This program will train students in all aspects of construction and basic construction business management skills to provide a foundation for success as a carpenter or construction business owner. The FCPC will provide a college accredited building trades program to tribal members and, in the fall, local high school students that allows for continuing education in construction and related fields such as plumbing, electrical and HVAC. Target Audience: I utilize this project in biology classes after the students have completed a unit of study on ecosystems. This project is designed to apply all of the knowledge and skills that the students have mastered. This project would also be very well suited for environmental studies. Background Information This is the final project after an extensive study of ecosystems. I spend nearly nine weeks on ecosystems. I cover plants and animals, climatology, types of ecosystems, components of ecosystems, cycles in ecosystems, and changes in ecosystems. Only after the students have completed these tasks are they able to carry out this project. The students will be assigned an area of land. This land must be closely examined and studied to assess its suitability for construction purposes. I have the luxury of team teaching this activity with our building trades instructor. We combine our classes for the duration of the project. I teach the biological aspects of the project while he focuses on the construction and business side of the project. We select an actual future construction site. The stages of the project are listed below.

There are so many facets to understanding fractional measurements that it is impossible to guess what each person is having trouble with (is it fractions themselves? Or could it be the problem that most things are not measurable in simple fractions? Or could it be technique in actually carrying out the measurement? etc) However, there are many concrete objects (wood planks, screw size, nail length, etc.) which demand measurements accurate to the 16th inch. Perhaps if you make them try to build something which demands such accuracy, they will be forced to understand the importance of measuring to the 16th inch. Extractions: Special ON-LINE Edition "School Vouchers" The Case Against School Vouchers By Yves Barbero The latest "reform" by conservatives proposes a system of school vouchers, which they claim would solve most of the "problems" that trouble public schools. Public schools, they claim, are not educating our children, and are a cauldron of violence and immorality. There are indeed problems with public schools. However, study after study has shown that the American public school system is among the finest in the industrial world. Violence is extremely rare despite the occasional and very visible school shooting (private schools have been shot-up as well). It is a very big system, and is statistically, according to the FBI, one of the safest places a child can be. As to immorality, many social conservatives think that the development of intellectual skills and independent thinking among the young, much needed for survival in our modern world, rather than the straightforward implantation of a strict obedience to civil or religious authority, is immoral. School vouchers have a certain appeal, which has little to do with improving a child's education. A voucher system is a means to give public money to religious organizations. It is also a means to undermine a teacher's right to organize into a bargaining unit.

Many of the people with whom I spoke, or overheard speaking about the election, seemed to emit a sort of lethargic aura. A lack of energy or desire to focus on getting out the vote, or for that matter voting at all, seemed prevalent amongst my many encounters with folks. There were, however, enough candidates and supporters around to demonstrate their desire or passion for a particular issue or candidate. For example, one candidate who approached me used foul language in a manner that exhibited that person's true hostile and vindictive nature. Their comments seemed to suggest to me that since our support went to the opponent, I (the Council) had somehow assaulted them, and therefore retribution against me (Council) was warranted. Another candidate said that the mafia is alive and well in the Building Trades and that we are as "polite as a bull in a China shop." Huh? My point is not to whine or complain about how people treated me, or anyone else for that matter, during the election process, but to merely point out that regardless of how one feels about the local, state or national political environment, you must play a role in it or be prepared to endure the consequences of those who are involved, regardless of how ridiculous we might feel about them.

Extractions: United Brotherhood of Carpenters Union By Jamie McCallum M ike Griffin has been a carpenter in Decatur Illinois for five years, but recently he found himself working with the pipe systems that power huge turbines. The United Brotherhood of Carpenters (UBC) signed a deal with Westinghouse guaranteeing that carpenters can do pipefitters work if they agree to work for 10 percent less than the normal pay rate. The UBC is teaching apprentices and members that you have to compete against your brother, Griffin said. Well, not me. Members protested, threatening to take action with the AFL-CIO and the contract was renegotiated for more money. Still, Griffin and other rank and file members within the carpenters union think this is the shape of things to come. UBC management recently decided to withdraw its founding membership from the AFL-CIO, claiming the money it could be spending to organize new workers is being wasted by Washington bureaucrats. However, many members contend management would like the freedom to raid and sign more wall to wall contracts, which could send the wages of over 500,000 carpenters and about 3 million members in the building trades plummeting. Raiding is the practice of taking workers from one affiliated union to another, which is illegal under article 20 of the AFL-CIO Constitution. At a time when such a small percentage of the workforce is unionized, this clause is designed to encourage unions to organize the unorganized, not to bicker over a group of already-organized workers. A wall to wall agreement, sometimes referred to as a raid among the 15 building trades unions, is a contractor-friendly deal where one union does all the work typically performed by many crafts cheaper by undercutting the pay scale of other unions. With more carpenters on the job site, union management rakes in more dues money. However, using economic pressure to gain access to another trades work is illegal according to the AFL-CIO constitution, and violates building trades agreements that protect craft jurisdictions.

There are several small jobs presently going on in the province. We are anxiously awaiting announcements on a couple of major projects for the Guysborough County and Strait of Canso area. Also, it is interesting to hear that a settlement has been reached on Sydney Steel and Duferco. We are presently receiving numerous applications to the Millwright Local for membership which I feel is the result of all of the rumoured projects that are about to be announced involving offshore activities. The layoff of many mechanical personnel from Devco and Sydney Steel may also be contributing factors. The executive of the Local are presently looking at ways in which we can accommodate these tradespersons. Hopefully when the next newsletter is mailed out I will have all kinds of good news for our members.
