2-0 out of 5 stars Stained Glass
I wasn't thrilled with this book.It shows how to do stained glass using black background not using the bias method. It is a nice book just not what I had expected...

3-0 out of 5 stars Faux Stained Glass
This book is for those who prefer to create a lead applique rather than use bias tape.If that is your preference, or think it might be, the instructions are good and the patterns pretty basic.Pieces are small and not terribly complicated so could be good for a beginner in this technique. A couple of the patterns are of interest but for the most part they are not special.

3-0 out of 5 stars Assumes you're a quilter
This book contains instructions on how to created a stained glass quilt by cutting the lead-look fabric in one piece, then fusing the colored "glass" pieces to the back of it. You do sew the layers together after piecing, but the majority of the work is either glue or fusible web.As mentioned in the previous review, the quilts are small: the largest quilt measurement is 26 1/2 inches (and it's comprised of 4 repeats of a 7 inch square block with a border).

However, the author uses quilting terminology. It's recommended that you "true" the fabric before cutting, without actually telling you what this means (it means you need to make sure the folded fabric is absolutely straight by pulling out some of the crosswise threads to establish the original grainline). You're also told to bind the quilt, "using your favorite technique."If you haven't done quilt binding before, this is not exactly helpful.

I do like the majority of the patterns [they're mostly scenic or floral in design (mountains and sunflowers) but there's also a fish pattern, a bird pattern and a rooster pattern].If you're looking for an abstract "stained glass window" pattern (diamonds or geometrics), it's not in here, but the patterns are nice, and it's a decent book if you know the ins and outs of quilting. For someone who has never sewn before, I imagine it would be somewhat baffling in areas.

This book should be called Wall hangings--NO full sized quilts. Some beautiful patterns, some quite odd. ... Read more

Cost for shipping does not match the time for delivery for one. Secondly, no color choices exists except on covers. Thirdly, patterns are very small. Fourthly, you would have to be a professional with tons of equipment/resources to accomplish any completed project. All patterns require technical resizing. 99% of patterns too complex for the novice or intermediate hobbyist.

4-0 out of 5 stars Floral stained glass lampshades - more difficult than most
I gave this book a 4 because when I went to my stained glass dealer, she told me she no longer carried this book, because the designs were so difficult to make. Many users wound up frustrated trying to create the intricate glass pieces featured in this book.A grinder is a must.

However, on that note, I am in the process of making a lamp from this book and I am a rank beginner. There are absolutely beautiful designs in here.So much for listening to good advice.

For the beginner, without another reference, this book will not be enough. There is very sparse instructions obviously assuming a non-beginner level. You get only the patterns (full size). This is great, as you don't have to mess with enlarging. The designs are well centered, so easy to copy and have nothing on the back.

Another thing to note, is that the designs don't specify how many sides the shade will have so there is no finished dimensions or hardware notation. This is really up to you.

With all those negative notes, I can't stress enough how interesting some of these patterns are.Besides Irises, Rose and Gardenias, there are many geometric designs as well as bird designs in this book.If you have the skill go for it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful lampshades from professional accurate patterns
I came across this book among many others on the same topic, and found thephotographed lamps to be exceptionally beautiful. The patterns are verywell centred on the pages, making photocopying accurate and easy.Thepaper is of good quality, and, unlike some, only one side of the paper isused.Although a smaller book than some, I am sure you will find, as Idid, that it is a very welcome addition to your pattern library. I wouldhighly recommend this book to anyone making lamps. both beginners and thosewith more experience. ... Read more

Product Description

Tough times and the unsolved murders of anyone with ties to the Deveres---a family of wealthy parish patrons---back Father Dowling up against a wall in his struggle to save his church from the chopping block.

With too many churches and not enough people to fill them, the Archdiocese has to make some cuts, and many of them, including the proposed closing of St. Hilary’s, are dangerously close to the bone. Father Dowling rushes to drum up support from church officials and parishioners, including the Deveres, who don’t want to see the stained glass windows they donated go anywhere other than the church they were meant for, but they can hardly be of help when those closest to them start turning up dead.

