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Complete Book on Encryption - A must have on every book shelf - Review by Founder of SQLAuthority
"What is your opinion on encryption? What I mean is: In a world filled with data, how do you see encryption?" This is the precise question Michael Coles posed to me on March 3rd of this year, while we were heading to Starbucks in Seattle. We were both attending the Microsoft MVP Summit there.

In the information era, security has become one of the most vital aspects of life. Although the topic may seem a little mundane, its importance cannot be overemphasized. It is the pillar of the information age and I shudder to think where we would be without it. We don't leave our houses unlocked and risk thieves or opportunists taking off with our valuables. We also often take precautions, not only to preserve the precious, but also to avoid the sheer hassle of replacement and misuse. So too it should be with our information.

Encryption's roots are extremely old and it has resolved numerous security problems over the years. In days gone by, couriers were entrusted with letters sealed with a royal wax stamp. If on delivery, the seal was broken, it was obvious that there had been a security breach. This very concept evolved as CRC checksum and developed into a complex algorithm. While CRC checksum alerted the end user to the fact that content had been modified, its limitation was that it allowed manipulation of the content to occur in the first place. With encryption, only the authenticated owner can access and modify content.

In response to Michael's question, I began to tell him what I knew about public and private keys. He looked at me doubtfully and asked me directly if I had ever used encryption in my career. My reluctant answer to this was "No". He strongly suggested that I not underestimate its capabilities and explore its possibilities. I took his advice and have since implemented encryption for many of my clients, who are now far safer from unauthorized access to data.

To be very honest, in my experience, not many people know much about the subject beyond a little about public and private keys. You do not often find experts discussing symmetric and asymmetric keys, which are just the tip of the iceberg. SQL Server has come a long way with regard to security. Encryption has taken on a whole new meaning in SQL Server 2008. There are many new features such as Extensible Key Management, Transparent Data Encryption, not to mention the pre-2008 ones such as cryptographic hashing, SQL CLR and many more. In performance terms, these are great enhancements.

The one exception is Transparent Data Encryption, where the whole database is encrypted. This can considerably reduce performance if the SQL Server box is not sufficiently powerful. It this is the case, it is a good time to offload all the encryption and decryption to third-party hardware. SQL Server allows third-party management of encryption and decryption through Extensible Key Management.

Extending the earlier courier analogy, consider the fact that even if our letter is secure and safe in our hands, as soon as we hand it to the courier it is exposed to risk and can be compromised. SQL Server 2008 has many new features, which secure data while it is being communicated between applications. A number of features were introduced that check whether data is manipulated during transmission.

Data is everywhere and taking in terms of Terra Bytes (TB) is the current reality. When a large amount of data needs to be handled, there are two major challenges. The first challenge is the actual encryption process and the resources needed to perform it. The second challenge is how to use the data once it has been encrypted. In a regular database searching through TBs of data can take a very long time. Imagine how long this could take in and encrypted database?

In Seattle, Michael and I discussed these challenges and a few more subjects. The discussion lasted more than four hours. I have always known Michael to be an excellent author. He is renowned in the industry for his expertise of XML and Full Text Search. To my mind, he is an expert who has the extraordinary ability of relating complex concepts in simple terms. No matter how long, boring or complicated the topic, his delivery is always sweet, like chocolate that melts in the mouth.

Michael always addresses uncommon subjects. Perhaps his experience as a Sergeant in the army has given him the spirit to explore the unexplored.I have never before encountered a single book on the subject of encryption for SQL Server and Michael's will a "first".

I recently had the pleasure of reading it and especially like the manner in which he and his co-author, Rodney, explain the significance of encryption. While many of the concepts covered are domain-specific, quite a few topics are common to all and the appendix is a "must read" for anyone planning a security strategy. One thing that really makes this book special is the fact that each module is written independently and you can find solutions by simply reading the relevant one.

I am a hands-on developer and only like books that have a lot of workable examples. With the exception of the first chapter, the book is filled with examples and hands-on experiments. The first chapter in itself is quite unique, as it not only provides a introduction to encryption, but also the very interesting history of encryption.Even non-technical readers will enjoy this.

It is my great pleasure to welcome this one-of-a- kind book to the SQL Server world. There is no doubt that this book is exceptional and will inspire anyone one who is ready to take their current security mechanism to the next level using encryption.

1-0 out of 5 stars Material is far too old!
I'm returning this book because it's based on Oracle 8!We are migrating to Oracle 11 and I really need something much more up-to-date than a 10 year-old book.Unfortunately, neither Amazon or the the book cover make any hint or reference to applying to Oracle 8.

2-0 out of 5 stars not my first choice, look at other options
This book is not the best option for a newbie or for someone without access to Oracle.(***From page 12, you need an Oracle database and SQL*Plus to complete the exercises.)
The book is written in a way that the material doesn't make sense without the hands-on.I see that the text includes a lot of exercises but I don't see screen shots.
Last, my text actually seemed photocopied on the inside--the grayscale art seemed like it was fresh from the copy shop...not exactly what I expected.
I wouldn't but this book again.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too many errors!!
At least half of the code examples I tried would not run. It is really frustrating to have a training guide where you cannot trust any of the examples to be coded correctly. I am amazed anyone would give this book a positive rating.

