Product Description
A Muslim scholar with extensive experience in Africa, T. Abdou Maliqalim Simone was recruited by the Islamic fundamentalist Shari'a Movement in Sudan to act as consultant for its project to unite Muslims and non-Muslims in Khartoum's shanty towns.Based on his interviews with hundreds of individuals during this time, plus extensive historical and archival research, In Whose Image? is a penetrating examination of the use of Islam as a tool for political transformation.

Drawing a detailed portrait of political fundamentalism during the 1985-89 period of democratic rule in the Sudan, Simone shows how the Shari'a Movement attempted to shape a viable social order by linking religious integrity and economic development, where religious practice was to dominate all aspects of society and individuals' daily lives. However, because Sudanese society is remarkably diverse ethnically and religiously, this often led to conflict, fragmentation, and violence in the name of Islam.

Simone's own Islamic background leads him to deplore the violence and the devastating psychological, economic, and cultural consequences of one form of Islamic radicalism, while holding to hope that a viable form of this inherently political religion can in fact be applied. As a counterpoint, he ends with a discussion of South Africa's Call of Islam, which seeks political unity through a more tolerant interpretation of Islam.

As an introduction to religious discourse in Africa, this book will be widely read by students and scholars throughout African Studies, Religious Studies, Anthropology, and Political Science. ... Read more

Product Description
In the remote foothills of southern Sudan thousands of boys live together in a place called Natinga. They are displaced people. The bitter civil war raging in Sudan has claimed the lives of an estimated 1.5 million people and driven more than 4 million others from their homes. Among them are countless children, many of whom have no home left to return to when and if the conflict is resolved.

Natinga is the temporary refuge for about 2,000 boys, ranging in age from 8 to 18, from many different tribes. The camp is protected by the Sudanese People's Liberation Army, a group who is engaged in a fierce battle with the Islamic Arab regime that took control of the Sudanese government in 1983. The rebels claim to want to educate the boys for peace and self-government. School supplies are scarce, however, as are basic necessities such as food and medicine. In addition to the war, disease and famine are constant threats. It is unclear whether these boys will ever return to what remains of their family and home again. Meanwhile, their traditional customs and way of life are fast disappearing.

Judy Walgren traveled to Natinga and met the boys living there. Here she provides a vivid document of their lives, from the struggle to find sanitary drinking water to the hope of acquiring the knowledge and survival skills that will help them find a new life in their war-ravaged country. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible book!
Not only does author Judy Walgren capture the faces and stories of the young children known as "The Lost Boys of Natinga," but she captures your heart as well.
In a easy to understand format, she details the facts behind the long running civil war between the North and the South of Sudan, chronicling the devastating effects it has had on the people who live there: in particular the children. This is a must read for anyone with an interest in Southern Sudan!

5-0 out of 5 stars Really great book!
I am working with adults who were "lost boys" and there is much speculation about the quality of their past education in the refugee camps and if they will be able to go on to college. This portrait allows me to better understand their lives in the refugee camps and look at their experiences and build upon them.A lack of education should be remedied by continured education not by telling people they are "incapable."

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautifully heart-breaking book
I've got five lost Boys from Sudan in my Sunday School class and was trying to find more about them, their country and their situation. I found myself in tears as I read the book and looked at the wonderful photos. I highly recommend this to anyone wanting more information. It's easy to read for children but not so simplistic that adults can't benefit from it also.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful, vivid
As the foster mother of two "Lost Boys" who have immigrated as refugees to the U.S., I found this book invaluable for understanding the day-to-day conditions under which my boys grew up.We've read lots of scholarly books and newspaper articles, but seeing the photos of the boys at school (scratching out their numbers in the dirt using a twig), grinding maize with a giant mortar and pestle (a 2 hour-a-day chore, according to one of my boys), and wasting away from lack of medicine provided me with a much clearer view.

The writing is also terrific and moving, and photography vivid and beautiful.Recommended for anyone with an interest in Africa, refugees, and stories of human endurance and dignity.A good book for adults as well as younger people.

1-0 out of 5 stars The ramblings of an amateur with a camera.
There is often considerable confusion whenever White Star publishing of Italy produce yet another book about the sea which is aimed primarily at scuba divers. Firstly, each book gets treated to a particular brand of Italian English which is hard to understand and makes reading the item very difficult indeed. Secondly, they appear to use a small number of truly excellent underwater photographers who are then incapable of delivering the standard of product which the modern scuba diver "demands." Finally, the qualifications of those underwater photographers when it comes to describing that flora and fauna is, at the very least, suspect. For example, any author of a book on, say, Sharks who had a PhD in marine biology would mention that qualification somewhere within the book. Mr Mojetta appears to have no such qualifications. In short, factual errors do not seem to matter to these publishers.