Church politics, long-kept family secrets, and a determined killer come together to put St. Hilary’s---a church that countless characters and devoted readers have come to love---and its parishioners in peril in Stained Glass, the latest in Ralph McInerny’s treasured mystery series.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a likely premise
This my first Father Dowling mystery. It seems to be based on a faulty interpretation of Illinois paternity law and so the whole book seems moot to me.

The scenes are short, keep changing characters and tone, and I ran out of steam long before I read the last chapter to see if there was any resolution.

Do suburban priests really have female housekeepers living with them?

5-0 out of 5 stars The Last Father Dowling
Ralph McInerny died this winter so this is most likely the last Father Dowling mystery.Suffice it to say that right up to the end, McInerny never lost his touch for story-telling.A good final read!

5-0 out of 5 stars pleased with purchase
good seller of a good book written by the best author. It doesn't get any better

3-0 out of 5 stars Filled with Sub-Plots and Secondary Characters
Father Dowling returns in this series to head the cast of characters whose lives revolve around St. Hilary's, a Roman Catholic church in the small town of Rox River, Illinois. While he copes with rumors that St. Hilary's will be closed by the Bishop--not to mention the shenanigans of his anxious parishioners, Father Dowling is peripherally involved in the investigation of a young woman's murder.

McInerney's characterization of the Church and its inner workings is right on the money, which lends a credibility to the story that I enjoyed. He also has a dry sense of humor that makes some of his dialogue and narrative unexpectedly humorous.

The book is populated with numerous sub-plots and secondary characters and, unfortunately, I found myself more drawn to some of them than I was to the plight of Father Dowling and St. Hilary's. I also found the book's format of successive short scenes frustrating: each scene involved different characters and, just as I became absorbed, the scene ended and we switched to another set of characters. Some of the best scenes in the book, however, involved Agnes and Cy, the detectives investigating the murder. The twists and turns in that sub-plot were excellent.

Although I kept hoping to be more drawn to the characters and engaged by the author's writing style, I did enjoy the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars the best Father Dowling mystery in several years
The Archdiocese decides to close down several parishes whose congregation has diminished.Among them is St. Hilary's of Fox River, Illinois. The priest Father Dowling understands the economics behind the decision, but worries for his flock. The St. Hilary's members and Father Dowling hope (and pray) they can save their church and begin an effort to do so, the "Save St. Hilary's movement.

A nude female body is found hanging from the cross strut of a garage door. The police believe a ritual perhaps satanic homicide occurred. As the cops, reporters Tetzel and Rebecca and Father Dowling investigate they find a link to the divided Devere family. The nonagenarian matriarch Jane has used trust fund money to hire an author to write a book on Menotti's church art to include a stained glass window provided to St. Hilary's by her family; other Devere kin are outraged by her generosity, which apparently surfaces with more murders occurring.

This is the best Father Dowling mystery in several years as the amateur sleuth struggles with the impact of the economy most likely closing his church and the homicides that seem tied to the one of the deadly sins, avarice. The story line is intelligent although Father Dowling follows his usual method to solving felonies, but the back stories of the impact of the economy and the changing demographics of Fox River provide a terrific fresh look at St. Hilary's and the church surviving in a modern world.

This book has lots of doable projects. I would classify the skill levelas beginner to intermediate, but be prepared to come up with you own colorschemes because there are no photographs of completed projects.

About 95%of the patterns have floral themes: lots of tulips, roses, lilies and othergeneric flowers. There are also a few pattern with women's profiles, twopeacocks, a fish, and a very impressive butterfly pattern (I have seen thisone for sale at the auction sites several times). 5-0 out of 5 stars Touching story, more so because inspired by actual events
I learned of the existence of this book a couple of weeks ago by turning on my car radio and catching the last part of an interview with its author. She was saying that her research in preparation for writing a novel is practically as exciting as creating the story itself. In her research she meticulously gathers information about real people, the locale and the time in which an actual event occurred--an event that provides a historical backdrop for her story. Two of her novels, "Stained Glass Rose" and "Our Darling" sprang from cemetery tours in and near Grand Junction, Colorado, where she lives. The way "Stained Glass Rose" wends through the streets of Grand Junction was particularly fascinating, and would be even to someone not familiar with the environs.

