Wow...this book really helps you in life....
This book teaches you of ten people and there life experience in the world of being Adventist. Some of them had been born in a Christian home and some weren't. They all had to go through difficulties though. For example, Lee Ann. She grew up in a Christian home with her grandma, and mom. When she got to be eighteen years old she got married and thought that getting married was going to end up being fun. They went to Atlanta city and there they went to casinos and people thought she was twenty-one so they let her drink and play card games. She later started having marriage problems and so she gave up on her husband on inviting him to church because his mom had a very big influence on him that whatever the mom said he would do. She moved to an apartment and lived with a man named Fred, that wasn't her husband. Of course, the people at church eventually found out. The only time a pastor or an elder from the church came to her house was to tell her that her name was going to be removed from the name book of the church. She agreed because there was nothing she could do. The pastor told her mom and her mom said to him that they might as well take out all of the names out of the book because they had all committed sins also. So the Pastor decided not to take out her name because of that. She got into drinking and smoking and Fred didn't care at all. She got paranoid about her ex-husband. He washarassing her and following her everywhere. She felt like all the time that he was following her and so she would always turn around to see if he was behind her. The worst thing was that the police men wouldn't do anything about it. She got married to Fred and after that she started to think of their future kids. She said she wanted to take them to a Christian school, take them to church, and for them to have a knowledge of God. When she told Fred about that he didn't mind. He thought of it as a good idea. So when she had kids she took them to church and when she walked in there she felt like if the where all welcoming her with there arms fully open. That gave her the feeling of her wanting to come again and again.
So then her husband got baptized in a very cool way. He told Lee Ann that there children would be confused if they saw him going to a Catholic church and her in a different church. So he decided to take bible studies. Then he was convinced that he was wrong and that the SDA church was the best for him and his family. So he got baptized with her. They both knew that being at that church and holding to Gods hand would make a difference in their life.
There's more of these exciting stories that I recommend you.
It shows how not to fall in the same mistakes that those people fell in. So I grade this book as an excellent book. ... Read more

Entertaining, but Check Your Facts
I enjoyed reading this book.It is entertaining and I especially like many of the "lesser known" stories conveyed by the author.However, one major problem that plagued this book are inaccurate facts.Just one for example, states that "A resolution to declare war on Japan, Germany and Italy passed with just one "no" vote." (p. 145) happened on December 8, 1941.In reality, war was not declared on Germany and Italy until December 11, 1941. Unfortunately for the author, that is "just one" error that should have been caught.There are several others that have been covered in other reviews of this book so I will not bother discussing them.An unfortunate biproduct of these errors are that I had to question almost every fact for it's accuracy.Let it be a lesson for you would-be-writers out there: Check your facts!

What they didn't teach you about world war II
This book is very informative concerning statistics during the war years. I enjoyed it immensely.

What they didn't teach the writer about writing
While the "facts" in this book are interesting, it is such a difficult read.How any editor let this book by is beyond me.You can find out more about our society and the events of this period by visiting a retirement home as compared to reading this book.

Paraphrasing that switches from first to third person and overall rambling makes this a terrible read.This book reads like a high-school project.

Not serious, poorly edited, error-filled, but amusing
If you are deeply concerned with what various second or third rate actors and television personalitiesof 5 to 10 years ago did during the WWII, this is the book for you. Otherwise, this is a throw away.

The most startling new information provided in this book are that Prescott Bush was a Senator from Maine and that Winston Churchill was prime minister of the United Kingdom during the 1939 German invasion of Poland.Of course, Prescott Bush was a senator from Connecticut, and Churchill became prime minister in the Spring of 1940 after the Anglo-French invasion of Norway was defeated by the simultaneous German invasion.


France and England did not really come to the "rescue" of Norway from a German invasion. They had plannedtheir own invasion of Norway at the same time as the German invasion.They were delayed by several hours due to weather and claimed to be helping Norway against Germany. Paradoxically, Chamberlain fell because of the fiasco in Norway, and Churchill who was the architect of this disaster became prime minister! Of course, this is the kind of fact you are never told about the war, that someone like Wright could never tell you.I expected to find such things in this book.

Mike Wright's ignorance andthe absence of any apparent fact checking by the publisher indicate that both are worthless as sources of serious information.

With no special knowledge or interest in World War II, Wright compiles a bunch of humorous or trivia-related vignettes about the war as he appears to do about as many subjects as he can publish books.

However,I feel sorry for someone like the author who believes people need to know how Swooze Kurtz--whatever she does???--got her name. I feel sorrier for someone who is bamboozled into thinking this is a book with new information about the greatest tragedy in human history.A war in which scores of millions of people died and many countries laid waste deserves more than drivel like that!

With the opening of the archives of the old USSR and the GDR, all sorts of information that was not known before is available for a serious author who really wants to tell us things that we weren't told about WWII. I expected this kind of information when I purchased this book. Yet, Wright is oblivious to the fact the major segment of WWII in Europe was fought between the USSR and Germany and its allies.

His goal is to provide quick, entertaining, light reading on a subject that is neither quick, entertaining, nor light.

