   Extractions: What's New The State Board of Education is the governing and policy making body for the Tennessee system of public elementary and secondary education. Its work touches all facets of education from accountability and evaluation to curriculum and teacher education. The General Assembly created the current State Board of Education in 1984 when it adopted the Public Education Governance Reform Act. The legislation restructured the board, gave it increased independence, and expanded its duties. Although the Board works very closely with the State Department of Education, it is a separate full functioning state agency. The State Board of Education has a professional staff of research associates to provide ongoing policy research and analysis of public education issues including instruction, student assessment, and funding. The Board also works closely with the Tennessee General Assembly to secure legislative support for education. Through its annual report on student, teacher, and school performance, the Board provides the legislature and the general public with information about the status of education in Tennessee. The Board has developed specific strategies to accomplish its mission in the Master Plan for Tennessee Schools 2003 (in.pdf format)

The Cherokee silversmith,Sequoyah,was the only known man in the history of the world to single-handedly develop an alphabet. His syllabus for the Cherokee Nation resulted in the first written language for a Native American people. The Sequoyah Birthplace Museum in Vonore tells his story and is dedicated to the history and culture of Native Americans. The first constitution ever written by white men in America was drafted in 1772 by the Watauga Association at Sycamore Shoals near Elizabethton, Tennessee. Formation of the Watauga Association also marked the first attempt by Americans at complete self-government. The 1772 constitution was based on the Iroquois Federation's laws. Tennessee has produced three U.S. presidents: Andrew Jackson, 1829-37; James K. Polk, 1845-49; and Andrew Johnson, 1865-69. Other famous Tennesseans include frontiersman Davy Crockett, Admiral David Farragut, cavalry officer Nathan Bedford Forrest, U.S. Register of the Treasury James Carroll Napier (appointed 1911 by President William Howard Taft), World War I hero Alvin York, and Cordell Hull (secretary of state under Franklin D. Staff photo by Donna Smith State attorney general, local legislator speak on issue of teachers' pay Oak Ridger staff The issue of equalizing teachers' pay in Tennessee was on the minds and lips Tuesday of both the state attorney general and a local legislator, state Sen. Randy McNally, R-Oak Ridge. With the state under pressure to equalize teacher pay, The Associated Press in Nashville reported that Tennessee Attorney General Paul Summers said the General Assembly should develop an annual salary review for teachers to determine any disparities. The Tennessee Supreme Court ruled in October that the state's system doesn't pay teachers equally in urban and rural school districts, denying students equal educational opportunities. Oak Ridge city schools have been cited in lawsuits filed by the rural school systems as an example of an "affluent" school system in which teachers earn far more than their rural counterparts. The court left it up to the General Assembly to devise a plan to equalize pay.

    Extractions: The College of Dentistry offers a postdoctoral program in general dentistry designed to meet the needs of practitioners who wish to advance their education in the practice of general dentistry. This is a one year program of study in techniques and clinical procedures aimed at providing advanced education for general dentists whose primary interest is the delivery of a wider range of complex dental services to the general public in rural and urban under-served areas. A space has been designated for at least one minority resident in each AEGD class. The College of Dentistry has a well established relationship with Veterans Administration Medical Center, and St. Joseph Hospital where AEGD residents receive instruction and supervision in a hospital setting while treating medically compromised and pediatric patients. Residents obtain training in indigent care training in indigent care through a continued rotation in a modern dental facility at the Mid-South Family Health Center. Other rotations include a teaching rotation of pre-doctoral students in Operative Dentistry and a rotation at Arlington Developmental Center where residents receive experience in treating special care patients. Advanced General Dentistry residents will have many opportunities to interact with residents and graduate students of the College of Dentistry and to be a part of the General Practice Residency based at the VA Hospital. This interdisciplinary exchange will help achieve many of the essential programs and educational objectives of the AEGD program. The AEGD program will emphasize chairside treatment within the University of Tennessee, Memphis, College of Dentistry and provide opportunities for enhancement of practice administration skills.
