4-0 out of 5 stars Useful patterns
I have used several patterns from this book with great results.I did make small modifications, but I do that with most patterns! Many of these patterns are quite complex and some involve many, many pieces, but there are also a few that are great for beginners as well.If you are interested in celtic designs, this is the best glass pattern source I have found.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Ideas
This book has some great ideas, but I found the patterns themselvescrudely drawn. The images look like old hand drawn sketches that wereenlarged to fit the page. You could tell where additional lines were addedto allow for reasonable glass cutting, and areas of the patterns thatshould have been symmetrical were not.

I think a title of "CelticStained Glass IDEA Book" would be a more appropriate.I am notcompletely negative about this book.It has some interesting ideas, butjust keep in mind that the pattern will have to be redrafted before gettinga workable "pattern". ... Read more

The simple elegance and great eye appeal of these 67 designs make them perfect for many kinds of stained glass projects. A row of tulips, branches of plums and apples, California poppies, rose and dahlia blossoms, and a spectacular rhododendron bloom are just a few of the appealing subjects — each clearly outlined and easy to follow. Most are in squares and rectangles, many have borders or grids which add visual interest to the basic motif. All are copyright-free.

This book is just lovely, and the possabilities of adding its pages to other crafts is very enticing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautitful Book
This is a very beautifully designed book. The images are lovely and it's such a fun, soothing activity to color the pages in.So enjoyable!

2-0 out of 5 stars nice ideas and designs, but....
There are lovely stained glass ideas in this book, but... to use as a coloring exercise, you need to know that you really have to have felt tip pens to make the colours show up. There is a lot of black surrounding the designs and the "transparent" colouring areas are a light gray which cuts down on the brilliancy of any colouring.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great idea book
As a stained glass artist, this book got my creative juices flowing. The pictures are fairly complex, just like the stained glass of the 1920's era, and made me wish I had crayons or markers that could duplicate the textured, swirled, multicolored glass that was used during this time! It's a great starting point for people who'd like to take on more complex glass projects and who want to experiment with color combinations befhorehand. ... Read more

-The surest way to ruin a relationship is to marry the man you love.+ At least that+s what Vanella Morris believes. So when Alton, her longtime boyfriend and the love of her life, proposes, Vanella is faced with a dilemma: Unable to convince Alton to skip the vows and just live together, does she walk away from happiness because of her fears, or ignore her commitment concerns and risk the possibility of marital hell on earth? ... 3-0 out of 5 stars I thought it was ok..3.5 stars
I actually listened to this book on cd while on a 5 hour road trip.Because of Van's fear of committment, her words and actions frustrated me royally in the beginning.Had I been reading, I would have put it down and never picked it back up. As I continued to listen, I began to sympathize and empathize with Van to a certain point. I could not give sympathy however when she finally realized that Alton had moved on.Ray Charles could've seen that he was worth the risk. Apparently she hadn't been through enough bad relationships to recognize a good one.

This books allows for self reflection in regards to how people allow other people's business dictate their own actions. The reality is there is 3 sides to every story, His truth, Her truth and THE TRUTH.If you want to read a love story about self growth and love withstanding, this read may interest you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Promising author!
In most love stories, there is a lonely woman looking for love, for a prince in shining armor. If there is a twist, it is that she is a lonely older woman instead of a younger woman, or the woman isn't supernaturally beautiful, or she isn't a perfect size four. Usually, the young, thin woman is just looking for love in all the wrong places. And usually, she finds it, or it finds her, at the train station or walking a dog or while visiting a long lost relative. Every once in a while she finds contentment in being alone, or lost in the hope of all the future shall surely bring.

What I am saying is that these stories get very predictable. I am a romantic, so I always enjoy love stories, but sometimes I am just dying for a twist or turn that I did not expect.

I found what I was looking for in Counting Raindrops Through a Stained Glass Window , the first novel of self-published writer Cherlyn Michaels. The star of the story, Vanella Morris, is a little weight obsessed and oblivious to her obvious neuroses, but the love story is still compelling. She has the love of her life in Alton-- a great, handsome man with whom she has everything in common. And Alton wants to marry her. But Vanella can't say yes.

Vanella does not have a fear of commitment, as a reader might suspect. Instead, Vanella has a fear of marriage. Every marriage she has seen is either is an expressly sorry state, or has long since gone rotten. Vanella can only draw one conclusion: that damn certificate must have some crazy power over people -- the power to send an otherwise happy relationship to the dogs. Vanella wants lifelong commitment, but she wants to avoid that piece of paper that seems to be the root of all matrimonial problems.

