Ability Of Texas K-12 Teachers To Use The WWW It is important to measure if texas teachers are and to assess the number of schoolsnow using Creators of WWW sites intended for k12 education need feedback http://twri.tamu.edu/twripubs/NewWaves/v9n4/abstract-5.html
Extractions: Researcher: Ric Jensen Problem: The World Wide Web (WWW) is an exciting technology that may dramatically change the way water resources education is taught in public schools. The WWW has been in existence only a short time. It is important to measure if Texas teachers are interested in using the WWW for classroom instruction, and to assess the number of schools now using the WWW for classroom teaching. Creators of WWW sites intended for K-12 education need feedback on the perceived usefulness of their sites from classroom teachers. Exposing K-12 teachers to innovative WWW sites may hasten the use of the Internet because teachers will be more likely to "surf the web" after they have seen creative and useful home pages. Objectives: 1) To assess the ability and willingness of Texas K-12 teachers to use water resources information from the WWW for classroom instruction, 2) to evaluate the usefulness of the TWRI WWW site (Texas WaterNet), and 3) to determine if use of Texas WaterNet has increased since TWRI visited schools and demonstrated use of the WWW to teachers. Methodology: Results: NOTE: This project funded by the EPA Environmental Education Grant program. An interim progress report can be obtained by contacting TWRI at (409) 845-1851 or

Even before Texas became a Republic, the frontier homesteaders cited in their Declaration of Independence the necessity for good schools, pointing out that "unless a people are educated and enlightened, it is idle to expect the continuance of civil liberty or the capacity for self-government." Mirabeau B. Lamar, the second president of the Republic of Texas, took this to heart and advocated that the Texas Legislature set aside public land for schools and a university. The words of the early settlers have endured. They are heard more loudly than ever today, as the citizenry of the Lone Star State look toward a drastically changing knowledge-based economy and global order in the twenty-first century. As UT President Larry Faulkner puts it, "The effectiveness of Texas as a society in the years to come is going to be very dependent on the educational attainments of its citizens." It's a realization that dawned on him after his arrival in Austin in 1998, and he identified six goals for his administration. Included on that list, in keeping with the university's core purpose "to transform lives for the benefit of society," is outreach to Texas public schools to help improve academic achievement and graduation rates.

The UT TeleLearning Center (UTTLC) at the University of Texas at Austin delivers six high school classes by audioconferencing . The classes include Health Science Technology Education, TeleLanguage (Spanish and German), TeleRap (a roundtable discussion for teenagers), and a special migrant student program called Algebra Across the Wire. All courses are approved by the Texas Education Agency, count toward graduation, and fulfill Texas essential elements. Algebra Across the Wire is funded by a Texas Education Agency Migrant Student Program contract. Migrant students usually withdraw from schools, attend classes in various states, and then return to their original school. Unfortunately, this often results in partial credits that do not count toward graduation. Therefore, Algebra Across the Wire offers an alternative credit option to secondary migrant students as they travel or attend summer school. For more information about this program, contact: Darcy Walsh Hardy, Ph.D., Director, UT TeleLearning Center, The University of Texas at Austin, EIMC, P.O. Box 7700, Austin, 78713. Extractions: For parents, particularly homeschoolers, distance education provides the opportunity to supplement a child's learning experience with a subject which might be out of the normal realm of expertise. For instance, if your daughter wants to take trigonometry but math was never your strong point, she could enroll in a distance learning math class. You could go beyond course supplements and use a distance program as your child's complete educational framework. Furthermore, since distance classes can either be high-tech independent studies taken whenever is convenient or a group class with a fixed schedule, you can choose which fits with your circumstances and your child's learning style. Accreditation is a different animal on the K-12 level than on the higher education one. Because of the varied state regulations concerning homeschooling (or any form of non-traditional learning) accreditation isn't critical as with colleges and universities. Furthermore, most of the regionals aren't particularly equipped to handle the uniquenesses of distance primary and secondary schools. To address this issue, the regional accrediting agencies have created a new accrediting agency called The Commission on International and Trans-regional Accreditation (CITA). (You can find a list of CITA and regionally accredited K-12 schools by searching the
