Extractions: T he North Coast region, which includes RNSP and the adjacent offshore area, is the most seismically active region in the United States. As a result of frequent earthquakes, rapid uplift rates have led to landslides, actively braiding and shifting rivers, and rapid coastal erosion. The reason for all this activity is the geologic setting of the North Coast region. Three tectonic plates (thin pieces of the Earth's crust which float above the mantle) known as the North American, the Pacific, and the Gorda contact each other at the Mendocino triple junction. This junction lies offshore near Cape Mendocino, which is about 100 miles (160 km) southwest of RNSP. Each of these plates slide against each other as they slowly move in opposing directions. Movement may be as much as two or three inches (5-6 cm) a year. Many times, this movement comes in the form of earthquakes, when built-up energy is released along fault lines that border the plates. Although the majority of these earthquakes are too small to be noticed, larger quakes are not uncommon. In the 1990s, at least nine magnitude 6.0-plus earthquakes jolted the North Coast. This amount of large quakes was higher than in any other decade within the last century. Most of these quakes occurred offshore, resulting in one death and major financial losses. Because the Gorda plate is subducting beneath the North American plate, there is the possibility of a "great earthquake" occurring in the future.

Extractions: There are a lot of theories about why the K-T (Cretaceous-Tertiary) extinction occurred, but a widely accepted theory (proposed in 1980 by physicist Luis Alvarez and his son Walter Alvarez , a geologist), is that an asteroid 4-9 miles (6-15 km) in diameter hit the Earth about 65 million years ago. The impact would have penetrated the Earth's crust, scattering dust and debris into the atmosphere, and causing huge fires, increasing already active volcanic eruptions , triggering tsunamis , and severe storms with high winds and causing highly acidic rain . The impact could have caused chemical changes in the Earth's atmosphere , increasing concentrations of sulfuric acid, nitric acid, and fluoride compounds. The heat from the impact's blast wave would have incinerated (burned up) all the life forms in its path.

Extractions: THE ATJ DOLLAR COLLECTION The seismological and other collections of Dr ATJ Dollar, held in the National Seismological Archive (NSA), have been examined and catalogued as part of an NSA initiative on the study of the history of seismology. The Adobe Acrobat PDF version of the report on this project can be downloaded from the foot of this page, or from the NSA reports page A.T.John Dollar (1908-1981) graduated in geology from King's College, London in 1931, and moved to Emmanuel College, Cambridge, where, supervised by CE Tilley, he gained his PhD on the petrology and structure of Lundy. In 1935 he became a Research Fellow at Emmanuel, and after a brief period at St Andrews University moved to Glasgow University in 1939. War service interrupted his tenure there, then, in 1950 Dollar became head of the Geology Department at Birkbeck College, and remained there until his retirement. During his academic career, Dollar developed interests in many subjects. His collected papers reflect these interests, and contain material on volcanology (including photos and articles on Surtsey, Jan Mayen, Iceland, Hawaii and various Pacific Islands), tsunamis, geology (especially of the southwest peninsula and Lundy), landslips, seismology and seismotectonics. He was largely responsible for the installation of a Jaggar Recorder at Comrie, Perthshire in 1938, and was particularly interested in the Great Glen and its supposed seismicity. Dollar wanted instrumentation on both sides of the fault, and was keen to site a seismograph at Fort Augustus Abbey. He also invented a clinometer, and various accessories for petrological microscopes.

GEOLOGY Evidence for a deep asthenosphere beneath North America from western United States SKS splits. Derek L. Schutt and Eugene D. Humphreys, pages 291-294. A traditional view of Earth has a weak layer - the asthenosphere lying immediately beneath plates, with plate motion accommodated by deformation within this layer. Such deformation would create fabric in asthenospheric rocks that could be detected with S waves; S waves split into 2 waves with first-arriving S waves vibrating in the direction of asthenosphere shear. S waves recorded in the western United States are inconsistent with this expectation, implying that the weak layer accommodating plate motion occurs at greater depths, where the minerals do not create rock fabric when deformed. This suggests that North America plate motion occurs largely by deformation below 200 km, which is below the traditional depth of the asthenosphere.