1-0 out of 5 stars 2 Authors -- one good, one really, really bad
After reading the first 3 chapters of this book, I was thinking to myself "Wow!This book is great".However, moving on to chapter 4, it felt like a bus fell on me.I read the next few chapters in stunned amazement, wondering what happened, and then I discovered it -- the first three chapters had been written by a different author than the current chapters that I was struggling through.

Where the first chapters, written by Jonathan Gennick, had pertinent, precise examples and a good development of the subject matter, the subsequent chapters (4-9), written by Tom Luers, contained error after error with poor development of the subject matter. The naming of variables was confused and the case of variables and keywords changed from example to example (and even within the same example!).

When I started reading this book, I typed all the examples into Personal Oracle to experiment along with the text.In addition, I placed small "sticky" notes on each page where I encountered an error in the text.I found only a few in the first few chapters. However, after hitting chapter 4, I found myself putting notes on at least every other page, and sometimes multiple notes on a single page! After struggling through several chapters of Luers' writing, I could no longer bring myself to type in the examples -- actually, some of the examples were based on tables that had not even been covered yet in the text, making it impossible to try them. Also, because of the huge number of errors, I stopped adding "sticky" notes, lest I run out of my supply.

Sadly, I cannot recommend this book (even though I found the chapters written by Gennick to be very good). If you do buy this book, read chapters 1-3, 10-13, 16-17, and 20-21, and skip the rest.

My final thoughts: I cannot believe that a publisher would sell a book with such an amazing number of errors, or that such a solid technical author would partner with such an incapable one.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for beginners to learn PL/SQL
I am a professional Accountant/ Auditor (CPA from USA) and heading finance division in a corporate, with a turnover over $ 2 billion. As our organization is undergoing ERP and I have been made as Implementation Committee member from the client side, I have been looking into Oracle. I don't have any knowledge of any programming language except that I am an extensive good user. In order to interact effectively and out of curiosity, I decided to learn Oracle 8i (SQL and PL/ SQL) and Developer 2K. I attended a fortnight training session given to our EDP guys. As the training was meant for those guys who are already in the field, it was not effective upon me and I could not grasp much. Further I was hesitant to ask my doubts, since otherwise it would slower the pace of the training. I purchased various books from Oracle Press but I found the reading was cumbersome, since it had not been built on a good foundation for lay guys like me. In a hard way, I learnt SQL from the training, books and well-learnt friends and was thorough with that, while I was finding PL/SQL as difficult to learn. I came across this book when perusing thru a bookshop. I liked the way it has been organized. It is 21 days course material with 3 to 5 hours each day and built nicely from day 1.In the week I, one learns basics of PL/SQL and building blocks, in week II, he/ she will learn some of the more advanced features and will also learn how to use PL/SQL in conjunction with a data base. In the final week, Oracle's built in packages have been taught. The book is meant for absolute beginners like me (who have some adequate knowledge of SQL). I have been transformed into a person who has a fairly good knowledge of PL/SQL, after fully going thru the book I am able to understand what sort of codes are written by my Oracle friends and consultants. My colleagues and bosses are admiring my PL/SQL knowledge. Often now I have been placed in the Interview committee to select staff for EDP department along with EDP guys and I have been always asking questions from the Q & A, Quiz, exercises material from this book. Probably one of the coming days, I may even head our EDP department, who knows?Over all, this book is excellent for beginners for learning PL/SQL. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Use the book; chunk the CD
I have not real gripes with book.It is not great; it is not bad. There are not a lot of resources out there to use to study for the OCP Developer exam. This seems to be one of the few resources out there outside of one of the exam prep companies.

I've been in this business more than a few years, and I am used to reading technical manuals and books. This one is especially dry.I really had to crack my internal whip to get after it.

My real gripe is the CD packaged with it.I'm not even all the thru the practice tests and modules and I ready to take it to the skeet range. It is a piece of junk.

Let's start off with the interface. It looks like something coming out of a high school computer class 10 years ago.And the button that says "Guess again" after an incorrect answer is so juvenile.

Then add in the errors, bugs and poor design. My favorite design flaw is where they state after a question "Choose all that apply" then give you radio buttons.Well guess how many can apply! If there is more than one answer they give you check boxes.

More than once I have a question come back as incorrect, look at their explanation text only to have it tell me the one I selected was the correct answer, arrggghhh.

On a few questions the chosen answer was just flat out wrong.I have spent time researching these which is I suppose a good learning exercise, but hopefully that is not what they intended.

Use the book; chunk the CD in the trash.

