Extractions: I grew up in a little country church in Mississippi where all of the services were intergenerational. Occasionally one could hear a toddler's bottle klunk-klunking down the slanted floor as it rolled toward the front of the church with the baby crawling after it! We were one of the few "inter species" churches as well! One family's dog tagged along as they walked to church and then waited for them in the church's foyer. Every time a certain soprano sang a solo, that dog howled along from the back of the church. I enjoyed singing hymns loudly from memory until the time I was able to read the words from the hymnal. We often had covered dish dinners complete with homemade ice cream. I have many fond memories of that church. The best memory is it was there, at the age of 5, I asked Jesus into my heart... not in children's church (we didn't have one), but because the Lord spoke to my five-year-old heart through the sermon on a Sunday night. Growing up in an intergenerational church did another thing for me, it taught me about reverence. Unfortunately, I learned this lesson the hard way. One Sunday morning I had difficulty sitting still, being quiet and listening to the sermon. (It was one of the few times that I didn't sit with my mother.) My daddy, who was the preacher, warned my sister and me once from the pulpit. He stopped preaching and said, "Juniata and Becky you need to be quiet and stop talking." Believe it or not, that embarrassment didn't quiet us. A few minutes later he called us to the front and had each of us sit on one of the big chairs on either side of the pulpit. I still recall the humiliation I felt as I tried to curl into a small ball in that big chair. However, to this day, I have no trouble sitting quietly as I listen to a teacher's lecture or a preacher's sermon!

Thanksgiving Unit hasnt been seen before, American Indians using thanksgiving to teach their rich traditions and culture to public http://www.teelfamily.com/education/thanksunit.html
Extractions: A Time to Give Thanks: A Thanksgiving Unit Study By Charity cccandc@alaska.net Please contact Charity Lovelace at cccandc@alaska.net The sedate Thanksgiving holiday is often overshadowed by its flashier sibling, Christmas. In the flurry of activity preceding the Yuletide season, gift shopping, baking, decorating, correspondence, Thanksgiving is reduced to an excuse to have a square meal and a brief respite from the holiday hustle. As a result, many children no longer understand its' original importance. This is reflected in statistics that indicate a majority of children cannot detail the historical antecedents of Thanksgiving. This need not be true of your children. The following unit study will not only teach your children the origin and significance of Thanksgiving, but will enhance the quality of your family celebration. Use materials from the Bibliography to cover the topics in the following course of study. Literature and activity suggestions are included at the appropriate sequence in the outline. Instructions for the more involved activities follow the outline. Adapt this unit study as needed to fit the academic levels of your students and the desired length of your study. I. Cherokees Teach Children Indian Version Of Thanksgiving the Indians, the Mayflower, and the First thanksgiving. Whether you teach kindergarten or college, you'll find valuable http://www.cherokee.org/NewsArchives/Archives2001/11-01-13.htm
Extractions: Cherokee Nation November 21, 2001 Cherokees Teach Children Indian Version of Thanksgiving TAHLEQUAH The Thanksgiving story children are taught in schools usually involves pilgrims, Indians and a whole lot of food. This year, the Cherokee Nation is helping teach children across northeastern Oklahoma what Thanksgiving means to Cherokees. The Cherokee Nation has distributed a Cherokee Thanksgiving curriculum to more than 100 elementary schools in northeastern Oklahoma. The curriculum includes a video and a workbook for children to study how Indians traditionally give thanks. It is important for Indian and non-Indian children alike to understand a little bit about Cherokee culture, said Chad Smith, Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation. At a time when the dominant culture is taking about giving thanks, this is a perfect opportunity to educate kids about how Cherokees have given thanks for hundreds of years. In the Cherokee Thanksgiving video, two Indian boys come home from school after learning about Thanksgiving. The boys mother and grandfather teach them about traditional ways, explaining things in simple terms that kids can relate to.

Extractions: How do we teach the concept of thanksgiving to our children? There are several things we can do to insure our children understand the importance of giving thanks to God. The first and most important element in teaching our children any new concept is that we model it before them. Children are master emulators and will do as we do. Our prayer and worship life must reflect a thankful heart toward our gracious Lord. Teach Scripture to your children. The following is a list of several verses you can teach even to your youngest child. 1 Chronicles 16:8-9 - [8] "Give thanks to the LORD, call on his name; make known among the nations what he has done. [9] Sing to him, sing praise to him; tell of all his wonderful acts." Psalm 7:17 - " I will give thanks to the LORD because of his righteousness and will sing praise to the name of the LORD Most High." Psalm 28: 7 - "... I will give thanks to him in song." Psalm 42:4 - "These things I remember as I pour out my soul: how I used to go with the multitude, leading the procession to the house of God, with shouts of joy and thanksgiving among the festive throng." Psalm 69: 30 - "I will praise God's name in song and glorify him with thanksgiving."
Extractions: by Julie Hilton Danan Thanksgiving brings to mind pleasant images of roasting turkey, pumpkin pie and family gatherings. Perfectly compatible with Jewish observance, the holiday is a traditional favorite of Jewish families. It always falls on a Thursday, never on Shabbat. The classic main dish is a turkey, available in kosher form. And gratitude for one's blessings is a religious impulse that all Americans can share. Moreover, popular historical interpretation holds that the pilgrims modeled Thanksgiving after the biblical harvest festival of Sukkot. Whether or not this is accurate a historian friend of mind considers it an American midrash or creative interpretation it creates a comfortable association between Thanksgiving and our Jewish heritage. In that vein, here are a few ideas to make Thanksgiving even more special for your family: *Do mitzvot, or good deeds. The classic Jewish way of enjoying our blessings is to share them with others. You could give tzedakah by donating money for charity or food to organizations that fight hunger. You could take a more hands-on approach and volunteer at a community Thanksgiving dinner for the needy or deliver meals to shut-ins. *Say blessings.
