5-0 out of 5 stars Prima's Swedish-English Dictionary (Swedish and English edition)
I loved this dictionary (I've got the third edition) : for a book of its size,it has a great deal of the words I need -and the phonetic symbols are clear and easy to get. Of course, for a deeper study of Swedish, one would need a bigger and more detailed one but any dictionary of this size can not be asked more than this, in my opinion.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Absolute Necessity
I find myself getting absorbed in this book every time I look up a word! There are many useful idiomatic phrases for the word, along with the various related prepositions, endings and assorted definitions. Just browsing through this dictionary is a substantial language lesson.I will get the English-Swedish volume also but am glad the two books are not in one volume, as that would be too much to handle.Readers should go through the notes at the beginning of the book, to get full advantage from how the entries are presented.I highly recommend.

3-0 out of 5 stars Swedish-English Dictionary
As a dictionary it is very comprehensive - my biggest problem with it there is no English-Swedish it is just a one way dictionary and therefore not as useful as it could have been

5-0 out of 5 stars Prisma's Swedish-English Dictionary-A Great Investment
The first time I saw this book was when I decided to buy it,being that there is a great lack of useful Swedish Dictionaries published in the English language. However, when I received this dictionary it well out-did itself. Not only does it have a section on Swedish pronunciation, noun endings, and other grammatical features at the beginning, it gives numerous phrases and other helpful words associated with most every word you look up. Beware, that if you think this book is Swedish-English, English-Swedish (as I mistakingly did), you're in for a surprise. However, if you do decide to buy the complement edition to this book-the English-Swedish version-you are once again in for a treat, as it presents the same quality as this book, only for English-Swedish translations.

This really was a great investment, and I urge anyone interested in the Swedish language to pick this (as well as the companion volume) up, along with either Routledge's Comprehensive Swedish Grammar (if you're really serious), Routledge's Essential Swedish Grammar (if you're just interested or need a small review)in addition to a good Swedish course (Colloquial Swedish-with the cassettes of course-is a good beginner's course).

5-0 out of 5 stars "Longing is betrayal of oneself..."
Can words of critical analysis or praise fully capture or convey the essence or magnificence of poetry? Especially of a collection of poetry that speaks so fluently and fluidly for itself?

This collection ofSwedish women poets is an excellent introduction to its subject matter.Discovering a collection of poetry from women exclusively is a rare andrather precious find, which makes this book a treat, even if its contentslacked originality or creativity.

However, Tala Till Mig does notdisappoint with its content. Powerful and moving poetry is packed into thepages of this (thankfully and wonderfully bilingual) edition.

FromAgneta Ara's self-admonishing poem "Longing is betrayal ofoneself" to Gurli Linden's poem of avenging betrayal and seizingemotional freedom ("I built small nests/under your heart"), thisis a fresh, innovative and intricate collection of voices. Well worth thereading. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Has some value - would buy again - but leaves much to be desired
This book has lots of little hints other good books are missing.I like some of the format, and would have given it at least 4 stars, if it were not for the fact that there are no pronunciation guides in the dictionary.Swedish pronunciation makes French pronunciation look like a day at the beach, but yet there is only one Swedish dictionary with easy-to-read phonetic pronunciation guide for each word, that I know of in English. It is the Swedish Berlitz pocket dictionary (not to be confused with the phrasebook & dictionary, which has excellent pronunciation for the phrases, but not in the dictionary portion of it) See my reviews for the Berlitz books.

If you are thinking of investing in the much bally-hooed Rosetta Stone.Save your money.

Rosetta Stone is a nice little "stone" in the building materials and tools of learning a language, but that's all it is, a rough stone at that. More like a glorified giant-sized Sesame Street language program for kids, but to say that is berating Sesame Street a bit, which does a much better job. You still very much need to use grammar books and dictionaries, lesson books, etc. if learning a language from "scratch" and while you are using Rosetta Stone. There are no language-specific built-in appendices, no dictionary, no language translation guides of any kind, no footnotes pointing out grammatical anomalies etc. (of which there are many in every language.)Nothing. Zilch.

There are just phrases in text accompanied by the audio (if you select audio accompaniment) in Swedish, to fit the pictures, and you have to guess, either, or, depending on your choice lesson. But none of these many preferences is more than just a quiz game. ROSETTA STONE HAS NO LEARNING TOOLS.

It seems the creators/programmers of Rosetta Stone made the same basic program template of photo pictures for all language suites they sell, and they just changed the voice and text for the different languages. What a money-maker! And what a rip-off!I would bet they spent more on marketing Rosetta Stone than creating it.