2-0 out of 5 stars Need thorough knowledge
I took the test last week but failed with a score of26.Looks like you need to prepare thoroughly and in depth to clear this test. I took by word the other reviews which claimed after studying this book, the test would a cakewalk. It doest seem so and the questions were more tricky and difficult. If you are planning to take ,prepare in depth and be prepared to expect tougher questions than in this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for 1Z0-147
This book is good for preparing 1Z0-147,which is 2nd paper of OCA.It covers almost 90% of the course.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Book, Bad CD!
Although this book is a guide for the 1Z0-101 exam, I got it to prepare myself for the 1Z0-147 exam, which I just passed. It covered everything but LOBs and the use of CALL for triggers (topics not supposed to be in the 1Z0-101). So, it is a great book: easy format, very realistic practice exams. The only reason I give it 4 starts instead of 5 is because the CD that cames with it is horrible. The software has a lot of bugs, so it's a waste of time using it. To give you an example, some questions that are intended to have multiple answers, just don't let you chose more than one. Ridiculous!

4-0 out of 5 stars Book needs to be upgraded to 147
The book is fine and covers almost 80% of the topics of OCP 9i as well. So far little upgradation is required to make it effective for 9i exam papers. The book is wonderfully organized even a novice user can start with the book and take a hold.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro to PL/SQL - and Programming...
I don't know how to objectively review a book for which I have such a strong emotional attachment, so I won't even try. This book launched my career as a programmer, and while there was a lot of work after it to get where I am today, I credit it as what got me off the ground. It is definitely not an advanced concepts book - but it was 100% perfect as a launching pad, and contains a lot of basic programming concepts that are essential outside PL/SQL.

The prose in the book is clear, simple and importantly, readable. This remains the most accessible technical book I've ever read, and I've read a lot.

I keep this book around for sentimental reasons, primarily, as it really is outdated. But it's a hopeful reminder that not all tech books are dry and uninformative. Some of them really do contain stuff that can take you special places, and open doors.Long live SCOTT/TIGER!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for beginners
I bought this book as a complete Oracle novice, transitioning from Microsoft T-SQL to PL/SQL. I was worried about the transition being difficult until I read this book.

It is one of those very rare books thatpresents advanced concepts in a context understandable by users of allexperience levels. The author often throws in tips about Oracle PL/SQLquirks to watch out for, as well as some very applicable information abouthow Oracle works internally.

I've since become more comfortable withPL/SQL, and the book also serves as a great reference. I highly encourageyou to read this book straight through.

I recommend this well-writtenbook to anybody wanting to learn PL/SQL, as well as anyone needing a greatreference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well-Organized, Useful Examples, Easy to Read
Although the information was accurate and useful, I think the strength of this book was it's clear and logical presentation. It is easy to read and very helpful. For example, I needed to know how to dynamically build the"where" clause for select statements and his chapter on DBMS_SQLgave me the tools to accomplish my task at work.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book
This is definitely an excellent book. No one should rank it less than 5 stars just because it was published in 1996. Please do some research before talk. Actually, Scott Urman has wrote a book, "Oracle8 PL/SQLProgramming", which was published in 1997. Buy this one if you want tolearn PL/SQL 8.0.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but outdated
Oracle 8 is out and in this book it only covers to Oracle 7.It is a very well written book.It is a valuable reference however it was published in 1996.Still looking for Oracle SQL Plus 8.0 AND the PL/SQL Programming.Ihope the author steps up to the plate and updates his work. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars MS SQL Server 2005 Appplied Techniques
This book is great for starters. The techniques the book has are all strictly by the book. I think this is one of the easiest books to understand especially in the security section. I have read other books about sql server maintenance and I did not quite understand what it was talking about when it came to security. Another good chapter about this book is the queering performance, it shows how to use the execution plan and that was a great help to me. Microsoft Press did a really good job on this book, like I said it is very easy to understand the concepts.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not very good
I'm about 1/2 way through this book and probably going to stop reading it.It's really just a general overview of SQL Server 2005, and is really unhelpful if you actually want to learn to use the software.

2-0 out of 5 stars Mediocre overview of SQL 2005
overview of all aspects but not as clear as could be, lot's of pre-knowledge about visual basic is assumed and not that clearly organized. There are a lot better books out there.

2-0 out of 5 stars Mostly focused on SQL statements for developers and DBA's
There is nothing in this book that you can not find in another more organized book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible!
I have yet to find a book by Microsoft Press that is well-written, and this one is the worst of them all.It was certainly a waste of my money. There are many other books on SQL 2005 that are far better. ... Read more

Product Description

If you're a programmer or database administrator who uses SQL in your day-to-day work, this popular pocket guide is the ideal on-the-job reference. You'll find many examples that address the language's complexity, along with key aspects of SQL used in IBM DB2 Release 9.7, MySQL 5.1, Oracle Database 11g Release 2, PostgreSQL 9.0, and Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Release 2.

SQL Pocket Guide describes how these database systems implement SQL syntax for querying, managing transactions, and making changes to data. It also shows how the systems use SQL functions, regular expression syntax, and type conversion functions and formats.

