Extractions: Integrate With Integrity: Music Across the Curriculum ... continued from Integrated Curriculum in the Making Thematic units are widely used in many ways, some more meaningful than others. To be effective, a series of decisions need to be made, some by the whole planning team, and others by each individual teacher. Research indicates that thematic units are more effective with children who are past the primary elementary years, even though primary teachers use this approach more than those working with older students. A thematic unit is time consuming in construction, and will require research into community resources and support. Choosing a theme must involve all teachers who will be engaged in delivering instruction. For music educators, the danger in having others determine themes is ending up with themes that are particularly unsuitable to teaching music. Creative teachers can always find a link, but some are far fetched. The theme is more powerful for students when they are also involved in decision making. Additionally, community members, parents, and administrators might be involved in the initial brainstorming and decision making. The big questions to keep asking are "Is this important for students to know Why?" The more this question is asked, and the more agreement is reached, the more powerful the entire unit will be.

We adapted the activity to make it a visual memory game. Our plush toy heart was our "Knave" who would steal a heart when the children were not looking. The children would then have to guess which heat was missing. Shape Face Game A large face was drawn with strips of velcro on his eyes, nose and mouth. Extractions: an interdisciplinary planning model Back to Rhythms and Ratios On the first day, we come prepared with an opening activity which we and the students can use together to assess our knowledge of rhythms, ratios and patterns. We follow the activity either that day or the next with a K-W-L debriefing period through which students can identify what they already know, what they want to know, and what they need and want to learn in this topic area. Students choose groups to research these skills and knowledge areas in order to teach the rest of the class as much as they can by the end of the week. For the next three weeks, students will work on self-generated projects in the thematic area inspired by the introductory week. Requirements for the projects: (a) the student MUST be interested in the project; (b) the project must be perceived to enhance mathematical understanding; (c) the project must be thought to be do-able in the time available.