Check out my review on Rosetta Stone's Swedish package.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed with Hippocrene
First of all, I didn't buy this version of Hippocrene's Swedish-English dictionary, but the larger one, so I have never actually seen this book. But I was shocked to find out (once I began studying Swedish more intensively) that my version of Hippocrene does NOT tell you whether the nouns are "ett" or "en" words! My God, how could these boneheads have decided to create a dictionary about the Swedish language without this essential information? It makes the book nearly useless, and I have had to start over and buy a new one.I don't have any recco's for a dictionary yet, but I am going to try Prisma.Try to get a dictionary that tells you whether nouns are common or neuter gender, and also how the nouns look in the definite and indefinite plural. The latter is the hardest part of Swedish to learn, in my opinion.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good, but editing and printing not great.
In general, the translations in this little dictionary and phrasebook are correct. Unfortunately, however, there are several errors in editing. For example, on page 80 we read "Consumption of alcohol in public places is permitted in Sweden." Presumably this was supposed to say that it is NOT permitted in Sweden. In addition, the type doesn't always show the accent marks over the letters. For example, in the glossary on page 106, we find "svara" defined as meaning "to curse, to swear." In fact, however, "svara" (without two dots over the first a) means "to answer," and "svära" (with two dots over the first a) means "to curse, to swear." This is a significant difference! This failure to print the accent marks correctly is evident on many pages of the book (and it appears to be a printing error, not an error by the authors). ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Non Fiction
Berlitz Swedish-English Pocket Dictionary by the Berlitz Publishing Company is a handy little reference guide when you need to look up a word in Swedish and find its English equivalent, and it is not obvious at a glance on the internet.Occasionally useful for checking out a book title on Librarythign too, for combining.

Anyway, not too bad at all.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good But Not Enough Words
I bought this while living in Sweden for 6 weeks. I bought it because it was cheap. Actually it was the cheapest Swedish-English dictiionary in a Swedish book store. It was about 2/3 the cost of the next most expensive dictionary. It was about 70 Kronor or about $15 in Sweden. It is cheaper here on line.

My version was bought in Europe and it is a more recent printing. It has a different ISBN number but has a similar cover and came out in 2002, about 4 years after the 1998 version. The following ISBN numbers all seem to be for a very similar book: ISBN-10: 2831563852, ISBN-13: 978-2831563855, and ISBN 91-46-18276-4. My recent version is slightly more compact than the 1998 version. It is the last ISBN number and it is 333 pages, about 10% smaller than the 1998 version, but contains the same number of words as the other two versions: 12,000 words. All versions seem very similar: they have similar covers, similar words, all have phrases, and all have tips on grammar.

It was not purchased with the intent of learning the language. My goals were more modest, i.e.: I needed help reading some transport signs, signs in banks, safety labels, telephone instructions, and other written material such as labels on over the counter medications, etc.

For example, if you go to a store in Sweden you will find that the products are different from North America and almost all the labels are in Swedish only. One needs a dictionary or a guide. The dictionary has 12,000 words. That might seem like a lot but I could almost never find a word, or so it seemed. For example, when I bought detergent, I was able to find bleach added (bleka) but when I bought hand creams etc at the drug store, or apotek as it is called in Sweden, I could never match any of the words on any of the labels to words in the dictionary. So I could not determine the ingredients and the book was essentially useless for that.

It seemed that most of the time I hit a dead end. Also they have many words in the dictionary that are virtually identical in either language such as AIDS and similar international words that have been adopted into a number of languages, and I thought it was a waste of space to put in so many identical words.

This book is a two way book, i.e.: one can be English speaking or Swedish speaking. There is one half for each with comments on the languages in both langauges, but the book has limited word selection for both languages, and the book is not exactly symmetric going back and forth between languages.

I suggest alternative books with more words.

3-0 out of 5 stars Works, but shop around some more
I just spent a month in Sweden, and I brought along this dictionary.

Advantages:
* its size meant that I could carry it around in the back pocket of my jeans
* its English pronunciation transcriptions are easy to understand (note: it's based on Standard British pronunciation)
* it has a small section of traveler phrases, conversation tables, etc. which can be useful to carry around

Disadvantages:
* poor word selection
* could be much more helpful with verb conjugations
* no help with word usage or idioms

What the disadvantages mean is that this dictionary alone is not sufficient for doing Swedish language homework or for translating anything of substance, like newspaper articles. I ended up buying a large reference dictionary that I would keep at home; I would use this one only when shopping etc.

Admittedly, this is a pocket dictionary, but even so, its word selection could be much better. It's missing basic Swedish words like 'somna' (to fall asleep), 'motionera' (to exercise), and 'lexikon' (dictionary). It's missing basic English words like 'creative' and 'chapter.' On the other hand, it has entries for English words like 'carry-cot', 'thundery,' and 'esplanade', entries that I can't imagine being nearly as useful. It's also missing day-to-day Swedish expressions like 'varsågod' (here you are), 'sådär' (as such), and 'hej då' (goodbye).

This dictionary will work in a pinch, but I would shop around more first.