All example SQL statements in this book execute against a set of tables, with data that you can quickly download. The third edition covers important database changes, including:

  • Oracle's support of the recursive WITH syntax, and addition of PIVOT and UNPIVOT operators
  • Functions new to Oracle, such as LISTAGG, NTH_VALUE, and more
  • PostgreSQL’s support of recursive WITH and some window functions
  • DB2 syntax and datatypes, some compatible with Oracle
  • MySQL features such as the TIMESTAMP type and the TO_SECONDS function

4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference. Not entirely version specific.
This is a good reference book.Because SQL has so many flavors, there are nuances that exist which force writers to reference them in a almost any book on the subject.Narrowing in on your paticular version is very helpful.Perhaps these would be better written for a specific audience if they were Manufacturer and Version specific and without the crosswalks.

Wouldn't you sell more books if it were version specific?

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful and practical book!!!!!!!!!
This is a very useful and practical book that contains tools and commands that you can use specified by db engine. It is made based on the most common database engines (PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle, DB2, SQLServer).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference for SQL 2005
This is a great reference for all platforms for SQL 2005. Everything is right at your fingertips and easy to find; and also well indexed. It is great for beginner and intermediate level users.

5-0 out of 5 stars SQL reference source
I was looking for a small SQL command resource and this fit the bill perfectly. The O'Reily series has never failed to hit the mark as a first class reference source. This book is small and pocketable and has provided me with the support I was looking for.I highly recommend this small powerful reference book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Little Handbook
As a systems admin, I find this book a great reference guide for writing SQL scripts. The instructions are clear and concise and cover most common situations. The examples aren't very clear, however, so you have to understand what the statements are dealing with, and the topics don't seem to be arranged appropriately (deleting and truncating are contained in two separate places in the book). But overall this book is a good reference guide for someone who is familiar with SQL, but needs a little assistance now and then. ... Very good buy. Discuss a lot on the newest access technology like xml and web. However, there are some part of the example program missing in the CD provided, not a big issue as they can be easily written if you hav done some access form programming.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fast results
I love this book. I build a complex ADP application with a lot of SQL Server stored procedures. The authors described very good the differences between standard Access and ADP applications. They use a nice example (movie theater) to describe working with forms und reports in ADPs.

A new book which is available and written WHEN A2002 and SQL Server 2000 where available and this is the result. Save your money and download books online or buy SQL Access to SQL Server published by Apress. In one section that book has more useful information that this entire volume. MS Press seem to be throwing a book at everything lately and quality was bound to suffer. Pity it was an important area like ADPs that suffered. Me, I am returning this for a refund tomorrow. 5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on the subject
He does an excellent job of discussing the practical applications of SSIS and getting into the deeper uses.As someone who used DTS heavily, I figured out SSIS as I went along but this book unlocked all that it could do for me.

I read a few other books on SSIS but they didn't take me anywhere I couldn't get on my own. This book doesn't just explain what, but why.Reading this book is like working with an SSIS mentor who will point out all of the little issues that are liable to arise in real-world situations.Invaluable.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I needed to get up to speed with SSIS fast so I bought this book. The author seems intelligent enough and knowledgeable of the product (SSIS) but he just didn't provide the information in a succinct way for me. Way too much reading and not enough succinct examples. The book could have been one third of the pages.

2-0 out of 5 stars Order 2 Copies Only Received One
I order two copies from this company and only have received one copy. I'm still waiting for the second copy. What's up?

3-0 out of 5 stars Not too good...
The author glosses over most everything.
It's as if he is in a rush to go somewhere else and the fact that he is trying to explain something many annoy or hinder him.
The ONLY thing I got from this book is that SSIS is now designed to NOT use staging tables, rather to do everything in memory in a stream.
OK - there's the book for you in one sentence.Other than that, he'll point out the obvious and avoid the real questions.
I really do not recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars I am learning tons!
Not sure why even one reviewer can rate this bad, this author is awesome. He is very encouraging, he had me drawn by his enthusiasm and love for SSIS. I am still making my way through the book, but wow, I am truly impressed, not only with the way the author elucidates the info, but by the power of SSIS.

Product Description
This book is designed to teach application developers all of the skills they need to use SQL to work with a Microsoft SQL Server 2008 database. But it's also a great first book for developers who are on the path to becoming a DBA.

Unlike most SQL Server 2008 books, this one starts by showing you how to use SQL queries to extract and update the data in a database, because that's what every application developer needs to know first. Then, it shows how to design and implement a database, how to use powerful backend database features like views, stored procedures, functions, triggers, cursors, transactions, locking, security, and how to work with BLOB and XML data. Finally, it shows how to use the CLR integration feature to create database objects using a .NET language such as C# or Visual Basic.

From the publisher

The SQL book that most developers don't even know they need that's how I think of this book.