The principal character is Rose Padroni, a teenaged girl trying to win the love of her abusive, widowed father.Unexpectedly, she strikes up a romance with Satter Simpson, and a friendship with Satter's sister Marietta "Mari" Monroe, a street-wise, rough-around-the-edges woman just a few years older than she.Despite Mari's being only a few years Rose's senior, she provides sort of a mother figure for Rose with her take-charge, highly protective manner.Their friendship is truly heart-warming but, sadly, just as their friendship becomes rich and meaningful, Mari is murdered, leaving Rose grief-stricken and confused.Debbie Brockett tells the story of Rose's father's deteriorating health, the discovery of her deceased mother's journal, and Rose and Satter solving the mystery of Mari's death tenderly and skillfully, with spiritual lessons embroidered into the fabric of the tale but not dominating it.It is a story well told, and well worth the reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Compelling Book
As a resident of Grand Junction, Colorado, I was captivated by the skillful way in which Ms. Brockett took me into my town's past, leading me along the street into areas that I never knew existed. Not only did the locale grab my attention, but also the characters quickly became three-dimensional, introducing me to a lifestyle that has long since been laid to rest.

Walking the path with protagonist Rose Padroni, I saw through her eyes, heard with her ears, and felt with her heart. Her longing for her widowed father's approval and her pain at not receiving it reached out and touched me, as did her grasping for a mother-figure in the form Marietta Monroe, only a few years her senior but world-wise well beyond her years. When Mari is murdered shortly after their friendship blossoms, Rose reaches beyond her own grief to assist Mari's brother in trying to find those responsible for snuffing out her friend's life.

The realistic story becomes even more powerful when the reader learns it was inspired by an actual murder that occurred in Grand Junction in 1937. Many months of research preceded the writing, and Ms. Brockett deftly wove the threads of that tragedy into the fabric of Stained Glass Rose. This historical novel rivets the reader's attention to its pages from beginning to end-no matter where that reader may happen to live.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great read
"I see a perfectly crafted masterpiece of beauty and message. The amazing thing is, if the artist had left out even one bit of glass, the picture would be incomplete. No matter how small or colorless, each piece is necessary and valuable."

This excerpt is the secondary, but important character, Father Nick talking to Rose...the main character of Stained Glass Rose. The above sentence describes the book itself tightly written without a piece of `necessary and valuable' information missing.

Debbie Brockett's research is impeccable. In Stained Glass Rose, she takes a real-life murder case and weaves a story of friendship around its unsolved elements. Thus not only does Stained Glass Rose hold elements of mystery, but is a book about how one important person can make a difference in someone's life.

The book, Stained Glass Rose is told through the eyes of an elderly woman. D.A. Brockett weaves her story so well she can slide her reader back and forth from flashback to present without a jolt. The book's richness is more enhanced by her choice of first person Point of View.

All characters carry a strong individual flavor in this book; a piece of Americana where `old country' meets new. It gives us a peek of how "The Melting Pot" grew in Grand Junction Colorado.

This is a very well written and enjoyable book with a few surprises. I look forward to more of D.A. Brockett's work.

2-0 out of 5 stars I have to agree!
Even though I'm selling my copy, I have to say that the book wasn't helpful to me. I do glass painting myself using stained glass patterns and this book was pretty useless. Also please note: the photothe back is NOT in the book, which was why I bought it new in the first place! Yes the patterns are lovely but again I agree, they would better used in another medium. (Watercolor maybe?)