1-0 out of 5 stars fairly useless
The first problem is that the amount of material covered is extremely limited - the vocabulary you learn would probably fit on a single sheet of paper. What's worse though is that they don't bother including the "en" or "ett" articles with nouns, so you have no idea what gender a noun is, and whatever nouns you do learn will have to be learned a second time with their proper gender.Definitely not recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars EuroTalk Swedish
I foundthis CD to be very useful in reviewing Swedish, which I had studied years ago. I have sampled other products and found them tobe ponderous, making language learning more of a chore than it ought to be. The EuroTalk CD's (I have several) are the most fun to do. Will you become proficient in the language by using this CD?Hardly, but you will get a good grounding and it's just fun if you are like me and like to study foreign languages. I wish Amazon.com would make the more advanced levels available as well. I think this CD would be very useful as well for the traveler who just wants an intro to the language. Most Swedes speak English, but not all are comfortable with it.And everyone appreciates an effort to learn the language of the home country.

1-0 out of 5 stars not recommended
I read the online reviews of this product and thought it looked good or at least good enough. It isn't.

The image editing is incredibly jerky and the actors' smiles are downright creepy when seen time and time and time again!(Were the option available to exclude the actors from the screen while still hearing them speak, it would be a better product.)

Though some of the vocabulary presented may be useful, the content of the CD does not offer much in the way of sentence or phrase help.

3-0 out of 5 stars When you just need to hear it...
I was having a great deal of trouble learning Swedish from books because I just couldn't "hear" it inside my head.A friend of mine loaned me this CD and it helped a great deal to get past that challenge. It is a very simple program and there isn't much depth, but I did find it useful because (as Swedish is uncommon here in rural New York) I needed to hear phrases to orient myself. The vocabulary and phrases taught are primarily for tourists. I would rate it higher if the price were just a bit lower, more in line with it's true value. ... Read more

Excerpt: The Tales of Ensign Stål (Swedish original title: Fänrik Ståls sägner, Finnish: Vänrikki Stoolin tarinat, or year 2007 translation Vänrikki Stålin tarinat) is an epic poem written in Swedish by the Finland-Swedish author Johan Ludvig Runeberg, the national poet of Finland. The poem describes the events of the Finnish War (1808-1809) in which Sweden lost its eastern territories; these would become incorporated into the Russian Empire as the Grand Duchy of Finland. The first part of Ensign Stål was first published in the revolutionary year 1848, the second in 1860. It shaped Finnish identity and was later given out for free during the Winter War to raise patriotic spirit. The first chapter of the poem also became the national anthem of Finland. The name of the title character, "Stål", is Swedish for steel, a typical example of a so-called "soldier's name". These were names, often consisting of simple words for traits or traits related to the military or nature, given to Swedish soldiers by their commanders, and many of Runeberg's characters have them: Dufva, Svärd and Hurtig ('pigeon, 'sword' and 'hearty') are other examples. The first poem and eventual Finnish national anthem, Maamme. The poems of Ensign Stål feature several officers who fought in the Finnish War, including marshals Wilhelm Mauritz Klingspor and Johan August Sandels, generals Carl Nathanael af Klercker, Carl Johan Adlercreutz, and Georg Carl von Döbeln. Among the most famous characters is the simple but heroic rotesoldat Sven Dufva. The organisations Lotta Svärd and Lottorna were named after the character in the poem of the ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=2503620 ... Read more

Product Description
This volume explores the grammatical structure of sentences in Swedish, presenting an account of the order of the words and phrases within the clause. This analysis is presented from the perspective of Optimality Theory within the theoretical framework of Lexical-Functional Grammar. This framework provides syntactic analysis in terms of functions within the clause such as subject, object, and also topic and focus, as well as part-of-speech analysis in terms of noun phrase, verb phrase, and so on, and the hierarchical structure of those constituents.Sells argues for the superiority of a base-generated account of the phenomenon known as Object Shift, and shows how an account based on the notion of Alignment within a ranked constraint system provides a natural account of it. The nature of the Verb-Second sentence pattern and syntactic differences between Swedish and the other Mainland Scandinavian languages are also considered. ... Read more

Product Description
The articles published in this volume were presented at a joint Swedish-Polish conference. Even if Swedish - or in a wider perspective - Scandinavian literature at the turn of the twentieth century was one of the most important sources of inspiration for Polish modernism, modernism still constitutes an interesting but at the same time somewhat unclear and problematic phenomenon for Swedish and Polish researchers. Both in Swedish and Polish literature - but for completely different reasons - there is an ongoing discussion about not only the origin, features and different periods of modernism, but also its actual existence and effect on the cultures and literatures of both countries.

One of the goals of the conference therefore was to answer some of the important questions regarding the relation between, for example, modernism and avant-garde: modernism and modernity; and modernism and post-modernism etc. The contributions to the conference deal not just with modernism in the cultures of the two countries, but also, and above all, with the nature of modernism in the literatures of neighboring countries, that is, Swedish, Polish, Finland-Swedish and, in one contribution, Russian modernism, all seen from a Scandinavian and a Polish perspective. ...