To be an effective application developer, you need to master SQL for the database you re going to be using. But many developers get by with the SQL they know, never realizing how much they're missing out on.

So this is first of all a book for developers who use Microsoft SQL Server as their DBMS (though it can help you if you want to master standard SQL, too). No matter how much SQL experience you have, you'll find new features that you haven't been taking advantage of.

In section 1, you ll learn the concepts and terms you need for working with any database. You ll also learn how to use the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Management Studio to work with queries and databases. At that point, you ll be prepared for rapid progress as you learn SQL.

In section 2, you ll learn all the skills for retrieving data from a database and for adding, updating, merging, and deleting that data. These skills move from the simple to the complex so you won t have any trouble if you re a SQL novice. And they present skills like using outer joins, summary queries, and subqueries that will raise your SQL expertise if you do have SQL experience.

In section 3, you ll learn how to design a database and how to implement that design using either SQL DDL (Data Definition Language) statements or the Management Studio. When you re done, you ll be able to design and implement your own databases. But even if you re never called upon to do that, this section will give you perspective that will make you a better SQL developer.

Section 4 presents the skills for working with database features like views, stored procedures, functions, triggers, cursors, transactions, and security. It teaches you how to use SQL features to work with XML data. And it shows you how to use the 2008 FILESTREAM storage feature to work with binary large objects (BLOBs) such as image, sound, and video files. These are the features that give a DBMS much of its power and that give you an extra edge in your SQL skills.

To complete your SQL Server skills, section 5 shows you how to use the CLR integration feature. This feature allows you to create database objects like stored procedures and user-defined types using a .NET language like C# or Visual Basic. ... Read more

The Book was sent destroyed. The book was sent like this since the origin beacause tha package from Fedex was good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great books--Great Amazon service
This is my third Murach's book. They've been the required textbooks for several of my college classes. The information is very well organized. There is an example on every right side facing page, with brief information in outline form below. On the left facing page, there is detailed information about the example. This format makes it very easy to skim through information I already have some knowledge of, and quickly identify where the detailed information is needed.I've contiuned to use all of the books as references for C#,[...] 3.5 and SQL Server 2008.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best
The Murach books are great books for learning and reference. Many of the software 'brick' books are so full of fluff and examples are hard to apply, this is not the case with Murach. He uses examples that are complete and does not leave gaps for you to figure out on your own.I have been able to get up to speed on several topics using these books.

I am a Business Analysis Manager and I use C# and SQL server daily. These books have enabled me to learn quickly and use the examples in my work right away.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great book, bad e-book
WHY I WANT TO GIVE IT 5 STARS:
I learn better when I understand the "why," in addition to the "how." Even if the additional explanations of the "why" add to the total page count, they are well worth it, in my opinion. The explanations of the practical uses of various features are extremely helpful to someone like me because it makes things "stick." The "paired pages" approach is very effective. The book is down-to-business without any stupid attempts at humor, which I appreciate.

WHY I WANT TO GIVE IT 1 STAR:
As someone who went paperless several years ago and appreciates the excellent commenting (i.e., highlighting, notetaking, etc) and navigation features of PDFs and Safari Books Online, I am extremely disappointed that such a terrific book is relegated to such an awful e-book format. The "LockLizard" viewer is a far cry from Adobe Reader, Acrobat, or Safari Books Online. The publisher claims that the LockLizard format is used because it is more user-friendly than other viewers, but I don't buy it. I assume the real reason for the LockLizard format is copy protection. I think copy protection is a good idea, but only if the ebook experience isn't severely degraded as a result of it.

WHY I GAVE IT 3 STARS:
I'll happily raise my rating to 5 stars when the book is published in PDF format or added to Safari Books Online. Until then, I'm giving it 3 stars. I plan on purchasing many more of these Murach books because the content and style is excellent, but I'll remain frustrated with the ebook interface unless the move to PDF or Safari Books Online is made for the whole Murach catalog.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, in-depth reference

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, fulfills a large void in Oracle Documentation
Written much like the math textbooks of your youth (complete with exercises at the end of each section), Oracle Web Application Programming for Pl/SQL Developers is a godsend for those of us who knew you could write web apps using PL/SQL, but lacked the actual syntax to do so.Book can be used as either a reference or a tutorial guide, given that it is both comprehensive and chock full of sample code.Companion website is handy so you can copy and paste.Bottom line, if you want your browser to talk to your database and make it do neat tricks, this book will serve you well.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Helpful Book
I found this book very helpful as it explains the basics in a very clear, easy to understand language and has lots of examples. It's a high quality interactive manual: first the concepts are described, then I was presented with exercises, which is very good as most of us learn through practice, experince. The answers and clarifications which are given after the exercises unit helped me monitor my understanding and in the end I had the complete application and a great feeling of achievement. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book for MS SQL Server 6.5 Architecture
I read the book carefully and found the topics of SQL Server Architecture and Locking to be very important. Especially, the book has covered architecture part in great details, which no other books mentions about. Ilook forward to Ron Soukup's next book (may be Inside SQL Server 7.0)

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book READ THIS COVER TO COVER
This book was awesome. It takes a very very deep and granular look at SQL server.I just got a job as a SQL DBA and I wanted to know everything there was about SQL server. For three months I read this book on the busto and from work, and now, when an issue comes up at work, i am AMAZED byhow much I know.He also really prepares you with the transition to SQL 7,hinting at possible new features as he goes along. If you had only readthis book, you would know more about SQL 7 than you think!

