Giger's multi-faceted career - From surrealistic dream landscapes, to album cover designs, and sculpture

For the last three decades H.R. Giger has reigned as one of the leading exponents of fantastic art. Born in Chur, Switzerland, in 1940, he studied interior and industrial design for eight years at the School of Commercial Art in Zurich (1962-1970), but was soon gaining attention as an independent artist, with endeavors ranging from surrealistic dream landscapes created with a spray gun and stencils, to album cover designs for famous pop stars, and sculpture.

In addition, Giger's multi-faceted career includes designing two bars, located in Tokyo and Chur, as well as work on various film projects - his creation of the set design and title figure for Ridley Scott's film Alien won him not only international fame but also an Oscar for Best Achievement for Visual Effects (1980).

"The more famous I get, the more I am tolerated, albeit with some head-shaking." H.R. Giger ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars H.R. Giger
this is a good book for some one looking to save money on the introduction to the surrealist art of h.r. giger, it has many previously published works from different books like biomechanics and necronomicon but it is a quarter of the size of those books, there are two versions of this book as well a small copy and the larger copy you will find with red on the cover...not all in black. it is also a stripped down version of H.R Giger .com...if i was to recommend a book out of all of the ones available i would say to fifst time buyers... get h.r. gigers biomechanics or one of the necronomicon books(or all of those), if you wont spend that much money or cant i would just get h.r. [...], but if you want this get the red copy its bigger, still the same exact book, just this one is smaller and less money....

5-0 out of 5 stars Mini-Coffee Table Book is a Bargain !
An excellent choice for a newer Giger fan or somebody who can`t justify purchasing the more expensive "coffee table" volumes. This little book is full of high-quality pictures, sketch reproductions, vintage photos and more. The timeline in the back is a great touch too. These smaller books are priced very reasonably, which means you can enjoy showing Giger`s INCREDIBLE work to friends, family and co-workers with less worry than the more expensive books. Even though I have only read limited portions of the book--it is worth it! I recommend buying this little gem for your own library or as a gift.
Thanks for reading!

Product Description

In 2009, the Dolder Grand celebrates its first birthday following a four-year remodelling by Foster+Partners. Photographers from the Zurich studio nave, Nadja Athanasiou, Michael Bühler and Peter Lüem, have documented the entire project throughout every stage of the refurbishment, charting the scope of the hotel's metamorphosis. The resulting narrative in pictures and words is not simply a linear documentation, but a rich and complex tapestry in which text and image are interwoven with a lyricism that brings the architecture to life on the pages of the book. Journalist Judith Wyder complements the photographs with anecdotes and facts that give a fascinating and many-facetted insight. Dutch novelist Cees Nooteboom has contributed an essay in which he describes the hotel as a microcosm and a home away from home, musing on how guests tend to take possession of the hotels they stay in.