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time
I was very disappointed with this book.I'm not sure the artist has ever even done stained glass now that I have seen the book. The entire book is in black and white, no shades of grey.I'm fine with choosing my own color palette, but these designs are so detailed that it is difficult to tell where one object stops and the next object begins.I tried to color the images with colored pencils and had extreme difficulty. There is not one picture of a pattern actually completed in stained glass. The way some of the patterns are created, I can't see how they could possibly be completed in stained glass. This book may be useful to other types of artists as some of the pictures are quite beautiful, but I don't feel it is worth it for stained glass artists. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best on the subject
If you are going to get only one reference book on historical stained glass, this is the one.Others have different pictures (e.g. The Rose Window), but for a great variety of excellent color pictures and superb text on the subject, this is the best!!Combine with Charles Sherrill's books on stained glas tours, and you are set to really enjoy and understand European historical stained glass (which is never explained when you see it in person).A definite "must have" for the serious appreciator.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid Reference Text on Stained Glass from a Renowned Expert
This text provides an outstanding and comprehensive historical review of stained glass from the Romanesque to the present era. Translated from the original French, the text is clear, well composed, and full of important information regarding all aspects of stained glass production, its use as an art form, and the changes undergone in the media over a thousand year period. The author, Catherine Brisac, is the curator of the Musée des Plans et Reliefs de Paris, and is a renowned authority on the subject.

The book contains numerous high-quality oversized (12" by 10") glossy reproductions of a wide variety of stained glass from Europe. This book can serve well as a coffee table volume for perusing, or as a library edition for reference. Of special note are the numerous close-up photos of the glass which depict specific scenes in the larger glass panels. But the ultimate value in the book lays in the author's comprehensive knowledge of the subject and her textual delivery of that content, which delineates the historical progression of the art form across both time and geographical regions. The text is detailed and specific, and is obviously the keynote of the book. The photographic representations are used to beautifully illustrate the text, not the other way around.

The book also contains some interesting and useful documentary material, including some selected textual copies from medieval craftsmen describing techniques in use at the time and depicting how craftsmen viewed their work in terms of its importance and utility. A listing of stained grass collections around the world (including location, museum name, and a brief description of the collections at each), makes a valuable addition for anyone wishing to enjoy these works in person. A chapter entitled "The Techniques of Stained Glass" leads the reader through a diagrammatically illustrated series of steps in the glass making process, and even shows how one may produce stained glass as a craft or hobby undertaking. Finally, a small but helpful glossary contains some key words the author uses in the text. A marvelous addition to any medievalist's library, or to anyone interested in this wondrous art form.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too stylized
This book certainly has a lot of patterns, but the flowers are very stylized--like Early Americana. Not what I was expecting.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good range of difficuly levels
I really like the patterns in this book. The designs range from simple patterns that could be used as suncatchers to more elaborate designs with over 100 cuts a lot of which are concave. Some patterns would look best with jewels and seemed to be designed for them.

Some of the patterns presented are just variations of one another. So, there aren't quite as many patterns as the product descrption might imply. However, there was a lot of variety packed into this book.

I feel like this book was a good value.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Range of Complexity in Design
As with all Mr. Sibbett's books, the images translate well to computer application when scanned. Most designs are two to a page with three on some pages. There is a nice range of complexity in the designs from simple tovery detailed. Some designs too are scaled to produce items where the imageneeds to be large, for instance when you would want the image of only oneor two flowers on the side of a box. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL
This book was above and beyond what I expected. I am very pleased with the quality of the designs, the paper. I couldn't be more pleased.

2-0 out of 5 stars lots of geometrical shapes
Many of the designs are just geometricals and those with characters are a little bit simple shaped. I defenetly prefer the book of sun signs.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great if you like vellum
The designs in this one are fabulous. It's just too bad I only got to color one of them before my cat knocked over my drink and spilled Pepsi all over it, ruining the entire book.Even vellum can't stand up to liquids...lol.

I will be ordering another, eventually.

If you love art deco, this is definitely for you.

I do stained glass designs not as window ornaments, but to hang on walls.I color them with markers, then affix a bright colored sheet of paper to one side, matte, and frame.

5-0 out of 5 stars adult coloring book
this book is fantastic! Once you start on a picture you cant put it down until its finished. you come up with what color goes where to create the best picture and hang in a sunny window to show it off. really does look like stained glass.