The problem? Vanella can't get Alton, or anyone else that she knows, to buy into her theory, and her fear of marriage is about to leave her single again. Between relationship drama, friendship drama, family drama, and work drama, Vanella's plate is full. But it is only when she shovels through it all that she sees what marriage is really about, and why so many relationships go wrong.

I admit that I didn't necessarily like Vanella -- I enjoyed the story, but at first I turned every page just waiting for her to go get some kind of therapy. But more than her irrational relationship theories, I was intrigued by her family, work, and friendship issues -- all of which did affect the way she viewed marriage. I could not deny that Vanella was real, and so were her troubles.

Even better, Michaels sets the story in her own hometown, St. Louis, Missouri, and in Cleveland, Ohio. I appreciate the reality of setting a story in a place other than Los Angeles, New York, Atlanta or D.C. There are other cities with thriving black communities, and it's about time someone wrote about one.

And, as always, I love reading about a black woman who has her act together. Counting Raindrops Through a Stained Glass Window isn't about greed, pettiness, or keeping up with the Joneses. It's about one woman's personal struggle for peace and happiness. And we can all learn something from stories like that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Isnt Love Grand
Counting Raindrops Through a Stained Glass Window, by Cherlyn is an elegant story that centers around and magnifies love in its purest form.

Vanella is a power professional who enjoys her relationship with her fiancé, Alton. There are no doubts that she loves him; it's just that she can't allow herself to commit to saying yes to his marriage proposal.Vanella lives her life and subscribes by a philosophy, which she appropriately labels as the "O" Theory. This theory simply supports love and relationships without the legal documentation to validate the union. In essence, she is apprehensive that once she makes it legal, the relationships will self-destruct.

Alton, on the other hand, is a very hard working and successful man who is totally committed and in love with Vanella.Alton is aware of her theory, but he wants to prove that it can't possibly be right, because his love for her and hers for him will see them through any trials that they may have. After years of dating, Alton wants to take this relationship to the next level, and make Vanella not only his wife but also the mother of his future children.

Packed inside of this novel is not just testing the theory of love, but it also hits on childhood baggage, trust, sisterhood and friendship.

Ms. Michaels provides an insightful view on a relationship that is built on years of stored baggage. As an author and wonderful storyteller, she weaves a romantic tale that is sure to be adorned by many. Not only is this a fantastic love story, it also takes you on an emotional roller coaster along with the supporting cast.

Will Alton's love be enough to put this theory out of its misery?Sit back, grab a nice cup of hot tea, and revel in the words that Ms. Michaels spins into an amazing love story.

This book was great.I could not put it down.I was beginning to think the ending was not going to end the way I hoped. Kept me turning the pages even when i was sooooooo sleepy.... But, at the end I shouted Hooray!!!!!But it still got to me a little about Tucker and Robin. This book is a must read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A drama, cleverly disguised as a love story

4.5

Most women dream of having a handsome, successful good loving man ask them for their hand in marriage. Not Miss Vanella Morris. Though she doesn't physically run from the room screaming, she is mentally terrified of the effects she has seen marriage have on a good relationship. Vanella is bound and determined not to become another divorce statistic. Her six year relationship with Alton has been nothing short of fantastic, until Alton tries to ruin things by proposing marriage.

Vanella's dilemma sets in motion this wonderful drama, cleverly disguised as a love story. Cherlyn Michaels novel addresses the issues of a dysfunctional family and its dramatic effects on a woman's perception of marriage. Growing up watching her father verbally and mentally abuse her mother angered Vanella. What confused and irritated her most was the fact that her mother continued to stand by and meekly take whatever her husband dished out. Her father's actions along with Vanella's misguided girlfriends' advice are no help to her situation. Meanwhile Alton waits patiently in wings for Vanella to say yes to his proposal. When she suggests that they live together instead, Alton is devastated.

