The Dominica Amateur Athletic Association was founded by Oswald B. Savarin and Felix A. Wilson in December 1982 responding to the call for its formation by Stephen Agar and Julius Lewis, two athletes of the Striders Athletics Club. Between late November 1985 and early 1986 a few sporting Associations were invited to the Sixth Form College (as it was called then) to a meeting to explore the formation of an Olympic Committee. Rupert Lake from Antigua gave some guidelines based on his experience and participation as an officer of the Antigua Olympic Committee. A Steering Committee to include Rolston St. Hilaire (secretary) and Felix Wilson (vice president) from the (DAAA), Joyce Rabess (Netball), Clifford Severin (DLTA) (treasurer) and Francis Dupigny (president). Extractions: Home The Olympic Movement Olympic Issues In the Ancient Olympic Games, women were forbidden to take part. In fact, they were forbidden to even enter the competition areas as spectators. If they were caught, the punishment was death. Therefore, they created their own Games dedicated to the goddess Hera. Hera was the sister-wife of Zeus. The Olympic Games were dedicated to Zeus. When the Olympic Games were revived in 1896 even the founder himself, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, did not agree with women's participation in the Games. This issue was the topic of much debate between the initial members of the IOC. However, women did not take part in the Games until 1900 in Paris. It was here that Britain's Charlotte Cooper became the first female gold medallist in the tennis singles competition. Only one other sport saw women's participation in 1900, golf. In London at the 1908 Games there were 36 women competitors in the figure skating and tennis events. After these Games and a recommendation from the British Olympic Association that women swimmers, divers and gymnasts be allowed to compete in future Games, the Swedish Organising Committee included two swimming events and one diving contest for women at the 1912 Stockholm Games. Finally, in 1924 the IOC decided to allow a larger participation of women in the Games. However, there was little evidence of this even by the 1936 Games in Berlin where there were only four sports available to women.

Extractions: MILESTONES IN WOMEN'S SPORT Introduction Consider that no women took part in the first modern Games in 1896. Today the balance remains weighted in favour of men, but it is tilting. At the XXVIth Games in Atlanta, for example, 97 of the 271 events were open to women, with 11 contested by both genders; 3,626 of the 10,629 athletes were women. Of the 307 Canadian athletes who competed in Atlanta, 154 were women and 153 were men, making this the first Canadian Olympic team ever to consist of more women than men , an impressive shift in a short time. The movement towards this statistical improvement has been slow and has by no means been a certainty. Many barriers to full participation remain on the world stage, although Canada can point to a measure of progress and some inspiring milestones as the 20th century comes to a close. Extractions: Olympic Factsheets Women and the Olympics Women were traditionally prohibited from participating in the Ancient Olympic Games. They could not even enter the playing areas or the stadium as spectators. However, women held their own games at Olympia. Dedicated to the goddess Hera, the sister-wife of Zeus, these games grew out of traditional Greek fertility rites. According to some estimates these games even predated the exclusively male Olympic Games. At the turn of the century when the Modern Games came into being, much debate took place on the principles of women's participation. The founder of the Games Pierre de Coubertin, declared himself against women's participation expressing the opinion that if they could not play in every sport on equal terms with men they should not be allowed to take part at all. This view was opposed by several International Olympic Committee (IOC) members who supported the stand that women had the right to participate in the Games, competing in sports to suit their capabilities. The first breakthrough in women's participation took place at the second Olympics, the 1900 Paris Games. It was here that Charlotte Cooper became the first Olympic champion by winning the Gold Medal in the tennis championship. The only other sport allowed at these games for women was golf. Although swimming was added to the program in 1912, this symbolic gesture to women's sport continued until 1924 when the IOC decided to open its doors for a larger participation of women in the Games. The road between the proposal and the initiation was not an easy one as even in the Berlin Games in 1936 there were only four sports available to women, they were - swimming, fencing, athletics and gymnastics.