Mojetta has previously produced books about the flora and fauna of the Mediterranean Sea. There are many errors in that book. He has also produced a book called "The Barrier Reefs" which later became "The Coral Reefs" - both being largely the same product. Now we have yet another tome which seeks to explain the flora and fauna of the Red Sea - which was also covered in those previous books. In some instances this book is called "Red Sea and Complete Coral Reef Guide" in another it is called "The Red Sea - Underwater Paradise" and in yet another it is simply called "Underwater Paradise" and yet it is all the same book.

My biggest problem with Angelo Mojetta, however, are his qualifications, ability and experience for writing a book of this type. In short, they do not appear to exist. There are many errors in his previous works and other instances where the same picture of a fish is described as being one species in one book and something very different in another.

There is far more to writing books about the flora and fauna of our seas than simply taking a photograph and looking that species up in a book written by somebody else! Sadly, Mojetta's errors will be accepted as being factually correct by some divers who will then put the wrong name into their logbook.

In summary, this is "not" a trustworthy guide, it is a book that serious marine biologists will laugh at. It is, however, packed with outstanding photography - photography which should not be allowed to fool the reader into believing the written content is anything more than the ramblings of an amateur with a camera.

Product Description
The vast area of swamp and wetlands of the Southern Sudan, the Sudd, absorbs and dissipates by evaporation about half the inflow from the upper catchment of the White Nile. Ways and means of reducing these losses by canalisation have been under engineering investigation since the beginning of the twentieth century, the objective being to provide additional water for irrigation and hydro-electric power in Egypt and the northern Sudan. Construction of the Jonglei Canal began in 1977; at the end of 1983 it was halted by civil war, 260 kilometre from its outfall and 100 kilometres short of completion. In the area through which it passes it will, if ever completed, have varied local effects; it will reduce the seasonally river-flooded grasslands, which are of crucial importance to the pastoral sector of the local economy and cut the line of seasonal migration of man, livestock and wildlife. Yet it will bring benefits and opportunities as well as adverse effects. Based on scientific studies of the area carried out in the early 1950s and again between 1978 and 1983, the aim of the book is to present a multi-disciplinary survey of the very complex interrelated hydrological, ecological, biological and human problems involved. ... Product Description
Cyril Crossland (1878-1943) was Director of the Sudan Pearl Fishery between 1905 and 1922. At this time, the British colonial government had taken charge of running the fishery, with local fishermen as employees. A marine biologist and zoologist, Crossland was praised in his obituary in the journal Nature as 'one of the last explorer-naturalists of the Darwin type'. This book is both an account of his life in the Sudan and a scientific survey of the coral reefs on the Red Sea coast. It offers a lively description of the region, its people and customs, and a clear, accessible explanation of the development of coral reefs. In Crossland's time this region had not been fully mapped by Western explorers and this study was an important contribution to knowledge. The book is illustrated with many of Crossland's own photographs of landscapes and people and his diagrams of the coral reefs. ... Read more

Product Description
How do communities grapple with the challenges of reconstruction after conflicts? In one of the first in-depth ethnographic accounts of refugee repatriation anywhere in the world, Laura C. Hammond follows the story of Ada Bai, a returnee settlement with a population of some 7,500 people. In the days when refugees first arrived, Ada Bai was an empty field along Ethiopia’s northwest border, but it is now a viable—arguably thriving—community.

For the former refugees who fled from northern Ethiopia to eastern Sudan to escape war and famine in 1984 and returned to their country of birth in 1993, "coming home" really meant creating a new home out of an empty space. Settling in a new area, establishing social and kin ties, and inventing social practices, returnees gradually invested their environment with meaning and began to consider their settlement home. Hammond outlines the roles that gender and generational differences played in this process and how the residents came to define the symbolic and geographical boundaries of Ada Bai.

Drawing on her fieldwork from 1993 to 1995 and regular shorter periods since, Hammond describes the process by which a place is made meaningful through everyday practice and social interaction. This Place Will Become Home provides insight into how people cope with extreme economic hardship, food insecurity, and limited access to international humanitarian or development assistance in their struggle to attain economic self-sufficiency. ... Product Description

"Brilliant and intimate. The book is an eloquent rendition of the expansive spatial abstractions and mimetic revolutionary re-imagination it proposes." -Social and Cultural GeographyGrowing Up Global examines the processes of development and global change through the perspective of children’s lives in two seemingly disparate places: New York City and a village in northern Sudan. At the book’s core is a longitudinal ethnographic study of children growing up in a Sudanese village that was included in a large state-sponsored agricultural program in the year they were born. It follows a small number of children intermittently from ten years of age to early adulthood, concentrating particularly on their work and play, which together trained the children for an agrarian life centered around the family, a life that was quickly becoming obsolete. Shifting her focus to largely working-class families in New York City in the 1980s and 1990s, Katz is able to expose unsuspected connections with the Sudanese experience in the effects on children of a constantly changing, capitalist environment—the decline of manufacturing jobs and the increase in knowledge-based jobs—in which young people with few skills and stunted educations face bleak employment prospects. In teasing out how “development” transforms the grounds on which these young people come of age, Cindi Katz provides a textured analysis of the importance of knowledge in the ability of people, families, and communities to reproduce themselves and their material social practices over time.