Only 2negative comments:Very pro-microsoft and anti-competition.Oracle hasGOT to do some things better than SQL Server, but you would never know thatby reading this book. Also, this book is NOT A REFERENCE book.It is astory about SQL Server, and if you get to the end, you will be a kick-buttDBA.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent coverage - great resource for MCSD exam
I used this book to study for the MCSD exam 70-127: Implementing a Database Design with SQL Server 6.5.

This book is excellent! It touches on EVERY aspect of SQL Server 6.5 that you want to know about, and iswritten in a very readable format. This is very important when the subjectmatter is technical. Let's face it - no-one relishes this stuff, so when abook such as this is written in a manner which MAKES you want to read on,that's a great thing!

Well done Mr Soukup.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant. Simply brilliant
This is a must-have for any *serious* SQL 6.5 DBA or developer. It is not the only book you must have, it does NOT explain how to use SQL Server (hence the bad review given by someone who had never used it).Itexplains, very clearly, how it works, and what happens under the bonnet. Reading it really gave me a very clear understanding of what goes on, whichmeans I can use it better, more efficeintly etc. There is a great sectionon Query optimisation, which I've just started, but so far so good.

Ifyou want to learn how to use SQL Server, get Wynkoop's "Using SQLServer 6.5 Special Edition", if you've got that or similar, and wantto know more, get this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, and surprisingly fun to read
Only by really understanding how a sophisticated piece of software works can you get the most from it as a developer. This book provides so much information, you could almost use it write SQL Server for yourself! RonSoukup also shows that technical literature does have room for personalcomment and amusing anecdotes.

Well done Ron, I eagerly await 'Inside SQLServer 7.0' ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A good introduction to decent software
This is a very good introductory book. I doubt that memorizing it would make one a 'Master', but you'd be pretty darn good at any of the basics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Outstanding book!
I have been creating applications that use Access for the last few years, so it has been awhile since I used SQL Server.

With this book I got up to speed on client/server databases, permissions, stored procedures, triggers, T-SQL. It should be the start for anyone who is interested in this "free!" new SQL Server.

I found it very helpful, well written, succinct.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent companion book
Microsoft realeased a free version of SQL Server to compete with mySQL and it's actually quite excellent, especially given its price tag. This book makes the book claim to have you 'mastering' SQL Server, but of course no single book could do that. Instead, it provides a very comprehensive tour-de-force of all the features, bells and whistles, and relies on you - dear, Internet-connected reader - to research areas of particular interest to you.

The biggest flaw is that there's not enough information to get you up and running in the first place. Literally, the installation instructions for SQL Server Express are esoteric, and there's a couple of missing pieces of information, without which you're going nowhere. But a little digging around on the Net will have you running fairly quickly.

Overall, a great little book for the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars FREE SQL - ideal for personal, educational and small business applications
.

Microsoft has developed a FREE, yes that is FREE, SQL application that is actually rather good.

This book will get you up and running on SQL; database concepts and design; trouble shooting your databases as well as introducing you to Visual Basic Express...another FREE app from Microsoft

It isn't as robust as SQL Server, but is far better than Access.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not "a must have" book
I have bought this book for my teaching purposes targeting a "new starter" group. Introductory chapters are good. It has abundant representative pictures. But as the topics progres the book becomes having a little problematic. If you think to buy this book as a self study guide, it is maybe better to look for another one.
On the other hand, SQL Server Express Edition does not have so much book-style resources. This may force the reader to buy this book (as in my case!)
But as a last opinion, this book is not a "must have book"

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazon is cool
It's a very good transportation service. The item arrived here much earlier than I expected. This is my first time purchase from amazon and I regard it as a very good online shopping now. Thanks

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding cross-platform SQL reference
.

This book is the most robust book I have found for cross-platform SQL references.

I have yet to have a design or functional issue that was not covered in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A prgrammers view
As a C++ programmer that does not know C# or VB I found this book very helpful in conjunction with a book specific to the data base I was writting for.
This book will get you started on generic quiries and a book written on your specific data base will fill in the gaps for you.As mentioned in other reviews this book is not up to date on current standards, but as a primer book which this obviously is, standards can be left to a more case specific book.
But as I just stated the real value that I found in this book was in the programming with SQL section, if you do not know C# or VB and you are trying to write code that pulls or updates data to an SQL data base, good luck doing it without this book, I was able to find virtually no other book written for SQL with C or C++.I got my programming bit from this book, and more efficient data base specific look ups and append commands from another, and all the programs I have written thus far work flawlessly. So for that one section alone this book gets five stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Non-product specific intro to SQL
Good book if you are 100% new to SQL and the concept of queries. Not good if you're looking for a more specific language techniques for particular brands of sql. This book serves well as a nice thick primer before moving on to a more product specific topics.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for SQL, excellent reference
This book, with no doubt, is easy to understand. It provides extensive coverage of the query language with excellent examples.