5-0 out of 5 stars Like a trip to Radio City Music Hall!
Combine your love for nostalgia, art, and relaxation so wonderful it'll lower your blood pressure with Art Deco Designs Stained Glass Coloring Book. This is another amazing winner from Dover Pictoral Archive Series, and if you are a fan of Art Deco, you MUST have this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good introduction for a beginner
This is the first book I bought when I started learning this amazing craft. It has beautiful illustrations and pictures (in color), which really show some of the techniques better than you can describe them.It is short and to-the-point, but I did eventually buy a more detailed book. But this one remains the one that I check back with to answer quick questions!Definitely worth the money!

This book reveals in detail more than one hundred English windows and panels, taking advantage of both new technology and Painton Cowen's unfailing eye. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great
Many colored pages of projects from advanced to beginners.Detailed instructions and photos of really neat projects from window to garden.

2-0 out of 5 stars little unique
I ordered this book based on the reviews and was disappointed. It is going into the recycle bin.It is not even worth the shelf space.I don't like the write bad reviews as I appreciated the hard work that went into this book. It's not a book for me, a mid level stained glass person that loves all types of glass. I thought the book contained the same type of projects as most others. It gave an overview of technique. This would not be enough for a beginner and an advanced user would not need it.I did not find any "tricks of the trade" (how to cut circles, how to wire reinforce a panel). For beginners things like "fold the copper" does little to help with details such as making sides even, what to do when it wont stick or wrinkles, and using the word "burnish" with no descriptions is confusing. On page 8 the book describes the different types of glass, with thumbnail pictures.More information is needed on best uses for each and how the different types impact the overall feel.

Projects:
Flower window, a daisy type flower in a arch shaped hanging panel
Mirror, perimeter framed with squares of stained glass randomly placed
Dragonfly garden stake, solder to chanel
Bird of paradise window panel
Ornaments, bell, tree, bird, simple snowflake(withzig zag wire laid across)
hanging picture frame with wire and beads dangling, simple decrotive solder
earring holder, 3 pieces of glass form a triangle with wire mesh in center
house number, circle with wire and bead around perimeter, purchase & glue numbers
rose garden stake, circle with rose design center solder to channel
light switch plate, 2 pieces with wire decoration
Purse, for display, has no sides, is just a triangle with a strap. iridized glass
sunflower in a circle.
night light.very simple rectangle design
night light midnight moon, open work, uses nugget and wavy solder
abstract panel, open areas, nuggets, raw edges
sunshine mirror, round mirror, triangles of glass and more wire accents
botanical window, simple design panel
candle holder, open areas in cube, wire accents, great inspiration--use up old
pieces of left over glass to make cubes for candles, I would add feet to lift
up so heat does not damage furniture.Nuggets would make great feet The
book gave no tips on how to make sure the sides square up, shame shame.

As I wrote this I noticed all the different projects that used wire.Maybe this is why others thought the book to be unique. The wire, often with beads, is soldered onto the pieces, left poking into the air, or decorates the edge.To me it is nothing new, just an extra decoration poking out.It is not a decorative solder technique. In the case of the light switch, the wires poking out would be a problem if you tried to turn on the switch.

Overall the projects are simple, few pieces, and designed for beginners. But key info is missing if you are just starting out.I know the glass store in my area offers classes. And they are always ready to help anyone, provide ideas, give hints, etc. After all, if you love glass they get a new customer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Creative Techniques For Stained Glass
Good book mainly for those that are looking for creative projects in 3D.
Very good pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliantly Creative, Clear and Concise
I havetried stained glass with several different instructors, but without a lot of success. The instructors had their own technique and were busy with a lot of students. This terrific book shows you the way and not only with words but with the pictures and all the steps needed.Obviously the authors are experienced teachers, creative and educated in their art.

I highly recommend this book to anyone from beginners to advanced. You will want to keep it for learning and reference. The book gives education on everything you would need to know about stained glass.Wish my previous instructors had read this book. Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and Fun!
If you want to venture outside the realm of traditional stained glass creations, this book is for you! There are several projects in this book that take minor steps away from the traditional techniques and far more that go beyond. It was fun from start to finish...a must have for any stained glass library! ...