The copy editing and fact checking in this book is simply not professional.While a bibliography which is useful is provided, there is absolutely no regular sourcing in this book, which may, in fact, be a tribute to adequacy of his sources, compared to the inadequacy of his history.As somone who teaches college students to discern which books to use for research papers and which to avoid, I would advise people to avoid any book brought out by this publisher for serious research or reliable knowledge.

This book does have its moments. He gives an interesting blow by blow picture of the draft process when it was launched in 1941.He also provides interesting information about the deportation of Japanese Americans and Canadians, and about German prisoners of war in the US.

However, though he condemns Japanese brutality to Allied prisoners, Wright is completely silent the attrocities the US and UKperpetrated against Japanese soldiers who wished to surrender.Allied policy was usally not to take Japanese prisoners, but to massacre them.A grisly trade in Japanese sculls and gold teethsent back to the USA grew up during the War. This is the kind of fact about World War II that "They Didn't Teach You" that is light years away from anything Mike Wright knows.

For a better look check out "Why the Allies Won." For an even better set of information about the Pacific war that is NEVER TOLD consult War Without Mercy by John W. Dower which will tell you about Allied abuse of Japanese prisoners as well as Japanese crimes against other Asian peoples.

I found this book OK to read while I was sick in bed. I did not want anything demanding, although I must say that one driving factor in getting me to finish it was to see how many ignorances and errors the book contained. Like the one Harliquin romance I read under similar circumstances, I thought it was appropriate to throw the book away when I finished it.

It is unfortunate Amazon does not permit one to have 0 stars or negative quantites of stars.

Lively not dryly giving you the history of WW II
I am sure some history buffs out there after noisly clearing their throats of the dust they have inhaled after reading many a weighty volume of history will state that this book is light. Just shut them up in their moldy room and leave them alone.

This book is lively exploring the history of World War II in small painless (if not fun) chugs.

The book is broken down into themes and explores the war from the battle front to the homefront. What did celebrities do during the big one? How were women and child affected. How was it like to go to boot camp? These questions are answered along with many more in a quirky and fun style.

Verdict: A great book to get someone into history without scaring them off. A nice book to read on the train (you should never read while driving your car- you might miss a chapter).

Hardly anything changes from edition to edition - I'm so glad the professor for my course didn't care which edition we bought ... all that changed was the order the chapters appear in and the page numbers ...
One of the more unbiased text books I've found ...

Seller "just forgot" to ship product. She doesn't do this for a living.
I never got the product.I emailed the seller two times with no response whatsoever.Finally, on the third time I got a response a week later stating that she doesn't make a living selling books, rather she is a student who just sells her used books.She was sorry, she just forgot to ship the book.

Teaching
Great reference about the American education. Comprehensive, it discusses the historical background of the American schools, effective teaching, and reforms. If you are preparing to become a teacher, this is a good book for you. Lots of insights and humorous scenarios inside the classroom.

Okay for Forced Reading
I had to read this for a college class.It's rather painful, but by college class standards, it's actually not that bad.I wouldn't say the author's style is exactly riveting, but it's a doable read.Chapter lengths are reasonable.

I wouldn't exactly wait up at midnight for this, but if you have to read it, just remember, it could be worse... a lot worse.

Outstanding Book forTeachers and Parents
This is an outstanding book, filled with terrific teaching ideas and concepts. I especially enjoyed reading the background information that was included about the contributors.
Teachers and parents will all enjoy ths book, and learn a great deal from reading it.

Determining Why We Teach
As a former high school social studies teacher, and a current college professor who teaches "Methods" classes for future social studies teachers, I found this book helpful in a number of ways.First of all, Singer knows his subject, and writes in an interesting and engaging way.The plain fact is that "Methods" textbooks in social studies are either dry as toast or are segments of more general Methods books whose authors do not really know social studies.Second, the most important advice Singer provides is that teachers have to plan in advance why a certain lesson, or unit, or approach is worthwhile -- in short, that they have to be engaged in their subject matter.While many students today (certainly in my university) will not be engaged in the same way as Singer (who came to social studies teaching from a radical political perspective, expecting to change the world via the classroom), students do have to develop a perspective on why they are teaching, and Singer's open-ended activities and thought experiments are very useful here.Finally, Singer does have good nuts and bolts suggestions on how to put together lessons, units, and even curricula, though the last usually depends on district policy so his advice may not be able to be implemented by many teachers, let alone student teachers.I would be the first to agree that some of Singer's suggestions are impractical or dated, and that the resources section of any textbook get dated very quickly in the internet age, but I wish my student teachers would consult this book more frequently once they begin their assignments in the classroom.While Singer would probably deny it, my assessment is that the book is geared overly much to U.S. History, and does not treat in as much detail as would be warranted World History, U.S. Government, and other standard social studies topics.

Has this man been in a real classroom?
Save your money!!If this book is required for a college class do not waste the money on it.There is not a single useful piece of advice.The author apparantly has never been in a real classroom or spoken to a real high school student.

His advice is condescending and just plain wrong.The sample lesson plans are not practical for real life!The author gives instruction that are simply contradictory to the real world.

This is one of the worst books that I have ever read.If I could give it zero stars I would! ... Read more
