A new focus initiated in 1997-98 focuses on identifying fifth through eighth grade students who are trained as "partners" for first and second-grade students. Extensive training focuses on relationship-building with reading as the primary partner activity. The University of Tennessee evaluated the 1997-98 program with a 96% success rate. Expansion of the program includes the addition of summer sites and over 160 new schools added for 1998-99. This program successfully complies with the recommendation to provide well-trained and supervised "volunteers" to expand childrens opportunities for reading and for motivational support.