Product Description
Landscape and Structures presents civil engineering structures, which stand out by virtue of their special relationship with the Swiss landscape, such as bridges, footbridges, tunnels, retaining walls, passageways etc., i.e. structures serving traffic routes. Civil engineer Jurg Conzett and photographer Martin Linsi focus their interest on works of architectural merit, which take account not just of engineering and efficiency, but also of the responses they evoke in the individuals using or looking at them. The book is published in conjunction with the exhibition curated by Jurg Conzett at the Swiss pavilion within the 12th International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale. ... OBSERVATIONS ON THE CHARACTER AND CULTURE OF THE I EUROPEAN VINE, DURING A RESIDENeE OF FIVE YEARS IN TIIE VINE GROWING DISTRICTS OF FRANCE, ITALY AND SWITZERLAND, BY S. I. FISHER - , TO WHICH IS ADDED, THE MANIJAL OF THE SWISS VIGNERON, As adopted and recommended by the Agricultural Socie- ties of Geneva and Berne. THE ART OF WINE MAKING, BY MONS. BULOS, Member of the Institute of France. TRANSLATED FROM THE FRENCH - 1834. - PREFACE. I IN submitting to the.agricultura1 communi- ty the following pages, I am incited by a deep conviction of the importance of the subject. Hav- ing long entertained a predilection for the Vine, I have been naturally led to an investigation of the habits of the plant, and an observation of the dif- ferent methods of vine dressing in those coun- tries where fortune has thrown me. During a residence of five years in the vins districts of France, Switzerland, and Italy, I had the most favourable opportunities-particularly in Switzerland-to study the theory, and observe the practice of their cultivation and wine making to inquire of intelligent proprietors the results of their operations and investments to mix with the vine dressers in the several divisions of labour and to compare with the agriculture of our coun- try the expenses and returns of the land holder and farmer, under their peculiar circumstances and different cultivation. The result is, a deci- ded conviction of the profits of vine growing, and a settled belief, that by adopting the system of Swiss cultivation, we shall in .time succeed in the difficult task of acclimating to our country, the foreign vine. There is perhaps no vine country of Europe-certainly none which I have seen-where the cultivation of the Grapehasattain- ed so great a perfection, and where the results oi the vintage are so mediocre where the vineyard blooms in vernal luxuriancy, the summer cheers with flattering hopes, and a treacherous autumn so illy redeems the deceptive - promises of the seasons. With few exceptions, I consider the wines of . Switzerland to be the most inferior productions of the European Vine and it is due to the skill and perseverance-of the Swiss proprietor, and to the unwearied industry of the vigneron of the Cantons, that the sterile hills of rtheir romantic country have attained their present value, and a culture formerly unknown, arrived at such perfection as to support the dense population with which the country teems. Switzerland has but little commerce, and produces nothing to exchange for foreign luxuries. The government of the Cantons, aware of the deep stake at issue, and sensible of the importance of extending to this cultivation a fostering protection, has given to the members of it every possible facility at their command. Patriotic and public spirited individuals have associated in agricultural societies, itlviting to their membership such practical vine-dressers, as can promote the objects of the cultivation, and improve by their writings, their experience, and their counsel, the system of Swiss vine-dressing awarding to such as require it, pecuniary aid, and to others of more propitious circumstances, honorary testimonials, where skill and experiment have thrown new light on the subject, and improved the condition of the Swiss vine-dresser. The Canton of Geneva has done much for the cultivation, by encouraging such societies, and PREFACE. eliciting important information from practical vine growers. Among the best of these may be cited the little Manual of Mr. Brun Chappuis, adopted and recommended by the Agricultural Society of Geneva, and that of Mr. Reymondin. The first of these is a treasure to the vine grower... ... Read more

Excerpt: Grand Théâtre de Genève is an opera house in Geneva, Switzerland. As with many other opera houses, the Grand Théâtre de Genève is both a venue and an institution. The venue is a majestic building, towering over Place Neuve, officially opened in 1876, partly destroyed by fire in 1951 and reopened in 1962, after extensive refurbishments, which houses the largest stage in Switzerland. As an institution, it is the largest production and host theatre in French-speaking Switzerland, featuring opera and dance performances, recitals, concerts and, occasionally, theatre . During the 17th and early 18th centuries Geneva was heavily influenced by Calvinist orthodoxy and it was not until the middle 1760s that the city agreed to the building of the Théâtre de Rosimond, Geneva's first opera house. Under the influence of Voltaire opera began to flourish at La Grange aux Etrangers and its successor theatre, the Théâtre de Neuve, both of which were located outside the walls of the city. After a long period of uninterrupted activity, the Théâtre de Neuve was pulled down in 1880 to be replaced by a new theatre, better suited to the quality and space needed by Geneva's growing population. As early as 1862, the Municipal Council had decided that the theatre was too small and plain, in view of Geneva's increasing importance and prestige. In 1870, an invitation for proposals was launched, and the project was handed to architects Emile Reverdin and Gaspard André. Funds for the new theatre project were provided by Duke Charles of Brunswick's legacy to the city in 1873, out of which 1.2 million francs were earmarked t...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=3860547 ... Ever since the AIDS epidemic struck, the health authority's task of educating the public has gained dramatically in significance. In many countries, the poster as medium of information was unknown before the advent of AIDS; a visual vocabulary first had to be developed for an issue saddled with ingrained taboos. A survey of current posters on AIDS prevention, displayed in Asia, the Pacific, and Africa, demonstrates that the urgent and imperative success of the posters depends on their being rooted in local traditions--thus returning posters to their original function as a means of mass communication. The sixth book in a series based on the poster collection of the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich.