If you're a newbie to the SQL subject - this is book is a good choice to start with because it will guide you through the fundamentals of SQL. BUT!!!! If you need to design a database schema you will probably want to consult a different book (that place major emphasis on database modeling and normalization - those topics are not covered extensively)

Simple, practical and to the point. 4 Starts! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is priceless, have no doubts obtaining one
This book is complete in illustrations. All protocol descriptions regarding with the dealt technology is meticulously laid out by the Authors in well defined categories. The Examples is Great, VB.Net or C# Programmers sample coding is well illustrated, No Exclusive Programmer Language only examples, VB.Net Developers this book is for you. This a Great Example of a book that should be followed by other authors. Highly Commended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book for User or Developer
Combined with existing Visual Studio help, internet and this book you have pretty much all you need. This book is a very good reference which I've used in development the last few months for a large project. I've got enough example code in my project now to cover just about every situation and plenty of content to work with. I just wish a Full SQL book wrote this well existed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice book
Nice book, it has all yo need to manage and tune SQL CE, and a lot of information about programming it. If you are a developer, this is the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Reference
SQL Server Compact Edition is meant for storing data on mobile devices such as Smartphones and PDA's or for inclusion in applications running disconnected on some user's laptop in an isolated environment. This wonderful book written by Prashant Dhingra and Trent Swanson, two Microsoft developers, is a large book about a small topic, SQL Server Compact Edition. The authors take the time to cover every aspect of working with Compact from installing it and working with the tools necessary to building your database, to programming, to synchronization with a central server, to (my favorite topic) tuning and (my least favorite) security. The book's approach is to provide you with plenty of explanations and documentation, but then to focus on step by step instructions so that you can do the things you need to do with this handy tool.
The topics are not limited to the developer's side of the box, but instead spread out to cover installations, maintenance and various methods of synchronizing the data with central sources. All of it is covered in a great deal of depth, making this a very thorough book. They even go so far as to show you how to tune queries and adjust the database structure to optimize performance and enhance integrity. It's a very thorough book.
If you're just getting started with SQL Server Compact, I can recommend this book as a must read. If you need to just support Compact, not necessarily develop on it, this book is also very useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for learning MS technologies.
SQL CE based app uses - VS, SQL Server, .NET, .NET CF, Windows Mobile and SQL CE.The book explain the landscpae and how various pieces fit together.

The developer who want to learn all MS technologies can find it useful as example walkthrough them VS, SQL Server, .NET, ADO.NET, .NET CF, Windows Mobile, IIS Security technologies

Ofcourse must for teams who are developing using SQL CE.

5-0 out of 5 stars Transact-SQL in 21 days
This book is good for beginner and advanced SQL Server user. The lessons are explained clearly and easy to understand.

4-0 out of 5 stars Challenging and a Wealth of Information
I knew only how to pass a SELECT * statement before obtaining this book.I have since taken a job writing code from what I learned from this book. Not only is their a wealth of information, but the exercises challenge the reader to think "outside the box" and create code using the information learned in the chapter.I would have given this book 5 stars but sections like views were a bit weak. After reading this book definitely pick up The Guru's Guide to Transact SQL.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent tutorial and reference

Product Description
A poorly performing database application not only costs users time, but also has an impact on other applications running on the same computer or the same network. SQL Tuning provides an essential next step for SQL developers and database administrators who want to extend their SQL tuning expertise and get the most from their database applications.

There are two basic issues to focus on when tuning SQL: how to find and interpret the execution plan of an SQL statement and how to change SQL to get a specific alternate execution plan. SQL Tuning provides answers to these questions and addresses a third issue that's even more important: how to find the optimal execution plan for the query to use.

Author Dan Tow outlines a timesaving method he's developed for finding the optimum execution plan--rapidly and systematically--regardless of the complexity of the SQL or the database platform being used. You'll learn how to understand and control SQL execution plans and how to diagram SQL queries to deduce the best execution plan for a query. Key chapters in the book include exercises to reinforce the concepts you've learned. SQL Tuning concludes by addressing special concerns and unique solutions to "unsolvable problems."