The most intriguing thing about this book is the way the author plays you as a reader. She sets her characters up to be a certain way and then more than halfway through the book, she flips the script on you. Nothing and almost no one in this book are as they seem to be. This book deals with some hard issues such as abuse, adultery and downright betrayal. It is also about letting go of the past, learning to forgive and giving yourself time to heal. Vanella eventually learns to overcome her fears by evaluating their root cause. The surprises in this book are well worth the read and worth the wait to get there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Short and good and inexpensive
I have read dozens of beginners books and this one still shines. It is spare in images and the words are used economically, but for covering the bases of beginning copper foil it is still the one I recommend. This book is the older equivalent of the "Quick Start Guide" we now all get with digital cameras, cell phones, etc. It may not be the ne plus ultra, but it gives you enough to get a running start. It costs about the same as a high end espresso and whipped cream Frankenstein, but the good effect outlasts the best caffeine buzz.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well written, informative
The stained glass information was helpful to me in my own stained glass business- well written and historically accurate, and the book captured the essence of who Frank Lloyd Wright was.The only criticism is that some of the photos weren't better- better lighting and professionally taken, which I realize could be hard to do in what are now historical buildings. The author is definitely qualified in all aspects (building these windows, and in historical study) to write this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Book - But NOT a pattern book
I actually DID read this lovely book accentuated by wonderful pictures....just be aware that it is NOT a book of stained glass patterns although the pictures will surely provide ample ideas for you to adapt. It'll be difficult NOT to get excited about doing some 'lightscreen' projects around your home or office where you DO want want to see outside, unobstructed light and scenery with either full panels or partial panels.Am I glad I bought this book?...You bet!

Product Description
A colorful international survey of stained glass in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

Some see stained glass as the art of painting in space; to others, it is a way of transforming light into a play of colors and images. Stained glass windows allow the shaping and blending of light within architectural spaces. Color, texture, transparency, design, and composition are all elements that can be varied and explored to create new light effects and bring space to its full potential.

The twentieth century, with its architectural revolution in methods and materials, opened up new possibilities for stained glass. During the last thirty years, a great many projects have been created all over the world, in both new buildings and historical churches and institutions. Studies of this phenomenon have been rare until now, and this book is a pioneer in the survey of this fascinating field. 246 color illustrations. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Nice, but impossible to cut!
Lots of very beautiful patterns (that's why I bought it in the first place) but I never made any patterns from it.Why not, you ask?Though I have done many projects requiring tons of grinding with the 1/4" bit, or over 1400 pieces, the fact is, it's just too discouraging to do.

Way too many pieces are uncuttable and require fine carving, and there is no color chart so you don't know whether pieces belong to flower, leaf or sky.You can't even guess!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great stained glass art book.
This is not a recommended purchase for someone wanting a hands-on introduction to the craft of stained glass. Although there are some chapters on techniques, it is very succinct and cursory, and definitely not a tutorial introduction. The value of this book is its comprehensive collection of works by internationally recognized stained glass artists. Examples of each artist are shown, and some commentary on technique is given. From this point of view, this book should be of interest to any beginner or advanced craftsperson looking for creative inspiration. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of The Best Self Teaching Books for Stained Glass!
This is an excellent teaching/design book for the neophyte and intermediate stained glass worker. An outstanding feature is the above average quantity of color pictures throughout that will make it a pleasure as well for anyone who simply wants to enjoy the beauty of stained glass without going through the large group class experience. The book opens with descriptions and examples of various types of glass. The tool chapter demonstrates the basic tools needed and variations of them. Workspace setup and safety cautions are discussed with an illustrated design for a bench with glass storage. Next are true step by step sequential visual aids with 'build-along' patterns. The beginner will not be afraid to learn to cut glass as Daley goes through the process with step by step photos, the proper methods of handling, scoring and breaking glass. This is the same successful exercise she has taught for over 20 years to her beginning students.Pattern design is discussed with advice on choosing the glass for your project. Detailed information on lead came and copper foil construction follows with techniques for reinforcing the work. Stressed throughout is hands on experience. Daley has included the patterns for 'build-along' sessions for the lead came Fleur d'Lys, copper foil (demonstrating double glazing) Butterfly panel, and a stained glass box. Instructions for a kitchen clock, decorative mosaic vase and small table lamp (with extensive info on lamp hardware) are also projects that can be made from this book. Then as a finale (or prelude to further techniques) is a chapter on building a stained glass three dimensional project: in this case a totem pole light. This unique chapter touches on kiln fired molds, shaping glass and firing glass enamels.
This book is highly recommended. With so many purportive teaching books on the market all trying to get a piece of the action, this one stands alone as a class act. Daley is a contritubing artist to my own book, "How To Work In Stained Glass, 3rd ed". ... Read more