Whether you are a programmer who develops SQL-based applications or a database administrator or other who troubleshoots poorly tuned applications, SQL Tuning will arm you with a reliable and deterministic method for tuning your SQL queries to gain optimal performance. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars This Old Dog learned a new trick
Like Dan, I have been doing Oracle for a long time (since 1984).I offer three opinions about Dan's book:

1) learning how to do query diagrams is great for people who have never done them and this book is the best (maybe even the only) book for learning this.In learning to do the diagrams, you will understand the basic kinds of logic and basic math that an optimizer must do in order to get you a good plan.Do not worry. It is not a deep math book and there are not complex calculations.Indeed Dan shows you how basic it all really is.This gives you a deeper foundation in optimization and brings you closer to having that INFORMATIONAL CRITICAL MASS which is required to do good tuning.

2) the book is outdated. As I said, I have been doing Oracle since 1984.For two decades, Dan's method of tuning and relying mostly on NESTED LOOP JOIN was the only real game in town. And Dan explains it well.Unfortunately about the time Dan published the book (2003), Oracle was entering a revolution in its design. Most notably, databases were increaseing in size dramatically and this made the need for PARTITIONING strategies and PARTITION WISE HASH JOINS very high.Dan's techniques of query diagraming are still useful for understanding a query's needs, but the book is today outdated because of its lack of treatement for PARTITIONING and HASH JOIN techniques.Don't get me wrong, even outdated, this book has great value because it clarifies what you need to tell other people why certain things happened.

3) Even outdated, I learned one neat join trick which alone is worth the 20 dollars I paid for this book.Page 146 has a gem of a trick that I never considered but which I can see as offering massive benefits is a few special situations which I have faced in the past but could not solve. Thanks Dan.It is even easier to do in today's 10g and 11g databases because you need no hints to make it happen.

This brings me to my last commentary. The reason I say the book is outdated is because Oracle has come so far in the last five years with its optimizer that the trick to getting Oracle to give you the right plan is to feed it good information. If you do this then it will do what Dan shows you in this book (only better than you could) and give you a great if not best plan. Thus you will rarely bulid a query diagram these days.Instead you will try to figure out where information was not provided to Oracle correctly and fix that.If this turns out not to be the case, then the problem is likely because the SQL is crappy and you need to rewrite it.I would say that given the right information (stats collected right, constraints created for PK,UK,FK, indexes built to support the constraints, datatypes correct for columns, not null defined when real), Oracle will produce a great or best plan 99% of the time. The other 1% of the time you will 99% of the time be doing SQL rewrites. That leaves 1/100th of 1% of queries to be a real problem. Many times your system won't be that complicated.

Not being an expert in DB2 or Sql Server I cannot say how up-to-date the material remains on these databases but since I doubt their Optimizer Technology is as advanced as Oracle's there may yet be significant value retained in these two spaces.I can say that it is true that Dan's diagramming methods are universal for any database and that reading the book will provide you with that boost towards critical mass I mentioned earlier regardless of what database you use.

If you are an Oracle Developer/DBA and you are new to tuning, or want to see what you know and don't know, you can't go wrong by getting this book. After reading the book, start reading about PARTITIONING and PARTITION WISE HASH JOINS.Understanding what is in this book and understanding the details of PARTITIONING and PARTITION WISE HASH JOINS in various scenarios will put you at the forefront of tuners.Maybe its time for Dan to do an updated version of the book or write a new one.

Hail Flavius!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for the Oracle DBA
Dan Tow has created a marvelous resource. With complex queries, it is often uncertain what is the best query plan. Dan Tow takes the mystery out of that process. He details a methodology that will give you the best query plan with a high degree of certainty. He also provides insights into how to achive the desired query plan.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Work of Genius
I have withdrawn my earlier review because I did not properly understand the importance of this book until the second reading. That is a difficult admission to make since my business is database performance tuning.

This book is about tuning SQL queries in a systematic and scientific manner. It is above all about determining the optimum order in which the query engine should access the tables involved. My quibble was that join order is only a part of the whole tuning problem and most of the time the query optimizer got it right anyway. While this is true, I see now that it misses the point.

The fact that the optimizer gets it right so often allows us to take join order for granted. But how do we know the optimizer got it right unless we know what the optimum join order is? That is what this book teaches, a methodology and an elegant system of notation that allows us to determine the optimum join order of the most complex query. As the author points out, the number of possible join orders increases factorially with the number of tables involved. An 8 table join has 40,320 possible join orders. That rules out trial and error for all but the simplest queries.

It turns out that analyzing and diagramming according to Tow's method gives you a deep architectural understanding of the query and the problems that face you.It gives you a plan to which you can apply the tools of the trade, indexes, code optimization, etc.

This is a book that will be on the shelf of serious performance tuning professionals for as long as SQL is the language of data manipulation.

5-0 out of 5 stars The first real SQL Tuning method.
I have worked with Oracle databases and SQL tuning since 1987, and the reason I recommend Dan's book so highly to anyone working with SQL is that his method is the first real method I've seen in this field. There are many approaches out there, but they all fall into the Guess & Grimacing or Checklist categories. Dan's is a REAL method, and it works for all SQL-based databases. It's so far the only SQL tuning book I can recommend. Any DBA, developer and troubleshooter working with database-centric systems should know this stuff.
